Two outgoing Florida underclassmen transfer to Texas State

These two Gators have found their new home together out in the Lone Star State.

Two of Florida’s transferring underclassmen – center [autotag]Tuan Gatkek[/autotag] and shooting guard [autotag]Elijah Kennedy[/autotag] – have chosen Texas State as their new college home. The pair played their first and only season for the Gators in 2021-22 as developmental flyers taken by head coach [autotag]Mike White[/autotag]’s staff to fill out the roster. Neither player lived up to expectations, even as a project, and will be headed down a level in competition.

Gatkek came to the Gators after one season in JUCO, where he completely outclassed the competition at Trinity Valley CC. He was a monster in the paint as a freshman, but with his rail-thin build and lack of physicality, that was never going to translate to the SEC. The hope was that he could be something of a Colin Castleton-lite, blocking shots and translating quick feet to scoring touch.

Instead, he was a nightmare on defense and couldn’t seem to find his wings on offense. With a final line of 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, you may be surprised to learn he averaged 7.7 minutes per game. His minutes total was backloaded, but he so often vanished on the court that, at a guess, many Gators fans would have chosen a lower number.

Kennedy, a last-minute pickup for the team, was once a well-regarded recruit who won a bunch of awards for his high school play in Virginia. A ‘horrific’ knee injury set back his development, though, and took him off the board for many schools. Perhaps resulting form the injury, or perhaps because he always lacked the skills to play the point, Kennedy is key-holed in a very limited role as a shooting guard.

Instead of being a situational assassin, the freshman floundered. He has the skills to be a good shooter, but Mike White’s unimaginative scheme and the team’s often poor execution thereof hung Kennedy out to dry. There are also rumors that Kennedy saw himself as a better player than the program was giving him credit for and became frustrated when his role didn’t increase as the team slumped.

Now playing in the Sun Belt, both will have the opportunity at a more prominent role during the upcoming season. In the era of the transfer portal, it’s possible one or both could find their way back to the SEC. Gators Wire wishes both Gatkek and Kennedy the best in the continuation of their respective careers.

Former Gator Tyree Appleby headed to Wake Forest for final season

Transfer guard Tyree Appleby has found a new home through the transfer portal.

Two days after graduating from the University of Florida, transfer guard [autotag]Tyree Appleby[/autotag] has found his new home for the 2022-23 season. According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, Appleby is headed to Wake Forest to close out his college career.

This is the second transfer of Appleby’s career, the first coming in 2019 when he arrived at Florida from Cleveland State. He’s served as the team’s starting point guard at several points while in Gainesville and averaged 10.9 points and 3.7 assists per game in 2021-22. He likes to take the three-point shot and has hit them at a 35.5% clip over his career. Perhaps his most memorable moment in the Orange and Blue came on a deep buzz-beater to beat Ohio State in Fort Myers last November.

The Demon Deacons are adding an experienced and gritty leader after a season where they finished 25-10 and as a No. 2 seed in the NIT. The hope is that Appleby can help get them to that NCAA Tournament berth. Wake Forest also brought on Delaware’s Andrew Carr and Marist’s Jao Ituka through the portal.

Florida still has three players in the transfer portal, [autotag]Keyontae Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Elijah Kennedy[/autotag] and [autotag]Tuongthach Gatkek[/autotag]. None are expected to return which leaves first-year head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] with three open scholarship spots on the roster.

Florida guard Elijah Kennedy enters the NCAA transfer portal

New Florida basketball head coach Todd Golden has three scholarships available after guard Elijah Kennedy entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The Florida Basketball Hour podcast reported that new head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] will suffer more attrition this offseason on Thursday night. They tweeted that Florida freshman guard [autotag]Elijah Kennedy[/autotag] will enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Former head coach [autotag]Mike White[/autotag] added Kennedy as a late addition to the 2021 recruiting class in August. The 247Sports composite rankings have him as the 164th best player overall and as the 42nd-best shooting guard.

In 23 games last season, Kennedy averaged only 1.3 points on 21% shooting from the field, 0.7 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 6.4 minutes per game.

Playing time would’ve been hard to come by for Kennedy if he elected to stay. Golden brought in guards [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] while [autotag]Niels Lane[/autotag] and [autotag]Kowacie Reeves Jr[/autotag]. remain on the Florida roster.

His departure frees up a third scholarship spot that Golden can use this offseason. Florida will likely use two spots on guards and another one on a big man.

Florida guard Myreon Jones set to return for extra year

First Colin Castleton announced his return to Florida basketball and now Myreon Jones has done the same.

On Monday, [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] received the good news that [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] would be exercising his extra year of eligibility to return to Florida for another season. Six days later, [autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag] followed in his footsteps and decided to return for a super-senior season, according to a report from Jon Rothstein.

Jones’ return gives the Gators a veteran ball-handler in the backcourt to pair with rising sophomore [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] and Belmont transfer [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag]. There’s also sophomore [autotag]Elijah Kennedy[/autotag] and incoming freshman [autotag]Denzel Aberdeen[/autotag] to consider in the backcourt rotation.

The thought was that Florida would need to grab a point guard from the portal after [autotag]Tyree Appleby[/autotag] announced his decision to transfer, but Jones fills that spot in nicely. Golden can still go after someone he likes in the portal with three open roster spots, though.

Jones transferred from Penn State in 2021 and averaged 8.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game with the Gators as a senior. He was very streaky over the season and finished with the season shooting 35.5%. Most of Jones’ shots came from beyond the arc, which made for some exciting offense at times. His best performance came against Georgia when he made seven three-pointers en route to 23 overall.

If Jones can find some consistency, he can be a valuable piece of this Gators team. Golden’s usage of him could help Jones improve his stats and allow the younger guards to grow as the seasons unfolds.

Where does Florida basketball stand? The Athletic breaks down current roster

The Athletic broke down Florida basketball’s current roster while giving fans an idea of what holes head coach Todd Golden is trying to fill.

New Florida head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] earned his first significant victory when he convinced center [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] to return for a fifth season. He was Florida’s leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker last season.

However, Golden still has a lot of recruiting left to do with three spots left on the Gators’ 2022-23 roster. The Athletic spoke with Golden about Castleton’s return while breaking down the state of Florida’s current roster.

Gators Online reported that the Gator Collective played a factor in Castleton’s decision to return. However, Golden also pitched that he would build the team around the big man and that the team would be good enough to make the NCAA tournament.

“That’s similar to Colin, where my thought was if he came back and bought into what we were doing, it would be much easier to build an NCAA Tournament roster around him,” Golden said. “That’s something he’s really passionate about accomplishing, after having a sour taste in his mouth last season.”

Golden added that he wanted to develop Castleton’s touch from deep because it’s a critical part of the offense.

The former San Francisco head coach spent a lot of energy and time on recruiting guard [autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag] to come back for another season. After transferring from Penn State, Jones struggled mightily to find his footing with the team. Golden believes the key to getting Jones back to the sniper he was with the Nittany Lions is rebuilding his confidence.

Another recruiting victory Florida and Golden earned was when Belmont guard [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] chose to transfer to Gainesville. He should immediately slot in as a starter or as the team’s sixth man.

The Gators will also return [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag], [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag], [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag], [autotag]Niels Lane[/autotag] and [autotag]Elijah Kennedy[/autotag] while adding high school recruits [autotag]Denzel Aberdeen[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Reed[/autotag].

Reeves picked up his scoring quite a bit later in the season, averaging 16.3 points per game in the team’s final three contests after only scoring 5.5 earlier in the year. Felder had one of the team’s best plus-minus but only tallied the ninth-most minutes on the team. He should play a lot more next season given Golden’s emphasis on analytics.

Then The Athletic wrote that the Gators want to add a point guard or two and frontcourt depth. Florida’s targets in the backcourt include Bradley’s Terry Roberts, SMU’s Kendric Davis, Charlotte’s Jahmir Young and VMI’s Trey Bonham. Then its frontcourt prospects are LSU‘s Alex Fudge, Morehead State’s Johni Broome and Nevada’s Warren Washington.

Golden has made quite a bit of progress in retooling the Florida roster, so it can get back to the NCAA tournament next season.

Elijah Kennedy seeing key reps as a true freshman

Kennedy has a tough path to the court on a deep squad, but the true freshman is still making a moderate impact off the bench.

Name: Elijah Kennedy

Number: 10

Position: Guard

Class: High School Recruit

Height: 6’3″

Weight: 185 lbs

Hometown: Virginia Beach, Virginia

High School: Green Run

Twitter: @eligotnext

Overview:

A three-star recruit from Virginia Beach, the same area that gave the Gators Keyontae Johnson, Kennedy was a late addition to the 2021 class, which only had eventual five-star recruit Kowacie Reeves committed for most of the cycle. He was ranked as the No. 161 overall player in the recruiting class.

Kennedy suffered a knee injury during his junior season in 2019, and it severely impacted his recruiting. He told The Virginian-Pilot when he signed with the Gators on Aug. 2 that the way Florida handled Keyontae Johnson‘s collapse, from which he still hasn’t been cleared to play, was one of the things that made his Florida offer so attractive.

“One thing that made me feel comfortable was with everything Keyontae has been through, the school is still helping him out,” Harris said. “(Kennedy) will feel comfortable with him being there with another 757 guy.”

Kennedy wasn’t necessarily expected to make much of an impact this season, but given his ability to succeed on both ends of the court, he’s actually seen a good bit of reserve action this season. He’s appeared in every game, seeing a season-high nine minutes in the win over California. He scored three points in the wins over the Golden Bears and the Seminoles, which marks his career-high. However, he’s shooting just 3 of 10 on the season and hasn’t been very impactful on the defensive end or in passing the ball so far.

Still, he’s contributing more than many expected from the three-star and the Gators will hope to see him continue to develop as the season goes on.

Florida basketball secures late class of 2021 commitment

Florida coach Mike White elected to use one of his final two scholarships available to sign class of 2021 guard Elijah Kennedy Monday.

With two scholarships still available for Florida men’s basketball coach Mike White, he elected to use one of them to sign guard Elijah Kennedy. He hails from Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he played high school basketball at Green Run.

Kennedy planned to play for Combina Academy in Lincolnton, North Carolina before he received a late offer from Gators assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen. The 6-foot-4-inch shooting guard helped lead Green Run to a state title in 2020 and a runner-up finish in 2021. He was also named VHSCA Class 5 State Player of the Year in his senior season. Kennedy turned in a season-high 37 points and nine 3-pointers at regionals. Despite his production, he graduated without a scholarship offer from a Power-6 program.

Kennedy becomes the second player White signed in the class of 2021 along with shooting guard Kowacie Reeves Jr. Florida has one more scholarship available to bolster its roster for the 2021-22 season.
