Oklahoma Sooners earn bowl eligibility with 28-13 win over Oklahoma State

The offense erupted early, and the defense closed out a big win over Oklahoma State 28-13 in Norman. From @john9williams

The Oklahoma Sooners came out on fire in the first quarter, putting up a record-setting 28 points on the Oklahoma State defense. After the first 15 minutes of play, it looked like a Bedlam blowout was on the way, but from the second quarter on, the Sooners struggled to get anything going on offense and the defense made the plays necessary to pick up a win over the Cowboys to move to 6-5 on the season and gain bowl eligibility.

[autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] was hot in the first quarter, going 14 of 18 for 224 yards and two touchdowns, hitting [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] and [autotag]Drake Stoops[/autotag] on beautiful deep balls down the right sideline. Gabriel added a touchdown on the ground

But after the first quarter, the offense struggled to find any footing. Two turnovers in the second quarter took points off the board, and Oklahoma’s struggles on third down continued. After converting just one third down a week ago against West Virginia, the Sooners struggled again on third down against Oklahoma State, going 1 for 14.

While the offense struggled, the Sooners’ defense played one of their best games of the season. It wasn’t perfect, but they came up with big plays in big situations to limit Oklahoma State to 13 points despite [autotag]Spencer Sanders[/autotag] throwing for 381 yards.

Oklahoma collected four Spencer Sanders interceptions and, with how they were flying around the ball, had several more opportunities to take the ball away from Sanders and the Cowboys. The Sooners’ defense also collected six sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

The Sooners’ defense bailed out an offense that produced just 135 yards of total offense over the final three quarters and no points. Dillon Gabriel was 6 for 22 after his efficient first quarter, for 35 yards and one interception. Though the finish wasn’t great for the Sooners’ offense, that first quarter would be all they needed on the night.

Drake Stoops had an incredible game in what could be his final home game as a Sooner. He led the Sooners with six receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown and made two incredible catches. One put the Sooners inside the five-yard line before their first score of the game, and the second closed Oklahoma’s scoring outburst in the first half.

After his 211-yard performance in last week’s loss to West Virginia, [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag] ran for 90 yards on 20 carries and picked up 30 yards on three receptions. Jovantae Barnes had a good game as well, carrying the ball six times for 59 yards.

Defensively, [autotag]David Ugwoegbu[/autotag] led the team with 10 tackles, but [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag] (9), [autotag]DaShaun White[/autotag] (8), and [autotag]Woodi Washington[/autotag] (8) were right behind him. Washington made a couple of touchdown-saving tackles in the game. One on defense after [autotag]Braydon Johnson[/autotag] broke away from [autotag]C.J. Coldon[/autotag] for a big catch and run. The other came on special teams when [autotag]Brennan Presley[/autotag] was attempting a return. While blocked, Washington stuck his arm out to bring down the shifty playmaker to prevent him from getting into the open field.

In addition to his eight tackles, White added a sack and an interception to continue his strong play of late from the Cheetah position. [autotag]Jordan Kelley[/autotag], [autotag]Isaiah Coe[/autotag], and [autotag]Jalen Redmond[/autotag] each had great games from their interior defensive line positions. Kelley had two sacks and six total tackles. Coe had five total tackles, 0.5 sacks, and two tackles for loss. [autotag]Ethan Downs[/autotag] had a sack, while [autotag]Jonah Lau’lu[/autotag] had five total tackles, 0.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, and an interception.

The Sooners picked up a win over an in-state rival, and while it wasn’t pretty on offense for much of the game, the defense made plays in key moments to pick up a win and provide a glimpse of what a [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] defense could look like in Norman.

With some uncertainty about how many Bedlam games there are before Oklahoma moves to the SEC, picking up this win in Brent Venables’ first Bedlam matchup while keeping Mike Gundy from winning two in a row against the Sooners was a great way to finish off the home schedule for 2022.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 24 Oklahoma State Cowboys: Sooners Wire staff predictions

Oklahoma looks to get back on the right side of the win column when they host No. 24 Oklahoma State. Here are this week’s Sooners Wire Staff predictions.

The Oklahoma Sooners (5-5 and 2-5) will host their Bedlam counterparts the Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-3, 4-3) on what will be a cold Saturday night in Norman.

The Sooners need a win in the worst way. They’re on a two-game losing streak and haven’t clicked on either side of the ball in crunch time. Taking on an Oklahoma State team that’s also in the midst of a disappointing season, the Sooners are 7.5-point favorites at home.

Can the Sooners end their losing skid and reach bowl eligibility? let’s take a look at how the Sooners Wire staff predicted the 117th matchup between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in Bedlam.

The Cowboys were hit hard when [autotag]Jim Knowles[/autotag] left for Ohio State. Their defense ranks at the bottom of the Big 12 in nearly every category.

The OU offense is going to attack, attack, and attack some more. This has the potential to be like the Kansas game, in which the Sooners racked up over 700 yards.

The nonsense ends tonight. The Sooners WILL get a decisive Big 12 victory against Oklahoma State at home under the lights. Eric Gray will run hog wild all over the Pokes for 150 and a score.

Marvin Mims will have a bounceback game, getting a score and over 100 yards.

Oklahoma Sooners at West Virginia Mountaineers: Stream, injury report, broadcast info

Trying to figure out where to find the Sooners game on Saturday? Here’s how to watch, stream or listen to Oklahoma at West Virginia. From @john9williams

Oklahoma (5-4, 2-4 Big 12) will face West Virginia (3-6, 1-5) on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

Heading into the Sooners’ week 11 contest with the West Virginia Mountaineers, Oklahoma finds itself once again in bounce-back mode. It’s unfamiliar territory, as Oklahoma hasn’t lost more than two games in a season since 2014. The Sooners have won fewer than 10 games just five times since 1999, one season being the COVID-shortened 2020 season in which they went 9-2.

With three games remaining, the Sooners are fighting for bowl eligibility. It’s a low bar by Oklahoma standards, but winning out and playing in and winning a bowl game are the last accomplishable goals for this team this season.

The Sooners need to finish strong to build positive momentum heading into the offseason and to close out their top 10 recruiting class. It all starts Saturday against last-place in the Big 12 West Virginia.

Oklahoma at West Virginia Mountaineers: Sooners Wire staff predictions

Oklahoma looks to get back on the right side of the win column on the road against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Sooners Wire Staff predictions.

The Oklahoma Sooners (5-4 and 2-4) look to rebound from their loss a week ago to the Baylor Bears on the road against the West Virginia Mountaineers (3-6, 1-5). The Sooners are undefeated since West Virginia joined the Big 12. They’ve won nine in a row, and generally, they’ve been high-scoring affairs. Last year’s 16-13 win in Norman was an aberration, to say the least.

Against Baylor, the Sooners’ offense couldn’t get out of its own way, and the defense couldn’t stop a Baylor rushing attack that put up 281 yards, led by Craig Williams’ 192.

Oklahoma will look to bounce back with a cleaner performance on the road in what is generally perceived to be a tough place to play, even if that hasn’t been the case for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Let’s get ready for Saturday with this week’s staff predictions.

5 Sooners to watch on offense vs. West Virginia

Getting ready to take on one of the worst pass defenses in the country, which Sooners are due for a big game on the road vs. West Virginia. From @bendackiw

After an uncharacteristicly sloppy day from the Oklahoma Sooners’ offense, OU heads into Morgantown to face the 3-6 West Virginia Mountaineers.

Bowl eligibility has become a tiresome topic, but it’s going to continue to be brought up until the Sooners get that elusive sixth win.

The offense needs a more consistent performance against the Mountaineers. Let’s take a look at five players to watch on Jeff Lebby’s offense.

Final thoughts on the Oklahoma Sooners vs. Baylor Bears

Final thoughts on the Oklahoma Sooners vs. the Baylor Bears Saturday afternoon in Norman. From @john9williams

The Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the Baylor Bears on Saturday in a matchup between 5-3 teams that were two of the favorites to make the Big 12 title game. Though both still have a mathematical chance to make it, Baylor’s road to Arlington is much more clear.

The Sooners can upset those plans with a win today, but beyond that, Oklahoma is looking to finish the season strong after and 0-3 start to the Big 12 schedule.

As the Sooners welcome a strong Baylor run game and formidable defensive front, here are some final thoughts on Oklahoma’s Big 12 tilt vs. the Baylor Bears.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Baylor Bears: Stream, injury report, broadcast info

Trying to figure out where to find the Sooners game on Saturday? Here’s how to watch, stream or listen to Oklahoma vs. Baylor Bears. From @john9williams

Oklahoma (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) will face Baylor (5-3, 3-2) on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Sooners hold a 28-4 edge over the Baylor Bears all-time. However, since 2011, the series has been much closer. Oklahoma is just 8-4 vs. the Bears over the last 12 matchups, including the 2019 Big 12 title game.

From 2011 to 2014, the Bears went 3-1 against the Sooners, and Oklahoma responded by winning seven straight until Baylor ended Oklahoma’s perfect 2021 with a 27-14 win in Waco.

Now, the Sooners are playing for progress and pride and get the opportunity to play spoiler. Baylor still has a shot at the Big 12 title game but would need to win out in order to do so. This won’t be an easy contest as the Bears are averaging 38 points per game on the season. Can the improving Sooners’ defense take another step in the right direction?

We’ll find out on Saturday afternoon.

‘He’s just down to do whatever’: Jalil Farooq’s mentality taking his game to another level

It may have been a slow start to the season for Jalil Farooq, but the Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver has come on strong with a whatever it takes attitude. From @john9williams

After a strong showing in the Alamo Bowl, there was an expectation that [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] was destined for a breakout season. But in the first two games of the season, Farooq felt like an afterthought in the passing game.

Against UTEP and Kent State, the sophomore wide receiver saw just five targets and had one reception for nine yards, hardly what was anticipated after producing three catches for 64 yards against Oregon at the end of last season.

During the week following Oklahoma’s 33-3 win over Kent State, Jeff Lebby expressed confidence in Farooq and believed that a breakout was coming. And he was right.

In the Nebraska game, Farooq had three receptions for 58 yards and his first career touchdown in the Sooners’ 49-14 win in Lincoln. And he’s been an important cog in the offense ever since. The following week against Kansas State, Farooq set career highs in receptions with five and yards with 68.

Against TCU, he didn’t get many opportunities to catch the ball with Dillon Gabriel suffering a concussion, but with the injury to Billy Bowman, Farooq was slotted in as the kick returner and averaged 31 yards per return, nearly breaking a couple with one going for 47 yards in an attempt to spark a listless offense.

Again, against Texas, with Gabriel sitting out, there weren’t many opportunities for the pass catchers, but that didn’t stop Farooq from making an impact. With the Sooners running primarily a wildcat offense, he carried the ball five times for 60 yards, showing off a tough running style. He averaged 12 yards per carry and six yards per carry after contact. He had three runs of 10 yards or more, two of which went for 15 yards or more.

Now, with [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] back for the last two games, Farooq’s benefitted. In the last two contests, Farooq has been targeted eight times. He’s picked up eight receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. Against Iowa State, he rushed for 26 yards on two carries.

Like fan favorite and team captain [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], Jalil Farooq shows up ready to do all the little things it takes for the Oklahoma Sooners to be productive.

“Just he’s really athletic and can do many things. And I think the beauty of him is he can play inside, he can play outside,” quarterback Dillon Gabriel said. “You can get them in the run game, and then also he’s just really good on the perimeter blocking. So, just having his type of body type but then also his mentality, he’s just down to do whatever and wanting to get the ball or help out in every single way he can.”

Over the course of the season, Jalil Farooq’s displayed an versatility and “whatever it takes” attitude that is invaluable for a football team.

And boy, he displayed great toughness, certainly a versatile skill set, made a couple of huge plays,” [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] said in his weekly media appearance. “We gave him the Play of the Game, and we gave him the Player of the Game. He had 100-plus total yards on the day. But played with tremendous will and passion and toughness that can deflate. You know, he’s over there on their sideline on a couple of them, and that’s deflating when you see a guy just showing tremendous will and toughness. But he has developed that, too. And he’s earned his first captain position this week through his work and his consistency and his dedication and his toughness.”

There’s something infectious about watching a player take Jalil Farooq’s approach. It doesn’t matter if it’s on special teams, in the running game, or fulfilling the role that brought him to Norman, Farooq’s become an important player for the Oklahoma Sooners offense. As Marvin Mims looks destined for the NFL in 2023, the Sooners needed to figure out who will be their go-to wide receiver, and Jalil Farooq’s saying, “here I am, feed me.”

Report Card: Trench warfare, special teams set the tone for Oklahoma win over Iowa State

Oklahoma was stout in the trenches, and the special teams shined in Oklahoma’s win over Iowa State. Here’s how each position group performed in the weekly report card. From @thatmanbryant

Oklahoma’s win against Iowa State wasn’t a flashy endeavor. But it was a two touchdown win over a team that hadn’t lost a Big 12 game by more than a touchdown.

The Sooners’ 27-13 win over Iowa State was a combined effort that saw some inspired performances from several areas. It truly was a team win.

Here’s how Oklahoma graded out by position group for their performance against Iowa State.
