March Madness: Glenn Robinson III, Trey Burke win classic over Kansas

Our continued look at the March Madness history of the Philadelphia 76ers visits Glenn Robinson III and his time with the Michigan Wolverines.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has taken over the sports world with the professional sports in suspension and the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament. So, Sixers Wire will bring back some of the best moments of March Madness for the current Philadelphia 76ers.

This edition heads back to Glenn Robinson III’s days with the Michigan Wolverines in 2013. This game is one of the more classic games in not only Michigan history, but college basketball as a whole. It also is not so much about Robinson III, but former Sixer Trey Burke for knocking down one of the more amazing shots in NCAA history.

March 29, 2013

The Wolverines were feeling confident after two big wins to begin the Tournament and now they were running into the Kansas Jayhawks who held the top seed in their region. Kansas was led by a surefire NBA talent in Ben McLemore who was a projected lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft and the odds were stacked against Michigan in this one.

The Wolverines trailed by double-digits and Burke was scoreless at halftime with Michigan trailing 40-34 thanks to contributions by Robinson III and former Sixer Nik Stauskas. The Kansas lead was then 68-54 with just about seven minutes left to go and all seemed lost.

Burke then went on a rampage to get Michigan back in it, however, with 12.6 seconds left Kansas had a chance to ice it. They could not do it as a missed free-throw on the front end of the 1-and-1 gave them a chance and Burke drilled a deep triple to force overtime to lead Michigan to an 87-85 win in the extra session.

Mutch McGary led Michigan with 25 points and 14 rebounds, Burke had 23 points and 10 assists, and Robinson III had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Burke told reporters postgame:

We never had the mindset that we were going to lose the game. When we were down 14, we knew anything could still happen. It’s March, anything can happen.

The Wolverines will now continue their NCAA Tournament run when they take on the Florida Gators in the Elite 8. [lawrence-related id=28465,28458,28436]

Sixers in March Madness: Glenn Robinson III leads Michigan past VCU

We continue the March Madness run with Glenn Robinson III and the Michigan Wolverines.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has taken over the sports world with the professional sports in suspension and the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament. So, Sixers Wire will bring back some of the best moments of March Madness for the current Philadelphia 76ers.

We continue our path to the title game for Glenn Robinson III and the Michigan Wolverines. After Robinson III stepped up in a big way to lead 4 seed Michigan past South Dakota State, they moved on to the Round of 32 to take on the VCU Rams.

March 23, 2013

After struggling so much in the win over South Dakota State, Trey Burke had a better game in this one for Michigan. He got a few shots to drop early and he finished with 18 points and seven assists while Mitch McGary had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Wolverines.

As for Robinson III, he continued his hot shooting by going 7-for-10 from the floor for 14 points and nine rebounds in a 78-53 win to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1994. He had 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting in the opening win over the Jackrabbits. This is a good way to start the tournament for the freshman.

As for Robinson III, he and the team understand that there’s more work to be done. The Sweet 16 appearance is cool and it’s big for the program, but it is not the end goal.

He told reports:

We can’t end there. We can’t stop there. It’s something that we’ve already said we’ve already made up our minds that we need to go out and play as hard as we can and get more things done for this team.

Michigan now advances to take on the 1 seed Kansas Jayhawks so the challenges now get tougher for them. [lawrence-related id=28035,28024,28017]

Sixers March Madness: Glenn Robinson III leads Michigan to advancement

We dive into the March Madness run put on by Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has taken over the sports world with the professional sports in suspension and the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament. So, Sixers Wire will bring back some of the best moments of March Madness for the current Philadelphia 76ers.

We first started with big man Al Horford who began the 2007 title defense for Florida with a win over Jackson State and we will continue down that path again for sure, but Saturday’s edition will be Glenn Robinson III with the Michigan Wolverines. The 4 seed Wolverines began with a matchup against the 13 seed South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

March 21, 2013

Michigan was on upset alert heading into this matchup. While Michigan was laced with NBA talent up and down their roster, South Dakota State had an NBA talent of their own in Nate Wolters who was shooting up some draft boards thanks to his 2-way ability.

Wolters did a great job on Trey Burke early making him almost invisible out there and Michigan had to rely on their other pieces. That is where Glenn Robinson III, as well as Time Hardaway Jr., stepped up and performed. Robinson III finished with 21 points, with 17 coming in the second half, on 8-for-9 shooting to help Michigan pull away 71-56 and advance to the Round of 32.

Robinson III told reporters about his hot shooting after the win:

My confidence has always been there, but tonight the ball just felt right coming out of my hand. It hasn’t felt like that for a while, but when I started hitting shots, my teammates went right back to me. That’s the way this team plays. Even when Trey isn’t hitting shots, he’s making passes and getting us open shots.

It was an impressive performance for the freshman who was one of three to start for Michigan in this game. The Wolverines had a bit of a home-court advantage due to the game being played at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the former home of the Detroit Pistons, and they definitely took advantage of it.

March Madness: how 10 Sixers players fared in the NCAA Tournament

We take a look at the 10 Philadelphia 76ers who participated in March Madness.

With Selection Sunday right around the corner, everybody in the basketball world is getting ready for the phenomenon that is the NCAA Tournament also known as March Madness.

This time can be a time of reminiscing for a lot of NBA players. There are plenty of guys on the Philadelphia 76ers who have had their moments in the Tournament and we’re going to take a look back at all of them right now.

There are exactly 10 Sixers who competed in March Madness and we’ll start with a guy who is currently the team’s highest-paid player

Tobias Harris, Tennessee 2011

Harris played in only one game in the NCAA Tournament with the Tennessee Volunteers way back in 2011. His Vols faced off against the Michigan Wolverines and it did not go well at all. Harris played well scoring 19 points and getting to the foul line seven times, but he was the only player to score double-figures for Tennessee and it was a 75-45 loss in Round 1. Harris was then selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the draft.

Tobias Harris calls loss to Warriors ‘missed opportunity’ for Sixers

The Philadelphia 76ers are upset about a missed opportunity on Saturday night.

The Philadelphia 76ers have had one of the more frustrating seasons in the league. They have a ton of talent, but things have not gone the way they expected when the season began.

Saturday night was another prime example of that as they were stunned by the Golden State Warriors 118-114 despite Golden State resembling more of the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G League. The Warriors used young players Eric Paschall and Damion Lee to get past the Sixers late.

Philadelphia did hold a double-digit lead in this game and when considering how tight the Eastern Conference race for home-court advantage is right now, it’s tough to let opportunities like this one slip away. This was a game the Sixers should have won.

“Thought we put ourselves in a position to win the game,” said Tobias Harris who led the way with 24 points. “It’s a missed opportunity, especially in the fourth quarter and down the stretch, so we definitely feel like it’s a missed opportunity. Should’ve been a road win for us, but we came out here and we lost.”

The loss drops Philadelphia half a game behind the Indiana Pacers for the 5 seed in the East and 2.5 games back of the Miami Heat for the 4 seed. The Sixers, who dropped to 10-24 on the road, need to win games such as this one on Saturday to make sure they get that important home-court advantage.

“I mean at this point in the season when you see that there’s fewer and fewer games you have to handle business,” said veteran Al Horford. “What’s most frustrating about this one was that we were in control most of the game and it’s dangerous when you kind of let a team keep hanging and hanging, we’re never able to quite pull away, we kept on trading baskets with them and it wasn’t good enough tonight.”

Instead of the veteran Sixers making big plays in the fourth, it was the young and inexperienced Warriors who made the big plays when needed.

“Thought they played with a lot of confidence down the stretch,” said Glenn Robinson III. “They made some tough shots and I think that we tried to get the ball to T (Harris) and let him go to work. They did a good job closing out, but I think we could’ve been better with our execution on plays that we drew up, but at the end of the day I don’t think that it was those particular plays in the fourth quarter, but it was the whole game and I thought we could’ve played a little better.”

While the Sixers lament on the clear missed opportunity that passed them, they now have to return home and get healthy. They are still missing Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Josh Richardson and it is huge to have them back for the stretch run.

Sixers vs. Kings preview: Sixers look to cool down red hot Kings

The Philadelphia 76ers continue the road trip against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.

The Philadelphia 76ers continue their road trip on Thursday when they take on the Sacramento Kings after two tough losses in Los Angeles. They will need more consistent contributions from the roster as the team continues to be hit by the injury bug as they are missing three starters.

The Kings will not be an easy matchup on Thursday. They have played some solid basketball since the All-Star break as they have won three in a row and seven of their last 10 overall as they try and make a push for the playoffs. Sacramento has not made the playoffs since 2006 so they will be playing some inspired basketball to make sure this drought ends.

With that said, it’s time for the game guide to this one:

Storylines

Sixers not concerned about losses

The Sixers started this trip shorthanded and they knew what they were going up against on this road trip. It started off in Los Angeles to take on two of the top teams in the league in the Clippers and the Lakers and they went toe-to-toe with them. They had a chance in both of those games, but they just did not have enough. Those efforts leave the team feeling confident about themselves.

“I don’t really got a concern,” said Robinson III. “It’s a tough break. People out, you’ve just got to continue to play hard and play together and keep our confidence up. I think we’ve got some great players no matter who’s out there and just continue to play together.”

Sixers happy with shooting

The Sixers have been a bad road team all season, but one of the main reasons why they have been bad on the road is due to their poor shooting compared to how they shoot at home. After making 21 triples against the Clippers, they made 16 against the Lakers and those shooting efforts leave the team feeling good about what they can do.

“To find shooters in the way that we did, moving the ball, understanding the different rotations where we can get our shooters shots, delivering balls where they don’t really have to reach, they actually can catch and shoot it against a long, athletic team and get shots off, all those things I think were a positive,” Brown explained. “It is true, as a team we shot the ball well tonight (Tuesday) and we need to given the situation that we have.”

Prediction

This will not be an easy game for either team. Both teams are going to be playing some desperate basketball, Sixers to try and snap their road skid and the Kings looking to make a playoff push, and it should be an entertaining game. It is still hard to see Philadelphia going into Sacramento and getting a win down as many big pieces as they are right now. Al Horford, Tobias Harris, Glenn Robinson III, and others will have to give more on this trip.

Sixers encouraged by 3-point success to begin road trip in LA

The Philadelphia 76ers are happy with the amount of success they have had from the 3-point line.

The Philadelphia 76ers knew that this would be a tough road trip for them. They would be facing two of the top teams in the league to begin the trip with the Los Angeles Clippers and then the Los Angeles Lakers and they would have to do so without Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid before losing Josh Richardson as well.

The one area that coach Brett Brown would like for them to improve was in the 3-point shooting department. A lot of Philadelphia’s struggles on the road can be attributed to their lack of 3-point success on the road compared to at home.

They shot 21-for-43 from deep against the Clippers on Sunday and they shot 16-for-40 against the Lakers on Tuesday. Those are solid numbers for this team on the road.

“I think they’ve done a great job,” Brown said. “I like the quantity, we put up 40 tonight. That is a number, with the injuries, that interests me, even exceeding that, truthfully.”

With the injuries all over their lineup, the Sixers will have to play a certain way. They will have to play faster, they will have to scrap a bit more, and they will have to fire up more threes in order to score their points. They won’t be able to rely on Simmons or Embiid to bail them out.

So, keep firing them away.

The Sixers put on some pretty solid performances to begin this road trip. It was a tough ask of this team to go into Staples Center and beat two really good teams in the Clippers and the Lakers on the road being so shorthanded. Tobias Harris, Glenn Robinson III, Furkan Korkmaz, and others will have to keep shooting it from deep to help the team move forward.

If they can put on another performance such as these ones against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday, then they will give the team a good chance to win. [lawrence-related id=27085,27075,27065]

Glenn Robinson III feels comfortable having his guy Alec Burks with him

Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III explains his close relationship with Alec Burks.

It is never easy getting traded in the middle of the season, but that is something that Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III is adjusting to after being acquired from the Golden State Warriors at the deadline. The one thing that has helped him is that Alec Burks was included in the trade as well.

The two struck up a good friendship during their team in The Bay and the fact that they were both sent to Philadelphia in the deal helps Robinson III find a comfort zone.

“That’s is my guy,” he said after scoring a career-high 25 points on Tuesday. “We talk all the time. We watch film together, we talk about the game together, obviously with the whole move we stayed up in a hotel, so we’re always together. We really just kind of created that bond.”

Like Tobias Harris with Boban Marjanovic in the season before, a big trade can be soothed over when you have somebody you’re close with come with you. That bond can really help a guy make adjustments fairly quickly.

“It’s nice to have someone who’s going through the same thing,” Robinson III continued. “Even his daughter is exactly a year old than my daughter so I talk to him like ‘Oh what is she doing over here?’ and things like that. We created a bond on and off the court.”

After a strong performance on Tuesday, the Sixers are hoping that Robinson III can build off the performance and continue to grow in his role with the Sixers. It is absolutely important for him to continue to make plays and score off the team’s bench. They will need it when the playoffs start. [lawrence-related id=27057,27039,27023]

Al Horford, Glenn Robinson III have no concerns about Sixers after loss

Philadelphia 76ers veterans Al Horford and Glenn Robinson III explain their lack of concerns after the loss.

The Philadelphia 76ers are 0-2 to begin a four-game road trip after their latest loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night at Staples Center, but they are feeling good about themselves.

The team is still dealing with a lot of injuries as they continue to be down three starters in Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Josh Richardson and yet they had a lot of fight in them and they even held a lead as many as 13. It just wasn’t enough against a Lakers team that had both LeBron James and Anthony Davis healthy.

Due to the fight the team showed, the Sixers don’t necessarily have any concerns.

“I think we’ve been playing well,” said Al Horford. “I think we had too many turnovers tonight (Tuesday) that led to momentum plays for them. I turned it over at the end of the first half and then another one and it piled up and they made a run. From tonight’s game (Tuesday), I’d say we need to handle pressure better, take care of the ball, and I think that should put us in a great place.”

Glenn Robinson III, who scored a career-high tying 25 points, echoed Horford’s comments.

“I don’t really got a concern,” said Robinson III. “It’s a tough break. People out, you’ve just got to continue to play hard and play together and keep our confidence up. I think we’ve got some great players no matter who’s out there and just continue to play together.”

The Sixers are putting themselves in a position to win basketball games. It is all about just continuing to figure out how to fix these little mistakes that are costing them in games.

Their next chance will come on Thursday when the team faces the Sacramento Kings at the Golden 1 Center.  [lawrence-related id=27057,27039,27018]

Glenn Robinson III reacts to career-high scoring night in loss to Lakers

Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III reacts to his career-high scoring effort against the Los Angeles Lakers.

It was another road loss for the Philadelphia 76ers as they fell to the Los Angeles Lakers 120-107, but it was a solid game for a team that was down three starters. It was another opportunity for others to step up and on Tuesday, it was Glenn Robinson III.

It had been a tough go at it for the veteran out of Michigan, he had missed his first 11 3-pointers for Philadelphia before finally knocking one down, but he had a breakthrough against the Lakers. He scored a career-high 25 points and he shot 10-for-15 from the floor while knocking down three from deep.

“Just continuing to stay confident,” he said afterward. “I’ve got some great teammates and they believe in me. They’ve seen what I can do and they just kept imploring and empowering me and just really, confidence. I kept my confidence and that’s all. I continued to believe in myself and just went out and gave it my all.”

For a guy shot 40% from deep with the Golden State Warriors before the trade, it felt good to finally have a few shots drop for him.

“It felt to good to see shots go down,” he said. “But at the end of the day, it’s a loss. When me and AB (Alec Burks) first got here, our goal was to help this team win. So we have to continue to figure out ways to do that, especially with guys out, but I’m still learning.”

This is all still a learning process for him. He started all 48 games for the Warriors and he was averaging over 30 minutes a night and now he is averaging roughly 15 minutes a night for Philadelphia. He was starting a few games, but he could not find a rhythm like he did coming off the bench on Tuesday.

“I just tried to get my rhythm early,” he explained. “I just tried to get going. I just remain confident in myself and I knew some shots would fall. I’m just going to continue to do the same thing.”

The Sixers will need more of this out of him when the team continues on the road trip. They head to Sacramento to face a hot Kings team so they will need more contributions from him and everybody else. [lawrence-related id=27039,27018,27011]
