Oklahoma has the most starting quarterbacks in the NFL

Week one of the NFL season is underway and Oklahoma is proving why it’s QBU once again.

Oklahoma is still the place to go if you want to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League.

The NFL season is officially underway, with the 2024 campaign beginning on Thursday night. All 32 teams have selected their starting quarterbacks for the season and, predictably, the Oklahoma Sooners were well represented.

FOX College Football celebrated the beginning of the NFL season breaking down where each of the 32 starters went to college. To get the season going, the Sooners have the most starting quarterbacks in week one with three.

OU was one of only seven schools with multiple starters. Oregon, Clemson, Cal, Alabama, USC, and LSU had two each.

https://twitter.com/CFBONFOX/status/1831447607706894612

Of course, the Sooners are represented by three of the finest players in the past decade of college football. [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag], [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag], and [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag] are responsible for five [autotag]Big 12[/autotag] championships and four [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] appearances over five years. Mayfield also led OU to a win in the Sugar Bowl after the 2016 season, in what would be [autotag]Bob Stoops[/autotag]’ final game as the program’s head coach.

All three former Sooner greats play in the NFC. Mayfield signed a new three-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason after leading them to the playoffs. Kyler Murray, with Arizona, and Jalen Hurts, with Philadelphia, are among the top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL in terms of average annual salary, according to OverTheCap.com.

Hurts and the Eagles begin their season on Friday night in Sao Paolo, Brazil against Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers. Murray and the Cardinals head to Buffalo to take on Josh Allen and the Bills on Sunday. Mayfield get to open the season at home with the Washington Commanders and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels coming to town.

Oklahoma’s number doesn’t include [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] (Bears), who spent the 2021 season in Norman before transferring to USC after his head coach left.

Sooner fans hope that their current quarterback, [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], can join this list in a few years after a successful run under head coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] at OU.

Last time Oklahoma faced Houston, there were plenty of fireworks

The Oklahoma Sooners and Houston Cougars have played twice in the last decade. Can the Sooners get a win this Saturday night?

The Oklahoma Sooners will look to improve to 2-0 on the 2024 season when they host the Houston Cougars on Saturday night. The two programs have faced off twice in the last decade, splitting the matchups, but this time around is a little different. Oklahoma is in their first season as a member of the [autotag]SEC[/autotag], while Houston, previously of the AAC, enters Year 2 in the [autotag]Big 12[/autotag].

Back in 2016, the No. 15 Cougars upset the third-ranked Sooners in the Advocare Texas Kickoff game by a score of 33-23. The game was played at NRG Stadium in Houston. Though OU lost the season opener to fall to 0-1, the Sooners would bounce back with an 11-2 season, winning the Big 12 and the Sugar Bowl in [autotag]Bob Stoops[/autotag]’ final year at the helm.

But the most recent matchup between these teams came just five years ago. Opening the 2019 season on a Sunday night at home, the No. 4 Sooners defeated the Cougars by a score of 49-31. The game marked the debut of [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag] in Norman, as he broke onto the scene in a big way.

Hurts completed 20 of 23 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He added 176 yards rushing on 16 carries and three more touchdowns on the ground. It was the beginning of an excellent season that ended with Hurts as the [autotag]Heisman Trophy[/autotag] runner-up. A performance like that from current OU starter, [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], would certainly thrill Sooner fans everywhere and answer a few questions about the Oklahoma offense.

https://twitter.com/HoHighlights/status/1168361233902256128

Oklahoma would finish 12-2, win the Big 12, and make a trip to the [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag], all beginning with that win over Houston.

The third matchup between the Sooners and the Cougars since 2016 will also feature the third different matchup of head coaches. Bob Stoops faced Tom Herman in 2016, [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] faced Dana Holgerson in 2019 and [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] will face Willie Fritz in 2024.

Oklahoma will kick things off against Houston at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday in Norman.

Lamar Jackson to be featured in Michael Vick’s docuseries on evolution of the black QB

Former Philadelphia Eagles star Michael Vick to lead a new, 8-part Amazon Prime docuseries on the evolution of the Black quarterback in America

Michael Vick, the executive producer, will be coming to a television screen near you, thanks to a partnership between the former No. 1 overall pick and SMAC ProductionsFubo Studios.

NFL on Prime Video announced Vick’s new, 8-part docuseries on the evolution of the Black quarterback in America, which will premiere September 24.

He will interview players and coaches in the docuseries, including Patrick Mahomes, Cam Newton, Warren Moon, Doug Williams, Tony Dungy, and Andy Reid.

It’s the first project for the newly formed Fubo Studios.

“I’m excited to be a part of this project because as a kid, I just wanted to have a shot at playing in the National Football League. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the first African American quarterback drafted #1. I know that was a big step for us in society,” Vick said in a statement. “I was always told that I revolutionized the quarterback position, but I also like to give credit to the ones who I idolized as a kid and who paved the way like Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair, and Donovan McNabb. When you look at the evolution of the Black quarterback, it’s because of the people that came before us. And now, I’m thankful for the dual threat concept that has changed the game for the better.”

The Fox NFL analyst and his wife, Kijafa Vick, SMAC Productions’ Constance Schwartz-Morini, and Fubo Studios’ David Gandler and Pamela Duckworth serve as executive producers. Several former Eagles to appear in Michael Vick’s docuseries on evolution of the black QB

The NFL was a league that once had a dark history of slighting and disrespecting black quarterbacks. Still, Philadelphia and the Eagles organization has been the gold standard in reversing the trend.

The Eagles made Randall Cunningham the franchise’s first black quarterback.

Drafted 37th overall in the 1985 NFL draft, Cunningham played 11 seasons in Philly before injuries caused him to be benched in favor of another black quarterback, Rodney Peete, in 1995.

Cunningham, Peete, Donovan McNabb, and Michael Vick led Eagles teams to the playoffs. Vince Young spent a season with the franchise, and Jalen Hurts has taken over the reins from Carson Wentz this season as he looks to lock in his spot long-term.

3 big questions for the Eagles ahead of season opener vs. Packers

3 big questions for the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of season opener vs. Green Bay Packers

The summer is officially over, training camp and preseason are a wrap, and the Eagles will depart Philadelphia four days from now for a 9+ hour flight to São Paulo, Brazil, for an intriguing season-opening matchup against Jordan Love and the talented Green Bay Packers.

Philadelphia has retooled its roster, changed both coordinator positions, and has one of the younger teams in the NFL entering the 2024 regular season. There are always questions to be answered, and with the regular season upon us, we’re looking at the three biggest questions for the Eagles ahead of the matchup against the Packers.

Can the young guys hit the ground running?

Cooper DeJean (21), Jeremiah Trotter (21), and Jalen Carter (23) are among the 12 players on the roster who are age 23 or younger, and all twelve play integral roles for a team with a legit Super Bowl window. The Eagles are a potential juggernaut, but an injury at a critical position on offense, or Darius Slay suffering an injury on defense, could expose a youth-filled group that could still not be ready for primetime. With Jason Kelce becoming a media giant and Fletcher Cox enjoying retirement, Philadelphia must have leadership voids filled from Day 1.

Can Jalen Hurts regain his All-Pro form?

Hurts was named to his second Pro Bowl last after starting 17 regular-season games. He completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 3,858 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns. He also added 15 rushing touchdowns, setting a new NFL record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season, matching Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. With Kellen Moore emphasizing Hurts become more efficient with check-downs to the running backs, his completion percentage could rise to over 70% in 2024. There were difficult moments in 2023, though, as Hurts’ QBR ranking fell from fourth (68.3) to 12th (60.1). His 15 interceptions nearly matched his first three years combined (18). After cleaning his game and meshing with Kellen Moore, Can Hurts regain his All-Pro form.

Will Vic Fangio’s defense respond to the pressure?

The offense can be explosive and set all kinds of records, but it won’t matter if the Eagles rebuilt defense doesn’t tackle better, make plays in coverage, and pressure and sack the quarterback. Philadelphia spent three years running some variation of Fangio’s scheme before hiring the architect. The Eagles are a young cornerback but much improved, while C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s return has brought swagger and confidence back to the unit. After a total collapse in 2023, can the Eagles’ defense regain that 2022 form?

Fantasy football: Where to draft Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts

Analyzing Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts’ 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

Below, we look at Jalen Hurts‘ 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Where should you draft Hurts?

Hurts fantasy value may be impacted this season by the retirement of C Jason Kelcewho was the anchor of the unstoppable tush-push. However, Philadelphia and Hurts will find new ways to replicate its success.

Hurts will still produce through the air and on the ground which is beneficial for any fantasy owner. The Eagles offense, including WRs A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith and former Giants RB Saquon Barkley, is expected to be among the best in the league.

Draft Hurts in the 3rd round after securing a WR1 and RB1. Drafting him early will make a difference thanks to his dual-threat ability and Philly’s use of the QB sneak in goal-line situations. When healthy, he’s good for 3,800 yards and 20+ TDs through the air and 550+ yards and 12+ TDs on the ground.

How many former Sooners made ESPN’s Top 100 NFL Players list?

How many Oklahoma Sooners were made it on ESPN’s Top 100 players in the NFL?

The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the best programs in college football when it comes to putting players in the NFL. The best of the best at OU not only get to the next level but also shine when they get to the pros.

With football season inching closer, ESPN Rank unveiled their list predicting top 100 players for the 2024 season. A total of six former Sooners made the list, spanning multiple positions.

72. Lane Johnson, T, Philadelphia Eagles

Lane Johnson spent four seasons at Oklahoma, starting on the offensive line in both 2011 and 2012. He was the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, spending his entire career in Philadelphia.

Signature stat: Johnson and his former teammate Jason Kelce are the only two offensive linemen over the past 10 seasons to both win a Super Bowl and have at least five Pro Bowl nominations.  Tim McManus, ESPN

70. Creed Humphrey, C, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs center [autotag]Creed Humphrey[/autotag] checks in two spots above Johnson at No. 70. Humphrey was a Sooner for four seasons, and was a three-year starter from 2018-2020. He was the 63rd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and has won two Super Bowls as a Chief. He signed a massive contract extension last week to stay in Kansas City.

There’s no reason to expect any kind of drop-off this season from Humphrey, who led all centers last season in pass block win rate at 98.8%… Signature stat: Humphrey did not allow a sack on Mahomes in the Chiefs’ first two playoff games in 2023 against the Dolphins and the Bills. Adam Teicher, ESPN

64. Mark Andrews, TE, Baltimore Ravens

Next up at No. 64 is Baltimore Ravens tight end [autotag]Mark Andrews[/autotag]. He is another four-year Sooner who started for three seasons from 2015-2017. Andrews was the 86th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and quickly became one of the NFL’s best tight ends. Though he has battled through injuries, he’s one of the biggest matchup nightmares in the league when he’s healthy.

Since (Lamar) Jackson’s first full season as a starting QB in 2019, Andrews ranks fourth in the NFL with 31 red zone touchdowns. Signature stat: In the past five seasons, Andrews has 347 receptions and 37 touchdown catches. Both are the second most of any tight end after Travis Kelce.” Jamison Hensley, ESPN

32. Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Jumping all the way to No. 32 on ESPN’s rankings, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag] is the next Oklahoma representative. Hurts spent just one season in Norman (2019) but was excellent in leading the Sooners to another conference title and a playoff berth. After being the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, he was chosen 53rd in the 2020 NFL Draft. Hurts has become a star in Philly, leading the Eagles to Super Bowl LVII after the 2022 season.

Given his abilities and the strong supporting cast around him, (Jalen) Hurts could return to his 2022 form, where he went 14-1 as the starter and finished second in MVP voting. Signature stat: Hurts had 15 rushing TDs last season, tied with Josh Allen (also last season) for most by a quarterback in a single season in NFL history. Hurts’ 28 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons lead all players. Tim McManus, ESPN

14. Trent Williams, T, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle [autotag]Trent Williams[/autotag] lands at No. 14 on the list. The fourth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft spent four years in Norman, becoming a starter during his true freshman season and never looking back. He was particularly impressive in 2008 and 2009, helping anchor the offensive line during his final two seasons as a Sooner.

At 36, Williams is closer to the end than the beginning, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Williams did miss two games with injury in 2023 and has yet to play a full season since he arrived in San Francisco in 2020. He remains dominant but could continue to cement his Hall of Fame status with a full season in which he once again ranks near the top of the league in pass block win rate. Signature stat: Williams’ 95.8% PBWR last season was the best among offensive tackles (ESPN Analytics/NFL Next Gen Stats). Nick Wagoner, ESPN

11. CeeDee Lamb, WR, Dallas Cowboys

Finally, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver [autotag]CeeDee Lamb[/autotag] is the highest-ranked Sooner on the list. Lamb was a starter all three years he was at Oklahoma, and a member of three straight playoff teams in Norman. In his final season, he was named a first-team All-American, after catching 62 passes for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was chosen as the 17th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Lamb is coming off a year in which he led the NFL with 135 receptions, but how will a training camp holdout impact him, at least at the start of the season? Lamb’s strength is working all three receiver spots, making it difficult for defenses to get a read on where he will be — he can even line up in the backfield. Lamb has certainly proved worthy of the No. 88 worn by Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant. Signature stat: Lamb’s 395 receptions is the third most by a player in his first four seasons in NFL history. Todd Archer, ESPN

Lamb’s holdout is over after he agreed to a historic contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys. The deal is the second-highest non-quarterback in NFL history.
