Twitter reacts to Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s brutal drop vs. Bengals

Twitter was none too pleased with Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s brutal drop against the Bengals in Week 17.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense had a great chance to score a touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals just before halftime in Week 17 before veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped a pass near the red zone that could have turned into a touchdown.

The brutal drop came after the Chiefs marched downfield with just minutes remaining in the second quarter. Isiah Pacheco ripped off a huge run to get the drive started, but Kansas City had to settle for a field goal after Valdes-Scantling’s latest blunder in a key situation.

Few players have let Mahomes and the Chiefs down more this year than the beleaguered receiver, who accounts for the sixth-biggest cap hit on Kansas City’s payroll.

Fans on social media didn’t hold back in voicing their discontent with Valdes-Scantling after his miscue derailed Kansas City’s offensive momentum.

Twitter reacts to Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s brutal drop vs. Eagles

#Chiefs fans were less than thrilled with WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling after Kansas City’s loss to the #Eagles on Monday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs saw victory slip out of their hands in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football when wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped a perfectly thrown pass from Patrick Mahomes late in the fourth quarter.

While one play rarely defines an entire game, Valdes-Scantling’s butterfingers absolutely cost Kansas City a chance at victory late in the Super Bowl LVII rematch, and typified the Chiefs’ offensive struggles both in Monday night’s game specifically, and during the team’s entire 2023 season.

Even with a resurgent defense leading the way and the NFL’s reigning MVP under center, it seems that Kansas City just can’t catch a break when its offense has the ball in pivotal moments of crucial games. While Valdes-Scantling is just the latest culprit in this regard, the frustration festering among Chiefs fans on social media was evident in the deluge of posts about his miscue after the game.

Broncos have 2nd-most drops in the NFL entering Week 6

Broncos players need to focus on securing the catch before trying to explode upfield, coach Nathaniel Hackett said.

Denver Broncos players have dropped 10 passes through the first five weeks of the season, tied for second-most in the NFL.

There’s not one player that has inflated the team’s total — it’s been a team-wide problem. Broncos receivers Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy and running backs Melvin Gordon and Mike Boone have all dropped two passes each.

“I just look at it as it’s almost too much pressing,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said of the team’s drops. “Everybody wants to make a play. Everybody is looking to do something a little bit more. In the end, it’s about fundamentals and the basics. Just securing the catch and getting the yards up the field, instead of trying to explode out on something.

“So the guys just have to go back to that. Their fundamentals, their basics, clear the ball and turn it up the field. As we start getting those drops out and get those demons out, the guys will get better.”

Those drops obviously haven’t helped quarterback Russell Wilson’s totals, or his rhythm in the offense. Wilson has struggled early in the season, but the team’s offensive woes do not all fall on him. Denver’s pass-catches have to help their QB out if the offense is going to turn things around.

Jared Cook’s bad game in Chiefs-Chargers brings up ugly memories for Saints fans

Chargers TE Jared Cook had several negative plays against the Chiefs in prime time, dredging up bad memories for New Orleans Saints fans:

Come on, man. New Orleans Saints fans sent veteran tight end Jared Cook out of town riding a rail, and hoped it was the last of him after a 2020 season filled with dropped passes and fumbled receptions. But Cook followed former Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi to the Los Angeles Chargers (where Lombardi was hired as offensive coordinator), and he ended up playing a pivotal role in Thursday night’s prime-time matchup between the Chargers and their AFC West-rival Kansas City Chiefs.

And Cook finished that game by catching 3 of 7 targets thrown his way for 32 yards, dropping a crucial walk-in touchdown pass just before halftime. L.A. lost the game 34-28. That brought back a lot of bad memories for Saints fans tuning in for the national broadcast, and they were quick to air their ire on social media:

Broncos confident Jerry Jeudy will clean up drops

Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy dropped two passes in his NFL debut but his teammates are confident he’ll bounce back going forward.

Broncos rookie wide receiver Jerry Jeudy showed off his impressive route-running and ability to create separation in his NFL debut on Monday. His two drops overshadowed his moments of strong play, though.

Jeudy caught four passes for 56 yards in a 16-14 defeat and his two drops proved to be costly in a closely contested game.

“He dropped the ball. He’s not the first guy that’s done that, won’t be the last,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said after the loss. “We expect him to catch that. He expects himself to catch it. It would have put us in field goal range and given us a first down. But those are the mistakes that can cost you when you’re playing a good team.”

Fans in Denver can probably remember tight end Noah Fant having a case of the drops as a rookie last season. Fant has since improved his catching and he had a big game against the Titans, hauling in five passes for 81 yards and a score. Fant is confident that Jeudy can also clean up his drops.

“Nobody wants drops, but coming from me, I understand it,” Fant said. “I’ve been a rookie, been in that spot before. For me, it’s not really alarming. I think Jerry has all the ability in the world and he’s a very good player for us, so it’s just one of those things that he has to focus in on and lock in on. He has all the ability to catch those balls and I’m sure he’s going to do that.”

Broncos running back Melvin Gordon, who lost a fumble against Tennessee, noted that players will make mistakes but they have to bounce back from them. Gordon responded well after his fumble, finishing the day with 15 rushes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Jeudy needs to have a similar response going forward.

“I made a mistake too and you got to understand that football isn’t a perfect game and mistakes are going to be made and they’re going to happen,” Gordon said. “It’s just part of the game. It is what it is, but the players that really excel is the guys that can get over it the quickest and kind of make up for it.

“That’s what we were trying to coach to him and let him know. It was his first game, but I can promise you he’s pretty hard on himself about the drops, knowing what caliber player he is. He’ll be better for sure.”

Jeudy’s drops were costly but his flashes of brilliance were promising. Broncos fans shouldn’t overreact to just one game — Jeudy has 16 weeks to clean up his drops and become the star WR Denver expects him to be.
