Draymond Green: Warriors locker room staying realistic but not focused on trade deadline

Draymond Green spoke about the impact the upcoming trade deadline will have on the Warriors’ locker room.

The 2019-20 NBA season has been a profound change of pace for the Golden State Warriors. Over the past five seasons, the standard has been a trip to the NBA Finals for the Warriors, but injuries have rerouted their season.

Instead of focusing on the playoffs, Golden State has set its sight on the 2020 NBA trade deadline. Golden State has already traded Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks and now have several members of their team mixed into trade rumors. Multiple reports point to teams pursuing D’Angelo Russell, with Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III also linked to trades.

Worrying about trade rumors is new to Draymond Green and the rest of the Steve Kerr era Warriors. Green spoke to media after the Warriors win in Washington about how Golden State is handling this trade deadline in comparison to the past.

I think everything is different — it’s not quite the same, nothing is really the same, so you can’t approach it with the same mindset, but as a player just try and go out there each and every night and step on the floor to just play — forget about all those things, that’s why those guys have agents that handle whatever is going to happen, you know and you focus on doing your job and that’s what we try to do.

Reporters asked Green in Washington if the impact of the looming trade deadline was causing any angst in the Warriors’ locker room.

Yeah definitely — I think so, but it’s not something we’re focused on — we’re all realistic, we understand this business and what could possibly happen — we will just continue to play and continue to try and win — go from there.

Golden State will finish up their east coast road swing Brooklyn with a chance to register a winning road trip on the eve of the NBA trade deadline. When the Warriors return to the Bay Area, the trade rumors for the 2019-20 season will be put to rest.

With trade deadline looming, Alec Burks drops 30 vs. Wizards in Golden State 125-117 road win

Alec Burks 30-point scoring effort leads the Warriors to their first back-to-back road wins of the 2019-20 season.

Winning has been a limited occurrence for the Golden State Warriors in the 2019-20 season, even more, narrow has been their ability to win in bunches. However, during the Warriors five-game east coast road trip, Golden State has netted two-straight wins for only the second time this season.

The Warriors went wire-to-wire in Washington, winning 125-117. Golden State sealed back-to-back road wins for the first time in the 2019-20 season.

The Warriors were without their leading scorer D’Angelo Russell, but a veteran swingman stepped up to carry Golden State. Alex Burks tallied 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, adding five 3-pointers. Washington was Burks’s second 30-point scoring night on the season for Golden State.

Behind Burks, Glenn Robinson III and Draymond Green filled the gaps. Robinson III added 22 points while Green cracked another near triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

The Warriors travel to face the Nets in the final game of their road trip for homecoming night for Russell, who spent two seasons in Brooklyn. A win in Brooklyn will seal a winning road-trip for Golden State before heading back to San Francisco.

Sharing the rock

Against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Warriors racked up 39 total assists behind Draymond Green’s game-high 16. The Warriors doubled-down against the Washington Wizards, dropping 31 dimes.

The Warriors ball movement set up several open looks for the Warriors, resulting in scoring from up and down the roster. Six different members of Golden State scored in double figures in Washington, on 49.4 % shooting from the field.

Real deal Bradley Beal

Since being snubbed from the 2020 All-Star game, Bradley Beal has been on a warpath throughout the NBA. Beal has netted 34 or more points in Washington’s last six games, registering three wins in that span.

Against Golden State, the former Florida Gator didn’t slow down, tallying 43 points on 15-of-30 shooting. Beal added three 3-pointers and six assists, but it wasn’t enough against the Warriors

Report: Warriors listening to offers for D’Angelo Russell as trade deadline approaches

The Golden State Warriors are open to trading D’Angelo Russell at the trade deadline, Marc Stein reported.

The Golden State Warriors, with the worst record in the league, appear open to moving on from their best player this season in order to stack up assets to make a run next year when the healthy corps has returned.

With the Feb. 6 trade deadline right around the corner, the front office is listening to offers for point guard D’Angelo Russell, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Russell signed with the Warriors this past offseason to a four-year, $117 million deal.

The Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be most interested in his acquiring the point guard. Stein tweeted that it’s “no secret Minnesota wants D-Lo badly.”

The Timberwolves were one of the teams that pursued Russell hardest. Their free agent pitched included a helicopter ride, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

They hope to team him up with one of his best friends, star big Karl-Anthony Towns, which would keep Towns happy and add a 2019 All-Star who is averaging 23.8 points and 6.3 assists per game.

While Russell is having a productive year, there is sense to the Warriors moving him. With the 2020-21 salary cap slightly lower than expected, the team would likely have to trade Russell to avoid another year of paying the luxury tax.

As the 2019-20 season is a lost cause for Golden State, removing their best player from the equation would make it easier to secure a top draft pick and draft a highly-touted prospect to play with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green once everyone is healthy.

Moving Russell could also help them acquire less-expensive assets for future title runs. The Timberwolves offer may depend on the haul they get for Robert Covington, if they do trade him. According to Stein, Minnesota is hoping to receive two first-round picks in exchange for one of the league’s better 3-and-D forwards.

With two years remaining on Covington’s contract, it’s also not inconceivable the Warriors try to include him in a Russell deal and start Covington next to their three All-Stars next season.

However, Covington is owed more than $12 million both of the next two years, which would make it tougher to avoid the luxury tax.

Golden State is also “widely expected” to trade Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III, according to Stein.

Burks is on an expiring deal of $2.3 million and is averaging 15.8 points, 3.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds, each of which are career highs.

Robinson is also on a cheap expiring contract, owed just under $1.9 million. He is averaging 12.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Those two won’t fetch star returns, but it would help strengthen the Warriors’ asset pool instead of losing them in free agency for nothing.

On the week of the trade deadline, don’t be surprised if the Warriors are sellers.

Draymond Green’s 16 assists lead Warriors to blowout vs. Cavs, 131-112

Draymond Green racked up 16 assists in Cleveland with seven different Warriors scoring in double figures to break Golden State’s five-game losing streak.

It hasn’t happened much throughout the 2019-20 NBA season, but against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Golden State Warriors looked and played like the best team on the floor. Instead of a tight loss at the end of the game, the Warriors finished their night in Cleveland with a blowout victory, 131-112.

A monster third quarter from beyond the arc decided the game in the Warriors favor. Golden State hit a franchise-record 10 3-pointers on 10-of-14 long-range shooting in Cleveland to stretch their lead to 105-78 heading in the final period. The Warriors finished the third quarter scoring 44 points to the Cavaliers 19. Draymond Green added eight of his 16 assists in the third quarter, while Glenn Robinson III added 10 points.

In Cleveland, the Warriors had one of their better shooting nights on the season, with seven players scoring in double-digits on 53.9 % shooting from the field and 51.4 % from beyond the arc.

Golden State earned a much-needed win after dropping 15 of their previous 16 and will now have a chance to extend their winning ways when they play the struggling Washington Wizards next.

Vintage Draymond Green

The Warriors’ former Defensive Player of the Year has had an up-and-down season mixed with injuries and inconsistent play. However, against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Green showed why he’s an All-Star caliber player.

Behind his career-high-tying 16 assists, Green netted a near triple-double against the Cavaliers, adding eight points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Kevon Looney Returns

On top of the win, another positive note for the Golden State Warriors is the return of center, Kevon Looney. Looney’s missed the past 18 games with an abdomen injury and has missed more games due to a neuropathic condition that stunted the start of the season.

Looney played 12 minutes in his return, tallying two points, four rebounds, two steals and a block.

Glen Robinson III says Klay Thompson is preaching patience with losing

Klay Thompson might not be on the floor for the Warriors, but he’s been there for his teammates all season long.

Frustrated.

It’s a word that both Draymond Green and Steve Kerr used to describe their feelings with the 10-36 record that the Warriors have compiled thus far.

Green picked up his 12th technical foul of the season during Wednesday night’s 129-96 loss to the Utah Jazz, and after the contest, Kerr described the losing as “no fun.” Green, who has missed 13 contests this season, is now only four technical fouls away from serving a mandatory suspension.

Although not on the court, both Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson have been fixtures for the young Warriors this season, though, with Glenn Robinson III sharing that he and Thompson had an exchange on the bench during what became the team’s 12th loss in 13 games.

I was talking to Klay a little bit in the fourth quarter on the bench and he just kind of talked to me and told me that, you know, these guys, we got a lot of young guys, we’ve got a lot of guys with almost zero to none experience in this league, you know? and closing out games, and playing tough games and getting through the season, I think that that’s something got to learn and kind of be patient with and remember that.

While it would be easy to criticize the young Warriors for their shortcomings, this season should be viewed as exactly what it is — a gap year while general manager Bob Myers figures out which pieces fit long term and how to get the team back to playing championship basketball.

What is scarier than the Warriors 10-36 record is the fact that next season, they’ll likely have a healthy Stephen Curry, a health Klay Thompson and what is almost certain to be a top-five pick in this year’s NBA Draft. There’s also been speculation that Andre Iguodala will re-sign with the club, as well.

When you look at it that way, it’s pretty easy to understand where Thompson is coming from.

Injury Report: Warriors will be without two starters vs. Orlando Magic

As the Golden State Warriors try and break their 10-game losing streak, the team will be without Draymond Green and Glenn Robinson III against the Magic.

As the Warriors trudge through their longest losing streak of the 2019-20 NBA season, things aren’t getting any easier in Golden State. Core pieces like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevon Looney have all missed almost 30 games this season. It doesn’t stop there, as the hits keep coming to the Golden State rotation.

Jacob Evans III recently entered the NBA’s concussion protocol after a hit to the face against the Dallas Mavericks, and now, two more members of Golden State have been ruled out against the Orlando Magic.

Both Draymond Green and Glenn Robinson III will miss the battle against the Magic due to injury as their team tries to snap a losing streak.

Green has missed nine games this season with a heel and foot injury; he will now be scheduled to miss his tenth game due to a finger sprain. According to Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, Green suffered the finger sprain Thursday against the Denver Nuggets.

Green will join the Warriors contingent on the bench along with Robinson III, who is dealing with an ankle sprain. Robinson III is enjoying a breakout season in Golden State with his best ability being availability during the 2019-20 season.

Robinson III has started every game for Golden State except once this season and has made the most of his opportunity. The Michigan Wolverine product is averaging 12.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, both doubling his career average.

Lessening the blow of losing two starters, the Warriors have opted to bring up two-way contract guard, Ky Bowman. Bowman is nearing the end of his 45-day NBA limit on his two-way contract, but with the Warriors dealing with so many injuries, they have no other choice but to play the guard.

Without Robinson III and Green, Kerr will have to rely heavily on D’Angelo Russell for scoring, and Omari Spellman inside. With the team missing both Looney and Green, Marquese Chriss, who recently rejoined the squad on a two-way contract, could get an increased role.

Warriors veteran says rookie Jordan Poole ‘got his swag back’

Jordan Poole had his third straight double-digit scoring performance and Glenn Robinson III thinks the Warriors’ rookie ‘got his swag back.’

During the Warriors’ 10-game losing streak, a bright spot has been the solid play of the team’s first-round draft pick, Jordan Poole. The Michigan Wolverine product took a quick detour to the Warriors’ G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. However, since being back in San Francisco, Poole has put together one of his best stretches of the season.

Poole has scored double digits in each of his past three games, shooting 43.8 % from the field and 42.9 % from beyond the arc. A massive improvement in comparison to the rookie’s dreadful start to the season.

In a loss to the Denver Nuggets, Poole provided the Warriors an early spark, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to give Golden State the lead in the first quarter. Golden State couldn’t close out the game, but the first-year player’s performance impressed one veteran.

Glenn Robinson III spoke after the game and told the media that he’s happy to see Poole regain his confidence, while dropping a nickname for the rookie.

It’s great to see the young guys playing well — J.P; I told him he got his swag back — I started calling him ‘Microwave’ again, that’s his nickname — I call him ‘Wave.’

Robinson told the media that he knows Poole has what it takes to stick around the NBA, especially when he’s getting the Chase Center’s San Francisco crowd into it.

I’m glad to see able to him play —I know he’s an NBA player —I know he can stick in this league — to see him really find his role and he’s at his best when he keeps it simple knocking down shots — then he could get the crowd into it — that’s what he does best, he’s a great player.

Robinson III discusses the play of Poole at 2:00 in the link below.

With Jacob Evans in the NBA’s concussion protocol, Steve Kerr will have to continue to rely on Poole in the backcourt. With the rookie’s steady play of late, it’s an easy decision.

Injury Report: Without D’Angelo Russell who will step up vs. Pistons?

After colliding with Luka Doncic, D’Angelo Russell is expected to miss his third straight game with a shoulder injury, this time against the Detroit Pistons.

Before the Golden State Warriors lost their last two games, the team was playing its best basketball of the 2019-20 season. They went on their longest winning streak on the year, victorious in four-straight and even stealing their Christmas day matchup against the Houston Rockets.

Two games later, the Warriors have looked more like the team their 9-27 record reflects.

Although the team is still without both Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, in December, Steve Kerr had a reasonably deep rotation for one of the first times all season. Again, the injury bug found its way back into the Warriors locker room.

The Athletic’s Anthony Slater reported D’Angelo Russell (right shoulder contusion) and Kevon Looney (abdominal soreness are still ruled out for the Warriors’ first game of the new year in the Chase Center against the Detroit Pistons.

Detroit will be Russell’s third straight game he’s been held out since colliding with Luka Doncic of the Mavericks. Russell was down on the floor for a significant amount of time after running into Doncic but quickly returned to the game after a short trip to the locker room.

Russell played out the last minutes against the Mavericks; however, the All-Star guard hasn’t been able to suit up for Golden State as the calendar has turned to 2020.

Along with Russell, hobbled big man, Looney is scheduled to miss game number 22 on the season. The UCLA product has dealt with a complicated neuropathy injury and is now dealing with left abdominal soreness. Golden State has been patient with Looney’s injuries as they signed him to a three-year contract worth $15 million over the offseason.

After joining Russell and Looney on the bench for the previous two games, Willie Cauley-Stein is listed as questionable against the Pistons. Cauley-Stein has been dealing with an illness that’s been making its way through the Warriors’ clubhouse.

Although Golden State is expected to be understaffed when Detroit makes its first-ever appearance in Chase Center, the Warriors still have a chance for victory, as the Pistons are dealing with their share of injuries as well.

Rod Beard of The Detroit News reported Blake Griffin (knee), Luke Kennard (knee) and Markieff Morris (foot sprain) are all listed as out on the Detroit injury report.

Without Russell over the past two games, Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III have led the Warriors in scoring. Burks has been one of Golden State’s primary offensive initiators without Russell. Burks has started the past two games while Russell’s been on the bench, scoring 35 total points on 48 % shooting from the field. Burks also added five 3-pointers on six attempts in his last two contests.

Alongside Burks, Robinson III has tallied 41 combined points on an efficient 54.8 % from the field. The former Michigan Wolverine is averaging nearly 36 minutes per game over the last two games, shooting 50 % from beyond the arc, while grabbing nine total boards.

If the injury report doesn’t change by the time things tip-off between the Warriors and the Pistons, expect Kerr to lean heavily on his swingman duo of Burks and Robinson III.

Report: Warriors ‘aiming’ to trade veterans, not D’Angelo Russell

With the NBA trade deadline looming, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the Warriors are “aiming” to trade veteran pieces, not D’Angelo Russell, who they brought to Golden State for a reason.

The minute D’Angelo Russell arrived in Golden State in the 2019 offseason, there’s been speculation if the Warriors would trade the 23-year-old All-Star, or build around him as a featured piece.

Nearly halfway into the 2019-20 season, the Russell question is still being asked. However, clarity is starting to build with how Golden State plans to navigate through the upcoming trade deadline.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Warriors are aiming to “make moves on the edges” that include veteran pieces like Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III.

The Warriors are aiming to make moves on the edges, and several veteran players, such as Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks, have been discussed in deals, according to league sources.

With consistent playing time, both Burks and Robinson have been steady contributors for the Golden State Warriors in 2019. They could each fill roles on contending teams, whether as a scoring threat or a defensive piece.

Burks, in his eighth NBA season, is averaging 15.3 points per game in 29.2 minutes per contest. Burks has come off the bench and started for Steve Kerr’s offense this season. With injuries popping up and down the Golden State roster, Burks has been one of the team’s leading scorers throughout the season, registering nine games scoring 20 points or more.

Robinson III has been one of the Warriors’ most consistent figures throughout the season, starting in every single game except one. The former Michigan Wolverine has been solid defensively, but where he’s impressed is on the offensive end. Robinson’s shooting an efficient 46.2 percent from the field, adding 12.2 points per game, all above his career averages.

If the Warriors decide to trade Burks and Robinson III, the door will open for them to sign their pair of impressive two-way guards, Ky Bowman and Damion Lee, to full-time roster spots.

Charania reported the Warriors aren’t seeking out a deal that involves Russell, unless something “blows them away.”

Rival teams that have talked to the Warriors say that the franchise is not searching for a D’Angelo Russell deal, unless it is one that blows them away.

Charania mentioned that Golden State executives want to see how Russell fits next to a healthy core that features Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Russell is averaging 23.2 points and 6.0 assists per contest on 43.3 percent shooting from the field in his first year with the Warriors. However, Russell’s only had the opportunity to play alongside Curry four times this season due to injury.

As the days tick away till the 2020 NBA trade deadline on February 6, more of the Golden State Warriors’ future roster questions will be answered.

Warriors drop ball on New Year’s Eve, falling 117-113 in San Antonio

The Warriors close out the decade with an overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs, 117-113.

Even with the magic of a new year on the horizon, the AT&T Center is a house of horrors for the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have struggled to find wins in San Antonio, only winning three games in 31 attempts since the opening of the AT&T Center in 2002. With three key players hitting the injury report before tip-off, things weren’t any easier.

D’Angelo Russell (shoulder), Willie Cauley-Stein (illness) and Kevon Looney (abdominal soreness) all didn’t suit up for San Antonio putting the Warriors at a disadvantage from the start.

Even with a shorthanded rotation, Steve Kerr’s squad battled the Spurs down to the win in their last game of the decade, falling in overtime 117-113.

The Warriors took a two-point advantage into halftime, but Patty Mills and LaMarcus Aldridge didn’t go down easy. The Spurs lead going into the final period. However, a valiant effort from rookie Alen Smailagic, Damion Lee and Alec Burks forced the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Warriors’ light rotation started to catch up with them, as they had no answer for San Antonio backcourt of Mills, Dejounte Murray and Bryn Forbes.

Countdown to GR3

After bouncing around the NBA in his young career, Robinson III looks like he’s found a home in Golden State. Robinson continued his career season during the Warriors’ New Year’s Eve date with the Spurs, adding 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field.

Without Russell, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Robinson turned into Golden State’s lead scoring option in San Antonio. The Michigan Wolverine product gave the Warriors a chance to steal a game in San Antonio with his play in the first half. Robinson paced the Warriors in the first half, scoring 18 of his points early.

Lee closes out 2019 making a case for a full-time roster spot

Two-way contract guard is putting in the Warriors in a tough place with his hot play of late. Lee’s solidified himself as the Warriors shooting guard to start 2020, but only has limited time left on his 45-day, two-way contract.

Lee is doing everything he can to make a case for him to stick around with the big club for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, with his game in San Antonio being the perfect example.

Lee tallied 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, adding seven rebounds and two assists. Lee played solid defense down the stretch while hitting a few clutch shots in the fourth quarter, including a three as the play clock expired.

Alec Burks leads Warriors into 2020

Similar to Robinson III, swingman, Burks stepped up with Russell out and got buckets. Burks carried the Warriors down the stretch, nailing several big shots to add to his game high-28 points. The Colorado product was on fire from beyond the arc, hitting four of five shots from long range.

Burks’ stellar play of late could force the Warriors to make a tough decision with the veteran. To start 2020, trading Burks now, or keeping him as a piece for when Curry and Thompson’s return will be a question the Warriors’ front office will have to answer.
