Jalen Pickett among 15 Wooden Award Finalists

Here is a look at all 15 finalists for this season’s Wooden Award in men’s college basketball.

Penn State senior guard [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] is having one of the best seasons in program history.

During a victory against Illinois, he set the Bryce Jordan Center record for most points in a game with 41. He set the all-time single-season record for most assists in a season, breaking Tim Frazier’s record of 198. Pickett also will set the most assists per game record and surpassed 2,000 career points.

It’s been a phenomenal season for the senior out of Rochester, NY.

Head coach, [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], has been pounding the table for more eyes across the country to notice how well Pickett has been playing this year.

It seems like that message got through because Pickett is one of the 15 finalists for the Wooden Award. This award, named after legendary coach [autotag]John Wooden[/autotag], goes to the Player of the Year in both men’s and women’s basketball.

The award is voted on by 1,000 sports writers and media professionals across the country. The top 10 will be named All-Americans, with the player receiving the most votes winning the Wooden Award.

It’s a highly coveted award that some of the biggest names in the sports have won. The first award was given to [autotag]Marques Johnson[/autotag] of UCLA in the 1976-77 season.

Here are the 15 finalists for 2022-23.

Twitter reacts to Penn State’s overtime win at Northwestern

Twitter was electric after Penn State basketball stunned Northwestern in overtime.

Penn State’s season got a major boost Wednesday night when they defeated a tough Northwestern team on the road in overtime. They have been on the NCAA tournament bubble for the entire season it seems and despite a loss to Rutgers last week, they somehow still have a chance to dance.

Northwestern has won against Purdue, Michigan State, and Indiana twice this year. While Penn State doesn’t have the same distinctions, they now get a bit of it due to the win last night.

Twitter was buzzing of course after a win like that and these are some of the best reactions.

Penn State may have saved its NCAA Tournament hopes with a huge road win at Northwestern on Wednesday night. Camren Wynter’s game-winning shot in the final second of overtime put a much-needed road win against a good quality opponent likely heading to the tournament on its resume and with just one game left to play in the regular season, Penn State still has a shot at playing its way into the big dance.

Penn State still has one final game left to play in the regular season before heading to the Big Ten tournament next week, but the win over the Wildcats kept Penn State out of the bottom four seeds in the conference tournament. Penn State will host Maryland on Sunday for the regular-season finale. A win at home against the Terps should have Penn State feeling a little more confident heading to the Big Ten tournament, but topping the Terps will not be easy for Jalen Pikcett and the Nittany Lions.

Here are some of the best photos from Penn State’s big road win against Northwestern.

Penn State stuns Northwestern at the buzzer in overtime

Penn State picked up a much-needed win on the road in exhilarating fashion at Northwestern

It is now March. It’s time for the best basketball of the season to be played right now.

After Penn State’s heartbreaking collapse at home on Sunday versus Rutgers, it seemed like their NCAA Tournament hopes were all but over. Coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] stressed after the game that he had confidence in his team to be able to respond on the road against Northwestern in their Senior Night game.

That was a high vote of confidence considering Penn State’s road struggles this season and Northwestern’s success at home with only four prior losses.

Shrewsberry was right. His team responded and pulled off a huge road upset in overtime.

Senior guard [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] was sensational. He scored a game-high 24 points with four threes. His most important one of the night came at the buzzer in overtime.

[autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] missed a fadeaway with eight seconds left. Freshman forward [autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] outhustled three Wildcats and corralled the offensive rebound. He then threw a pass back to [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] who found Wynter in the corner for an open three.

Dagger. Game winner.

It wasn’t easy for the Nittany Lions. They started the game slow, scoring five points in the first eight minutes of the game. With over seven minutes left in the first half they were in a 10-point hole.

The offense eventually came late in the half. They scored 14 points in the last five and a half minutes to go into the locker room down four.

Two minutes into the second half, Penn State took their first lead of the game since it was 5-3 in the opening minutes. After that, this game was a dogfight.

It felt like Northwestern was going to pull away at any point. The patented home Big Ten team run was right around the corner. But every time they started to pull away, a Penn State player would hit a big shot to keep them in the game.

There were three ties and five lead changes in the second half, including the last minute being tied at 61.

Right at the end of regulation Funk had a wide-open look to win it at the buzzer, but the three rimmed out.

After the poor shooting from seniors Funk and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] on Sunday, they responded with big-time shots on the road. Each player hit four threes and combined to go 8-18 from deep. Funk finished with 17 points and eight big rebounds. Lundy finished with 14 points and six rebounds of his own.

But it was Wynter time in this one. The senior guard has been on a tear lately, averaging 18ppg in his last four games. This was his most important game in a Penn State uniform, keeping their March Madness dreams alive.

Pickett had a quiet scoring night, but finished with 11 assists and set the Penn State all-time record for assists in a season. Northwestern senior guard [autotag]Boo Buie[/autotag] finished with 20 points. Sophomore guard [autotag]Brooks Barnhizer[/autotag] added 19 off the bench.

Penn State’s next game will be at Noon on Sunday against Maryland. This will be their Senior Night game where they honor the seniors in the program.

The game will air on Big Ten Network.

Is Bleacher Report’s Player of the Year top 10 snubbing Jalen Pickett?

Where does Penn State star Jalen Pickett stand in the race for player of the year?

The Penn State Nittany Lions men’s basketball team has just two games left in their regular season and they are on the brink of a potential NCAA tournament bid thanks to [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag].

The Nittany Lions currently sit just outside most bracketology projections and have a record of 17-12. Former transfer player turned star Jalen Pickett has played a major role in them finding what success they have had this year. His solid all-around play has the team and fans thinking about the NCAA tournament but should they also be thinking he can earn a player of the year award as well?

Bleacher Report published their player of the year rankings for college basketball and Pickett finds himself just out of their top ten.

“Pickett is our highest-ranked player from an unranked team, but certain exceptions need to be made when someone is averaging 16, seven, and seven,” Bleacher Report said about Pickett. “Even if he drops a bit off those paces and finishes at 15, 6.5, and 6.5, he’d be just the fifth player in the past three decades to pull it off…”

That elite company he is keeping with his statistical standing is the driving force for any discussion surrounding his worthiness for the award. While he most likely won’t win it, Bleacher Report backed up the Nittany Lion further by adding “in two games thus far against Michigan State and Illinois, Pickett is at 16.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists.”

Seeing that Pickett has performed well not against bad teams but rather the better teams makes him stand out even further. With two strong performances to end the regular season along with a strong Big ten tournament encore act and potential NCAA tournament birth then he has an even better chance.

Worth noting, Pickett is the third-ranked Big Ten player behind Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis and Purdue’s Zach Edey.

Penn State collapses in second half to lose heartbreaker against Rutgers

Bubble burst? Penn State’s second-half collapse vs. Rutgers was a bad look for tournament hopes.

The loud popping sound coming from State College was Penn State’s March Madness bubble bursting. At the final buzzer Sunday night, the chances of getting an outright bid vanished.

Up 19 at one point in the second half, Penn State fell to Rutgers 59-56.

This game was extremely important for the Nittany Lions. They started to play their best basketball at the most important time of the season in the past couple of weeks. Coming into this game, they were riding a three-game winning streak, including two on the road.

Early on, it looked like Penn State was well on its way to a fourth in a row. They used a 22-4 run to take a 26-9 lead with five minutes left in the first half.

Everything was rolling in the first half. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] had 11 points and [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] 10 points. They went into the locker room up 31-21.

Then, wheels fell off the wagon in the second half.

After starting with a 9-0 run to push the lead to 19 points, it was all downhill from there. The offense, which is normally so good at home, was dreadful.

Penn State finished the game shooting 37.0% from the field and 27.6% from three. Only seven field goals were made the entire second half, three of which came during the early 9-0 run.

After scoring 11 points in the first half, Pickett was held scoreless the rest of the way. Senior guards [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] and [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] went a combined 2-23 from the floor and 1-18 from three.

Penn State went nine minutes down the stretch without a made field goal, missing the last 14 shots they attempted. The cold stretch was enough for Rutgers to close the gap and escape State College with a win.

Freshman guard [autotag]Derek Simpson[/autotag] led the way for Rutgers with 16 points off the bench. Senior guards [autotag]Cam Spencer[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb McConnell[/autotag] were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.

Wynter finished with a team high 16 points for Penn State. Pickett was the only other person in double figures with 11.

It was the worst time of the year to have one of the worst performances all season. Putting it frankly, it was also an unacceptable loss.

Coming off a stretch that put him in All-American contention, Pickett can’t go scoreless in the second half of one of the most important games of the year. He didn’t attempt a shot in the second half. Lundy can’t go 0-11 from three at home in this type of game.

The best players are supposed to step up and make plays when things are difficult. That didn’t happen for this Penn State team on Sunday.

Now, by most accounts, the hopes for an at large bid is almost all but gone.

Head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] said in the postgame press conference that he’s not worried about his team for the remainder of the season, citing the fact there are more games to play.

We’ll see how Penn State responds Wednesday night when they go on the road to face second place Northwestern.

Where Penn State basketball stands in Joe Lunardi’s bracket with one week remaining

Here is Penn State’s bracketology situation entering the final week of the regular season according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi

Penn State’s recent back-to-back wins against two of the bottom feeders in the Big Ten standings was enough to regain some momentum for the Nittany Lions and their hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament. But ESPN bracketologist has Penn State sitting just on the outside of the tournament as the final week of the regular season gets underway.

Lunardi’s most recent update to his bracketology outlook occurred after Penn State’s road win at Ohio State, with the most recent update to his bracketology being posted Friday morning before this weekend’s scheduled games. The next time Lunardi updates his bracket will be after Penn State’s home game against Rutgers, and the stakes continue to be high with every game played by the Nittany Lions.  Lunardi currently has Penn State as his first team out of the NCAA Tournament, so a strong finish to the regular season could be enough to get Penn State into the big dance regardless of what happens in the Big Ten tournament, however, it would certainly help to win a couple of games in the Big Ten tournament too.

For those looking to see how Penn State is doing compared to other teams on the bubble, Lunardi’s last four teams in include Wisconsin, USC, Oklahoma State, and Mississippi State. Penn State went 0-2 against the Badgers this season, so that obviously does not help Penn State’s case if a spot in the tournament comes down to the Nittany Lions and Badgers.

The next three teams out according to Lunardi behind Penn State are Utah State, North Carolina, and Charleston. It is hard to ignore the possibility that UNC could get in just based on the basketball brand compared to Penn State if it comes down to those two schools. Penn State didn’t get to face Charleston in this season’s Charleston Classic at the beginning of the season. Utah State is a bit of a threat as well, but [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] could prove to be a difference maker to help Penn State keep an edge over the other schools just missing the cut too.

Lunardi’s last four teams in getting a bye from the opening round include Pittsburgh, Nevada, Memphis, and West Virginia.

Penn State will have an opportunity to improve its bracket outlook this week. Penn State hosts Rutgers on Sunday evening, visits Northwestern on Wednesday, and hosts Maryland for the regular-season finale next Sunday, March 5. All three opponents are currently single-seeded teams in Lunardi’s bracketology. If Penn State goes 2-1 against these three schools before the Big Ten tournament, that would be a nice boost to the tournament profile for the Nittany Lions. Going 1-2 would likely dig a deeper hole to climb out of in the Big Ten tournament.

Going 3-0 though, well that would probably make Penn State a near lock for a spot in the tournament.

But first, Rutgers.

Penn State at Rutgers basketball: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Sunday

How to watch Penn State basketball look for revenge against Rutgers on Sunday evening.

Penn State basketball looks to continue its winning streak with the regular season winding to a close. On Sunday evening, the Nittany Lions host Rutgers for a key game that could help dictate seeding in the Big Ten basketball tournament. Rutgers throttled Penn State in the previous meeting in New Jersey earlier this season, 65-45, but Penn State sits just one game behind Rutgers in the Big Ten standings.

Penn State faces a challenging final three games to the regular season beginning with Sunday’s home game against Rutgers. Following that is a road trip to Northwestern and a regular-season finale at home against Maryland. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] has put the team on his back and he will be instrumental in guiding Penn State to the Big Ten tournament with momentum, starting Sunday against the Scarlet Knights.

Here is how to catch all of the Penn State basketball action on Sunday.

Twitter reacts to Penn State’s clutch win at Ohio State

Twitter could not get enough of Jalen Pickett’s performance in a clutch win for Penn State vs. the Buckeyes.

With their NCAA tournament hopes resting on the bubble as the regular season crawls to a close, Penn State picked up a big win on the road Thursday night with a 75-71 victory at Ohio State. As has been the theme of the season, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] elevated his game when needed to carry the Nittany Lions to a much-needed victory.

Pickett had Twitter buzzing with his heroic performance after the game, as he continues to make a case for All-American consideration, and may be pushing for First-Team accolades as well.

Here is a look at some of the best reactions on Twitter following Penn State’s victory over the Buckeyes.

Jalen Pickett leads Penn State to important road win at Ohio State

Jalen Pickett put Penn State on his back and carried them to a key road win at Ohio State.

The goal is simple for Penn State. Win out and they’ll have a shot of going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 12 years.

After starting February with three straight losses, Penn State is now riding a three-game win streak after Tuesday’s 75-71 win over Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

The game was spectacular. The two teams went back and forth throughout the 40 minutes of game time.

Coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] made sure his team knew they had to get off to an early start. The team listened and took an 11-8 lead four minutes into the game.

Then, it was a rollercoaster ride of who held the lead.

There were 12 lead changes in the first half alone, including a four minute stretch where every basket scored changed the lead.

When the first half buzzer sounded, the game was tied 37-37.

But things could have gone off the rails early for Penn State.

Coming into this game, the Nittany Lions had two road wins all season. They have not been the same team away from home and this was their second road game in a row.

Then, seven minutes into the game, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] picked up his second foul. Their best player had to sit for a good chunk of time.

The senior guards rose to the occasion. [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] scored 14 points and [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] 11 in the first half to keep Penn State in the game.

The rollercoaster ride continued in the second half. There were eight more lead changes for a total of 20. When there wasn’t a lead change, the game was tied five times.

After scoring just two points at the break, Pickett wasn’t going to stay quiet for long.

He completely took the game over in the second half, scoring 21 of his 23 points in the period, including the dagger.

Up one with a minute left, Pickett isolated Ohio State freshman [autotag]Brice Sensabaugh[/autotag]. He made layup and drew a foul to give Penn State a 73-69 lead.

Four points was all the separation the Nittany Lions needed to close out the game as Ohio State missed five consecutive three pointers on the final possession.

Pickett’s 23 points led the game. Lundy finished with 19 points and Wynter with 18. The Ohio State freshmen guards Sensabaugh and [autotag]Bruce Thornton[/autotag] scored 20 and 19 points respectively.

This was an impressive win for Penn State. The Big Ten leader in three pointers, [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag], didn’t make a single one in this game. Other players had to fill the void when Pickett went out with foul trouble.

It feels like Penn State is starting to hit their stride at just the right time.

Their three remaining games on the schedule are all classified as Quad 1. Winning those games are the most important criteria the committee looks at when determining at large invitations.

Penn State plays Rutgers in the Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday night. This will be a rematch from earlier in the year when the Nittany Lions lost on the road.

The game will be air on Big Ten Network starting at 6:30 p.m. ET.
