Warriors Stephen Curry speaks on the passing of NBA legend Kobe Bryant

For the first time since his death, Stephen Curry spoke on the passing of NBA legend, Kobe Bryant.

It’s been a handful of days since a fatal helicopter crash claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others, yet the news is still rippling throughout the NBA world.

In days since Bryant’s tragic death, players and teams have been doing what they can to honor his legacy. Several players from the Warriors have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the passing of Bryant. Draymond Green, D’Angelo Russell and Stephen Curry have all posted emotional messages reacting to Bryant’s sudden death.

In the Warriors’ first game since the loss of Bryant, both the 76ers and Golden State paid tribute by starting the game with an eight and 24-second violation. Against the Warriors, 76ers center, Joel Embiid wore Bryant’s No. 24 instead of his No. 21.

Following the Warriors game in Bryant’s hometown of Philadelphia, swingman, Alec Burks changed his No. 8 jersey to No. 20 with respect to Bryant.

During the Warriors matchup with the Boston Celtics, Curry had a courtside interview with TNT reporter, Allie LaForce, and was asked about Bryant. Before getting to basketball, Curry spoke about Bryant, the father.

There’s not a lot that you can say about how much Kobe meant on and off the floor — Then you see the pouring of videos and just the way he embraced his kids every chance he could, the way he shared his career and love with each every single one of them — I mean, honestly, this whole situation sucks — You pray for the family through this whole process that they feel comfort and support the best that they can — It hurts, as a father, knowing the hole that he’s not able to fill anymore, and, obviously, for Gigi, too — I know the whole NBA family and the whole world, really, has their back.

Curry told LaForce he “idolized” Bryant on the court when he was growing up.

That’s one of the toughest parts of the week, as I was coming up in the game he was a guy that we idolized — imitating his moves out on the court and anytime he was on TV, you wanted to watch and lock into what he was doing — he was always about greatness and you appreciate that so much.

Curry and the Warriors will have the chance to honor Bryant at Chase Center when they return to San Francisco on February 8 to host the Los Angeles Lakers.

Celtics take control early, win 115-97 vs. Dubs

While there were hints of another slow start plaguing the Boston Celtics at TD Garden against the Dubs, the team quickly adjusted, coming away with the 115-97 win.

The Boston Celtics came out looking a little flat against the league-worst Golden State Warriors, and looked like they might pay for it until the first quarter was nearly done.

With one of their trademark slow starts having its usual effects, Boston found itself leaning on veteran forward Gordon Hayward to stir the team’s offensive game to life.

Back-to-back buckets from guard Marcus Smart gave the Celtics a six-point lead in the first frame’s final moments, and the Dubs never got closer for the rest of the contest.

The Celtics saw big nights from forwards Gordon Hayward, who continued his stellar play of late with 25 points and 8 boards, and All-Star Jayson Tatum, who logged 20 points and 6 rebounds on the eve of the news the Duke product got his first-ever All-Star nod.

Shooting guard Jaylen Brown added 18 points and 7 boards, and Marcus Smart had 21 points and 6 assists off the bench while shooting 50 % from deep and overall.

Point guard D’Angelo Russell led the Warriors with 22 points, 5 assists and 3 steals, and reserve guard Alec Burks added 18 points, but the Dubs were out of their depth with so many key players still out injured.

The Boston Celtics next face the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, February 1st at TD Garden at 8:30pm ET.

All Star Update: First time Warriors without player in game since 2013

The 2020 All-Star team has been announced, and for the first time since 2013, the Golden State Warriors will not have a player represented in the game.

When the 2020 NBA All-Star Western Conference starters were announced last week, something was missing from the lineup — no representative from the Golden State Warriors for the first time since 2014.

Then, the 2020 NBA All-Star Western Conference reserves were announced for the game in Chicago; more bad news came for Golden State. For the first time since 2013, the Warriors will not be sending a player to the game.

The rise of the “Splash Brothers” era has sparked many accolades for the Golden State Warriors. Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, All-Star appearances, and, of course, five consecutive trips to the NBA finals that resulted in three-championship banners hanging in the Chase Center rafters.

In 2013, David Lee made the All-Star game as a reserve, but from 2014 on, Stephen Curry started in every game until 2020. Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green all represented the Warriors in the All-Star game during that span.

However, with injuries to both Curry and Thompson during the 2019-20 season, the accolades have faded, and the losses have piled up. When the Western Conference All-Star reserves were announced Thursday evening, the Golden State Warriors were left out.

NBA All-Star weekend will start in Chicago on Thursday, February 16, with things like the Rising Stars Challenge and the 3-Point Shootout events leading up to the game on Sunday, February 19.

Injury Report: Kevon Looney’s return could come soon for Warriors

Kevon Looney is practicing and could be returning to the Warriors’ lineup before they close out their five-game road trip.

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson have led all the headlines when it comes to the Golden State Warriors injury troubles, yet they’ve been without an impactful member of their frontcourt for 38 games as well.

After signing a three-year, $15 million deal over the offseason, Kevon Looney was slated to play a significant role for Golden State in the 2019-20 season. However, a mix of injuries has defined the first half of his season.

A neuropathic condition and an abdomen strain have kept Looney’s name on the injury report, but there’s a chance the big-man could be returning to Steve Kerr’s rotation shortly.

According to Conor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, Looney recently practiced fully, and the hope is he returns to the court soon.

Golden State is currently on a five-game road swing, that will take them up and down the east coast before returning to the Bay Area to host the Los Angeles Lakers. Looney was spotted getting up shots before the Warriors took the floor in Philadelphia on the first game of the trip.

Without Looney, Omari Spellman and Marquese Chriss have received a bulk of the frontcourt minutes since the trade of Willie Cauley-Stein. Looney’s injuries have also opened the door for the arrival of Serbian rookie, Alen Smailagic.

A bottom record in the standings and development of their younger bigs has taken the pressure off Golden State to rush back Looney on his recovery. Although Looney could be close to returning, the Warriors could be patient with him until he’s fully healthy.

Report: Jayson Tatum to play against Warriors on minutes restriction

Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will be back on the floor Thursday night against the Warriors

An All-Star hopeful, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will be back in action on Thursday.

According to Boston.com, Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Tatum will play against the Golden State Warriors, though he will be on a minutes restriction. Tatum has missed the past three games because of a groin injury he suffered against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 22.

The Celtics and Warriors will tip off in Boston at 8 p.m. EST.

This game will be Tatum’s first since the passing of Kobe Bryant, a mentor and friend who he looked up to. Tatum talked about what Bryant meant to him in the video shown below.

A third-year player out of Duke, Tatum is having his best season to date. He’s averaging a career-high 21.5 points per game and shooting 36.6% from the 3-point line.

As one of the Celtics’ top players, Tatum is the team’s second-leading scorer behind Kemba Walker. Tatum also ranks fifth in 3-point percentage.

With the All-Star game around the corner, the game’s reserves for both conferences will be announced Thursday on TNT before the night’s games. Tatum has a chance to be a first-time All-Star, and he’s deserving of a spot because of his breakout year.

Steve Kerr seeing improvement from Draymond Green and D’Angelo Russell

Steve Kerr says he’s seeing improvement between D’Angelo Russell and Draymond Green.

The common factor when it comes to the Golden State Warriors record sitting at the bottom of the Westen Conference is the injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Without the “Splash Brothers,” the rest of Golden State is in evaluation mode.

A big question mark for the 2019-20 season surrounded two former NBA All-Stars — how will Draymond Green and D’Angelo Russell work together? Each has dealt with nagging injuries, yet Steve Kerr is happy how they’ve improved together as his primary offensive ball-handlers.

We’ve seen improvement within the last few games to where they share the ball-handling responsibilities — ‘D-Lo’ gets off the ball some and Draymond handles, then we flip that — D-Lo will handle to the ball and Draymond will play a more traditional screening role — last night it was very effective.

Against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Warriors had a chance an upset bid on the back of Russell and Green. Russell netted 28 points, while Green only added nine points, but the duo combined for 19 assists. Green was only one board and one point away from registering a triple-double in Philly.

When it comes to Russell, Kerr is especially impressed with the way he’s able to find other Warriors, while still carrying the scoring load.

I think D’Angelo’s been really, really good — setting other guys up, also looking to score, creating offense for us — playing at a high level.

Over his past 10-games, Russell is averaging 27.6 points and 6.9 assists per game. In the Warriors win against the Orlando Magic, Russell dropped 26 points, adding a season-high 12 assists.

Throughout the remainder of the season, Green and Russell’s development as a duo will play a significant piece heading into free agency. How the two will fit as a unit next to Thompson and Curry will give Bob Myers an idea whom he can plug around the rest of the roster to get back into championship contention.

Prediction

Celtics 125, Warriors 104

Moneyline (ML)

The Celtics (-909) are favored heavily, but the moneyline can’t be a recommended play with a $10 wager on Boston winning outright returning a profit of just $1.10. The Warriors (+600) are never an advisable play.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CELTICS (-11.5, -125) have cashed in four of their past five games overall, and they’re also 4-1 ATS in the past five while working on one day of rest. On the flip side, the Warriors (+11.5, +105) have registered a solid 5-0 ATS mark in their past five road games against teams with a winning home record. They’re just 10-22-1 ATS in the previous 33 games following a cover. For some reason, the Dubs have long had a case of the Thursdays, going 7-19 ATS in the past 26 on this particular day of the week.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 221.5 (-106) is the way to go. The Over has cashed in four straight for the Dubs, while hitting the Over in four straight as underdogs, too. The Over is 6-1 in the past seven appearances on Thursdays.

For the C’s, while the Under has hit in four straight overall, the Over is 5-2 in their past seven games and 9-3 in their past 12 showings on Thursday.

Trade rumor rankings: Andre Drummond, Robert Covington, Kyle Kuzma and more

HoopsHype ranks the five players who have popped up the most in trade rumors over the past week, including Pistons big man Andre Drummond.

Trade scuttle slowed down over the weekend and early in the week for obvious, tragic reasons, but that doesn’t mean teams have stopped talking business entirely behind the scenes. And although Woj is cautioning fans that it might be a slow trade deadline, as there are a lack of big-name players being discussed on the market at the moment, that doesn’t mean we won’t see some action over the coming days. Judging by some of the players being discussed, some teams might pick up half-decent role players by the deadline, who will undoubtedly help them in the upcoming playoffs.

Below, HoopsHype ranks the five players who have popped up the most in rumors on the site’s Trade page over the past week.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

5. KYLE KUZMA

Despite all the scuttle that made it seem like Kyle Kuzma was all but gone from the Los Angeles Lakers, the most recent talk on the matter indicates that the team is now hoping to hold onto the floor-spacing big man in hopes he can develop some consistency playing off of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Here’s what Sports Illustrated reporter Chris Mannix wrote late last week (via SI):

“More importantly: Giving up on Kuzma this early isn’t something the Lakers should be interested in. Kuzma is just 24. He’s a proven NBA scorer. He’s experiencing a learning curve playing alongside James and Davis, but there simply is not enough evidence to declare the fit in L.A. a failure. Expect the Lakers to hold on to Kuzma in the hopes he develops into a reliable third scoring option this season—and beyond.”

Kuzma’s recent play, particularly when Davis missed time with a tailbone injury, probably also factored into Los Angeles’ decision. Prior to a completely stinker against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, Kuzma was averaging 17.2 points and 5.2 rebounds over a nine-game stretch in which the Lakers went 7-2.

Still on a rookie-scale contract, it would benefit Los Angeles greatly if Kuzma can develop into legitimate third option for their title-contending team.

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

4. ANDRE DRUMMOND

The closer we get to the deadline, the more it looks like the Detroit Pistons are going to be forced to hold onto Andre Drummond and either pay him this summer when he hits free agency or risk losing him for nothing.

According to reports from various outlets, Detroit’s demands – mostly the fact they really want a first-round pick for their All-Star big man – has forced the market to grind to a near-halt with regards to Drummond. And unless the Pistons get a little more lax on their ultimatums, they may be stuck with Drummond for the rest of the season.

The main teams who were reportedly after Drummond, the Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, all own the draft capital necessary to meet Detroit’s demands, even if they may not want to right now, so there’s a chance trade talks for the double-double machine and league’s leading rebounder open up again as we get closer to the Feb. 6 deadline.

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

3. DENNIS SMITH JR.

We don’t have word on any potential destinations for third-year guard Dennis Smith Jr., but we do know he probably doesn’t factor into the New York Knicks’ future plans as the 22-year-old has only played in three of the team’s last five games, all for under 15 minutes of action.

On the year, Smith is averaging a meager 5.0 points and 2.6 assists per game in 15.5 minutes, resembling nothing like the Russell Westbrook reimagining that many hyped him up to be as a prospect.

Even so, Smith is under contract for one more season after this one, at an extremely team-friendly price of $5.7 million, so teams could consider taking a cheap flyer on him if the Knicks do decide to move the young ball-handler.

To his credit, Smith is taking his demotion to the Knicks’ third string like a complete pro, telling New York City media:

“Everything happens for a reason, you know what I’m saying? It was already written, God’s plan, I just gotta execute my part, put my work in and everything will work out. It’s a business. I’m here, playing for the New York Knicks, that’s my job right now, so that’s what I’m focused on. You realized [last year] anything can happen, so you just gotta be the best version of yourself.”

Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

2. ALEC BURKS

The Golden State Warriors, arguably the worst team in basketball this season while possessing various cheap-but-productive veterans, are obvious sellers ahead of the trade deadline.

That became even clearer when the team dealt big man Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks for a second-round pick.

28-year-old guard Alec Burks could get them even more in a potential trade, too, according to reports, which state that Golden State netting a late first-round pick for Burks is entirely possible. Makes sense, as Burks is a low-maintenance and productive option, one averaging a career-high 15.8 points to go with 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists on the year and earning $2.3 million.

The fact that Burks will be a free agent this summer should only make him more enticing to interested parties. Expect the Colorado product to get dealt over the coming days, it just makes too much sense.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

1. ROBERT COVINGTON

On the year, Robert Covington is averaging 12.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game while hitting nearly 35 percent of his three-point attempts, roughly enough to make him a viable threat when left open.

Covington’s game, that of a 3-and-D specialist who can cause major havoc defensively, has made him a hot trade commodity ahead of the deadline, especially because the Minnesota Timberwolves have played like one of the worst teams in the league recently. His team-friendly contract, which pays him on average $12.1 million over the next three seasons, also makes him a coveted trade target around the Association.

Some of the teams that have been mentioned as potential trade suitors for Covington include the Clippers, Lakers, Rockets, Sixers and Mavericks, all contenders with big aspirations this season who have the salaries and assets needed to entice the Timberwolves in theoretical trade talks.

At the same time, Minnesota knows what an excellent player – and asset – they have in Covington, so he won’t come cheap in a trade. Prying the 29-year-old swingman away from the Timberwolves won’t be easy.

Three Dubs-Celtics questions with Warriors Wire’s Tommy Call III

Ahead of the Boston Celtics’ second meeting of the 2019-20 NBA season with the Golden State Warriors, we caught up with Tommy Call III, editor of our sister site Warriors Wire to talk about the tilt.

Last time these two teams met, the Boston Celtics were without All-Star swingman Gordon Hayward, and the Golden State Warriors lost starting point guard D’Angelo Russell to injury before the game was over.

While the odds are still in Boston’s favor with so many key players on the Warriors still out injured, we caught up with Tommy Call III, editor-in-chief of our sister site, Warriors Wire, to get the lowdown on what’s gone on in the Bay area since the Celtics last crossed paths with the Dubs.

So, what’s changed since Golden State and Boston last met?

When the Celtics traveled to the new Chase Center in San Francisco early in the season, Willie Cauley-Stein was still the starting center for Golden State. Now with the Kentucky product in Dallas, the frontcourt keys have been given to Marquese Chriss and Omari Spellman. Each young big has thrived with the opportunity presented by Steve Kerr. Kerr has opted to start both at different times throughout January, with Chriss getting the call for the past two games.

While each brings a dose of energy to the Warriors frontcourt, both serve a different role on the floor from the same position. Chriss, an athletic lob threat, can be compelling inside with either D’Angelo Russell or Draymond Green initiating the offense. When Spellman is on the court, he can stretch the floor, shooting 47.8 % from beyond the arc in January, averaging 3.5 attempts per game in the month.

Encouraging play from both 22-year-old big-men has turned the rest of the 2019-20 season into an audition tape for each to fill an extended role next season when Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson return to the fold.

What it will take for each team to win?

Although the Golden State Warriors record sits at the bottom of the Western Conference, they’re a different team when Draymond Green is engaged. Without Curry and Thompson, plus an almost entirely new cast in Kerr’s rotation, Green has struggled with consistency. However, when Green can channel his former All-Star self, the Warriors’ lack of talent isn’t as apparent as their record might show.

In Golden State victories, Green is averaging 11.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game. Green’s netted a triple-double or close to one in four of the Warriors’ eight wins this season. Even in narrow defeat, Green has been a factor whether it’s hitting multiple 3-pointers, or being the primary ball-handler in Kerr’s offense.

Last game against the 76ers, Golden State, battled the more talented Philadelphia squad for three tight quarters, yet couldn’t close out the game in the final period — a big reason the game was close was due to Green’s 12 assists, nine points and nine rebounds.

Although the stats may not show it in the 2019-20 season, Green still has the ability to elevate Golden State’s surrounding talent to a new level when he’s engaged.

Is there anything else we should know about the matchup, or the Warriors more generally?

Since coming to Golden State, former Eastern Conference All-Star, D’Angelo Russell has been as advertised. Yet, in the Celtics previous matchup with the Warriors, the 23-year-old left the game with a thumb injury.

In his last 10-games, Russell is averaging 27.6 points and 6.8 assists per game with Golden State. The Louisville, Kentucky native is the key to Kerr’s offense, shooting 44.7 % from the field and 44.6 % from beyond the arc over his the last 10-games. Russell’s had three 30-point or more efforts in that span and only dipping under 26 points twice.

Russell is apart of a rare scoring breed in the NBA, when he’s on, he can take over an entire game regardless of the type of opponent in Golden State’s way.

The Warriors will continue to be without All-NBA point guard Steph Curry (wrist) and All-Star wing Klay Thompson (Achilles), but there’s a slim chance they could get a boost to their frontcourt rotation as center Kevon Looney is nearing return from a long absence due to abdominal injury.

Boston will be without centers Enes Kanter (knee) and Robert Williams III (hip), and could be without forward Jayson Tatum (groin). As bad as that may sound, it’s the healthiest the Celtics have been in some time, so it shouldn’t surprise if Tatum sits out a game.

Even with the thin frontcourt, the Celtics are still heavily favored against the league-worst Warriors, reflected in an average spread of -12 for Boston.
