UFC Fight Night 220 results: Joe Solecki puts Carl Deaton to sleep with tight rear-naked choke

Aggressive rear-naked choke attempts from Joe Solecki resulted in his opponent taking a nap at UFC Fight Night 220.

It appeared UFC lightweight [autotag]Joe Solecki[/autotag] wanted nothing more than a rear-naked choke finish at UFC Fight Night 220.

Thanks to his aggressive approach and consistent attack, Solecki (13-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was able to get what he was looking for, spoiling the debut of Carl Deaton on the prelims at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas with a technical submission finish at 4:55 of Round 2.

A vast majority of the opening round was spent with Solecki on the back of Deaton (17-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in a standing position against the cage. Solecki searched for the rear-naked choke repeatedly while alternating body triangles. Deaton remained calm, and kept his neck protected long enough to see the second round.

Throughout the second round, Solecki continued his hunt for a submission finish on the back of Deaton. With the clock winding down, a deep rear-naked choke was locked in. Deaton attempted to ride it out until the horn, but the choke put him to sleep with just five seconds remaining in the round.

The win for Solecki, 29, marked his fifth under the UFC banner, and his second straight. In his previous outing last June, he won a majority decision over Alex da Silva, bouncing back from his lone loss with the promotion.

Another fight has been added to UFC Fight Night 220 in Las Vegas.

[autotag]Carl Deaton III[/autotag] is the opponent [autotag]Joe Solecki[/autotag] has been looking for.

For weeks the UFC has been seeking an opponent for Solecki (12-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and it’s found one in the shape of newcomer Deaton III (17-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC). The fight has not yet been signed but both parties have verbally agreed to fight Feb. 25 at UFC Fight Night 220. The card takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Deaton III first announced the bout on Facebook.

Deaton, 33, enters the UFC after back-to-back wins on the Michigan regional scene. He’s competed as a professional MMA fighter for over a decade.

Solecki, 29, was scheduled to fight Benoit Saint Denis at UFC Fight Night 219. However, when Saint Denis withdrew, the UFC pushed Solecki back one week. Solecki enters the bout coming off a win over Alex da Silva in June.

Video: Joe Solecki taps out ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at FURY Pro Grappling 3

Donald Cerrone’s tough times continued against Joe Solecki in their submission-only bout at FURY Pro Grappling 3.

[autotag]Donald Cerrone[/autotag]’s tough times in combat sports competition continued Thursday when he was submitted by [autotag]Joe Solecki[/autotag] in their submission-only bout at FURY Pro Grappling 3.

Solecki, a UFC lightweight, weighed in at 169 pounds for the contest at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. “Cowboy,” who has often competed at welterweight in recent years, had a sizable weight advantage at 186 pounds.

It didn’t matter, though.

Solecki and Cerrone tied up early in the match, and Cerrone gave up his back from a standing position which led to both men rolling to the mat. Solecki then established top control, with Cerrone spinning around on bottom.

He spun one too many times, though, and gave up his back. They hand-fought for several seconds, but then Solecki got his forearm under Cerrone’s neck and forced the tap due to rear-naked choke at the 3:17 mark.

Solecki was elated after his win.

“The second Fury Grappling was nice enough to offer the match, it was yes, yes, yes,” Solecki said in his post-match interview with CM Punk. “He has the most wins in UFC history. He’s a legend. I appreciate the opportunity.”

Cerrone, for his part, is currently on a five-fight winless skid in his UFC career. The 38-year-old UFC legend, who holds the record for most octagon victories, hasn’t fought since a May defeat to Alex Morono.
