Report: Giants will not retain assistants Bill McGovern, Gary Emanuel

The New York Giants will not retain assistant coaches Bill McGovern or Gary Emanuel.

The New York Giants will keep special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert on staff, but the same can not be said for linebackers coach Bill McGovern or defensive line coach Gary Emanuel.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports that both McGovern and Emanuel will not be back in 2020.

Emanuel joined the Giants in 2018 under incoming head coach Pat Shurmur. He had previously coached the defensive line in both Indianapolis and San Francisco, in addition to various other college roles.

With news that the Giants had hired Freddie Roach to coach their defensive line, it was inevitable that Emanuel be shown the door.

Unlike Emanuel, McGovern had been on staff in East Rutherford since 2016, joining the team under then-head coach Ben McAdoo. He remained in that role through the transition to Shurmur, but could not survive another head coaching/staff change.

Prior to joining the Giants, McGovern was an outside linebackers coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
