League execs discuss D’Angelo Russell’s trade value, possible destinations

HoopsHype discusses D’Angelo Russell’s trade value and potential destinations with various NBA executives. We also look at the analytics.

As we approach the 2020 NBA trade deadline, one of the All-Star-level players who has been rumored about the most to this point has been Golden State Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell, who many expect to get dealt either by Thursday or, at the latest, over the offseason. It’s not because of his play that he’s a prime trade candidate, as the 23-year-old ball-handler is averaging 23.8 points and 6.3 assists per contest on 43.3/38.3/78.0 shooting splits, but rather simply because the Warriors project to have two All-NBA guards in their rotation next year, making Russell an expendable asset.

HoopsHype recently discussed Russell’s trade value and where he might end up with various league executives, and the responses varied quite a bit.

One Eastern Conference general manager told us: “D’Angelo Russell should be able to bring back a lot in a trade because you are getting a guy with cost certainty who’s under contract for three more years after this one and he’s still very young.”

Though age and contract certainly have to be factored in here, the fact that Russell is earning a max salary worth four years and $117.3 million might actually be a hindrance when it comes to moving him. As of now, Russell projects to be the 35th-highest paid player in basketball next season, but none of the catch-all advanced metrics, including Value Over Replacement Player (where he ranks 75th), Box Plus/Minus (55th) or Win Shares per 48 Minutes (146th!) have him producing at anywhere near that level this year.

Despite the advanced metrics, though, Russell is still held in high esteem around the Association, as one NBA executive told HoopsHype that he could see the Warriors netting multiple first-round picks in a deal for the five-year veteran while another said a Russell trade could return a player and a pick to Golden State.

That probably has to do with the fact that Russell is such an effective high-volume point producer, one who ranks as a “very good” scorer coming off of screens, in isolation and out of dribble hand-offs while producing “excellent” value as a spot-up shooter, per Synergy Sports. In the modern NBA, where such a premium is placed on offense, particularly through shooting, Russell can absolutely be considered a game-changing talent.

As far as potential landing spots for Russell, there were a few teams that consistently popped up in responses from league execs.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

One Eastern Conference executive told HoopsHype: “With D-Lo, I could see a lot of teams at least discussing him. I could see the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons all trying to see if there would be a deal – and probably some other teams too.”

Another responded to us: “Minnesota is possible and, I agree, they make sense. If not Minnesota, New York could be a possible landing spot.”

Finally, a third league exec told HoopsHype: “Russell could return a player and a pick. The Timberwolves are being linked to him, but they would have to include a lot more to complete a deal. It would probably include Robert Covington, but they’d need to add a lot more and the money doesn’t work.”

It’s no secret the Timberwolves desperately covet Russell, not just for his fit with the team (and the fit is definitely there, as Minnesota has badly needed a backcourt upgrade since Sam Cassell was there), but because of his friendship with the team’s best – and most important – player, Karl-Anthony Towns. There have been multiple occasions this season where the All-NBA-caliber big man has displayed his frustration with the constant losing, so the Timberwolves would be wise to find a way to improve their roster before he legitimately becomes disgruntled in Minnesota.

Could Andrew Wiggins and draft capital be enough for Golden State to accept a Russell trade? Wiggins has been a disappointment to this point in his career, but the Warriors have done a great job recently of getting the most out of their players, as was the case with Willie Cauley-SteinGlenn Robinson III and Alec Burks, who all became productive role players this year for the Dubs. If Golden State is able to work similar magic with Wiggins, they’d be filling a huge need on the wing to play alongside Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

Meanwhile, the Knicks likewise make sense for Russell, as New York is severely lacking firepower in their backcourt, and has been since the days of Allan Houston, who was their last ball-handler to be named an All-Star all the way back in 2000-01. There is also a report that Russell was interested in signing with the Knicks this past summer as a way to stick it to the Brooklyn Nets for choosing to replace him with Kyrie Irving, which presents another interesting dynamic in this potential pairing.

New York can offer Golden State a few different interesting young players on rookie-scale deals, like Frank Ntilikina or Kevin Knox, for Russell, though the one the Warriors undoubtedly would covet the most is shot-blocking menace Mitchell Robinson, who’d be the best center they’ve had since an in-prime Andrew Bogut. The Knicks probably wouldn’t want to part with Robinson, though.

Regardless, the Warriors don’t have to rush things here. If they don’t get any offers they deem worthwhile (and they still might, as the Timberwolves seem pretty desperate to land Russell), they can just hold onto their big offseason acquisition and try to move him over the offseason as many thought they’d do all along.

One league executive told HoopsHype: “To be honest, I think D’Angelo gets moved over the summer – not right now. The Warriors may try to package Russell and their 2020 first-round pick for a star since they’ll be in win-now mode next year.”

Holding on to Russell until then could also give the Warriors a chance to see how he fits alongside Curry, who is reportedly returning from a hand injury in March, giving Golden State around a month to see what they have in a Curry-Russell pairing. If they like what they see, maybe they keep Russell for the long haul.

But if they don’t, expect the market for Russell to heat up again over the offseason.

Report: Former Warrior, Andre Igoduala ready to sit out entire season in Memphis

According to David Aldridge of The Athletic, Andre Iguodala is prepared to sit out the entire 2019-20 season if he’s not traded from Memphis to an agreed-upon team.

We’ve reached the point of the NBA season where trade rumors are loudly swirling throughout the league. In the middle of it all is former Golden State Warriors’ swingman, Andre Iguodala.

Iguodala has yet to suit up for a game in the 2019-20 NBA season, and it’s not because he’s injured. Golden State moved Iguodala to the Grizzlies over the offseason and he has yet to report to Memphis as he waits to be traded to an agreed-upon destination. Iguodala and Memphis have mutually agreed that he would sit out until they found the right trade partner.

With the NBA trade deadline on the horizon, Iguodala will have to decide if he wants to either report to Memphis, play for a new team if he’s traded, or sit out the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

According to David Aldrige of The Athletic, Iguodala is prepared to sit out the rest of the season if Memphis can’t “orchestrate a trade with one of the agreed-upon teams.”

Behind standout rookie Ja Morant, the Memphis Grizzlies are surging towards a spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Muddying the situation, the Grizzlies now risk the chance of moving Iguodala to a contender they could potentially see in the playoffs.

Iguodala’s future with Memphis will be sealed for the rest of the season soon when the NBA hits trade deadline day.

Draymond Green: Warriors locker room staying realistic but not focused on trade deadline

Draymond Green spoke about the impact the upcoming trade deadline will have on the Warriors’ locker room.

The 2019-20 NBA season has been a profound change of pace for the Golden State Warriors. Over the past five seasons, the standard has been a trip to the NBA Finals for the Warriors, but injuries have rerouted their season.

Instead of focusing on the playoffs, Golden State has set its sight on the 2020 NBA trade deadline. Golden State has already traded Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks and now have several members of their team mixed into trade rumors. Multiple reports point to teams pursuing D’Angelo Russell, with Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III also linked to trades.

Worrying about trade rumors is new to Draymond Green and the rest of the Steve Kerr era Warriors. Green spoke to media after the Warriors win in Washington about how Golden State is handling this trade deadline in comparison to the past.

I think everything is different — it’s not quite the same, nothing is really the same, so you can’t approach it with the same mindset, but as a player just try and go out there each and every night and step on the floor to just play — forget about all those things, that’s why those guys have agents that handle whatever is going to happen, you know and you focus on doing your job and that’s what we try to do.

Reporters asked Green in Washington if the impact of the looming trade deadline was causing any angst in the Warriors’ locker room.

Yeah definitely — I think so, but it’s not something we’re focused on — we’re all realistic, we understand this business and what could possibly happen — we will just continue to play and continue to try and win — go from there.

Golden State will finish up their east coast road swing Brooklyn with a chance to register a winning road trip on the eve of the NBA trade deadline. When the Warriors return to the Bay Area, the trade rumors for the 2019-20 season will be put to rest.

With trade deadline looming, Alec Burks drops 30 vs. Wizards in Golden State 125-117 road win

Alec Burks 30-point scoring effort leads the Warriors to their first back-to-back road wins of the 2019-20 season.

Winning has been a limited occurrence for the Golden State Warriors in the 2019-20 season, even more, narrow has been their ability to win in bunches. However, during the Warriors five-game east coast road trip, Golden State has netted two-straight wins for only the second time this season.

The Warriors went wire-to-wire in Washington, winning 125-117. Golden State sealed back-to-back road wins for the first time in the 2019-20 season.

The Warriors were without their leading scorer D’Angelo Russell, but a veteran swingman stepped up to carry Golden State. Alex Burks tallied 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, adding five 3-pointers. Washington was Burks’s second 30-point scoring night on the season for Golden State.

Behind Burks, Glenn Robinson III and Draymond Green filled the gaps. Robinson III added 22 points while Green cracked another near triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

The Warriors travel to face the Nets in the final game of their road trip for homecoming night for Russell, who spent two seasons in Brooklyn. A win in Brooklyn will seal a winning road-trip for Golden State before heading back to San Francisco.

Sharing the rock

Against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Warriors racked up 39 total assists behind Draymond Green’s game-high 16. The Warriors doubled-down against the Washington Wizards, dropping 31 dimes.

The Warriors ball movement set up several open looks for the Warriors, resulting in scoring from up and down the roster. Six different members of Golden State scored in double figures in Washington, on 49.4 % shooting from the field.

Real deal Bradley Beal

Since being snubbed from the 2020 All-Star game, Bradley Beal has been on a warpath throughout the NBA. Beal has netted 34 or more points in Washington’s last six games, registering three wins in that span.

Against Golden State, the former Florida Gator didn’t slow down, tallying 43 points on 15-of-30 shooting. Beal added three 3-pointers and six assists, but it wasn’t enough against the Warriors

Injury Report; D’Angelo Russell (quad contusion) ruled out vs. Wizards

D’Angelo Russell will miss the third game of the Warriors’ five-game road trip in Washington with a quad contusion.

Since the start of the 2020 New Year, the Golden State Warriors have mightily struggled, losing 13-of-15 games. Yet, the team looked to be turning things around with a win 131-115 win in Cleveland amid their five-game east coast road swing.

However, for the Warriors, things got tougher in game three of the trip in Washington. D’Angelo Russell has been ruled out against the Wizards with a quad contusion.

Washington will be Russell’s 19th game of the season he’s missed due to injury. A flurry of different ailments has taken the former Eastern Conference All-Star out of games this season, including a shoulder, thumb, ankle and now quad injury. With their leading scorer out of Steve Kerr’s rotation, the Warriors have managed only three wins on 18 attempts.

Second-year guard, Jacob Evans III will start in Russell’s place in Washington. Draymond Green and Alec Burks should also see an increase in ball-handling responsibilities as the Warriors try to win two-straight games.

NBA Player Prop Bet Payday: DeRozan motivated to ball in hometown LA

Highlighting Monday’s best NBA player props with odds, analysis and picks.

The NBA’s post-Super Bowl Monday 10-game slate eases our disappointment of no more football. Aside from the games and totals themselves, bettors can find a ton of profitable NBA player props in tonight’s action.

Below are some NBA player props you should check out.

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last Monday updated at 3:30 p.m. ET.

DeRozan motivated to ball in hometown LA

(Photo credit: Troy Taormina – USA TODAY Sports)

DeMar DeRozan was born and raised in Los Angeles, so you know the recent passing of Kobe Bryant is on the front of his mind when his San Antonio Spurs visit the Clippers. BetMGM’s 24.5 point projection of DeRozan is puzzling because Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are listed as active but I think it’s explained with the motivational factor. DeRozan has played well recently, averaging 32.7 points per game over his last three and has really impressed in recent visits to Los Angeles. He has scored 25+ points in every game at Staples Center since joining the San Antonio Spurs. Plus DeRozan has performed better than his averages against Leonard in their 13 head-to-head meetings:

[protected-iframe id=”f1f323744fa60a1ad95837e3cfb8dca3-159279292-75965725″ info=”https://widgets.sports-reference.com/wg.fcgi?css=1&site=bbr&url=%2Fplay-index%2Fh2h_finder.cgi%3Frequest%3D1%26player_id1_hint%3DDeMar%2BDeRozan%26player_id1_select%3DDeMar%2BDeRozan%26player_id1%3Dderozde01%26player_id2_select%3DKawhi%2BLeonard%26player_id2%3Dleonaka01%26idx%3Dplayers&div=div_stats” ]

As you see, his per-game total of 21.3 on .500 field-goal percentage is better than his career average of 20 points per game on .457 FG%. Let’s lean into BetMGM’s bloated projection and BET DeROZAN OVER 24.5 (-112).

Beal will get buckets versus Warriors

( Photo credit: Jeremy Brevard – USA TODAY Sports)

Bradley Beal should be motivated by his All-Star snub and continue his current hot streak in Washington when his Wizards host the Golden State Warriors. He’s has scored 34+ points in each of his last six games and has 16 games above 31 points. Also, the Warriors give up the second-most points per game to shooting guards in the NBA (behind the Wizards, actually). This helps our case for Beal’s Over because both backcourts are primed to go back and forth tonight.

Also, I love the idea of getting reduced vig to BET BEAL OVER 30.5 (-106) points scored.

Simmons’ Super Bowl Hangover in Miami

(Photo credit: Steve Mitchell – USA TODAY Sports)

Check out social media and/or the U.S. tabloids and you’ll see Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons hanging with beau Kendall Jenner at last night’s Super Bowl LIV. Can he get up the next day against a quality defensive opponent in Miami? There’s a chance the Miami nightlife could slow him down as much as the Heat themselves.

Miami allows the second-fewest points per game and the third-fewest fantasy points per game to point guards. Also, in Simmons’ career in Miami, he’s never scored more than his BetMGM projected total of 17.5 and has only eclipsed that total in three of 10 overall games against Miami. Furthermore, an opposing starting point guard hasn’t scored more than 16 in any of the last 10 games against the Heat.

BET UNDER SIMMONS 17.5 (-134).

Prediction

Warriors 126, Wizards 120

Moneyline (ML)

The Wizards (-209) enter Monday on just their third two-game winning streak of the season, but they’ve yet to win three in a row. They’ve gone 4-6 across their last 10 games to push into 10th place in the Eastern Conference and they’re 11-11 on home court for the season.

The WARRIORS (+180) are big road dogs, as usual, but they’re worth a small wager. They stomped the Cleveland Cavaliers 131-112 Saturday to snap a five-game losing skid. They’re just 4-22 on the road, but their odds are too high to pass up as the Wiz are receiving too much respect from the oddsmakers.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Warriors to win straight up returns a profit of $17.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The WARRIORS (+5.5, -110) can also be backed against the spread Monday, where they’ll need to stay within 5 points in a loss or win outright. Golden State is 24-26 ATS overall and 13-13 on the road. It has cover the spread in four of its last five games following an outright victory.

The Wizards are 24-23-1 ATS overall and 12-10 at home. Both teams last played Saturday and Golden State is 17-11 ATS when playing on equal rest as its opponent, while Washington is 14-17 in equal-rest situations.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 234.5 (-115) is Monday’s easiest play. The Warriors have allowed at least 112 points in each of their last six games. The Wizards average 115.7 PPG, and they allowed 152 and 151 points in back-to-back games against the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks last Sunday and Tuesday.

Trade rumor rankings: D’Angelo Russell, Drummond, MKG and more

HoopsHype ranks the five players who have popped up the most in trade rumors over the past week, including Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell.

So far this season, we’ve seen five trades go down, with the most impactful being the Utah Jazz acquiring Jordan Clarkson from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Portland Trail Blazers landing Trevor Ariza, who has acclimated wonderfully to his new team. Some of the other moves that have gone down include the Dallas Mavericks trading for Willie Cauley-Stein and the Atlanta Hawks bringing Jeff Teague back to play a reserve role behind Trae Young, though neither player has done much for their new club quite yet.

Now, as we enter the home stretch before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, there’s a chance we see the action pick up at least a bit.

Below, HoopsHype ranks the five players who have popped up the most in rumors on the site’s Trade page over the past week.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

5. D’ANGELO RUSSELL

Scuttle has picked up recently on D’Angelo Russell’s trade prospects, but that doesn’t mean a move is imminent. Rather, we know where it’s possible he could end up over the summer, once the Golden State Warriors have Steph Curry and Klay Thompson back at full health and many believe they’ll look to move their third All-Star guard.

According to reports, the Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be the likeliest landing spot for Russell, due to the fact that they have a massive need at ball-handler and know that Russell is close with their best player, Karl-Anthony Towns.

Here’s what The Athletic’s Anthony Slater has reported on the matter:

“Part of the motivation for Minnesota’s Russell chase, quite clearly, is his relationship with Towns. They are close friends. Towns was part of the contingent that pitched Russell hard this summer. The Wolves know that acquiring Russell not only gets Towns his preferred pick-and-roll partner but also buys them time and faith. The Warriors are aware of this dynamic. It automatically bumps up Russell’s market value in conversations with the Wolves. Minnesota has dangled Andrew Wiggins, who is on a similar contract as Russell and fills a greater positional need.”

Andrew Wiggins for Russell might not be the perfect like-for-like swap talent-wise, but it could a good starting point for the two teams. We’ll see where this goes over the offseason.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

4. MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST

The Charlotte Hornets sit at 16-33 as we approach the trade deadline, five games out of the East’s final playoff spot with little chance of actually making that push to get over the hump. So it’s only natural they’re considered prime candidates to ship out some veterans over the next week.

One such player is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who is an able perimeter defender and on the final year of his contract, two factors that could make him appealing to contenders.

And apparently, one team has taken notice, as it was reported this week that Dallas has kicked the tires on a potential deal for Kidd-Gilchrist:

The 26-year-old defensive specialist might be a savvy pickup for Dallas, as his point-stopping prowess would mesh nicely with fellow wing Dorian Finney-Smith, and his low-usage style of play wouldn’t take away scoring looks from the team’s stars, Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis.

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

3. DEWAYNE DEDMON

Sacramento Kings big man Dewayne Dedmon has already seen himself removed from his team’s rotation, requested a trade, fined, gotten added back into the rotation and reconciled with Sacramento, all within the past month.

Pretty busy stretch for a player averaging just north of six points per game for his career, but such is the way things work in the modern NBA.

Regardless, according to the most recent reports on Dedmon’s trade candidacy, Atlanta has their eye on the big man, who enjoyed his two best career seasons as a member of the Hawks.

Dedmon’s rim-protecting, floor-spacing chops would fit nicely with what Atlanta needs at the 5-spot, and his veteran leadership could help promising power forward John Collins.

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

2. MARCUS MORRIS

Although a lot of the reports coming out of New York state that Marcus Morris’ preference would be to stay as a Knick for the long haul, that hasn’t stymied the reported interest out of contenders around the league.

In particular, there has been a lot of steam that the Los Angeles Clippers are hoping the Knicks change their mind on keeping Morris through the trade deadline so they can swoop in and add to their frontcourt.

Morris is having a fantastic campaign for New York, arguably his best since reaching the NBA, averaging over 19 points per game and knocking down a career-best 43.8 percent of his outside chances. That, plus his defensive versatility and overall toughness, would make him a fantastic addition to any contender.

But it looks like both Morris and the Knicks are set on sticking it out and agreeing to a long-term contract this summer. We’ll see if that changes.

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

1. ANDRE DRUMMOND

As we enter the week of the trade deadline, Andre Drummond’s market continues to be at an apparent standstill, according to reports from all over the place.

And as long as the Detroit Pistons don’t lower their expectations on a potential return – they want expiring money and an asset, either in the form of a first-round draft pick or a high-upside, young player – that’s not likely to change, because Drummond, for as productive as he is, doesn’t make much sense as a trade target right now. The All-Star center is on the final year of his deal and wants to get paid on his next contract, so whoever trades for him is committing to not just half a season of Drummond, but at least four or five years of him, at max or near-max money.

Why lose assets on a trade for the double-double machine when you’re also going to lose a ton of flexibility after acquiring him? Especially when they can just sign him this offseason when he hits unrestricted free agency? It just wouldn’t be smart roster-building to trade for Drummond right now – at least not at that price.

Just in case Detroit does lower their asking price, the team that has been connected with him most in recent reports are the New York Knicks, who are desperate for All-Star-level production wherever they can get it.

Report: Warriors listening to offers for D’Angelo Russell as trade deadline approaches

The Golden State Warriors are open to trading D’Angelo Russell at the trade deadline, Marc Stein reported.

The Golden State Warriors, with the worst record in the league, appear open to moving on from their best player this season in order to stack up assets to make a run next year when the healthy corps has returned.

With the Feb. 6 trade deadline right around the corner, the front office is listening to offers for point guard D’Angelo Russell, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Russell signed with the Warriors this past offseason to a four-year, $117 million deal.

The Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be most interested in his acquiring the point guard. Stein tweeted that it’s “no secret Minnesota wants D-Lo badly.”

The Timberwolves were one of the teams that pursued Russell hardest. Their free agent pitched included a helicopter ride, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

They hope to team him up with one of his best friends, star big Karl-Anthony Towns, which would keep Towns happy and add a 2019 All-Star who is averaging 23.8 points and 6.3 assists per game.

While Russell is having a productive year, there is sense to the Warriors moving him. With the 2020-21 salary cap slightly lower than expected, the team would likely have to trade Russell to avoid another year of paying the luxury tax.

As the 2019-20 season is a lost cause for Golden State, removing their best player from the equation would make it easier to secure a top draft pick and draft a highly-touted prospect to play with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green once everyone is healthy.

Moving Russell could also help them acquire less-expensive assets for future title runs. The Timberwolves offer may depend on the haul they get for Robert Covington, if they do trade him. According to Stein, Minnesota is hoping to receive two first-round picks in exchange for one of the league’s better 3-and-D forwards.

With two years remaining on Covington’s contract, it’s also not inconceivable the Warriors try to include him in a Russell deal and start Covington next to their three All-Stars next season.

However, Covington is owed more than $12 million both of the next two years, which would make it tougher to avoid the luxury tax.

Golden State is also “widely expected” to trade Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III, according to Stein.

Burks is on an expiring deal of $2.3 million and is averaging 15.8 points, 3.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds, each of which are career highs.

Robinson is also on a cheap expiring contract, owed just under $1.9 million. He is averaging 12.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Those two won’t fetch star returns, but it would help strengthen the Warriors’ asset pool instead of losing them in free agency for nothing.
