Lions vs. Packers: What I learned from film review of Detroit’s Thanksgiving loss

Takeaways from the film study of the Lions’ Thanksgiving loss to the Packers, a game Detroit lost from the very first play

Thanksgiving was a tough football meal to digest for the Detroit Lions. Losing 29-22 in Ford Field to the Green Bay Packers in a turkey of a game ruined the holiday buzz.

I delayed this week’s film study and lessons learned from it a little to make sure the bad taste of the loss was out of my mouth and not overly clouding my judgment. It turns out that the leftover helping of All-22 didn’t make it taste any better. In fact, I feel even worse about the way the Lions played now after studying it more.

Here’s what I took away from the film study of the Lions’ Thanksgiving loss to the Packers.

Poll: What worries you most about the Lions for the rest of the season?

Vote inside for what worries you the most about the Lions for the rest of the season

The Detroit Lions will end Week 12 with an 8-3 record, good enough for a least a two-game lead in the NFC North division. But after Thursday’s uninspiring home loss to the Green Bay Packers, on the heels of an ugly win over the last-place Chicago Bears, the buzz on the Lions is fading a bit.

There are any number of factors in the recent downtick in play. From getting two sacks in the last three games to Jared Goff committing six turnovers in the last two, to the flat starts and more predictable play-calling, the Lions have lost the edge that led to them being national darlings.

Lions vs. Packers Week 18 inactive players: Penei Sewell OUT

Jared Goff will start at QB for Detroit but RT Penei Sewell is out for Week 18

Fans hoping for a 2020 Green Bay Packers backup QB grudge match in the 2021 finale will be disappointed. There will be no Tim Boyle vs. Jordan Love matchup in Detroit in Week 18.

The Lions will roll with regular starter Jared Goff back at the helm after missing the last two weeks. Goff was officially questionable with a knee injury but will start. Boyle will back him up.

Love returned from COVID-19 protocols in time to play, but the Packers have opted to start MVP candidate Aaron Rodgers regardless. There is a chance both Love and Boyle, who battled to back up Rodgers in 2020 in Green Bay (Boyle won the gig), could play but they will not be the QBs of record for the season finale.

Goff will be without his regular right tackle. Rookie Penei Sewell is inactive despite being activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. Dan Skipper, elevated from the practice squad, is also inactive.

Lions vs. Packers final injury report for Week 18

Lions vs. Packers final injury report for Week 18 includes one player out and 6 questionable for Detroit

The final Detroit Lions injury report for the 2021 season reveals a team whose remaining players are in relatively good health. Only one player, fullback Jason Cabinda, is officially ruled out with a knee injury other.

Six other Lions are questionable, a grouping that includes starting QB Jared Goff and left guard Jonah Jackson. Goff is officially listed as questionable, but earlier on Friday head coach Dan Campbell called Goff “probable” to play with his lingering knee injury.

Joining Goff and Jackson (elbow/knee) as questionable for Sunday’s meeting with Green Bay in Ford Field:

  • DE Michael Brockers (neck)
  • LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin (shoulder)
  • WR Josh Reynolds (thigh)
  • TE Brock Wright (groin)

Detroit’s injury report does not include the players who remain on the reserve/COVID-19 list, a group that includes both starting offensive tackles, Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker. They will be eligible to play on Sunday if they become asymptomatic and produce a negative test to clear protocols.

When will the Lions win? Breaking down the remaining schedule

Breaking down the remaining Detroit Lions schedule and the chances for victory against each opponent

There are just six games left for the Detroit Lions to avoid the ignominy of another winless season. Now 0-10-1 after losing a winnable game against the visiting Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving, it’s getting very late in the year to try and break the seal on the win column.

It’s not going to be easy. The Lions will not be favored in any of their remaining six matchups. The teams on the schedule have a combined record of 37-29 and all but one are within a game of a postseason berth.

Here is how the Lions schedule looks for the rest of the season and their chances of winning each game.

Aaron Rodgers, Packers congratulated Marvin Jones for his great catch that was mistakenly ruled incomplete

It was plainly obvious to everyone but the replay official that Jones got both feet down

Marvin Jones knows he caught it. Anyone watching the broadcast of the game knows Marvin Jones caught it. It turns out the Green Bay Packers all know Jones did indeed make the spectacular toe-tap catch in Sunday’s loss to the Packers.

The only people who didn’t believe it are the replay officials for the game. Sadly, their mistaken opinion is the only one that matters.

Jones and coach Darrell Bevell were mic’d up for the game, and the Lions released the video of the mic’d up experience on Wednesday. And it’s abundantly clear to everyone that Jones caught the ball.

The reactions captured on video tell it all.

The play with the catch begins at the 6:00 mark of the video provided via the Lions’ YouTube channel. The discussion with the officials is also included after the catch.

At the end of the video, which captures the end of the game, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver Davante Adams and head coach Matt Lafleur all approach Jones and congratulate him for his “hell of a catch”, in Rodgers words. They all were dismayed that it was not ruled a catch.

That has been the pervasive theme across all media platforms. From the NFL Network to Pro Football Talk, from Sirius XM NFL Radio to 670 AM The Score in Chicago, it’s almost universal that Jones made the great catch cleanly and inbounds. The NFL has yet to comment.

Matthew Stafford injures ribs, forced to leave game vs. Packers

Stafford was replaced by Chase Daniel

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered a rib injury in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Stafford was injured after a slide where he got twisted between two Packers defenders near the Green Bay end zone. He instantly clutched at his lower ribs on the left side and had his head down in obvious pain.

Stafford stayed in the game for the next play, a Kerryon Johnson touchdown run. After a trip to the locker room with trainers, Stafford reemerged and worked with the staff on the sidelines. He was ruled questionable by the Lions but Chase Daniel took over for the Lions on the next offensive possession.
