ESPN playoff predictor updates top teams’ chances of making the College Football Playoff. Where is Ohio State?

Ohio State’s College Football Playoff odds dropped a little when comparing against other teams with the top ten chances of making the field. #GoBucks #CFBPlayoff

We are on the doorstep of a couple of very important weeks in the 2023 college football season. There’s just two weeks of regular-season games and then the conference championship games before we get some tasty bowl and College Football Playoff matchups.

And while we are one week away from a very big week, there’s still five Power Five teams unbeaten. Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Washington who seemingly have the inside track on making that four-team playoff. Behind them, Oregon, Texas and Alabama are ready to pounce should any above them stumble.

But that’s bound to change as we head down the stretch with some head-to-head matchups and quality opponents coming up.

We like to follow ESPN to see what its playoff predictor” says about the teams that have the best change to get into all of the fun, and that model has been updated heading into Week 12. Of course, we’re interested in where Ohio State lands, but we’ve also got our attention focused on the other teams that could impact the Buckeyes’ chances of making the very last, four-team version of the College Football Playoff.

Here’s a look at the teams that have the best chance of making the CFP and where Ohio State lands as we enter the home stretch in Week 12. We count down the top 10 teams from the least to greatest chance of heading to New Orleans or Pasadena.

ESPN predicts what teams will make College Football Playoff ahead of Week 11. Where is Ohio State?

Do you like where Ohio State is in ESPN’s Playoff Predictor heading into Week 11?

It’s been a bit of a slow news day on Friday (well, not really). But hey, the games in college football will go on despite the bomb that dropped of Jim Harbaugh being suspended by the Big Ten as a result of the sign-stealing saga.

It just so happens that this week is full of some significant and intriguing games, including the big one in Happy Valley between Michigan and Penn State. It’ll be a pretty important week to continue to write the story of which teams make the College Football Playoff. In fact, right now, five — Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Washington — are the only undefeated Power Five teams. They have the inside track on making that four-team playoff.

But that’s bound to change as we head down the stretch with some head-to-head matchups and quality opponents coming up.

ESPN updates Ohio State, other contenders chances of making CFP after Week 4. Things are looking up.

Where do Ohio State and other contenders stand with their chances of making the College Football Playoff after Week 4? Things got more optimistic for the Buckeyes after last week. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team looks to be getting its act together after some first-game mild struggles against Notre Dame — at least offensively.

Since then, OSU is averaging just over 60 points and 613 yards of total offense. I read in a college football for dummies book that those numbers are pretty good. And while the defense has given up a few big plays, when the first unit is in there, there is noticeable improvement and ability, something Ohio State needs if it wants to make the College Football Playoff and have a shot at being the last team standing at the end.

Speaking of that, ESPN likes to keep track of FBS college football teams and their chances of making it into the CFP after every week of action is complete. Ohio State started out well over an 80% chance in the preseason, but dipped a bit after the game with Toledo for reasons we’ll never know. I mean, we love the ESPN Allstate Playoff Predictor, but who knows what kind of special ingredients go into its metrics and rating casserole that determine these sorts of things?

Regardless, though the Buckeyes’ chances of dropped to 67% according to the ESPN sorcery last week, they are back up after the public flogging administered to Wisconsin this past week, in combination with the results we saw with other teams across the country.

Here is where Ohio State and other playoff contenders stand with their chances of making the College Football Playoff after Week 4 according to the ESPN Playoff Predictor.

Note: ESPN only publishes chances for teams that have a greater than 2% chance of being a part of all the fun. Because of that, there are only 15 teams represented this week.

Ohio State’s playoff chances drop according to ESPN Playoff Predictor after Week 3

The ESPN Allstate Playoff Predictor has lowered the chances of Ohio State making the College Football Playoff. See where things stand. #GoBucks

It sure looks like Ohio State is a team that’s starting to hit its stride right as the Big Ten season gets ready to get going full force. After a perceived slow start offensively, quarterback C.J. Stroud and the offense are now cooking with scarlet and gray gas after a few weeks under their belt.

Ohio State sits at 3-0 with the Wisconsin Badgers coming to town this weekend, and as long as the Buckeyes win out, you can bet that they’ll be in the College Football Playoff. Lose though, and all bets are off.

At that point, it’s not just what OSU does, but the rest of the country as well. To try and figure it all out, ESPN likes to flaunt its Allstate Playoff Predictor and updates the odds of college football teams making the CFP after each week’s set of games.

The Buckeyes were hovering around an 80% chance of making the playoffs from the preseason through last week’s game against Toledo, but now their chances have dropped. Here is a list of the top 13 teams with at least a 2% chance of making the College Football Playoff, with the new percentage of OSU getting in.

You can play around with different scenarios like winning out, having one-loss and still winning the conference and more for all the teams if you’d like by visiting ESPN and selecting the team you’d like to play around with.

ESPN updates its College Football Playoff chances after Week 2. Where is Ohio State?

ESPN has updated its College Football Playoff Predictor after Week 2 of the season. Where does Ohio State land now? #GoBucks

At a program like Ohio State, it’s a goal every year to reach the pinnacle of the sport of college football. The CFP has only been around since 2014, but the Buckeyes have it as their main goal to reach the College Football Playoff annually.

But it’s hard to do, and even harder to win the whole thing.

ESPN has a model that it likes to use to predict the teams that will make the CFP. It has been used over the last few years and was used first for 2022 just before the season kicked off.

We like to keep track of where things are with these projections (even though it’s a secret what drives the percentages), especially since we’re hoping Ohio State is continually up among the favorites to reach the playoff and do some damage.

It must be noted that ESPN only publishes a percentage chance of making the CFP if it is 2% or greater, and there are only fifteen teams that meet that criteria after Week 2 of all the chaos that has been the college football season thus far.

Here is a ranking of teams and their chances of making the College Football Playoff according to ESPN’s Playoff Predictor after Week 2.

Ohio State favored to make College Football Playoff, win national title according to ESPN Allstate Playoff Predictor

According to the ESPN Allstate Playoff Predictor, Ohio State has the best chance to make, and win, the College Football Playoff in 2020.

Not that these things are ever right on, especially before some teams have even played games, but the ESPN Allstate Playoff Predictor is back for 2020. And … you’re going to like what its little central processing unit thinks of Ohio State this fall.

Though the Buckeyes will only play eight or nine games at most with a plus one conference championship game or other consolation contest, it still should be able to put together a pretty good body of work in the COVID-19 world. With a dynamic starting quarterback, an offensive line that might be the best in the country, and some special playmakers on the outside, the offense should hum right along. There are questions on defense, but it’s Ohio State and it’s time for the next man up to become stars at their respective positions.

Because of all of that, presumably, the Playoff Predictor has Ohio State tied with Clemson with the best shot at making the playoffs, at 68 percent. But more than that, the Buckeyes have the best chance of winning it all according to whatever crazy weird scientist formula is used at 26 percent. Just behind the Buckeyes are Alabama (23%) and Clemson (21%).

If this is your sort of thing, head on over to ESPN and take a look at all fifteen teams that are modeled out. Oh yeah, and begin planning your championship events now.

Maybe this isn’t a good time to remind you that Ohio State wasn’t even among the top ten with this model at the beginning of last season.
