Square Enix announces Forspoken prequel DLC release date

The first Forspoken DLC is coming up soon, and Square Enix said it’s a prequel story set decades before Frey’s tale begins

The first Forspoken DLC is coming up soon, and Square Enix said it’s a prequel story set decades before Frey’s tale begins. The DLC is called In Tanta We Trust and launches on May 26, 2023, for PS5 and PC. Those who own the RPG’s digital deluxe version will automatically have the expansion unlock on May 23, 2023, while everyone else will have to buy it separately. Square Enix didn’t say how much it will cost.

As you’d expect from the title, the DLC centers on the Tantas, Athia’s former rulers. Frey still joins in, though. Square Enix said she follows a mysterious voice and ends up 25 years in the past, joining Tanta Cinta and Athia’s other rulers in the Battle of Rheddig, which, if you’ve played the base game already, you might remember as the battle where the Tantas lost their minds. No bonus points for guessing how this adventure ends.

Frey also gains new magic powers to unleash in battle alongside Tanta Cinta and, seemingly, new parkour abilities as well.

“Scale to new heights in unique, vertically-designed environments with Frey’s honed magic-enhanced parkour skills,” Square Enix said in the press release announcing the DLC.

Forspoken is available now on PS5 and PC via Steam.

Forspoken developer will merge with Square Enix

The Luminous Productions team will no longer be an independent entity.

Luminous Productions, the studio behind Forspoken, will merge into Square Enix on May 1, 2023.

The announcement came by way of a tweet on Monday from the official Luminous Productions account, which reassures fans that the people within the studio will remain part of Square Enix and continue working on Forspoken’s upcoming In Tanta We Trust DLC.

“We appreciate you taking this journey with us and look forward to continuing to create new entertainment and experiences as a part of the Square Enix Family,” reads the statement.

As for why this is happening, Square Enix went on to elaborate in a press release.

“The merger is part of the Company’s efforts to further bolster the competitive prowess of the Group’s development studios, a goal set forth under its current medium-term business strategy,” Square Enix said. “Square Enix has developed numerous AAA high-definition (HD) games and possesses a wealth of intellectual property (IP) and content. Luminous Productions Co., Ltd. is meanwhile equipped not only with AAA title development capabilities but also technical expertise in areas such as game engine development. Combining the two entities will further enhance the Group’s ability to develop HD games.”

While Forspoken was Luminous Productions’ most recent effort, the studio also is responsible for Final Fantasy 15 – which remains the most recent mainline entry until Final Fantasy 16 comes out later this year.

Be careful: Forspoken spoilers are all over social media

Story and plot details for Square Enix’s highly anticipated RPG are floating around online.

If you’re one of the many people looking forward to Forspoken – be warned: massive spoilers are already floating around on YouTube, Twitter, and other social media platforms ahead of launch. We’re not going into the specifics here – basically, consider this a friendly heads-up for anyone hoping to go into Forspoken spoiler free.

Yes, several key moments from Forspoken have leaked online – including the final boss and ending. Publisher Square Enix is already taking down most of the egregious spoilers off of YouTube and Reddit, but there are still random tweets and forum posts containing specific story details. Basically, be careful looking the game up online.

Forspoken is the second game from Luminous Productions, which previously brought us Final Fantasy XV in 2016. Recent promotional trailers highlight Forspoken’s “magical parkour” traversal gameplay and stylish third-person combat. There are some fairly big names behind it as well, like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-writer Gary Whitta and former Uncharted trilogy creative director Amy Hennig.

If that sounds appealing, then keep an eye out when Forspoken finally launches for PS5 and PC on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023. Square Enix initially delayed the game to October 2022, then pushed it again to January 2023.

New Forspoken trailer spotlights the upcoming PS5 game’s parkour

Frey floats, flies, and flings in the latest Forspoken trailer thanks to her magic parkour abilities in Square Enix’s open-world RPG

Sony and Square Enix released a new Forspoken trailer highlighting some of Frey’s fantastical parkour abilities in the upcoming PS5 game. She’ll use and enhance these abilities not just to traverse Athia’s vast expanse, but to get an edge in combat as well.

Frey eventually gains an expansive parkour repertoire, but Flow is her fundamental ability. This skill lets her move with speed and surmount obstacles, so long as her stamina holds. Rush helps Frey move even faster during Flow while reducing the ability’s stamina cost, and Shimmy sees Frey launch herself up and forward, making it easier to reach high places and avoid dangers.

Float is pretty self-explanatory and seems useful, given the abundance of deadly cliffs and high places in Athia.

In combat, Frey can use Zip to anchor a tether at a targeted location and fly over to it quickly, making it perfect for getting the drop on an unsuspecting foe or quickly fleeing danger.

And if that’s not enough magical high-flying movements for you, Frey also has Soar, which sees her rise into the air, and Scale, where she creates phantom footholds that help her climb any obstacle.

You can upgrade all these abilities to bring out their full potential and reduce Frey’s stamina cost.

Forspoken launches Jan. 24, 2023, for PS5 and PC following a delay that pushed it out of 2022.

Forspoken’s latest trailer is out, and Twitter is dunking on it hard

Some cliché Marvel-like dialogue in Forspoken’s new teaser is sending people into a meme-fueled frenzy.

So Forspoken‘s new trailer is out, and it’s going over freaking terribly on social media. Memes are just something we do now, it seems.

On Tuesday, Square Enix released a short teaser for Forspoken. Protagonist Frey Holland narrates it, quickly recounting her exploits in some far-off mythical land — and everyone is clowning the dialogue. The delivery is akin to that Joss Wheadon-like dialogue that is in virtually every Marvel Cinematic Universe film these days, where most lines are teeming with jokey lines that become rather grating after a while.

Before we go any further, please watch the video for yourself below. Context is key and all that.

Of course, these sorts of quips don’t bother everyone. Let’s face it: an overwhelming majority of blockbuster movies over the past decade were marketed like this, so it’s not unprecedented. The game itself might be utterly devoid of this sort of Avengers-like speak, too; we won’t know until Forspoken comes out next year. But careful examination rarely stops the meme train from pulling up to the station.

As you might expect, Twitter is currently awash in parodies for this trailer. There are Doom, Yakuza, God of War, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater variants, among many others. We’ve gathered some of the funniest reactions, remixes, and cheeky edits below.

Forspoken has been delayed until 2023

The upcoming action-RPG from Square Enix, has been delayed again.

Forspoken, an upcoming action-RPG published by Square Enix, has been delayed until Jan. 24, 2023.

This is the second delay for the upcoming triple-A title, which was originally intended to launch on May 24, 2022. However, development seemed to be taking longer than intended and the game was first delayed until Oct. 11, 2022. This time the developer, Luminous Productions, claims that the game is now on schedule. The current delay is likely a business decision.

A tweet released by Forspoken’s official Twitter account states:

“As a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to Jan. 24, 2023. All game elements are now complete, and development is in its final polishing stage.”

[mm-video type=video id=01fpt0cv0xkn68agq422 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fpt0cv0xkn68agq422/01fpt0cv0xkn68agq422-a139e06db8c080c9edb95e497ab1d95e.jpg]

The statement goes on to say that more information about Forspoken will be released this Summer. This is likely further gameplay footage or a new trailer.

It is likely that as a new property, Luminous Productions moved the date to prevent it from coinciding with a number of big releases coming this holiday season. Nintendo announced a large number of games to be released towards the end of the year in its Partner Showcase. Persona 5 Royal, NieR: Automata, and Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope will all be released for Nintendo Switch in October.

Square Enix announced Havestella coming to Switch on Nov. 4 and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will launch on Nov. 18 While Sonic Frontiers has no set release date, it is also coming to all platforms before the end of the year. Sony has also announced that the long-awaited God of War Ragnarök will launch Nov. 9.

As the holiday release schedule is already tightly packed, it is likely that the ‘key partners’ the statement refers to, wanted Forspoken to be delayed in order for it to be released when there will be less competition. Although the game is written by Amy Hennig, the creator of Uncharted, it is not based on any previous works, and therefore it would be seen as risky to release during a busy period.

Forspoken has been delayed

The RPG from Luminous Productions isn’t come out until fall now.

Forspoken, the new RPG from Luminous Productions, isn’t coming out this spring anymore.

On Monday, Luminous Productions announced that Forspoken will not come out until Oct. 11, 2022, five months after the original spring date.

“Our vision for this exciting new IP is to deliver a game world and hero that gamers across the globe will want to experience for years to come, so getting it right is extremely important to us,” Luminous Productions said on Twitter. “To that end, during the next few months, we will focus all of our efforts on polishing the game can wait for you to experience Frey’s journey this fall.”

The statement indeed suggests technical issues might be the reason for Forspoken’s delay, though all we can do is speculate without any concrete details. Given that the game is only on PS5 and PC, one would hope that the extra horsepower will eventually smooth any performance issues out.

While Forspoken is technically the debut effort from Luminous productions, the studio was primarily responsible for Final Fantasy 15. Star Wars Rogue One writer Gary Whitta also came up with much of Forspoken’s world and characters.

Forspoken preview – magical parkour game is wonderfully weird

It’s strange, but good.

I love weird stuff. Spider-legged sharks in Junji Ito artwork, cherry pie being the enemy of electricity in Twin Peaks, and ketchup chips — yes, Canadians deep-fry potato slices, cover them in artificial tomato dust, and sell them at corner stores. Anything that yields a good belly laugh or cocked brow is good by me.

Forspoken is pretty damn weird.

It may not seem so from a glance, though. During my hands-off preview with Forspoken, the opening was more like a CW drama than any of the aforementioned oddities. Frey Holland, the protagonist, is a New Yorker in her early 20s who wants nothing more than to get the hell out of dodge so she might get a fresh crack at life. She’s the kind of person you’d never expect to have demons since she’s such a people pleaser. Making room erupt in laughter comes naturally to her. I was immediately impressed with how startlingly human Frey’s humble beginnings are in Forspoken.

[mm-video type=video id=01fpt0cv0xkn68agq422 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fpt0cv0xkn68agq422/01fpt0cv0xkn68agq422-a139e06db8c080c9edb95e497ab1d95e.jpg]

Then suddenly, Frey is doing quadruple backflips up a mountain engulfed in purple lightning in the harsh fantasy world of Athia. In this preview session, there’s no explanation as to how she got there.

That sharp tonal shift left me stunned. It was as if this was secretly a Drakengard follow-up all along. Raio Mitsuno, creative director on Forspoken, tells me that contrast is integral to the story.

“One of our core concepts when we first started this project is this idea of duality,” Mitsuno says. “We created a fantasy world filled with magic, but we want players to experience through the lens of a modern perspective. And that’s where Frey comes in. She’s a reflection of ourselves, of how we would react in this situation.”

That sentiment certainly holds up, considering Frey spends a good chunk of the time cursing like a sailor at all the otherworldly elements around her, which is precisely how I would react. You see, an evil power clings to the air in Athia, turning man and beast alike into monsters should they take enough of it in. Frey, however, is not only immune to these effects — she’s inexplicably able to wield it as a means to explore the vast open-world landscapes in Athia. Takefumi Terada, co-director of Forspoken, has a curious name for Frey’s unique talents.

“Magical parkour,” Terada says. “It allows for exhilarating, high-speed traversal through terrain. The fantasy aspect is what makes it unique. It builds on the player’s imagination when scaling a vertical cliffside or darting around. There’s a lot of additional skills that will expand on Frey’s abilities that we haven’t shown yet too.”

Straight away, it’s clear that Forspoken’s world is overflowing with ambition, arguably more so than Luminous Production’s prior effort, Final Fantasy 15. As someone who was left wanting more from that game’s curtain call, I was surprised how candid the team was about Final Fantasy 15’s less-than-glowing reception and the lengths they’ve gone to ensure Forspoken doesn’t follow a similar path.

“After Final Fantasy 15 came out, we looked at our weaknesses, and a common criticism was on the narrative end of things on that game,” Mitsuno explains. “For our next project, we wanted to have global appeal, and we thought the best way to do that is to get some creative minds from the west that have worked on so many fantastic projects of their own to write this kind of story together.”

Luminous Productions certainly spared no expense in this regard, enlisting the talents of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-writer Gary Whitta and the original Uncharted trilogy’s creative director Amy Hennig during pre-production. Whitta came up with Forpoken’s original narrative concept, while Hennig ensured the story complimented the gameplay. Neither Whitta nor Hennig are still actively working on Forspoken, though, as lead writing duties now fall on the shoulders of Allison Rymer (Chasing Life, Shadowhunters) and Todd Stashwick. Working with external parties was new for Luminous Productions, but Mitsuno is happy with the result.

“We’ve always worked with domestic staff, whether it’s internal or external, so working with a western team was a new thing for us,” Mitsuno says. “But having some fantastic people like Todd, Allison, and even going back to Amy Hennig and Gary Whitta — we have some amazing talent putting their thoughts and ideas into the story.”

Despite the change in who was penning the story, combat in Forspoken leaves little doubt that this is a Luminous Productions title. For example, Frey has loads of gap-closing abilities during combat that look like Final Fantasy 15’s Noctis gave her warp-strike pointers on a Sunday afternoon. The parallels are uncanny, though Terada claims it wasn’t necessarily intentional.

“So we didn’t set out to create a combat system that was a direct evolution from Final Fantasy 15,” Terada explains. “I’ve seen some comments from people noting similarities between the two games, but none of it was intentional on our part. We took a lot of care with UI designs and the general feel of the magic combat system that’s unique to Forspoken.”

That’s by no means the only bit of online speculation Luminous Productions have noticed either. The tonal contrast between reality and fantasy pervades Forspoken’s trailers, which has led to some referring to it as Final Fantasy meets Life Is Strange. Maybe it’s simply because Frey is a young girl with superpowers that drops the occasional somewhat corny one-liner, but in any case, Mitsuno isn’t quite sure what to make of the analogy.

“I wouldn’t say it’s right or wrong,” Mitsuno explains. “Obviously, with us having worked on Final Fantasy, there’s probably always going to be a connection that people make to it. But we’re carving our own path with Forspoken in terms of the tone and storyline. I think when people finally play the game, it’s going to feel fresh and not what they were expecting from our team.”

Were it not for how unapologetically bizarre Forspoken is, it likely would’ve never materialized as a blip on my radar. I’m not confident its strange tone is intentional or just the result missing context, but in any case, I think Frey’s story will be one worth checking out when it comes out for PS5 and PC on May 24, 2022.

Forspoken’s Game Awards trailer reveals May 24, 2022 release date

Magical parkour.

Forspoken, the next RPG from Luminous Productions, got a new trailer at The Game Awards.

Initially revealed in 2020 under the moniker of “Project Athia,” Forspoken is a narrative-driven RPG from the studio that brought us Final Fantasy XV. The story is a smidge more bizarre than a typical Square Enix endeavor (if you can believe that). Frey Holland, the protagonist, is a New York City native that’s somehow found herself in the fantasy world of Athia. Don’t worry, though. A talking bracelet playfully named Cuff is there to keep her company. See what I mean about being weird?

There’s a heavy emphasis on free-flowing, magically-infused parkour gameplay across a massive (potentially) open world, which you can see snippets of in the trailer below.

Interestingly, there’s a lot of big-name western creatives working on Forspoken. Gray Witta, best known for writing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, serves as story lead. While Amy Henning, co-creator of the Uncharted series, is also working on the script. Bear McCreary, known for composing God of War (2018), and Garry Schyman of BioShock fame, are both writing music on Forspoken. So yeah, it’s an all-star team.

Forspoken will launch for PS5 and PC on May 24, 2022.
