Florida Football 2024 Position Preview: Quarterbacks

Graham Mertz is set to lead Florida’s quarterback room for another year, but true freshman DJ Lagway should get some snaps as well.

Gators Wire’s annual position preview series begins with the most important position on the field: quarterback.

The Florida Gators have a clear hierarchy under center heading into 2024. Redshirt senior [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] will start for a second-straight season in Gainesville, with former five-star recruit and true freshman [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] hungry for snaps behind him.

Over the offseason, head coach Billy Napier implied that Lagway would be used more than a typical first-year player, and reports are good coming out of fall camp. Some fans are hoping for a Chris Leak-Tim Tebow dynamic, but Mertz is still the man in charge of the position room right now.

* = while playing for Wisconsin

Graham Mertz enters his second year as Florida’s starter with much more confidence than he did in 2023. Mertz’s developed a reputation of inconsistency at Wisconsin, his biggest offense being double-digit interceptions in back-to-back seasons.

Mertz quieted those turnover concerns by completing 73% of his attempts with the Gators and throwing just three interceptions. The goal this year is to cement himself a spot in the draft class, and a repeat performance could do just that.

The biggest question mark in Mertz’s game is the ability to throw the ball deep. Napier rarely called on Mertz to heave the ball beyond 20 yards downfield, and that’s for a reason. Adding a consistent deep ball to his game could elevate Mertz to where he wants to be.

“Graham’s great. He’s phenomenal,” Napier said. “He’s just got a great energy about himself. It affects other people in a positive way. Extremely detailed, a great note taker, great in the unit meetings, great in the position meetings. He’s a pro.”

Backup: No. 2 DJ Lagway (Fr.)

Matt Pendleton/Gainesville Sun

Make no mistake, DJ Lagway is the quarterback of the future in Gainesville, but he’ll have to pay his dues before taking over the starting reigns at Florida.

Freshmen quarterbacks are among the most volatile players in the sport, and easing them into the college level is typically preferred. But Lagway is the kind of former five-star who deserves immediate playing time, and the fans are going to get louder if he doesn’t see the field.

Lagway has a cannon for an arm and scrambling ability, which separates him from Mertz.

Napier has already admitted that the Gators will have packages and plays drawn up for Lagway throughout the season, but the exact split of snaps remains to be seen.

“Just overall comfort level with the system,” Napier said of Lagway after the team’s first scrimmage. “I had a conversation with him the other day coming off after practice one, and you say ‘I know that wasn’t perfect, the (first) practice day is never perfect, but just think about where you’re at now compared to where you were at after spring number one.’”

Reserve: No. 18 Clay Millen (R-Jr.)

[autotag]Clay Millen[/autotag] transferred from Colorado State — he spent his freshman year at Nevada — and joined the Gators during the spring semester. Billy Napier likes to have at least five quarterbacks on his roster and needed a third scholarship player in the position room.

A veteran from a respected program like Colorado State is the right kind of addition for an SEC team looking for depth, but Millen shouldn’t see the field unless it’s a blowout or injuries occur.

Walk-Ons: No. 12 Paul Kessler (Fr.), No. 16 Aidan Warner (R-Fr.) and No. 26 Lawrence Wright IV (Fr.)

[autotag]Paul Kessler[/autotag] joined the team in the spring as a preferred walk-on after one season at Santa Monica College.

[autotag]Aidan Warner[/autotag] redshirted at Yale in 2023 and walked on at Florida in the spring. He played prep ball in the Orlando area at Winter Park High School.

[autotag]Lawrence Wright IV[/autotag] is the final walk-on quarterback in the position room. He joined the Gators over the summer.

None of these three should see the field, but depth is a necessity at this level, especially for practice.

Florida’s starting quarterback named to Manning Award Watch List

Florida Gators starting quarterback Graham Mertz adds another preseason watch list to his collection.

Florida football redshirt senior quarterback Graham Mertz was awarded a spot on the 2024 Manning Award Preseason Watch List on Wednesday.

Mertz had a great 2023 season, throwing for 2,903 yards, 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions at a 72.9% completion rate. He now joins another national watch list as he looks to have a terrific 2024 season.

Mertz was previously named to the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback, the Maxwell Award watch list and the Allstate Danny Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, college football’s top award for community service.

The Manning Award has been presented each year since 2004 and awards the country’s best collegiate quarterback judged by the Sugar Bowl Committee. It is also the only quarterback award that includes the player’s postseason performance in its balloting.

Tim Tebow is the lone Gator to win this prestigious award back in 2008.

More on the Manning Award

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, honoring Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. In college, they combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards.

The winner will be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the postseason.

Florida’s season opener for 2024

The Florida Gators and No. 19 Miami Hurricanes square off on Aug. 31 in Gainesville, Florida to open their schedule for the 2024 season. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ABC Sports.

What if Florida played in a 16-game showdown between SEC and Big Ten?

The Athletic has the Gators facing the Golden Gophers in a 16-team SEC vs Big Ten face-off.

The past several years have seen an unprecedented number of changes in the college football landscape, with the Football Bowl Subdivision’s top conferences expanding to levels that border on super-conferences.

The most recent shift coming into the 2024 season has created a pair of behemoths — the Southeastern Conference now with 16 teams and the Big Ten with 18  — that include a majority of the nation’s top programs.

With this in mind, The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Seth Emerson responded to a mailbag question that pondered the outcome of a basketball-like SEC-Big Ten challenge series.

In such a scenario, the two leagues would line up the matchups based on intraconference ranking, with 16 teams playing against their respectively-ranked opponent — which means the bottom two ranked teams in the Big Ten would be omitted. All apologies to the Indiana Hoosiers and Purdue Boilermakers.

Where Florida football fits in

The Florida Gators are ranked No. 12 among their SEC peers, which matches them up with the Minnesota Golden Gophers for this thought exercise. Based on the authors’ outline for the series, the two teams would face off in Ames, Iowa.

“The closest power-conference campus to Dinkytown is Iowa State, which is also the site of [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s biggest win as Louisiana’s coach.”

Dochterman’s take

“In three games against the Gophers while at Wisconsin, Florida quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] never threw a touchdown and suffered a concussion in the only meeting the Badgers won. That unfortunate trend extends to this matchup for the Gators.

“Plus, the Gophers have the best little-known receiver in the country in Daniel Jackson.”

Dochterman predicts that Minnesota would prevail over Florida, 34-24.

Emerson’s take

“I spent some time around the Gophers this offseason and like the potential for immediate chemistry under new quarterback Max Brosmer. But the Gators will be improved this year; it’s just that their SEC schedule will make it hard to show that improvement in the standings.

“On a somewhat neutral site, their talent should win out.”

Emerson predicts that Florida would sneak by Minnesota, 23-21.

Overall results

According to Dochterman’s final tally, the SEC and Big Ten would finish the series knotted up at an even 8-8 record. However, Emerson favors the SEC with a 10-6 record which bodes much better for the Gators and their fellow conference brethren.

Florida’s starting QB named to Wuerffel Trophy Preseason Watch List

Graham Mertz has excelled on the field for the Florida Gators, but he has also done a lot off the field during his short time in Gainesville.

The 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list was announced on Thursday with redshirt senior and incumbent Florida football quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] included among the names.

The honor is awarded annually to the FBS player who best embodies the spirit of service and humanitarianism of former Gators quarterback [autotag]Danny Wuerffel[/autotag], who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service.

Mertz has participated in a handful of service events with local organizations and charities during his short time in Gainesville. He has donated his time to Habitat for Humanity, Bread of the Almighty, Ronald McDonald House, Food4Kids Backpack Program, and North Central Florida YMCA — as well as multiple elementary schools in Alachua County — in less than two years in town.

The only member of the Orange and Blue to have ever earned the honor is Gators legend [autotag]Tim Tebow[/autotag], who was awarded in 2008.

Danny Wurffel’s announcement

“I am deeply honored to see such outstanding individuals nominated for this year’s Allstate Wuerffel Trophy,” said Wuerffel.

“Their commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in their communities is truly inspiring. Throughout my life and career, I have always believed in the importance of putting others before yourself and striving to make a difference. These nominees exemplify those values, and I am proud to celebrate their dedication to humanitarian efforts and selfless service.”

More on the Wuerffel Trophy

The 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipients will be selected by an illustrious national voting committee, including a fan vote component, and announced on ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec.12.  The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Presentation Gala will take place Feb. 1, 2025, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Florida’s incumbent starting QB named to Maxwell Award Watch List

The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list and included Florida’s Graham Mertz among the 80 honorees.

The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list on Monday for the 88th Maxwell Award presented annually to the outstanding player in college football. This year, Florida Gators incumbent starting quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] was among the 80 student-athletes — and 15 from the Southeastern Conference — named to the list.

The Maxwell Award is presented to the best player in college football and has been given to the College Player of the Year since 1937. It is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell — a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.

Johnny Lattner (1952, 1953) and Gator great [autotag]Tim Tebow[/autotag] (2007, 2008) are the only players to have won the award twice.

5 most underrated QBs in college football ahead of the 2024 season

Looking into five of the nation’s most underrated quarterbacks ahead of the 2024 season, from Garrett Greene to Jalon Daniels

There’s plenty of talk about Carson Beck, Shedeur Sanders and Quinn Ewers with the 2024 season just on the horizon, but they aren’t the only quarterbacks to keep an eye on this fall.

Despite not being heralded nearly as highly as last year’s crop of quarterbacks, there are still several names who could develop into something special, including many who have flown under the radar.

Here’s a look into the five most underrated quarterbacks in college football with the season just around the corner:

1. Garrett Greene, WVU

In terms of quarterbacks who don’t get enough credit for the amount of value they bring to their team, Garrett Greene may be the most overlooked, underrated quarterback of them all nationally.

According to Pro Football Focus, Greene led the FBS in big-time throws  (10.2%), something that is not surprising given how he’s made the most of his opportunities in pivotal moments, even under pressure.

In addition to what he’s able to do as a passer, Greene’s improvisation ability and mobility play a large role into how truly dynamic of a football player he really is.

Greene finished out the 2023 season with a 52.9% completion rate, passing for 2,406 yards with 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 772 yards and 13 touchdowns.

His 91.0 overall PFF grade last season tied him for the sixth-highest graded quarterback among Power Five passers, right there with Heisman Trophy finalist Michael Penix Jr.

2. Brady Cook, Missouri

Cook had his ups and downs early on as the starter, but he developed over time and has quietly become one of the nation’s best quarterbacks and a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.

He put together the best season of his career with a top-10 team in 2023, connecting on 66.1% of his passes for 3,317 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in 2023, adding 319 rushing yards and 8 scores on the ground. When looking purely at the stat sheet, it’s important to note all of Cook’s interceptions came in the first seven games of the season and that he greatly improved in the area as time went on.

Heading into the 2024 season, Cook has made clear he and the Tigers have the lofty expectations of making it to the national championship, though that’s going to mean having to push aside the fortress that is the Georgia Bulldogs.

Cook could very well use this season as an opportunity to send his draft stock  into the stars as he’s already impressed with his abilities both from the pocket and when called upon to use his legs, ball placement and speed of release.

3. Graham Mertz, Florida

There was a time Graham Mertz was looked upon as one of the lower-tier quarterbacks of college football, but those days are over after Mertz burst onto the SEC scene

Mertz completed 72.9% of his passes for 2,903 yards with 20 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 2023, putting up much-improved numbers individually behind a subpar offensive line. On the ground, he rushed for 4 scores.

The former Wisconsin quarterback’s 80.2% adjusted completion rate is the second-highest among returning Power 4 conference quarterbacks. In addition to how he’s been commended for who he is as a communicator from an intangibles perspective, Mertz has also impressed with the way he’s able to work off-platform, the situational awareness he has and rarely putting the ball in harm’s way (as his stellar touchdown-to-interception ratio from 2023 would suggest).

If Mertz can build upon the new foundation he set at Florida last year heading into the 2024 season, he could quickly fly up the draft boards.

4. Jalon Daniels, Kansas

Daniels has flashed several times, catching some national attention, but the chief question is as to whether or not he can remain healthy long enough to remain in the spotlight. The veteran signal-caller saw action in just three games last season and has yet to put together a 10-game season in his college career.

2022 was his best season, when he completed 66.1% of his passes for 2,014 yards with 18 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Daniels saw the field for three games in 2023, completing 74.7% of his passing attempts for 705 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also rushed for 74 yards.

It’s easy to get the sense Daniels could be one of college football’s most electric players if he can stay on the field with the true dual-threat presence he brings between the way he’s continuously improved as a pure pocket passer and the pure speed he has on the ground.

5. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

It’s coming time to give the gunslinger a bit more credit. He’s patiently waited his turn and could show to be the quarterback who had the highest ceiling in the Tigers’ room of signal-callers after all dependent upon how he grows in 2024.

Nussmeier has never lacked confidence in himself, comparing himself to one of college football’s greatest quarterbacks in recent history as just a recruit.

“I think I bring a very Joe Burrow-like mind to the table for LSU,” Nussmeier told me in 2020 before officially committing to LSU. “I see a lot of similarities in the way we play. I’d like to think that we think the same. I know that’s saying a lot. He did an unbelievable job. I’d like to think that I can learn and get to the point to do things the way he did.”

Over six appearances during the 2023 season, Nussmeier completed 61.5% of his passes for 591 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. There’s no question that he’s got superior arm strength in his toolbox, but he also seems to be improving in decision-making from the pocket and has proven his ability to come in clutch.

In his only start at LSU, the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl, Nussmeier led the Tigers on a late fourth quarter touchdown drive to beat Wisconsin, 35-31, passing for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nussmeier was named the MVP for his efforts, with his 31 completions and 395 passing yards against the Badgers ranking as the most in LSU history for a quarterback making his first start.

Former Wisconsin quarterback included in 2024 Maxwell Award watch list

Former Wisconsin quarterback included in 2024 Maxwell Award watch list

Former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz was included in the 2024 Maxwell Award watch list on Monday.

The honor recognizes the most outstanding player in college football each year. A panel of media members and NCAA head coaches deliberate on the winner — who is given the honor during the ESPN Home Depot College Awards Show in December.

Other notable quarterbacks to join Mertz as a nominee on the watch list included Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Georgia’s Carson Beck, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Missouri’s Brady Cook, Penn State’s Drew Allar and Texas’ Quinn Ewers.

Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. pocketed the honor in 2023 after USC’s Caleb Williams took it home in 2022. A quarterback has won the Maxwell Award in seven of the last eight college football seasons.

Mertz, who started 32 games quarterback for the Badgers from 2020-22, enters his second season at the helm with the Florida Gators after registering 2,903 yards and 20 touchdowns a season ago.

Even though the Gators went 5-7 in 2023, Mertz could make some national noise is games against Texas, LSU, Georgia and Florida State in a loaded SEC conference.

If the Gators, spearheaded by Mertz under center, could orchestrate a few upset victories, his stock would surely rise in regard to this type of recognition.

Graham Mertz takes a dip in 247Sports’ SEC quarterback rankings

Graham Mertz’s return to Florida was a big decision, but experts view him as a borderline top-10 quarterback in the SEC heading into the fall.

Florida quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] fell three spots to No. 10 in the most recent SEC quarterback rankings from 247Sports.

Mertz’s drop is less about him and more about first-year quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag], a five-star recruit out of high school. On national signing day, head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] mentioned that Florida would find time to get Lagway into games early on, but the feeling is that he’ll get more snaps than initially expected after the SEC media days.

“A healthy share of Graham Mertz’s playing time this season could be gobbled up by five-star freshman DJ Lagway,” college football analyst Brad Crawford said. “… Billy Napier helped Mertz develop into a formidable signal caller who’s coming off a 20-touchdown season. Napier said in Dallas that the Gators’ most critical offseason personnel decision was Mertz deciding to give it another go in Gainesville. It’s clear, however, Lagway is the future and he’s going to play a bunch this fall in the QB2 role.”

Mertz is looking to make an NFL draft push, but Napier is going to play the best quarterback for the team in a season where Florida faces the toughest schedule in the country.

LSU‘s Garrett Nussmeier, Texas A&M Conner Weigman and Oklahoma‘s Jackson Arnold all passed Mertz in the Nos. 7-10 spots, respectively.

Here’s where Florida ranks in post-SEC media days rankings

The Orange and Blue have a lot to prove this fall.

The 2024 edition of SEC media days is in the books after each of the 16 schools in the expanded conference took their turns at the podium in Dallas, Texas.

Head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] — along with linebacker [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag], running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. and quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] — represented the Gators at the annual event and shared their thoughts with the press on Wednesday. While they all spoke optimistically about the program, the fact remains that Gainesville has not seen a winning season in three years.

Subsequently, the Orange and Blue found itself ranked No. 12 in the Southeastern Conference media poll following the week’s festivities.

Florida Gators HC calls former Wisconsin QB ‘one of the best in America’

Do you agree with Billy Napier’s thoughts on Graham Mertz?

Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier called former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Graham Mertz “one of the best quarterbacks in America” at SEC media days this week.

Mertz is entering his second year with the Gators after spending the first four years of his college career at Wisconsin. Badgers fans have tracked his career and progress closer than anybody after he initially joined the program as its highest-rated quarterback recruit of all time. That interest is only heightened with Napier making a comment like this.

Related: Reasons why Wisconsin football will or won’t make College Football Playoff in 2024

The veteran quarterback’s first year at Florida included a 72.9 completion percentage, 2,903 yards, 20 touchdowns and three interceptions. The stats are impressive, though they came as the Gators went 5-7 and missed a bowl game.

2024 does not project to get much easier for Mertz and Napier’s team. Florida plays a brutal schedule that includes games against Miami, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Ole Miss and Florida State. It would do well to win six games, let alone come anywhere near the expanded College Football Playoff.

But that dynamic exists with Mertz having turned some heads last season. There appears to be optimism, whether universal or not, that he can play like one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC.

Wisconsin fans who watched him complete just 59.5% of his passes for 6.5 adjusted yards per attempt, 38 touchdowns and 26 interceptions during his time in Madison may disagree with that sentiment.

The beauty of this situation and all others involving the sport: The games will kick off in five weeks and a clear answer will be given on the field.
