Why Gonzaga Will Win

You don’t come into the gym without planning on scoring at least 80 against Gonzaga, and you might need a plan to figure out how to hang 100 to have any hope.

The Bulldogs have taken their offensive up a few notches with well over 100 points in four of their last seven games, and with 89 or more in eight of their last nine.

One of those big scoring days was the 110 put up on BYU – 84 wasn’t enough to even get an appetizer.

BYU doesn’t force enough defensive stops, it fouls like it’s fun, and it’s having a big problem with turnovers lately.

And it just doesn’t score enough to keep up if and when Gonzaga goes Gonzaga.

Why BYU Will Win

As versatile as Gonzaga might be, it was able to win the first time around by going gonzo from three. It can get hot, but even Gonzaga isn’t going to hit 53% from three and nail close to 70% from the field again.

BYU can rebound well enough to clean up the glass on both ends. It’s not like Gonzaga can’t own the boards from time to time – it’ll get 40 coming off the bus – but BYU leads the nation in total rebounds and should be able to come up with more than the 11 offensive boards it generated the first time around.

What’s Going To Happen

Will it matter that BYU is playing in the Marriott?

It lost a clunker of a home game a few days ago to San Francisco for the first time all year it dropped a game in Provo. It was 10-0 before that at home, and now it gets the No. 1 team in its house.

There’s enough defense and production on the boards to keep this from getting too obnoxiously out of hand, but the co-No. 1 team in America is in way too good of a groove.

It’s too amazing from three lately to lose this, but BYU will make it fun for a while.

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougars are rocking and rolling ever since the 82-71 loss to Gonzaga in early February. They won five straight including an 82-77 WCC Tournament game over Pepperdine.

The Cougars continue to be among the best in the nation on the defensive boards, they’ve been lights out from the field, and they’ve been on from the free throw line.

It’s a versatile enough team to get into a shootout, it can grind it down, and again, it can and will rebound everything, but …

Why Gonzaga Will Win

Gonzaga has been held the Cougars to just 29 rebounds in the last meeting and had no problems in either win – even though the victory a month ago was a bit more of a fight.

The Bulldogs continue to crush and kill everything in their path, putting games away before halftime. They were up 44-26 on Saint Mary’s in the first round by doing what they do – rebound, get on the move, score easily.

BYU doesn’t apply or create enough defensive pressure to bother the Gonzaga backcourt.

BYU has the right makeup to hang around for a while. It’s great from three, it’s better at coming up with the rebound off the misses, and …

Gonzaga continues to play at a whole other level.

The Bulldogs might not be up by double-digits at halftime like normal, but it’ll turn on with one quick burst just when it seems like BYU is about to make this interesting.

The Cougars will turn it over a few times, Gonzaga will convert and move on.

Why Gonzaga Will Win

Even when the team doesn’t play well it ends up winning in blowouts.

It struggled against Pacific, it was in a fight early on, and … 76-58.

The Bulldogs continue to be devastating from the field – hitting half of their shots or more in ever game but three and have yet to be under 49% – by being able to pass better than just about anyone else, they’re great from the free-throw line, and now they’re going against a BYU team that doesn’t force a whole lot of mistakes.

BYU can score, too.

The Cougars aren’t that great from three – forgetting that they just hit everything in a win over Portland – but they’re fantastic at generating points coming off their ability to rebound.

They can move the ball around well to generate the right shot, they’re good enough on the line, and they have the exact type of team and style that should be able to hold up in a scoring fight against this Gonzaga juggernaut attack. But …

What’s Going To Happen

We did this back in early January, and it wasn’t all that pretty.

The Gonzaga offense went all Gonzaga offense in a 86-69 win, partly by outrebounding the rebounding team.

The D stopped everything from three, and that will likely be the issue again.

Again, the Cougars can score in a variety of ways and they’re great on the move and inside, but they’re going to misfire too much from the outside and they’ll blink in the second half to pull off the upset in a fun game that will slip away in the final minute.

Why Gonzaga Will Win

It wasn’t pretty a month ago.

It was a battle for about a half, and then it was all Bulldogs in the second in a 92-69 blasting of BYU.

They’re deadly from the field, hitting 50% or better in eight of their last ten games, and haven’t dipped below 40% since mid-November.

BYU is happy to get into shootouts, but it doesn’t defend on the inside like Gonzaga does, and it doesn’t do enough to slow teams from hitting from the outside.

The Zags have to get this game to the free throw line. They’re not great there, but they shoot a whole lot of them. BYU doesn’t get to the line, and it’s just okay when it does.

Why BYU Will Win

This is the one team that can stand toe-to-toe with the nation’s best scoring attack and hold its own.

It leads the nation at hitting the three – connecting on an amazing 50% or better in ten of the last 13 games – and hasn’t been below 40% since losing to Saint Mary’s in early January.

How is this happening? It’s moving the ball around better than just about anyone – BYU is second in the nation in assists – and it’s great at coming up with the open shot.

Gonzaga is active enough to close quickly – it hounded the BYU shooters in the first game and was -10 in assists –  but that game might have been an aberration, and now the battle is in Provo.

The Cougars hit just 30% from three in the first meeting. It was their second-worst outside shooting game since losing to Kansas back in late November.

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready to have some fun. These two will trade home run shots all game long with a whole lot of energy an big scoring runs.

Both teams will hit from three, and both will keep the mistakes to a minimum in a relatively clean game. However, Gonzaga will be better on the boards in the second half.

BYU will hit a bulk of its shots, but not all of them. The Bulldogs will clean up the rest, while on the other end, coming up with just enough second chance points to survive.
