This game will be a battle of 2 teams that lean heavily on their quarterbacks.

Fresno State QB Jake Haener, a transfer from Washington early in his career, has shown toughness and ability throughout the past 2 seasons with the Bulldogs. From being carted off the field in Sept., he has shown the perseverance to come back and battle with his teammates.

This was shown once again in the Bulldogs’ 28-16 victory over Boise State in the Mountain West championship game. A win that not only got them into this game but also avenged an early season 20-point loss to the same Broncos team.

Washington State QB Cam Ward, a transfer from Incarnate Word University, has led the team to a 7-5 record while competing in the loaded Pac-12 conference. A 51-33 loss to the No.12 Washington Huskies to wrap up the season on Nov. 27 has left a bitter taste in the mouth of the Cougars and they will look to gain retribution Saturday.

Ward came to Washington State with his former head coach Eric Morris as offensive coordinator but will now have to finish his season and career without Morris who just accepted the job as coach of North Texas University. Ward finished the season with 3,094 passing yards, 23 TDs and 8 INTs.

Moneyline

BET WASHINGTON STATE (+160).

This will be a difficult game for both teams. Washington State has had some difficulties this season and losing both coordinators before this game also will make things difficult.

Despite this, I like Washington State to win outright making the moneyline a more attractive wager than the spread. Haener is a wonderful player for Fresno State, but he cannot do it alone. I feel like the Cougars’ offense will be just a bit too much for the Bulldogs to handle, so give me WASHINGTON STATE (+160).

Against the spread

PASS.

With the feeling being that the Cougars will win, I would rather make a wager on the moneyline. The Pac-12 is a better conference than the Mountain West and Washington State has been a little more tested than Fresno State throughout the season.

Over/Under

BET OVER 53 (-109).

The outcome depends on the motivation of each team in the game in many bowl games. Neither of these two teams will have opt-outs to worry about and both teams still are humble enough to be happy about being in a bowl game.

Haener will want to finish his career with a win, and the Bulldogs will have to put up quite a few points to outduel the Cougars. This number seems a bit too low for this game and I see it getting to 60. OVER 53 (-109) is my favorite play.

Both teams got off to slow starts this season before finishing strong.

Boise State, after a loss to UTEP left it 2-2, fired offensive coordinator Tim Plough and QB Hank Bachmeier followed him out the door when he decided to transfer mid-season. The Broncos went 7-1 after the changes, the only blemish a 31-28 non-conference loss to BYU. The Broncos scored 34.6 points per game in conference while allowing just 14.25 points.

Fresno State, under new/old coach Jeff Tedford, made it back to the MWC title game despite a 1-4 start. The Bulldogs have won 7 straight conference games, averaging 34.1 points and allowing just 18.

This is a rematch of an early season game. The only loss in conference for Fresno State was 40-20 to Boise State on Oct. 8. The Broncos were 10.5-point favorites in that game. The spread is not as high in this game and both teams are different then they were in that game.

LEAN BOISE STATE -160.

This is just a lean as I like Boise State ATS in this game. If you are hesitant to take the spread though, -160 is not too out of line to make a wager and it is a nice addition to a parlay also.

Against the spread

BET BOISE STATE -3 (-118).

If you wager on the ML, do not also wager on this line. But I like this line and think the Broncos will win by more than this number.

The Mountain West, as a smaller conference, plays its championship game at the higher-seeded home field. That makes this a true advantage for Boise State in this game. This also shows that Vegas thinks these teams are about even on a neutral site. I do not agree. Boise State -3 (-118) is my favorite play.

Over/Under

BET OVER 54.5 (-111)

Both teams have allowed under 18 points per game in conference this season. But in the last meeting between the teams this season, the Broncos scored 40 and the Bulldogs got to 20. This would be well over the number of 54.5 given here. While both defenses have gotten better, so have both offenses and this number seems a few points too low. If it stays Under 55, I still like it. Once it hits 56, I would stay away or play the Under.

The market is overrating USC.

The Trojans should win, but the number is too high as a result of USC once again being a talking point on national TV. They have gone 2-0 ATS to open the season, but this spread is inflated vs. a Fresno State team that is being undervalued because of a last-second defeat.

Riley is known as an offensive coach and he has turned around USC’s program in 1 year. However, this total is an overreaction to the recent success. The number is too high for a game that will feature a motivated Fresno State defense coming off of a bad loss.

Fresno State is coming off a 61-59 home loss to Wyoming Sunday as a 5-point favorite. FSU’s offense had been on the upswing prior to the upset. The Bulldogs averaged 70.0 points per game in going 6-2 over their previous eight contests, and that’s usually plenty with what Fresno brings to the table defensively. The Bulldogs yield just 57.6 PPG (fifth NCAA-I).

Colorado State had 16 wins in its first 17 games but was then bounced in a pair of Mountain West games in late January. The Rams have come back to win back-to-back games so far in February but still find themselves in third place in the circuit standings, looking up at Wyoming and Boise State.

CSU leads the MWC in scoring (77.5 PPG), but the Rams’ 82 points in their last game (Tuesday at Nevada) marked their most since Dec. 1.

Colorado State is coming off a hard-fought win and could well be caught looking ahead to a big game against Boise State Sunday. However, both teams have some warts that aren’t fully evident in their records and they really both fit as decent fade candidates in the near future.

But peg FRESNO STATE (+220) as being a decent price and perhaps worthy of some partial-unit attention.

Against the spread

FRESNO STATE +6.5 (-120) is worth a small lean.

Over/Under

The season-record Unders for these teams is 25-17.

The Under is 6-1 in the Rams’ last seven games against foes playing .600 basketball and has hit in two of the last three head-to-head meetings.

UTEP faltered after starting its season 6-1. The Miners are 1-4 since Oct. 30. Penalties have been a problem for the Miners. UTEP has been tagged with 10-plus flags in three of its last five games. The Miners’ 8.5 penalties per game rank 125th in the nation.

The Bulldogs are on more of a surge coming into this mid-December bowl tilt. Fresno State is 5-1 over its last six games; four of those wins have been by multiple scores. Senior QB Jake Haener leads a Fresno State offense that ranks ninth in the nation in passing yards (330.1 per game). Haener has completed 67.5% of his passes for 3,810 yards; he has thrown 32 touchdown passes against nine interceptions.

Haener has become a question mark for this one, and that has this potential play on hold. The Bulldog quarterback has been in and out of the transfer portal, and his status is unclear moving into this game.

There is still no word on if Haener will play, but the team has welcomed him back with open arms. STEER CLEAR for now, but monitor the Haener news and be ready to pounce.

Over/Under

Fresno struggles in preventing big pass plays; the Miners excel in cranking those out. On a good-weather day in Albuquerque, look for the offenses to have more say than what the public is expecting.

PASS on the money line.

I don’t quite envision an upset, but Fresno State backers should still be reluctant to take -290 odds.

Against the spread

BET on FRESNO STATE -7.5 (-102) was it’s getting the less juice, yet the Bulldogs appear to be the better side.

San Jose’s defense may not be able to stop the passing game as it ranks just 63rd in the county in passing yards allowed per game with 225.9.

Fresno State has the way more impressive schedule as well, taking down San Diego State by 10, UCLA by 3 and losing to Oregon by just 7.

Given fans should be as confident in what San Jose’s 5-6 record shows, I’d back the team that’s looked better and should be able to move the ball with ease.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the OVER 52.5 (-107) as San Jose’s offense can also pass at a capable rate, and its turnovers have been limited this season.

Hanging onto the ball is crucial to both staying in games and racking up the points and both teams do a good job with that and have recorded 12 or fewer turnovers.

Both defenses give up around 21 points per game, yet Fresno State’s pace-pushing offense puts up 33 points per game.

Given this should be a high-volume game in terms of passing, I’d lean towards the over for a small unit.

The Aztecs scratched out a 20-14 win at Air Force as three-point ‘dogs, improving to 5-1 ATS across the past six games overall. The Under is 3-0 in the past three contests with San Diego State allowing just 11.3 points per game (PPG) in those games.

Nevada totes a three-game win streak into Bulldog Stadium. The Wolfpack sport a pass-first offense: UN is third in the nation in passing with 363.3 yards per game (YPG) and 128th in rushing with 85.3 YPG. Nevada has been subpar in defending the pass and has tended to get in some high-scoring pass-fests. The Over is 4-2 in the Wolfpack’s six games.

Fresno Sate is back home after two straight road games — at Hawaii and Wyoming — which were split by a bye week. The Bulldogs are 14-3 straight-up and 9-7-1 against the spread over their last 17 games at Bulldog Stadium. FSU also shows up with a pass-first offense that ranks seventh in the nation with 353.1 YPG, but the Bulldogs have also been effective in shutting down the aerial game.

Against the spread

The Bulldogs managed 599 total yards and held a 30-14 edge in first downs in last year’s meeting in December, but still lost 37-26.

Look for some push-back in a revenge game with MWC West implications. Nevada has been a turnover beneficiary in a couple games that look good on the surface of its resume. The Wolfpack were a plus-5 last week at Hawaii; they were a plus-3 in an earlier win over Boise State.

FSU’s defense and ability to be more diverse on offense will be keys in this one. Nevada can get to the quarterback, so Fresno will want to run a bit to keep the Wolfpack off balance.

BACK THE BULLDOGS -3.5 (-110).

Over/Under

The last seven times the Bulldogs have been favored at home, the Over has gone 5-2.

Peg the Wolfpack’s defensive-stop surface numbers as being a bit too generous, while the opposite holds true for Fresno State’s offensive numbers. Both units have some analytic indicators that point to more scoring in this one.

Fresno State played a pair of ranked Pac-12 teams tough last month, losing 31-24 at Oregon and then defeating UCLA 40-37. The victory over the Bruins was the middle of three straight wins for the Bulldogs. That run came to an end Oct. 2 at Hawaii with a disappointing 27-24 setback. FSU was idle last week.

The Cowboys had won four straight games, albeit against a weak schedule, before tasting defeat last week. Wyoming went just 3-for-12 on third downs and amassed just 257 total yards in a 24-14 loss at Air Force. The Cowboys were outscored, 10-0, in the second half of that game.

Against the spread

Wyoming is 8-3 ATS over its last 11 home games. Fresno State is 1-4 ATS over its last five road games.

FSU is coming off a road game at Hawaii and then a bye week. Look for the Cowboys to keep this one close.

FRESNO STATE -10.5 (-115) are a good bet to bounce back after a surprisingly close shave against UNLV last week. The Bulldogs have a tremendous offense with QB Jake Haener, WR Jalen Cropper, RB Ronnie Rivers, etc.
