Jets WR Robby Anderson joins exclusive undrafted free agent club

Robby Anderson became the fifth NFL player to reach 3,000 receiving yards in his first four seasons after entering the league as a UDFA.

Robby Anderson’s season began rather quietly, but the fourth-year receiver recently joined an exclusive club of undrafted players.

Anderson became the fifth NFL player since 1970 to reach 3,000 receiving yards in his first four seasons after entering the league as an undrafted free agent. The list includes former Jets WR Wayne Chrebet, an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra.

Here’s the full list:

3,000 Receiving Yards Club

Player Team 1st 4 Yrs Recs Yds Avg TDs
1. Victor Cruz NYG 2010-13 241 3626 15.0 23
2. Wayne Chrebet NYJ 1995-98 283 3517 12.4 18
3. Antonio Gates SD 2003-06 265 3378 12.7 34
4. Drew Pearson DAL 1973-76 188 3103 16.5 18
5. Robby Anderson NYJ 2016-19 202 3009 14.9 19
Through the first four games this season, Anderson had just 11 receptions for 131 yards. When Sam Darnold returned from his bout with mono, Anderson immediately jumped back onto the scene. In Week 6 against Dallas, he caught five passes for 125 yards, including a 92-yard score.

With his name circling trade rumors and the Jets offense reeling, Anderson’s production again hit a standstill. However, over the past four games, he has been red hot. In his past four contests, Anderson has caught 22 of 34 targets for 370 yards and two scores.

His Thursday night performance put him over the 3,000-yard mark. Anderson caught four passes for 66 yards in the Jets’ 42-21 loss to the Ravens on Thursday Night Football.

With two games left to play against two of the best defensive backfields in the NFL, it’s unlikely that Anderson is going to set any career highs. Anderson is 271 yards shy of 1,000 for the season.

Still, he continues to put himself in a position to get paid this offseason when he hits free agency. It remains to be seen if the Jets will be the ones to pay him, but Anderson is due for a sizeable contract nonetheless.

It’s true, Jets QB David Fales always has ‘that weird look on his face’

The Jets Wire takes a look at all those weird faces Jets backup QB David Fales makes.

Adam Gase and Sam Darnold said they were in agreement during their sideline spat in the Jets’ 42-21 loss to the Ravens on Thursday night.

“We were both in the same mind frame,” Gase said Friday after a video appeared to the show the coach and quarterback in a heated discussion. “Somebody didn’t execute their job and basically I was bitching about that. And he was doing the same thing.”

The interaction between the coach and the player took on a life of its own on Twitter, especially because of Darnold’s body language and the look on back-up quarterback David Fales’ face.

Fales looked dumb-founded while listening in on Gase and Darnold’s conversation in the fourth quarter. He was clearly taken aback by whatever was said — or so we thought.

“David kind of always has that weird look on his face,” Darnold said of the video. “But we were not in disagreement at all.”

Because that’s quite a look Fales made, we at Jets Wire decided to investigate Darnold’s claim. It turns out that that is indeed a look Fales makes often.

From his college years at San Jose State to his days with Gase in Chicago, Miami and now New York, here are few examples of #FalesFace:

Lamar Jackson’s jersey swap with Jets a product of NFL’s current climate

Jets Wire breaks down why Lamar Jackson’s jersey swap with the Jets isn’t too big of a deal considering the current climate of the year.

In only 21 career starts, Lamar Jackson has managed to take the NFL by storm in a manner few before him have achieved.

Jackson’s dual-threat skill set has made him must-watch TV. His ability to thrash defenses with his superior arm talent and electric, elusive running skills have landed him at the forefront of the MVP race and in the spotlight on a weekly basis.

Jackson’s latest dynamic performance came against the Jets on Thursday night. He broke Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record for a quarterback while tossing five touchdown passes and leading the Ravens to a 42-21 win.

After getting trounced by Jackson, a handful of Jets players, including Le’Veon Bell and Robby Anderson, met with Jackson at midfield to exchange jerseys. The optics of the gathering weren’t too great for New York, as not only did Jackson just burn the team for four quarters, but he also had multiple jerseys to give out as if it was an autograph session for fans. Why would any Jet have interest in being buddy-buddy with a player who just embarrassed them in a primetime setting?

At the same time, it’s worth wondering whether the jersey swap is as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be. Jersey swapping is now a customary practice across all sports. Why are people taking issue specifically with this swap as opposed to others?

Whether you agree or disagree with the jersey swap practice, Jackson and Gang Green’s postgame session at midfield is a product of the kind of league the NFL is today.

In the league’s early days, players on opposing teams legitimately hated each other. It wasn’t a hate that lasted for four quarters and disappeared once the clock hit zero. It was a hate that lingered for years and, in many cases, into retirement.

The same cannot be said for today’s NFL. The NFL has essentially become a fraternity. Almost everyone is friendly with each other. While players still go to war for four quarters and friendships go out the window during the game, there’s seldom any lingering beef off the field. Once the game ends, the friendships return and any ill-will experienced over the course of a game dissipates.

If you’re an old school fan, odds are you couldn’t stand watching Jackson and the Jets swap jerseys. If you’re of the younger generation, it might’ve rubbed you as a little bit weird, but nothing crazy or out of the ordinary in sports today.

This is what the NFL has become. Thursday night’s jersey swap session wasn’t the first and it certainly will not be the last for Jackson or the Jets. The practice isn’t going anywhere, so there’s not much of a choice to accept it for what it is.

Jets Rookie Power Rankings: An uneventful night for New York’s rookie class

Jets Wire’s latest edition of rookie power rankings comes on the heels of Gang Green’s 42-21 loss to the Ravens on Thursday night.

As expected, the Ravens took it to the Jets on Thursday night football, dominating from start to finish en route to a 42-21 blowout victory.

The end result of New York’s Week 15 showdown with Baltimore should come as no surprise. The Jets are severely banged up on both sides of the ball and didn’t stand much of a chance against a healthy Ravens team who has dominated for most of 2019.

Unfortunately for Gang Green’s rookies, the injury bug has bitten half of the group. Kyron Brown is done for the season with a quad injury, while Chuma Edoga and Quinnen Williams were both sidelined against the Ravens. That makes for a rather uneventful latest edition of Jets Wire’s rookie power rankings series, but we’re going to do some evaluating nonetheless.

Here’s where New York’s rookie class stands after Week 15.

Last Week: Not Ranked

Ironically, Edoga is back in the rankings due to an injury.

With Kyron Brown on injured reserve, Edoga slides into the back end of the rankings despite sitting out against the Ravens. The hope is that he can return against the Steelers in Week 16, but the Jets aren’t going to rush him back into action.

4 interesting stats from the Jets’ Week 15 loss to Ravens

In Thursday’s loss to the Ravens, the Jets proved while they will have a top-10 draft selection, while Baltimore won the AFC North title.

Unsurprisingly, the Jets were handed their ninth loss of the season by a team much better than them.

The Ravens, entering the game as two-touchdown favorites, wound up winning by three. Baltimore beat the Jets’ No. 2 rushing defense like a drum. New York had its opportunities in the game, but never stood a chance. Adam Gase’s offense could never get going, and it looked like boys against men on the field on the defensive side of the ball.

Let’s take a look at some interesting stats from Gang Green’s latest embarrassing loss.

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen were the four quarterbacks selected before Lamar Jackson in the 2018 NFL draft.

Those four quarterbacks have a combined 38-52 record after the Ravens beat the Jets 42-21 on Thursday Night Football. With Thursday’s win, Jackson is now 18-3 as a starter.

Jamison Crowder, Marcus Maye among Jets’ Studs & Duds in Thursday night loss to Ravens

The unstoppable force that is the Baltimore Ravens steamrolled the New York Jets in a 42-21 primetime win on Thursday night.

The Ravens came into Thursday night’s matchup as two-touchdown favorites and there is no question why. Baltimore clinched its second consecutive AFC North title with Thursday’s 42-21 win over New York.

Baltimore has the most dominant offense in the league, while its defense isn’t afraid to punch you in the mouth. The Ravens offense operated at a video game pace, even with Lamar Jackson hobbled by a quad injury and made a mockery of the Jets No. 2 ranked run defense, running 34 times for 218 yards and a score.

Here are the best and worst players from the Jets’ latest loss.

Stud: WR Jamison Crowder

After dropping a wide-open touchdown pass, Jamison Crowder made a tougher catch to connect with Sam Darnold for his third touchdown reception of the season.

With Demaryius Thomas sidelined and Ryan Griffin placed on injured reserve, Crowder immediately filled the role of Darnold’s go-to receiver as he has numerous times this season.

Crowder caught six passes for 90 yards and two scores in losing fashion.

Jets vs. Ravens: 4 takeaways from New York’s loss in Baltimore

Jets Wire breaks down New York’s ninth loss of the season with four takeaways from Thursday night’s action.

Fresh off a buzzer-beating win over the Dolphins in Week 14, New York traveled to Baltimore to take on the Ravens Thursday night. Things did not go Gang Green’s way, as Baltimore manhandled the Jets to the tune of a 42-21 blowout victory.

Considering the disparity between the two teams’ talent and health at this point in the season, the result comes as no shock. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing from Week 15 worth evaluating, though. With that being said, let’s take a look back at New York’s ninth loss of the season with four takeaways.

The Jets never had a chance

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Nothing is ever a given in the NFL, but the way things played out in Baltimore on Thursday night is pretty much what everyone expected to see heading into the game.

Let’s face it. Given the current state of the team, the Jets didn’t have a chance against arguably the best team in the AFC. With eight starters sidelined due to injury, it would’ve been unrealistic to expect New York to come out and stop a Ravens offense that has dominated all season and a Baltimore defense that has had its way with opponents since Week 1.

Sometimes there’s simply nothing a team can do to emerge victoriously. That’s the position the Jets found themselves in against the Ravens.

Jets vs. Ravens inactives: New York missing numerous starters against Baltimore

Jets vs. Ravens inactives for Thursday night football in Week 15.

If you thought the Jets were missing a lot of impact players against the Miami Dolphins in Week 14, think again.

New York will be without eight starters against the Ravens on Thursday night, as Jamal Adams, Quinnen Williams, Chuma Edoga, Brian Poole, Demaryius Thomas, Arthur Maulet, Kyron Brown and Ryan Griffin are all out against Baltimore due to injuries. Brown (quad) was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Monday after making his first career start against Miami, while Griffin (ankle) became the latest Jet to hit IR on Thursday. In a corresponding move to fill Griffin’s roster spot, the Jets activated offensive lineman Brent Qvale off injured reserve.

Le’Veon Bell returns to the field against the Ravens after a bout with the flu that kept him out of action against the Dolphins, but Bilal Powell is out with an ankle injury and the flu. That leaves Bell and Ty Montgomery to shoulder the load for New York out of the backfield.

The Jets will also have Henry Anderson, Kelvin Beachum, Matthias Farley, Steve McLendon, Nathan Shepherd and Montgomery suited up in Week 15 despite all six players being listed as questionable leading up to the game. Whether or not any of the six can make an impact remains to be seen, but they are all required to dress New York is required to have a minimum of 46 players suited up.

As for the Ravens, they’ll be without starting offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley, who sits due to a concussion. Tight end Mark Andrews and safety Andrew Levine will all play for Baltimore despite being listed as questionable entering Thursday.

Jets vs. Ravens: Gang Green’s injuries, Lamar Jackson’s ascension among pregame storylines

Jets Wire breaks down Gang Green’s Week 15 matchup with the Ravens by taking a look at four pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

The Jets have won four their last five games, but they haven’t played anyone as good as the 11-2 Ravens. That will change Thursday night in Baltimore.

With a win, the Ravens would clinch the AFC North and hold firm position of the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoff race. The Jets are banged up and will most likely be shorthanded. However, their run defense may present a problem for Lamar Jackson and company, although Jackson is nursing an injury himself.

What should Jets fans be aware of before Gang Green takes the field this weekend? Let’s take a look at some pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

Lamar Jackson vs. Jets Run Defense

(Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports)

Lamar Jackon has set the NFL ablaze with his creative play in 2019.

A star in the making, Jackson is only 23 yards short of setting the single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback. Michael Vick set the record at 1,039 yards back in 2006. Baltimore is averaging 200.9 yards per game on the ground.

The Jets, however, boast the league’s No. 2 rushing defense led by Steve McLendon, Foley Fatukasi, Kyle Phillips, Nathan Shepherd and Quinnen Williams. The Jets allow 75.6 yards rushing per outing. New York dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in total rushing defense after giving up 122 yards to Miami last Sunday, but the Jets are allowing a league-low 3.03 yards per carry.

With the Jets defense and Jackson banged up, it will be interesting to see who has the edge on the ground.

Jets injury report: Ryan Griffin, Brian Poole among 4 ruled out vs. Ravens

The Jets have officially ruled out four players for Thursday’s game, while four others are listed as doubtful.

The Jets will go into their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Baltimore Ravens with few healthy bodies.

New York has ruled out TE Ryan Griffin (ankle), CB Brian Poole (concussion), OT Chuma Edoga (knee) and RB Bilal Powell (ankle/illness).

In addition, S Jamal Adams (ankle), DL Quinenn Williams (neck), CB Arthur Maulet (calf) and WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) are all listed as doubtful and unlikely to play. DL Henry Anderson (shoulder), OT Kelvin Beachum (ankles), S Matthias Farley (ankle), DL Steve McLendon (knee/hip), RB Ty Montgomery (foot/hip) and DL Nathan Shepherd (ankle) are all questionable but will need to suit up because the Jets already likely have eight players who will not be able to play.

The Jets need to dress 46 of 53 players for Thursday’s contest. They can make seven players inactive, but eight will be out injured. It is likely that New York will have to elevate a player from its practice squad before Thursday night.

The Jets already placed rookie UDFA CB Kyron Brown (quad) on injured reserve this week and elevated UDFA WR Jeff Smith from the practice squad with Thomas ailing.

TE Daniel Brown, WR Vyncint Smith and Shepherd must step into bigger roles on Thursday, while Le’Veon Bell will have to return from his bout with the flu and make an immediate impact. With Powell out and Montgomery banged up, it will most likely be Bell with some Josh Adams sprinkled in.

As far as Baltimore, LB Chris Beard (concussion) is out, while OT Ronnie Stanley (concussion) is doubtful. In addition, QB Lamar Jackson (quad), Mark Andrews (knee), S Anthony Levine Sr. (ankle) and DE Jihad Ward (elbow) are all listed as questionable but expected to play.
