Where is Georgia in playoff projections ahead of Week 3

Georgia football could play the same team twice if things go according to this College Football Playoff projection

The Georgia Bulldogs are the No. 1 seed in College Sports Wire’s latest College Football Playoff projections. Georgia is projected to win the SEC.

Georgia is predicted to win the SEC over several other playoff teams including the No. 5 Texas Longhorns, who are projected to be the highest ranked team that is not a conference champion. College Sports Wire predicts that the Alabama Crimson Tide will be the No. 6 seed and the Ole Miss Rebels will be the No. 7 seed.

Georgia would play the winner of the No. 8 Tennessee versus No. 9 USC game at a neutral site if things go according to these playoff predictions. Georgia hosts Tennessee in the regular season on Nov. 16. If Georgia beat the Tennessee-USC winner, then the Bulldogs would likely play Texas or Utah (the No. 4 seed).

The 12 team playoff will be a lot of fun, but right now Georgia is focusing on its next game. The Bulldogs play on the road at the Kentucky Wildcats in their SEC road opener on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.

“That’s a really tough place to play,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart on playing the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 3. “When you go there, as you can see from every time we’ve played there, it’s been really tough. A lot of excitement playing an SEC opponent on the road.”

ESPN’s Rece Davis releases his top 10 CFB rankings after Week 2

ESPN college football expert Rece Davis updates his top 10 rankings after Week 2. Where does he rank the Georgia football?

ESPN “College GameDay” host Rece Davis ranked his top 10 college football teams after Week 2 of the 2024 season. Davis, who was previously quit high on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, has five SEC teams in his top eight including the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs.

Davis is a voter in the Associated Press poll. Georgia continues to be Davis’ top team despite the Bulldogs’ 48-3 win over a lackluster opponent in Tennessee Tech. The rest of Davis’ top three remained unchanged. He still ranks the Texas Longhorns as the No. 3 team in the country despite the Longhorns’ dominant 31-12 win at Michigan. He moved Penn State up one spot to No. 4 and removed Notre Dame from his top 10 to No. 23.

Davis elevated the Tennessee Volunteers into his top five after Tennessee’s impressive 51-10 over the NC State Wolfpack. Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava looks like the real deal through two weeks. The former five-star quarterback recruit has thrown five touchdowns and two interceptions this season as the Volunteers look like contenders in the SEC.

TV, announcers set for Georgia-Kentucky game

Georgia football plays at Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 14 as the Bulldogs look to move to 3-0

The Georgia Bulldogs and Kentucky Wildcats face off in Week 3 of the 2024 college football season. Georgia-Kentucky game, which will be UGA’s first road game and SEC game of the season, is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Georgia is 2-0. The Bulldogs are expected to face former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff, who has started the Wildcats’ first two games of the season. Kentucky is 1-1 and is coming off an embarrassing 31-6 home loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Georgia-Kentucky game will be televised on ABC. The commentators for the contest are Sean McDonough (play-by-play), former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy (analyst) and Molly McGrath (sideline).

“We’ve got to prepare for a tough, really physical game, which is that way every time we play Kentucky,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. Georgia blew Kentucky out of the water at home a season ago in the Dawgs’ 51-13 win over the Wildcats.

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Kentucky has plenty of reasons to be motivated against No. 1 Georgia. The Wildcats are coming off a blowout loss last week and were crushed against Georgia a season ago. Georgia enters the game as heavy favorites, but aside from 2023, Kentucky has player Georgia very well in recent seasons.

Georgia Bulldog player goes No. 1 overall in 2025 NFL mock draft

Four Georgia football standouts go in first round of 2025 NFL mock draft

CBS writer Josh Edwards released his first 2025 NFL mock draft on Thursday (Sept. 5). Edwards has Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Mykel Williams going No. 1 to the New England Patriots in the 2025 NFL draft.

Williams would land in a perfect situation, becoming the leading pass rusher for the Patriots, who just traded Matt Judon to the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots’ only former Georgia Bulldog is center David Andrews, so Williams could be New England’s latest first-round pick from Georgia.

Three other Georgia Bulldogs were selected in the first round of his mock draft, including Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.

Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Carson Beck, 6th, Las Vegas Raiders

With this selection, Beck would reunite with his best pass-catcher ever, tight end Brock Bowers. He would be the highest quarterback taken by the Raiders since JaMarcus Russell, but his situation with the Raiders would be solid. He would have both Bowers and Davante Adams to throw to along with a running game led by former Bulldog Zamir White and a coach that led the Raiders to a 5-4 record as an interim.

Brett Patzke-USA TODAY Sports

Malaki Starks: 23rd, Dallas Cowboys

Starks is the No. 1 safety prospect according to CBS. He’d find himself in a decent landing spot with Dallas. They have a few safeties that are solid, but Starks would be an upgrade.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Jalon Walker: 24th, Green Bay Packers

The Packers already have a bunch of Georgia Bulldogs on their roster, all on the defense. Walker would join linebacker Quay Walker in the linebacker corps, and Green Bay could use more of Georgia’s national championship experience.

SEC recruiting rankings after UGA’s recent decommitment

The SEC has eight of the top nine recruiting classes in the nation. Where does Georgia football’s class of 2025 rank?

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost a commitment from four-star safety recruit Rashad Johnson. The four-star safety flipped his commitment from Georgia to Texas A&M.

Georgia has 21 commitments in the class of 2025 following Johnson’s decision. The Bulldogs have the third-ranked recruiting class in the SEC. Georgia still has a pair of safety commitments: four-star Jaylan Morgan and four-star Todd Robinson (who may also be a running back).

The Texas Longhorns have been surging in recruiting recently. Texas landed commitments from three five-star recruits over the past month or so. Most of the SEC has remained relatively stagnant on the recruiting trail since July.

The Alabama Crimson Tide continue to have the best recruiting class in the SEC in Year 1 of the Kalen DeBoer era. The SEC has eight of the top nine recruiting classes in the country. The SEC is easily the best recruiting conference in college football.

UGA transfer has the No. 11 most tackles in the country

Former UGA football walk-on safety has posted impressive tackle numbers at Jacksonville State

Former Georgia Bulldogs walk-on safety Patrick Taylor has been very productive for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks through two games. Taylor has 24 total tackles to start the season, which is the No. 11 most tackles of any player in the country.

Unfortunately for Taylor and fellow Georgia transfers Clay Webb and Andrew Paul, Jacksonville State is 0-2 to start the season. The Gamecocks have a porous defense that has allowed over 50 points per game of the first two games of the season.

Patrick Taylor joined the Bulldogs as a preferred walk-on in 2020. He is listed at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds and played high school football at Johns Creek in Alpharetta, Georgia. Taylor played in three games and recorded three tackles in 2023 with Georgia, so he is being much more productive with Jacksonville State.

Former Georgia running back Andrew Paul has five carries for seven yards through two games with Jacksonville State, who will look to get back on track in Week 3 against Eastern Michigan.

Reactions to Ladd McConkey’s rookie debut

Former Georgia football star Ladd McConkey juked two defenders for a clutch touchdown in his head-turning Los Angeles Chargers debut

Former Georgia Bulldogs star and Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey left a pair of Las Vegas Raiders defenders in the dust to score his first career touchdown.

McConkey’s clutch touchdown gave Los Angeles a 22-10 lead over the Raiders with 3:40 left in the game. The Chargers went on to win 22-10. McConkey finished the contest as Los Angeles’ leading receiver, but the Chargers’ passing game managed just 140 passing yards.

“The lack of talent in the wide receiver room was evident as players struggled to separate. McConkey led the group with five catches for 39 yards and his first NFL touchdown,” said Gavino Borquez of Chargers Wire.

McConkey got the better of his former Georgia teammate, Brock Bowers, who had a strong debut with a game-high six catches for 58 receiving yards.

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniels is high on McConkey. “Chargers have no speed or burst at WR and I said how I thought Ladd (McConkey) would become their No. 1 from Day 1… Justin (Herbert) trust him more than any of his WRs,” said Daniels via social media.

A look at McConkey’s nifty touchdown

“Rookie Ladd McConkey showed chemistry and trust right away with Justin Herbert in his professional debut,” said NFL analyst Joe O’Leary via social media.

We think Ladd McConkey is the Chargers’ best wide receiver, which is not saying much, but McConkey should post big numbers as long as he stays healthy. His NFL career is off to a great start.

Georgia football star makes national PFF team of the Week 2

A Georgia Bulldog player named to national team of the week distinction by PFF.

Pro Football Focus just released their college football conference and national teams of Week 2. Georgia Bulldog center Drew Bobo earned a spot on the national team thanks to his dominance overall in protection. Bobo didn’t allow any pressures the entire game and delivered some impressive run blocking. Bobo did have a holding penalty on a play where he was pulling to the left, but he had a near perfect day and absolutely earned his distinction

Tate Ratledge was the right guard pick for the SEC team of the week. Ratledge was named as one of the top 50 college players entering the season, and he shined on the right side of the line with Drew Bobo, also allowing zero pressures and showing effectiveness as a pulling guard on running plays.

Georgia had a dominant 48-3 win over Tennessee Tech with impressive performances in almost every aspect. Next week, they’ll be looking to keep their momentum up against the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 14

How UGA transfer QB Brock Vandagriff performed in Week 2

Everything went wrong for former Georgia football quarterback Brock Vandagriff in Kentucky’s ugly 31-6 loss to South Carolina

Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Brock Vandagriff got his second career start for the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 2. Vandagriff and Kentucky suffered a horrendous 31-6 loss at home to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

South Carolina’s defense absolutely dominated Vandagriff and the Kentucky offense. The Wildcats managed just six completions all game. Vandagriff completed just three of 10 passes for 30 yards and he threw a pick-six in the fourth quarter that ended any Kentucky hopes of a win.

Kentucky does not have the best players on the outside, but the Wildcats got whipped up front against South Carolina. The Gamecocks recorded five sacks and forced four Kentucky fumbles.

Vandagriff and fellow Georgia transfer linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson (four tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss) both did not play close to every snap for Kentucky. Vandagriff struggled mightily and was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of Gavin Wimsatt.

Wimsatt was much more effective as a rusher and finished with six carries for 44 yards. However, he went just three of seven for 14 passing yards and threw an interception. Vandagriff finished with nine rushes for negative 29 yards.

“Just error after error,” said Kentucky coach Mark Stoops during the Wildcats’ loss to South Carolina.

Kentucky is 1-1 and has a lot of questions after their disastrous game against South Carolina. “The Gamecocks defense sacked Vandagriff five times and he was under pressure on nearly every dropback. The passing game became non-existent, and the game quickly got away from the Wildcats,” said Vance Meek of UK Wildcats Wire.

It is unclear who Kentucky will start at quarterback in Week 3 against the Georgia Bulldogs, but what is clear is that is Kentucky’s run game is shutdown, then the Wildcats don’t have much of a chance against the No. 1 team in the country.

SEC power rankings after Week 2, Texas’ big win

Georgia and Texas are looking very strong. A new SEC championship contender emerges in our Week 2 SEC power rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs feasted on Football Championship Subdivision opponent Tennessee Tech to move to 2-0.

The SEC’s top game of Week 2 featured a dominant Texas Longhorns’ win at the Michigan Wolverines. Texas snapped a lengthy Michigan home winning streak and looked like a College Football Playoff contender in the process.

Week 2 was a mixed bag for the SEC in nonconference play. The SEC went 3-3 against Power Four opponents. Arkansas nearly upset Oklahoma State on the road but fell in overtime. Tennessee looked like an SEC championship contender in its massive 51-10 win over NC State. Auburn and Mississippi State lost to former Pac-12 programs in one-score games. Oklahoma topped Houston in a narrow win.

SEC football power rankings after Week 2

Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

1. Georgia Bulldogs (2-0)

Quarterback Carson Beck completed five touchdown passes to five wide receivers as the Bulldogs rolled in Week 2. Georgia’s 48-3 win over Tennessee Tech comes a week after the Dawgs’ big season opener against Clemson.

2. Texas Longhorns (2-0)

We liked the Texas Longhorns’ chances at Michigan, and they proved us right. Texas’ 31-12 win over Michigan looks a little bit closer than the game was in reality. Texas held a 24-3 halftime lead and did not let up.

3. Tennessee Volunteers (2-0)

Not expecting to see quarterback Nico Iamaleava and Tennessee ranked this highly? The Volunteers demolished NC State, 51-10, and have a win over a Power Four opponent, which is something their SEC power rankings cohorts can’t claim.

4. Ole Miss Rebels (2-0)

Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart posted another monster game against weak competition. Dart passed for 377 yards and one touchdown in the Rebels’ 52-3 win over Middle Tennessee. The Rebels face an easy nonconference schedule over the first four weeks of the season.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe and the Alabama offense must have dominated in their 42-16 win over South Florida, right? Wrong. The Crimson Tide held a 21-16 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before they scored three straight touchdowns.

6. Missouri Tigers (2-0)

Missouri has back-to-back shut out wins over weak competition, but that is a good sign for the Tigers’ defense. Missouri beat Buffalo 38-0 in Week 2, but faces a Power Four foe, Boston College, in Week 3.

7. Oklahoma Sooners (2-0)

Oklahoma did not look like world-beaters in their 16-12 win over Houston, but the Sooners are 2-0 and have a win over a Power Four opponent.

8. LSU Tigers (1-1)

The LSU Tigers bounced back in Week 2 with a 44-21 win over Nicholls State. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier helped the Tigers get back on track with a six touchdown performance after LSU’s Week 1 loss to USC.

9. South Carolina Gamecocks (2-0)

A week after getting outgained by Old Dominion, South Carolina topped Kentucky, 31-6. The Gamecocks still have offensive questions, but their defense came to play against Kentucky, which totaled 183 yards and averaged less than three yards per play.

10. Vanderbilt Commodores (2-0)

Vanderbilt is probably ranked too high here, but it is 2-0 and has a Power Four win (in Week 1, Virginia Tech). The Commodores are out of the cellar and took care of business in a 55-0 win over Alcorn State.

11. Arkansas Razorbacks (1-1)

Quarterback Talen Green continues to look good, but Arkansas fell in overtime, 39-31, to Oklahoma State. The Razorbacks held a 21-7 halftime lead on the road, but could not seal the deal.

12. Texas A&M Aggies (1-1)

Texas A&M was back on track with a 52-10 win over McNeese. The Aggies’ Week 1 loss to Notre Dame looks worse now that Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois.

13. Auburn Tigers (1-1)

Auburn’s 21-14 home loss to California hurts. Quarterback Payton Thorne threw four interceptions in a rough outing. Auburn’s rushing attack remains the strength of their offense.

14. Florida Gators (1-1)

Florida dominated Samford, 45-7, in what may be the Gators’ only easy game all season. D.J. Lagway passed for 457 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

15. Kentucky Wildcats (1-1)

Yikes! Kentucky played well enough defensively, but suffered a brutal 31-6 loss to a South Carolina team with a lot of question marks. Not ideal when you consider the Wildcats host Georgia in Week 3.

16. Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-1)

Mississippi State nearly completed a comeback against Arizona State, but came up short in a 30-23 road loss.
