Arkansas media legends Bob Holt and Mike Irwin elected to Hall of Fame

Bob Holt, Mike Irwin, Mike Nail and Chris Mortensen were elected to the Arkansas Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

If you’ve listened to an Arkansas press conference at any point over the last 40ish years, you’ve heard Bob Holt.

If you’ve watched local sports TV at any point over last 45ish years, you’ve seen Mike Irwin.

Holt, a Razorbacks reporter for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and Irwin, an analyst for Pig Trail Nation, were among four elected to the Arkansas Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame on Wednesday. They were joined by former Arkansas play-by-play man Mike Nail and Chris Mortensen, the long-time ESPN football reporter who is based in Northwest Arkansas.

Holt has spent his entire career covering the state of Arkansas. He began his sports career in 1981 and is known for his affable demeanor and interaction with players and coaches in post-game press conferences. He’s a godfather of sorts during SEC Media Week, when coaches from across the conference will interact with the long-time reporter.

Irwin’s career covering Arkansas began 46 years ago. He worked at KFSM until 2012 when he retired but then quickly re-joined the TV side to work at KNWA.

Nail was the play-by-play voice for Arkansas basketball during the Eddie Sutton and Nolan Richardson years. He spent 29 seasons calling the Hogs and, well, calling the Hogs.

Mortensen moved to Northwest Arkansas in the mid-2000s when his son, Alex, joined the Razorbacks football team. He has since made the area his home.

The group was enshrined during a Hawgs Illustrated luncheon at Mermaid’s restaurant in Fayetteville.

“Without you guys – the readers, the viewers – none of us could do what we do,” Holt said.

Erik Spoelstra: Pat Riley is on the Mount Rushmore of executives… he should be in the Hall of Fame as an executive too

More on this storyline

“Pat’s a visionary,” Spoelstra said. “He’s a force of nature. He has 50 years of experience in this league at the highest level. And has had as much success in this league as anyone. He has a blueprint, he has a way of making things happen, but he’s also adapted and adjusted. You don’t have this kind of success if you haven’t adapted over the years. I think that’s one of the things that gets overlooked a lot. He’s reinvented how we do it and how we put together teams, over and over and over, depending on the era.” -via ESPN / May 12, 2022
As you watch this season, are there any teams or players catching your attention? Julius Erving: Yeah, Memphis, man. I think Ja Morant is going to be a future Hall of Famer. He can easily be a Hall of Famer and maybe even an MVP. I think he’s in the discussion already. You have Nikola Jokic. You’ve got Joel in there. Luka Doncic. You have Giannis. You have Ja. Those are my top five guys right now in terms of the things required to be an MVP. Steph Curry was there before he got hurt. Then there is Devin Booker. Don’t forget Devin Booker! Don’t sleep on him because his team has the best record in the league, and part of the criteria is team success. -via For The Win / April 8, 2022

This seems like a good time to repost an exclusive I had with @Chris Paul at the top of the season. Even though he’s a HOF-er, he told me that before games, he still imagines that he’s a rookie about to go up against Steve Nash.

Randy Gradishar’s Hall of Fame chances have improved thanks to revised process

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced a significant change that could help Randy Gradishar’s chances of getting in.

When it comes to the Denver Broncos and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, arguments often erupt as to who should be the next orange-and-blue-wearing warrior to receive a gold jacket.

One name that is consistently brought to mind as a fan favorite is “Orange Crush” leader, linebacker Randy Gradishar. Every single player with similar statistical careers as Gradishar already holds a pedestal in the Hall of Fame gallery in Canton, Ohio. Yet, Gradishar has continued to fall short of the required votes needed for a bronze bust.

Last week, the Hall of Fame announced a significant change, one that could alter the fate of Gradishar’s consideration: instead of two senior members that have been selected, (one player and one contributor), there will now be three names up for Hall of Fame contention in the ‘senior’ category for the next three years.

“Members of the selection committee have made it clear they wanted to get more seniors ‘in the room’ for discussion,” Hall of Fame president Jim Porter said, via Clark Judge of Sports Illustrated. “[T]he team at the Hall of Fame… worked with the board to create a path for those committee discussions that could lead to possible enshrinement for more seniors.”

This does not mean that three players will always be selected for enshrinement. Three is the maximum number that could be enshrined during this short period of time.

However, this change is a brighter ray of hope to right wrongs for players across the NFL who often waited dutifully for several years to hear a ‘knock’ that never came.

A knock that could soon become available for one of Denver’s most recognized and most beloved names in franchise history.

Don’t sleep on him because his team has the best record in the league, and part of the criteria is team success.
