Brian Branch fined $10k for Week 10 hip drop tackle

Brian Branch was fined for the second time in three games.

Lions safety Brian Branch had 10 tackles in Detroit’s 26-23 comeback win on Sunday night against the Houston Texans. However, one of those tackles ended up being a little costly for Branch and has made him lighter in the wallet.

Branch was hit with a fine totaling $10,128 for his hip drop tackle on Texans wide receiver Robert Woods late in the third quarter. Branch was not penalized during the game for the tackle.

The league has been cracking down on the tackle following the injury last season to Ravens tight end Mark Andrews on such a tackle. But more often, the penalty comes after the game in the form of fines. It’s been hit or miss as to whether the player gets a flag immediately after.

This is Branch’s third fine since Week 9, when he was fined for his hit on Packers wide receiver Bo Melton and for his gestures, the double middle fingers, as he left the field after he was ejected.

Jaguars make pair of practice squad promotions for Week 11

Jaguars make pair of practice squad promotions for Week 11

The Jaguars promoted wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. and linebacker Anthony Pittman from their practice squad to the active roster via standard elevation on Saturday for Jacksonville’s Week 11 matchup with the Detroit Lions.

The Jaguars also ruled rookie running back Keilan Robinson, who is currently designated to return from the injured reserve, out of the contest.

Jones signed with Jacksonville’s practice squad on Oct. 29. A third-round NFL draft pick by Chicago in 2022, Jones appeared in 27 games and made two starts with the Bears before being released on Oct. 26.

Jones logged 12 receptions for 135 yards and one touchdown, 19 rushing attempts for 165 yards and one score, and averaged 26.7 yards per kickoff return over 29 tries with Chicago.

Pittman signed with Detroit as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and carved out roles as a depth linebacker and special teamer with the Lions for five seasons, recording 12 total tackles, one defended pass and one forced fumble.

Pittman signed with Washington this offseason but was released during the Commanders’ preseason roster cutdown. He joined the Jaguars’ practice squad on Oct. 7.

NFL insider compares Steelers’ legitimacy to 8-1 Detroit Lions

Jordan Schultz compares the Steelers to the 8-1 Detroit Lions, highlighting their ability to wear down opponents after a loss.

Surprisingly enough, on a recent episode of The Herd, hosted by the ever-polarizing Colin Cowherd, there was a Pittsburgh Steelers love fest taking place.

Cowherd hosted NFL insider Jordan Schultz, who was asked what he believes the true ceiling for the 7-2 Steelers is. It felt like before Cowherd could finish asking, Schultz was off to the races, singing the Steel City’s praises through 11 weeks of football.

Schultz claimed that Russell Wilson had further solidified the Steelers as contenders, going as far as to compare Pittsburgh to perhaps the best team in the National Football League—the 8-1 Detroit Lions.

Schultz argued that Pittsburgh and Detroit both seem to leave opposing teams in worse shape once they defeat them. His claims were supported by Washington’s recent collapse against Philadelphia on Thursday Night Football in Week 11, only four short days after the Steelers’ Week 10 28-27 victory over the Commanders.

Fans of the Steelers are hoping the same can apply to a potential Week 11 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, as the AFC North rivals are closing the distance in a tight divisional title race.

Detroit Lions star thought Cincinnati Bengals would draft him

A Lions star says the Bengals were interested — and this would have been wild.

The Cincinnati Bengals have a problem at running back right now, so it’s pretty interesting to hear a Detroit Lions superstar suggest he almost joined the team.

Appearing on a podcast with Richard Sherman, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs suggested that the Bengals were a team ready to go get him in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.

“I knew for a fact that Dallas was gonna get me at No. 26 if I was still there,” Gibbs said. “And a couple other places like Cincinnati is gonna get met at like No. 18 or somewhere around that range.”

Gibbs wound up going 12th overall to the Lions, while the Bengals stood pat at No. 28 and took Clemson edge Myles Murphy.

While it’s hard to imagine the Bengals would have traded up for a running back, picking that late in the order might’ve encouraged a luxury selection like Gibbs had he taken a tumble.

Instead, Gibbs has put up 1,672 yards, and 17 scores on a 5.5 average over 24 pro games in Detroit. The Bengals moved on from Joe Mixon and had to trade for a running back at the deadline and add another free agency as they continue to seek help at the spot.

The 2-8 Jaguars head to Detroit staring down a contest with one of if not the NFL’s best team this season, the 8-1 Lions.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said on Wednesday that it has not been difficult to manage the team’s emotions as they prepare for what on the outside appears to be a daunting task.

“No, it’s really not. It’s a great group of guys,” Pederson said. “This is Week 11. Guys haven’t really had a break, obviously. They keep grinding.

“Are we defeated, disappointed, discouraged? I mean, there’s moments of that, obviously, because of the way the season’s going. But by no means are they quitting or lack of energy or wanting to improve. Get better as a team, I still see that every single day. It’s a credit to those guys.”

Jacksonville vs. Detroit will kick off at 1 p.m. ET at Ford Field.

USC stars steal the spotlight on Sunday Night Football yet again

Amon-Ra St. Brown and Calen Bullock both made big plays in the most recent NFL Sunday Night Football game, boosting USC in front of a national audience.

During last week’s Sunday Night Football matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings, it was the USC Trojans on the field who stole the show. In this week’s prime-time showdown between the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans, the outcome was the same, with two former USC stars showing out under the lights.

First, former USC All-American and current Texans safety Calen Bullock who stepped up by recording an interception. Just 10 games into his NFL career, Bullock already has four picks.

In an ironic twist, the quarterback throwing the pick was former Cal star Jared Goff. In three starts against the Trojans while in college, Goff went 0-3, including throwing a 46-yard pick six to Adoree’ Jackson in the 2015 Cal-USC football game.

However, Goff would bounce back from the interception, later throwing a nine-yard touchdown pass to former USC wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. St. Brown has now scored a touchdown in seven consecutive road games, tied for the NFL’s sixth-longest streak since the league’s 1970 merger. St. Brown has the Lions in first place in the NFC and in great position to make the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance.

Detroit would go on to win the game 26-23 on a walk-off field goal.
