4-Down Territory: Lamar MVP, Brad Allen needs to go, Eagles or Chiefs, Worst of the Week

In this week’s “4-Down Territory,” Doug Farrar and Kyle Madson discuss Lamar Jackson, Brad Allen, Eagles or Chiefs, and the Worst of the Week.

With 17 weeks of actual football in the books for the 2023 NFL season, it’s time once again for Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire, and Kyle Madson of Niners Wire, to come to the table with their own unique brand of analysis in “4-Down Territory.”

This week, the guys have some serious questions to answer:

  1. Can anybody but Lamar Jackson be the NFL Most Valuable Player right now?
  2. It is time for the NFL to fire referee Brad Allen and his entire crew?
  3. If you had to take one of last year’s two Super Bowl teams — the Chiefs or the Eagles — which one would you be stuck with?
  4. And what was your Worst of the Week (non-officiating version)?

Chasing Ambulances

QB Will Levis – Injured his foot and was carted to the locker room. Test results will be known later in the week but the final game doesn’t matter much. Ryan Tannehill will replace him if needed.

QB Tua Tagovailoa – Left the blowout loss to the Ravens with an injury to his throwing shoulder. He was ruled out since the game was already out of hand but he said after the game that he was “good, just  sore.”

RB Christian McCaffrey – Left early in the second half because of a calf injury and never returned. HC Kyle Shanahan said that he thought that McCaffrey would be “alright”, but he didn’t know if McCaffrey would be available next week. The 49ers have sewn up the No. 1 seed and will likely rest several players. McCaffrey is unlikely to be seen until the 49ers first game in the Divisional Round.

RB Alvin Kamara – He was already questionable to play with an illness, but Kamara was active and effective until he injured his ankle in the first quarter after ten rushes. It was not known if he had a high ankle sprain or not. The Saints are the current No. 9 seed and would need help to reach the playoffs next week.

WR Tee Higgins – Left the game with a hamstring injury but managed to return in the third quarter.

WR Devonta Smith – Was injured while blocking near the end of the game. He was on crutches with a walking boot after the game. The prognosis wasn’t released but there should be more information early in the week. The injury was serious enough for the boot and crutches which throws a shadow onto Week 18 when they finish up at the Giants.

WR Jayden Reed – He had already caught two touchdowns when he injured his chest during the second quarter in the win over the Vikings. He underwent CT scans after the game but his prognosis has not been disclosed. The Packers host the Bears next week and need all hands on deck since the Packers are currently the No. 7 seed.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

QB  Jordan Love – He was likely on many benches if his fantasy owner even made the playoffs, but the Packers quarterback is looking better and erasing some of the early season fears. He threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns at the Vikings and rushed in a touchdown as well.

RB Kyren Williams – Taken as just running back depth in summer drafts, the Rams tailback has become an elite producer and fantasy team owners in large contests did very well in Week 17 when he ran for 87 yards, gained 14 yards on two catches and totaled three touchdowns.

RB James Conner – Playing at the Eagles meant lowering expectations against the No. 1 defense against running backs. Except Conner rushed for 128 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns as a visitor.

RB Justice Hill – The Ravens lost Keaton Mitchell, so they just switched back to Hill as the RB2. The third-down back ran for 48 yards on three carries and caught five passes for 64 yards and one score. Any back on that powerhouse team carries fantasy value.

WR Julio Jones – The Eagles receiver caught two passes for 34 yards in the loss to the Cardinals. But he scored on each and Philly may be without DeVonta Smith.

TE Isaiah Likely – The replacement for Mark Anderson is becoming a factor in games thanks to playing in an offense that likes to throw to tight ends. Likely made a one-handed catch on a reception and while he only caught two passes for 42 yards, he caught two of the eight touchdowns by a tight end this week.

TE David Njoku – Since Joe Flacco showed up, Njoku was a scoring machine with a touchdown in four straight games. He failed to score this week, but led the position with 134 yards on six catches.

WR Bo Melton – The Packers wideout was called up from the practice squad to help cover for all the wideout injuries in Week 17. He responded by leading the Packers with nine targets for six catches and 105 yards with a touchdown. It was the first 100-yard performance by any Packer receiver this year.

RB Najee Harris – He lost his job as a receiver out of the backfield, and was listed below Jaylen Warren on the depth chart. He never had a 100-yard game and scored just once in the last month. So right when you need him the most and trust him the least, Harris turned in a season-best 122 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns.

CeeDee Lamb  –  He was already well represented on fantasy playoff teams and then helped to deliver the trophy for many when he caught 13 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown. 41.7 fantasy points is a difference-maker.

National reaction to Ravens clinching No. 1 seed in AFC with 56-19 win over Dolphins

We’re looking at the national reaction to the Baltimore Ravens clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a 56-19 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 17

The Ravens are champions of the AFC North and the No. 1 seed in the conference after dismantling the Miami Dolphins, 56-19 on Sunday afternoon.

In a scene that can only be dominant and brutal, Lamar Jackson was near perfect on the afternoon, likely wrapping up his second MVP award since 2019.

With preparation for the finale against Pittsburgh starting to begin, we’re looking at the national reaction to this win.

Highlights and takeaways from first half as Ravens hold a 28-13 lead over Dolphins

We’re looking at highlights and takeaways from first half as the Baltimore Ravens hold a 28-13 lead over the Miami Dolphins at M&T Bank Stadium in Week 17

The Ravens were physical, held the Dolphins to 269 yards in the first half, and converted both red zone attempts to amass a 28-13 lead over Miami in the first half of their AFC Showdown.

Baltimore had 313 yards of total offense and one significant turnover that led to pints, while Tua Tagovalioa was 14 of 26 for 183 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT with Jaylen Waddle out of the lineup.

Miami also lost star cornerback Xavien Howard for the game with an injury.

As the second half begins, here are highlights and takeaways from the first half.

Lamar Jackson appears to be very “quarterbacky” against the Dolphins

There are those who still think Lamar Jackson isn’t sufficiently “quarterbacky.” Jackson is shoving that stupid narrative right where it belongs.

We will not mention the “analyst” or the “analyst’s” affiliation, but there was one particular radio meathead who said this week that perhaps Lamar Jackson wasn’t “quarterbacky” enough. This is a ridiculous conceit best left to the vagaries of time (and perhaps Bill Polian’s closet), but if you had any questions about Lamar Jackson’s “quarterbackiness,” the Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback is doing everything in his power against the Miami Dolphins’ defense.

The Ravens had a 28-13 lead at halftime in what was one of the Games of the Year, and Jackson turned it into an absolute rout.

There was this huge throw to Odell Beckham Jr., who went all old-school with one of his historically ridiculous catches…

…this 75-yard touchdown pass to Zay Flowers…

…and this amazing throw to Isaiah Likely on fourth-and-7 that went for a 35-yard touchdown.

Someday, people might understand that Lamar Jackson is as much of a quarterback as any other great quarterback in the NFL. Or, those who dispute that notion will continue to prove that they don’t watch football. In any event, Jackson is forwarding the momentum for his second Most Valuable Player award.

Not bad for a receiver, right?

Ravens defenders Brandon Stephens, Kyle Hamilton are questionable for matchup vs. Dolphins

Kyle Hamilton listed as questionable for Ravens matchup vs. Dolphins

Baltimore is set to match up with the NFL’s leading passing attack that’ll feature the NFL’s best wide receiver in Tyreek Hill, and they could be without three defenders in the secondary.

Safety Kyle Hamilton (knee) and cornerback Brandon Stephens (ankle) are both questionable to play, along with nickel Arthur Maulet (knee).

Hamilton has been a Swiss army knife in the Ravens’ defense this season, and Stephens has been the Ravens’ most consistent cornerback and started every game.

Hamilton didn’t practice Friday after being limited on Thursday. Stephens was added to the injury report on Thursday and was still out Friday.

Flowers missed two days of practice before taking part in Friday’s session on a limited basis. Flowers leads the Ravens with 74 catches for 752 yards and four touchdowns.

John Harbaugh says Ravens TE Mark Andrews is ‘on schedule’ when asked about postseason return

John Harbaugh says Ravens TE Mark Andrews is ‘on schedule’ when asked about postseason return

Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh gave an update on Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews while speaking with the media on Wednesday.

“I think [Mark Andrews] is on schedule as far as I’ve heard,” Harbaugh said.” [He’s] maybe a little ahead of schedule – I don’t know really if that’s accurate to say. But I’ve seen him in there working, and he’s in great spirits, and we’re hopeful. Our job is to get to that point. That’s what we have to do is get to the point where we’re still playing when he comes back, and it’s going to take everything we have.”

The Ravens have forged on to a league-best 12-3 record without their best pass-catcher since Andrews left the game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11. Second-year tight end Isaiah Likely has stepped up with an increased role as the team’s starting tight end, catching 17 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns in Andrews’ absence.

Andrews was spotted in the Ravens’ locker room last week for the first time since suffering his injury.

Andrews has been the go-to target for quarterback Lamar Jackson since the two entered the league together in 2018. Andrews still leads the team in receiving touchdowns with six despite not playing since Week 11.

Anatomy of a Play: How the Ravens beat the clock (and the 49ers) for a big touchdown

The Ravens and Lamar Jackson are getting things done on offense in some very unusual ways. Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar break it down in this week’s “Xs and Os.”

With 11:49 left in the third quarter of the Baltimore Ravens’ Monday night win over the San Francisco 49ers’ 33-19 Monday night win over the San Francisco 49ers, Lamar Jackson threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Zay Flowers. That in itself was not exceptional, but the ways in which the Ravens came to fool the 49ers’ top defense? Well, there was a lot to unpack there.

On the previous play, running back Gus Edwards was caught for a one-yard loss by edge-rusher Nick Bosa.

The Ravens rushed to get the next play off, and a different alignment caused a lot of confusion for the 49ers’ defense. Here, Baltimore had tight end Isaiah Likely outside of right tackle Morgan Moses, left tackle Ronnie Stanley outside Likely, Flowers outside Stanley, and receiver Nelson Agholor outside Flowers.

At the snap, Likely ran a rail route, while Agholor ran a stutter-post, and Flowers went right to the end zone unobstructed. You can see linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, two of the best in the business, getting confused and winding up in the same place. Warner was handing Flowers off — probably to safety Ji’Ayir Brown — but Brown had vacated his area to cover Likely. It’s unusual to get this many San Francisco defenders out of place at once, but the combination of an unbalanced formation and a hurry-up offense did the trick.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Todd Monken mentioned Jackson’s vision on off-script plays, and brought up the Flowers touchdown as an example.

“I do think that’s a strength of [Lamar Jackson’s]. I do think he sees the field very well. Take for instance … We’ll talk about the scrambles first. He does a tremendous job, and we’ve worked awfully hard with our scramble drills in terms of our spacing down the field reacting to the quarterback. But even beyond that, I think he’s able to communicate what he sees and what he anticipates. Then, when he gets outside the pocket, [he] does a great job of seeing things.

“The touchdown to Zay – more times than not on that, we’re trying to get the defense to move laterally, and we’re thinking outside post [route and] rail [route] to the back [of the end zone]. I don’t even know if we ever hit Zay one time on that part of it, but he saw the reaction of the safety and made an unbelievable play to be real honest.”

Well, there was more to it than that.

Those [plays] don’t just happen,” head coach John Harbaugh said after the game. “Those happen because a lot of hard work gets put into it on top of a lot of amazing talent. It’s a group effort. You have the offensive line doing their thing and then tight ends, [wide] receivers, and [running] backs, both in protection and in routes. They’re forced to cover guys downfield, and Lamar [Jackson] is able to run. [If] they don’t cover guys downfield, Lamar finds them. [Lamar] has great vision, and our guys are finding soft spots in the coverage there and getting open, and he hits them. Nobody throws better than Lamar on the move, from awkward platforms, he’s very accurate that way. So, all those things I would say came into play.”

Now, the Ravens face a Miami Dolphins defense that has jumped from 26th to sixth in DVOA since Week 10.

Miami defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is well aware of the challenge, especially when it comes to Jackson’s combination of pocket efficiency and dynamism in unstructured moments.

“I mean, the pure definition of a great quarterback is there’s no one way to play him,” Fangio said this week. “Because if there was, everybody would do it. So you just have to mix up what you’re doing. Along the way, they have a hell of a run game. Both from the players ability – O-line, tight ends, runners – and the scheme of it with Lamar at the helm makes it a difficult task. There’s a lot to prepare for, a lot to defend in this offense.”

Especially if Monken starts messing with the clock again.

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys discuss this particular play, and get into why Baltimore’s offense is a real problem for any defense.
