SEC Championship: Remembering Georgia’s 2005 win over LSU

Remembering Georgia’s last SEC Championship win vs LSU…

It’s No. 1 Georgia (12-0) versus No. 14 LSU (9-3) on Saturday for the SEC Championship.

One of the most memorable UGA SEC Championship wins is when star quarterback D.J. Shockley led the Bulldogs to a 34-14 win over the Tigers in 2005.

Shockley finished the game with three total touchdowns and 118 yards on 6/12 passing.

Georgia receiver Sean Bailey racked up 74 yards on two touchdowns, and running back Thomas Brown rushed for 62 yards on 14 carries.

The Bulldogs defense held LSU to 230 yards of offense.

Georgia’s current coaching staff knows this classic game well.

Receiver’s coach Brian McClendon was suited up for the Bulldogs, offensive analyst Mike Bobo was serving as quarterbacks coach and offensive line coach Stacy Searels was serving in the same role for LSU.

Will LSU QB Jayden Daniels play in the SEC Championship?

Daniels was in a walking boot on Monday…

LSU star quarterback Jayden Daniels is currently listed as hopeful ahead of the SEC Championship matchup versus Georgia on Saturday.

Daniels suffered an ankle injury last week in the Tigers’ loss to Texas A&M.

While the junior signal caller only missed a few plays, he was noticeably favoring the ankle.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly said on Monday that Daniels was in a walking boot and noted that indications ‘look pretty good’ on his status for Saturday.

“We’re pretty optimistic about his ability to practice on Tuesday. It wasn’t a high-ankle sprain.”

Daniels is a big reason for the Tigers surprising success this season. The first-year starter has thrown for 2,566 yards and 15 touchdowns with a 68.6 completion percentage this season.

The injured ankle may hamper Daniels in the run game, which has been a major part of the LSU offense.

Daniels has run for 824 yards this season, second in the nation among quarterbacks, and has added 11 touchdowns.

UGAWire will update Daniels status when more updates are given by the LSU staff.

Georgia Bulldogs Ladd McConkey, Christopher Smith talk SEC Championship

‘A lot of guys have not won one.’

No. 1 Georgia (12-0) preparing to face No. 14 LSU (9-3) in the SEC Championship on Saturday in Atlanta

Despite the Bulldogs recent string of dominant play and big wins, Georgia is 1-3 in SEC Championship apperances under Kirby Smart, including a 41-24 loss to Alabama a year ago.

Senior safety Christopher Smith noted the losses and the opportunity for redemption this weekend.

“It’s definitely one of our team goals to be able to win the SEC. I’ve played in this game three times and haven’t been able to win, so hopefully fourth time’s a charm,” Smith said. “We’re going to put in the work and execute the game plan as best as possible to go out there and get the win.”

The majority of UGA’s roster hasn’t experienced a conference championship win as Georgia’s last win came in 2017 in a 28-7 win over Auburn.

Sophomore receiver Ladd McConkey is also one of those players.

“SEC championships are hard to come by like we said. I haven’t won one since we’ve been here. A lot of guys have not won one. They’ve been in it before but haven’t won it. We know how much of a challenge it is to get to this point and how much of a challenge it’s going to be for the rest of the year. But yeah, we just want to go out, take it one game at a time, just put our best foot forward and do what we need to do to get the win.”

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET and will televised on CBS.

Kirby Smart talks SEC Championship: ‘Hard to come by’

Kirby Smart on motivation to win the SEC title…

No. 1 Georgia (12-0) is set to take on No. 11 LSU (9-3) on Saturday in the SEC Championship.

The Bulldogs will try to avenge a 41-24 loss to Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship.

Despite the Bulldogs prowess during the Kirby Smart era since 2016,  including three playoff wins and a national title during this span, the Dawgs have a 1-3 SEC Championship record.

Smart was asked about the motivation to win this year’s conference title in his weekly press conference on Monday.

“It’s more about checking a box. It’s not about last year’s team or a comparison. It’s about that next step and having an opportunity to put a number on the wall that stays there forever. It’s an SEC Championship. You don’t belittle those. Those are hard to come by. They’re what you do what you do for.

Alabama defeated the Bulldogs 26-23 in overtime in 2018, and LSU handed Georgia a 37-10 loss in Atlanta in 2019.

UGA’s last SEC Championship win came in 2017 with a 28-7 win over Auburn.

There’s such a respect, especially in this part of the country, for the Southeastern Conference, that winning a Southeastern Conference championship is extremely impressive for the quality of football and the number of NFL players that come out of our conference. I think our players take a lot of pride in that.”

The Bulldogs are currently -17 point favorites to beat the Tigers.
