Tennessee posts record setting performance in win over Kent State

Tennessee scores 71 points in Week 3 win against Kent State at Neyland Stadium.

No. 9 Tennessee (3-0) defeated Kent State (0-3), 71-0, Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

The Vols led, 65-0, at halftime. Tennessee set a pair of scoring records against the Golden Flashes, scoring 37 points in the first quarter and 65 points in the first half. The Vols also set a single-game scoring mark in the modern era.

Redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava completed 10-of-16 passing attempts for 173 yards and one passing touchdown. He also rushed for 31 yards on five attempts. Gaston Moore entered the game in the second quarter and completed 4-of-4 passing attempts for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

DeSean Bishop rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on seven attempts, while Dylan Sampson totaled 101 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 15 attempts.

Dont’e Thornton Jr. totaled two receptions for 64 yards, while Chris Brazzell II recorded two receptions for 63 receiving yards and one touchdown. Mike Matthews finished the contest with two receptions for 35 yards and one touchdown.

Tennessee’s defense scored on a safety in the first quarter and kicker Max Gilbert added two field goals after halftime.

Redshirt freshman running back DeSean Bishop enters his second season with Tennessee in 2024. He did not appear in any games last season and earned a redshirt.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back has appeared in both contests for the Vols in 2024 — wins against Chattanooga and North Carolina State.

Bishop has totaled 102 rushing yards and one touchdown on 15 attempts this season. He also recorded one reception for 10 yards.

Bishop met with media on Tuesday ahead of Tennessee’s Week 3 contest versus Kent State. He was asked to evaluate his game through two games.

“I think I’ve done solid, a solid job of just getting back to my flow,” he said. “Being two years out of not playing football, I think I did a good job of attacking that.

“Things I’m trying to improve on is just my overall play, pad-level and stuff like that. Just trying to get a good feel for the game. I feel like I’ve done a solid job of taking everything, making my reps count that I’m getting.”

Bishop did not play in 2023 for Tennessee after suffering a preseason injury.

Head coach Josh Heupel discussed who stood out offensively during Tennessee’s first fall training camp scrimmage.

“I thought DeSean Bishop had a really nice night,” Heupel said. “Efficient, effective, ran hard. I thought he did a really nice job.

“I thought our wideouts did a nice job of operation. Chris Brazzell and, obviously, Squirrel (White), but also seeing Chas (Nimrod) and Kaleb (Webb) out there competing and playing extremely well. I thought the quarterbacks operated really well for almost the entire night. It was good work.”

Tennessee scrimmaged for the second time at Neyland Stadium during fall training camp on Wednesday.

The Vols will kick off its 2023 season on Sept. 2 versus Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee (noon EDT, ABC).

Following the Vols’ second scrimmage, third-year head coach Josh Heupel provided injury updates for three Tennessee student-athletes.

Heupel mentioned freshman running back DeSean Bishop “is not out for year, but will be out for an extended period of time, probably a couple of months.”

Freshman defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby will be out for the year.

Heupel also discussed senior offensive lineman Cooper Mays ahead of the Vols’ first game.

“We believe we’ll have an opportunity to have him back,” Heupel said. “Everything has gone well since he missed training camp and had the issue that he had. At the same time, and it’s true for every position but in particular the offensive line, you better have contingency plans.”

Following the Vols’ second scrimmage, third-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel discussed freshman early enrollee running back DeSean Bishop.

“I say that, he’s handled the transition into college football extremely well,” Heupel said. “We thought he was extremely athletic, he had a great vision, pace as a running back coming out of high school. He’s done a really good job of handling the communication system and not being too big for him since day one. Really proud of him.”

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Bishop is from Karns High School in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Running back DeSean Bishop commits to Tennessee football.

The 2022 early signing period is taking place Dec. 21-23 for the 2023 recruiting signing class.

The 2022 early signing period is Josh Heupel’s second as Tennessee’s head coach. He was hired as the Vols’ head coach in January 2021.

Heupel guided the Vols to a 10-2 regular season in 2022.

No. 6 Tennessee (10-2, 6-2 SEC) will play No. 7 Clemson (11-2, 8-0 ACC) in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.

Kickoff between the Vols and Tigers is slated for 8 p.m. EST (ESPN) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Vols’ 2023 running back target DeSean Bishop will sign his national letter of intent Wednesday at 2 p.m. EST.

Bishop is a senior at Karns High School in Knoxville, Tennessee.

“Will be announcing where I’ll be signing on Wednesday at 2 p.m. EST at Karns High School Auditorium,” Bishop announced. “Everyone is welcome!”

The 5-foot-10, 197-pound Bishop will choose his college destination between Tennessee and Appalachian State.

He committed to Coastal Carolina in July.

Bishop reopened his recruitment Dec. 6 after Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell was hired at Liberty in the same capacity.

Bishop led Karns to a 7-4 record in 2022.

He rushed for more than 3,000 yards and scored 30 touchdowns for Karns last season.
