Sixers star Joel Embiid will play vs. Pacers, Glenn Robinson III doubtful

Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid will play in Saturday’s restart opener against the Indiana Pacers.

The Philadelphia 76ers are officially getting back at it on Saturday and they will be taking on the Indiana Pacers in a big matchup for them. The Sixers and the Pacers are currently tied for the 5 seed in the East, but Philadelphia is sitting at the 6 seed as the Pacers have the tiebreaker.

Philadelphia was dealing with injury issues over their three scrimmage games, but they did receive some good news on Friday as they get set for the restart opener.

Big mn Joel Embiid missed their final two scrimmage games with a right calf issue and he is all good to go and will play on Saturday. Meanwhile, Raul Neto is dealing with lower back tightness and he will be probable while Glenn Robinson III is doubtful with a left hip pointer injury.

The Sixers and the Pacers will tipoff at 7:00 p.m. EST from the VISA Athletic Center inside the bubble in Orlando. The NBA has returned. [lawrence-related id=35884,35874,35865]

Sixers praise Glenn Robinson III for accepting, understanding role

The Philadelphia 76ers are happy with Glenn Robinson III and the acceptance of his role.

The Philadelphia 76ers are heading into this restart in Orlando with new life. They will be looking to resume their chase towards an NBA championship and one of the guys who will play a part in their playoff run will be Glenn Robinson III.

Acquired from the Golden State Warriors way back in February, the Sixers will be looking at him to make a big impact off their bench. He missed the final scrimmage game after suffering a hip pointer injury in the second scrimmage game, but the team is still counting on him to be a presence off their bench.

Coach Brett Brown loved what he saw out of the veteran out of Michigan during the scrimmages as it seems that he finally has a role on the Sixers.

“I think the thing that most stands out for me as it relates to praise for Glenn is the simplicity of his game,” said Brown. “He understands his lane. He understands his role. He understands that these two things will rule his day. I’m going to go guard maybe the best wing while I’m on the court that the other team has. I am a defensive-minded off the bench player, this is how I can best my team win.”

During his time with the Warriors, Robinson III’s role was to be a 3-and-D option. He shot 40% from deep with Golden State before struggling initially for Philadelphia before the hiatus. In the Orlando restart, he shot the ball with confidence and he was able to show off his explosion a bit more.

“Then you go to the other side and he’s not trying to make crazy plays,” Brown added. “He can play catch go-go catch game when there’s a pass out because of the fact he can shoot, people guard him close which lets him play downhill that much more easily. I feel the simplicity of those two things and he accepts that, he understands that and I think he does it really, really well.”

On top of that, it is not like he is a young and inexperienced guy. He has been to the playoffs a few times with the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons. He can give the team some good playoff minutes when the time calls for it in August.

“It’s not like he’s 21-years old, he’s got a physicality and some years under his belt where you have a level of trust he can come in a playoff environment, grab that rotation and chunk of minutes because of the two things offense and defense that he does and thinks about,” Brown finished with. “I feel like that’s where my mind settles when I think of what I’ve seen with Glenn and how I intend on using him.”

It does appear that Robinson III will be in the wing rotation mix when the season does officially resume on Saturday. Brown has used a mixture of Furkan Korkmaz, Matisse Thybulle, and Robinson III as well and now that he understands his role, Robinson III will continue to make a difference for Philadelphia. Brett Brown gives update on Glenn Robinson III, happy with his play

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown gives an update on Glenn Robinson III and he has been happy with his play.

The Philadelphia 76ers are dealing with the injury bug as they had to endure some issues on Sunday in their 102-97 scrimmage loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. They played the game without Joel Embiid and Raul Neto and then they lost Glenn Robinson III in the first half of the game.

Before he left with a left hip pointer injury, Robinson III was playing pretty well. He scored seven points while knocking down 2-for-3 from deep and he had three rebounds before leaving. This comes after a solid effort in Friday’s scrimmage opener when he had five points and a triple.

Despite the setback, coach Brett Brown does not expect it to be serious and he has been happy with his play so far. Not just in games either, he has shown a lot in practice.

“He had a hip pointer. I was told to take him out because of that,” Brown said. “Nothing that serious. I think he’s been playing really well. I’ve been happy with him all over the place. He had great practice sessions as well.”

Robinson III will be fighting for rotational minutes along with Furkan Korkmaz and Matisse Thybulle so for his sake, he needs to play in Tuesday’s scrimmage finale against the Dallas Mavericks. [lawrence-related id=35553,35545,35523]

Glenn Robinson III out for rest of game vs. Thunder with hip injury

Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III will not return in their matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The injury bug is continuing to bite the Philadelphia 76ers inside the Orlando bubble at Disney World. After already being down Joel Embiid and Raul Neto before their scrimmage matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team is now dealing with another injury.

Wing player Glenn Robinson III, who scored seven points in the first half, suffered a left hip pointer after a collision with a few Thunder players. He left to go to the locker room with Philadelphia leading before coming back out to the bench. The team then made a decision at halftime to hold him out for the rest of this game.

The Sixers have to hope that their guys will get healthy before the season does officially resume on August 1 against the Indiana Pacers.

On the court, Ben Simmons is having another solid game on the floor and the Sixers hold a large lead over the Thunder in the third quarter. [lawrence-related id=35510,35504,35449]

Brett Brown says opposition will decide who he turns to off his bench

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown describes how the wing rotation will be used in the team’s restart.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in Orlando preparing for a season resumption. They have a few questions to answer as they are making a few changes to their rotation. The big one is Shake Milton moving into the starting lineup and Al Horford moving to the bench.

This is a move that affects the rest of the bench unit as coach Brett Brown will now have to figure out how to work in his players. Philadelphia already has a potent starting five and Horford will definitely get some minutes and that’s already six players.

Where does that leave guys like Matisse Thybulle, Glenn Robinson III, Furkan Kormaz, and Alec Burks? They will have to fight for minutes and at times, the opposition will decide who Brown turns to. For example, against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, Brown rolled with Thybulle due to his defensive skills and he can defend Grizzlies scorer Ja Morant.

“Let’s go to the starting point, it’s highly competitive,” Brown explained. “This is growing quite rapidly into who claims that chunk of the stat sheet as it relates to minutes. I think that Matisse is still defensively, you fear that. Some of his slashing stands out, him sitting in a stance stalking Ja Morant, there is something that he has as a unique skill package.”

Then, there’s Robinson III who was known as a 3-and-D option for the Golden State Warriors before being acquired by Philadelphia. His athletic ability is something that stands out to Brown and it’s an aspect of the game that should earn him some minutes. He showed off some of that game in Friday’s win.

“There’s a physicality to Glenn on some go catch-catch go stuff at the rim that I think that he’s really good at,” the coach added. “I think that he’s embraced being a go guy like shot goes up, go get offensive rebounds. I thought that he was committed and got rewarded at times for doing that.”

At the end of the day, whoever the Sixers play, it will be focused on matchups and who Brown feels the most comfortable with. Against Memphis, he rolled with Thybulle for a little over 16 minutes while Robinson III played 14 minutes. That is due to the fact that he felt comfortable rolling with those two physical defenders.

“I think, in general, that logjam in a good way is highly competitive and driven at times by who we’re guarding,” Brown finished with. “For instance, Ja Morant and Matisse Thybulle.”

The Sixers will continue their scrimmage schedule in Orlando on Sunday at noon EST against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It will be interesting to see if Burks gets more time considering they have to face Chris Paul or Brown continues to give Thybulle and Robinson III the minutes against not only Paul, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as well. Glenn Robinson III now understands role with Sixers, sees opportunity

Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III says he now understands his role as the team moves forward.

When the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Glenn Robinson III from the Golden State Warriors back in February–it feels like ages ago–the team was looking for him to provide some scoring off their bench. However, there were so many wings on the team and it felt like he needed some more clarity.

Over the break, the veteran appears to have found that as the team gets set to resume the season in Orlando inside the bubble.

“It’s just coming in and trying to do my job at the highest level every day both defensively and offensively,” he explained. “Playing at that wing position, I think I’ll be facing a lot of wings that I’ll be having an opportunity to step up and guard and get out and run and knock down shots and have fun.”

Robinson III was having a career season with the Warriors averaging 12.9 points and shooting 40% from deep while playing 31.6 minutes a night. That was not going to happen in Philadelphia with the amount of depth on the roster as those numbers dropped to 7.4 points, 28.6% shooting from deep, and 18.9 minutes per game.

The opportunity is there for him to make a big impact on the team’s upcoming playoff run. He is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason so this is a chance to prove that he can be a big part of a team’s playoff run. However, minutes are still not guaranteed on this team.

“That’s going to be the challenge for me as the coach when you start getting into it’s Matisse and Glenn Robinson and Alec Burks and Furkan Korkmaz or Mike Scott,” Brown said on his rotation. “I think a lot of it’s going to be driven out of matchups. Like the opponent that we play and how do we match up?”

In the final four games for Philadelphia leading into the suspension, Robinson III averaged 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting a red hot 54.5% from deep. Those types of performances suggest that he was beginning to turn things around. That should give him some momentum heading into this restart.

Given the opportunity presented to him, both Robinson III and the Sixers would benefit from his strong play. Philadelphia would be able to use his help to go deep into the playoffs while he would be able to make a strong case for free agency. [lawrence-related id=35182,35171,35161]

Glenn Robinson III amazed by young Shake Milton: ‘I believe in Shake’

Philadelphia 76ers veteran Glenn Robinson III has high praise for young Shake Milton.

The Philadelphia 76ers are shaking things up, literally.

Bad puns aside, the Sixers are moving Shake Milton into the starting lineup as the point guard as they plan to become a much faster team on the offensive side of the ball. The plan is for Milton to come in and provide a lot of shooting to space the floor as well as being able to utilize Ben Simmons more off the ball.

So far in practice in Orlando, Milton has been much more aggressive on the offensive end and he has become more vocal. That type of work ethic can be emulated by everybody and he has caught the attention of his veteran teammates including Glenn Robinson III.

“Shake’s going to be Shake,” said Robinson III. “I think he’s doing a great job of not letting the media and not letting different distractions affect his game. He comes and he works hard every day, putting up shots, putting in work every single day so I’m proud of him.”

It is that type of work ethic that has turned Milton from an afterthought in the league to now a starter on a title contender. He began turning heads in late February when he had to take on more playing time with injuries to Simmons and Josh Richardson and he did not look back. He shot 51.2% from deep over the final 20 games leading into the league suspension and he scored 39 points on the road against the Los Angeles Clippers.

“Against the Clippers, he was scoring 39 and that’s him,” Robinson III added. “He’s got that chip on his shoulder and he’ll continue to prove that that’s him on a nightly basis. He may not score 39 every game, but that type of caliber player is who he is and I believe in Shake.”

Milton is a guy who continues to be one of the hardest workers in the league. He is a guy who puts in a tremendous amount of work before and after practice and that’s something that Robinson III did not know about the second-year man out of SMU.

“That’s been him since I got here and as far as I know, he’s been working like that throughout his whole career,” the veteran forward added. “We’ve got a lot of high-level guys that put in the work.”

Milton will need to continue to keep working and help the Sixers on their quest for a championship. He could be the missing piece to a starting lineup that badly needed help on the offensive end in order to spread the floor. This could unlock a lot of new dynamics that the team can offer. Tobias Harris makes personal plea seeking justice for Breonna Taylor

Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris has made a public plea for justice for Breonna Taylor.

Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris has been outspoken in the past about social issues in the world and on Monday, he had another plea in the ongoing investigation of the killing of Breonna Taylor by police officers in Kentucky. The officers involved in the case have not been arrested or detained and that does not sit right with Harris.

For his media availability on Monday, Harris was asked about the initiative by Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook and the NBPA in order to spread more messages on social issues. However, he only had one message and that was a plea for justice to Kentucky attorney general Daniel Cameron.

“Nothing against the T-shirts, but we want to make sure Daniel Cameron will arrest the cops and officers involved with Breonna Taylor’s death,” Harris said. “That’s all I got to say. That is going to be my answer for every question. For Daniel Cameron to step up, and do what’s right, and that’s the only message I’ve got today.”

Harris has spoken in the past about racial injustice as he has given his own personal experiences with those issues in his life. He has also attended a lot of peaceful protests so far in the city of Philadelphia with rookie Matisse Thybulle and there will be more coming with the team in the bubble in Orlando with Harris leading the way.

“Given the current condition the world is in, I think those things naturally pop up naturally along with the virus talks,” said Glenn Robinson III. “We’ve just taken it amongst ourselves to talk as men a little bit better and a little bit more and just be vulnerable and open with each other. We’re leaning on Tobias right now and we’re going to come together as a team and figure out some way to go forward and do something for the city of Philadelphia to come together with everything that’s going on right now.”

The Sixers will play their first scrimmage game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday and that is when they could possibly send another message on these serious issues. [lawrence-related id=35037,35023,35014]

Alec Burks still working to understand role, bubble helps with chemistry

Philadelphia 76ers guard Alec Burks is still working to understand his role on the team moving forward.

When the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III from the Golden State Warriors back in February, the Sixers were looking for them to add more bench scoring and shooting. However, they did not have much time to get into a groove before the league shut down March 11.

Robinson III has had time with coach Brett Brown and his schemes before so he still has an idea of what’s expected of him. As far as Burks is concerned? Not just yet. He mentioned before the team left for Orlando, he admitted that he still not sure what his role will be and after a week of practicing inside the bubble, he is still working to learn his role on the team.

“It’s only been, what, a week of practice?” said Burks. “It’s like a regular training camp so it’s still a work in progress. I’m still getting to know everybody, they’re getting to know me. We’ll just see how we progress and it will be more clear as the games come along.”

The Sixers are planning to run some more pick-and-roll with their new lineup and that is something more tailored to Burks’ game. Before the season was suspended, Philadelphia ran the pick-and-roll only 13.1% of the time per NBA Stats. With the new changes, that should help Burks fit into the Sixers more.

“I like playing the pick-and-roll. I learned it a lot in my years past, just trying to master it.” Burks added. “I think it plays to my game very well. I think it’s great for our team. I think with the weapons we have, I think most of our ball-handlers play great in the pick-and-roll with Ben (Simmons), Joel (Embiid), Al (Horford), Mike (Scott), KO (Kyle O’Quinn). I think we can play great off each other so I think it’s a great thing for the team in general beside myself.”

Due to the fact that the Sixers are such a new team, it can be tough to build chemistry. However, living inside the bubble where the only people you can really interact with are your teammates, which helps Burks build some time with his new team.

“I think for me, because I haven’t been here that long, I got to know the guys a little bit better being down here in this bubble doing different things,” he explained. “It’s been good, great for me.”

The bubble has been tricked out with a lot of different activities to do while being safe. There are video games, a player’s lounge with ping-pong tables and card games, golfing, fishing, and everything else that can bring a team together.

“It’s like a summer camp down here,” laughed Burks. “You’re around your teammates, your coaches, and staff, you do all of the activities together like golfing and fishing. It takes you back to like a kid in a sense.”

Sixers going full tilt at practice, Glenn Robinson III has back discomfort

The Philadelphia 76ers have gone full tilt in practice with the exception being Glenn Robinson III.

The Philadelphia 76ers are officially getting back in the swing of things as they have completely gone at it in practice so far. They have made a few different tweaks to the lineup as it appears that Shake Milton will take over the starting point guard role and Ben Simmons will be moved over to the power forward spot.

Due to those changes, the Sixers have been going all in at practice to begin the resumption in Orlando. Coach Brett Brown has been pleased with the team’s conditioning so far and that has allowed him to ramp up the team’s workload and have them ready for the restart.

“I like how we designed the first two days of practice,” Brown began. “It was done with the mindset that we want to ramp things up, not just come in all excited and kill them. I believe the first two practices from a loading perspective and some static stuff where you can teach and slow down and it’s not crazy in relation to just cardio work at the start has been wise.”

Brown mentioned during the league suspension that he did not want the Sixers to use the pandemic as an excuse to not be ready for this restart. The team has done an excellent job in terms of their fitness base and that has allowed Brown and his staff to go full tilt and all in on these practices.

“I think it’s been well designed and today (Monday) will be a day that there will be more teaching, but the health of our team is excellent. The fitness base is the most surprising. They’ve responded completely to the challenge I gave them.”

The players on the Sixers roster have also agreed that this has been a good start to practice for the resumption.

“It’s definitely been very competitive, back-and-forth like coach said,” added Mike Scott. “Everyone’s came in in shape and it’s been great. Jo’s (Joel Embiid) been playing great, I try to double him, make it hard for him, foul him when I can. It hasn’t been working. Like coach said, it’s definitely been impressive.

There was one minor hiccup as the team decided to hold out Glenn Robinson III for a little bit, but Brown did add that it was not anything bad.

“Glenn Robinson, we’re going to slow down a little bit with, it’s nothing dramatic at all,” Brown explained.

Later, it was revealed that he has back discomfort and he has received treatment.

This is a good start for Philadelphia as they get back into the grind and the challenge of having to get back into the mindset of chasing a championship. [lawrence-related id=34553,34545,34386]
