Raiders’ Antonio Pierce attempted to lure Jessie Armstead away from Giants

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce attempted to lure Jessie Armstead away from the New York Giants to no avail.

Former New York Giants defensive captain and current Las Vegas Raiders head coach, Antonio Pierce, reportedly ‘pursued’ Giants special assistant Jesse Armstead for a similar position with the Raiders.

Armstead is apparently choosing to stay put with Big Blue.

Pierce served as the Raiders’ interim head coach after Josh McDaniels was fired midseason last year. He went 5-4 as the coach and was hired to the job full-time last month.

Armstead, like Pierce, was a former star linebacker for the Giants and has served as a Giants’ special assistant and consultant to the general manager since 2008.

As a player, Armstead was a five-time Pro Bowler and is a member of the Giants’ Ring of Honor.

Julian Love names his top 5 Giants defenders of all time

Julian Love lists his top 5 New York Giants defenders of all time which is highlighted, of course, by the legend himself, Lawrence Taylor.

New York Giants safety Julian Love has made a huge impact on defense over the past few seasons. He is a Notre Dame guy who is a student of the game.

In a recent piece on the website The 33rd Team. Love listed his top five all-time Giants defenders.

As a person who has covered this team for the past quarter century and has been an ardent fan and follower for more than 55 years, I find this list to be dead-on.

Lawrence Taylor, Michael Strahan, and Harry Carson are Hall of Famers in the Super Bowl era, which is a special accomplishment so they all belong on the list. Carl Banks and Jessie Armstead were among the best at their positions while they played, so I have no issue with them being on this list as well.

Some honorable mentions in my book from the Super Bowl era: Brad Van Pelt, Leonard Marshall, Mark Haynes, John Mendenhall, Spider Lockhart, Osi Umenyiora, and Justin Tuck.

It’s difficult to compare eras and for someone to be listed from the ’round ball’ era would be a tough call.

That being said, here is a quick list of some players from the previous era that deserve mentioning: Sam Huff, Emlen Tunnell, Andy Robustelli, Jimmy Patton, and Erich Barnes.

8 Giants among modern-era Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees

8 former members of the New York Giants are among 129 modern-era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2023.

Eight former New York Giants are among the list of 129 Modern-Era Nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

The list of potential inductees consists of “67 offensive players, 50 defensive players and 12 special teams players. The list of Modern-Era Nominees will be reduced to 25 Semifinalists in November and, from there, to 15 Finalists whose names will be announced in early January.”

Four of the Giants’ eight nominees played their entire careers with Big Blue: running back Tiki Barber, defensive lineman Justin Tuck, linebacker Jessie Armstead and offensive lineman Chris Snee.

The other four played part of their careers here with the Giants: punters Jeff Feagles and Sean Landeta, offensive tackle Lomas Brown and kick returner Brian Mitchell.

Per the Pro Football Hall of Fame:

Nineteen Finalists will be presented to the full 49-member Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee during its annual meeting to choose the Class of 2023. Those candidates will consist of 15 Modern-Era Players Finalists and the recently named Seniors Finalists Joe Klecko, Chuck Howley and Ken Riley and Coach/Contributor Finalist Don Coryell.

Report: Jessie Armstead will coach Giants OLBs in Week 15

Jessie Armstead, a long-time New York Giants linebacker, will reportedly coach the team’s outside linebackers in Week 15.

The New York Giants were forced to make several coaching staff changes on the fly this week after offensive coordinator Jason Garrett tested positive for COVID-19 and outside linebackers coach/senior defensive assistant Bret Bielema took the head coaching job at Illinois.

Tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens will assume the play calling duties with Garrett out, while the Giants announced inside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer and defensive assistant Jody Wright would split Bielema’s duties.

However, Jay Glazer reported on FOX NFL Sunday that Jessie Armstead, who currently serves as special assistant to the general manager, would descend from the front office in order to coach the outside linebackers in Week 15.

Armstead, an eighth-round pick of the Giants in the 1998 NFL Draft, spent nine of his 12 seasons in East Rutherford, earning five trips to the Pro Bowl and four All-Pro nods. He was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2010.

Glazer did not elaborate further on Armstead’s exact role or what it means for Sherrer or Wright, and also did not touch on whether or not Armstead would remain in that role over the final two weeks of the season.

Whatever the case may be, Giants fans are certain to love it. Not only was Armstead an intense and dominant linebacker during his playing days, he’s a long-time fan favorite.

Giants great Jesse Armstead to be inducted in Dallas high school HOF

Retired New York Giants linebacker Jessie Armstead will be indicted into the Dallas ISD (Independent School District) Hall of Fame.

New York Giants Ring of Honor member Jesse Armstead will be inducted into the Dallas ISD (Independent School District) Hall of Fame.

Armstead was on of seven former high school stars selected for the honor which will be given out on May 1 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.

From the Dallas Morning News:

Armstead was a star on the 1988 Carter team that went 14-0-1 on the field, beat the Odessa Permian team that inspired Friday Night Lights and defeated Converse Judson 31-14 in the Class 5A state championship game. But a disputed algebra grade for star running back/cornerback Gary Edwards sparked an investigation by the University Interscholastic League and Texas Education Agency that led to a lengthy legal battle and ultimately led to the UIL stripping the Cowboys of their state title in 1991.

Armstead played 11 seasons in the NFL, nine with the New York Giants and two with the Washington Redskins. He led the NFL with 21 tackles for loss in 1999.

Armstead was selected in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft out of Miami and was a four-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler with the Giants.

Armstead has worked for the Giants as a special assistant since 2008 and is a staple on the sidelines during games.
