History on This Day: Derrick Rose becomes youngest ever to win MVP

Rose was named the MVP after posting averages of 25 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds to lead the Bulls.

On May 3, 2011, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose became the youngest player in NBA history to be named the Most Valuable Player at 22 years, 191 days old.

Rose was named the MVP after posting averages of 25 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds to lead the Bulls to the top seed in the Eastern Conference. He earned 113 out of a possible 120 first-place votes to claim the Maurice Podoloff Trophy.

The accomplishment by Rose came in just his third season in the league. He narrowly beat Wes Unseld as the youngest player to win the award, who was 23 years and nine days old when he won in 1969. Rose was the second Bulls player to ever win, joining Michael Jordan, who won five times.

During the season, Rose was just the seventh player in history to average at least 25 points, 7.5 assists and four rebounds in a single season. He was also the fifth player ever with at least 2,000 points, 600 assists and 300 rebounds in a season.

Christian Wood limps through as Rockets fall to Julius Randle, Knicks

Christian Wood (19 points, 8 rebounds) and Kelly Olynyk (17 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists) each had big games, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Veterans Julius Randle (31 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) and Derrick Rose (24 points, 6 rebounds) had strong games on Sunday night in Houston, leading the Knicks to a decisive 122-97 victory over the host Rockets (box score). It’s the 11th win for New York (36-28) in 12 games.

Big men Christian Wood (19 points, 8 rebounds) and Kelly Olynyk (17 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists) each had strong games for the short-handed Rockets, but it wasn’t nearly enough for Houston (16-49), which owns the NBA’s worst record. The Rockets were also weary after playing their second game in 24 hours, which certainly didn’t help their cause. The Knicks led by double digits in the first quarter and were in complete control throughout Sunday’s game at Toyota Center.

Second-year guard Kevin Porter Jr. (14 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds) and rookie forward KJ Martin (13 points, 6 rebounds) each scored in double-figures for the Rockets, while second-year guard RJ Barrett added 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists for New York. The surging Knicks own the No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference standings and looked every bit the part of a playoff contender against the rebuilding Rockets.

Houston returns to action on Wednesday, when they wrap up a five-game homestand at Toyota Center with a matchup versus the Philadelphia 76ers ā€” led by former Rockets general manager Daryl Morey. There may be at least some additional reinforcements for Stephen Silas by that game, with Danuel House Jr. and DJ Augustin possibilities to return.

For now, here’s a look back at highlights and postgame reaction from Sunday’s blowout loss by the Rockets against the Knicks. Wood told reporters that he is not yet sure whether he will be able to play against the Sixers due to ongoing quad and ankle soreness.

Free agency stock watch: Devonte Graham, Lonzo Ball, Derrick Rose

As we begin to approach the end of the regular season, many players around the league are finalizing a case for their value in free agency.

As we begin to approach the end of the regular season, many players around the league are finalizing their case for their value in free agency.

Of course, executives around the league always have tough decisions to make about who they plan to re-sign as well as who they plan to pursue or let walk during free agency. But as the season progresses, it becomes a bit easier to evaluate who would be a good fit for their franchise and who might not be.

As part of ourĀ ongoing seriesĀ at HoopsHype, we are looking at whose free agency stock has gone up ā€“ and down ā€“ over the last several games.

LeBron James on his career MVP count: ‘I should have more than four’

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said he believes he should have more MVP awards but “isn’t sitting around crying about it.”

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James added to his case as the 2020-21 NBA MVP on Thursday night as he led the Lakers to their fourth straight victory after the All-Star break. James had his third-highest scoring game of the season with 37 points and continued to anchor an elite Lakers defense playing without two-time All-Defense first-team selection Anthony Davis and former Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol.

While the rest of the Lakers certainly deserve credit for how the defense has played, LeBron James has absolutely been the catalyst for their great play on that end while also being the leader of the offense. It’s for those reasons, as well as the Lakers’ current standing at No. 2 in the West, why LeBron has a strong case of the NBA. And that’s to say nothing of the MVP awards he thinks he should have, which he addressed on Thursday night.

James is not “sitting around” and crying about it but he is certainly doing something about it with his play this season, leading the Lakers to a great defense at 36 years old without two keystones to their defensive gameplan.

Rockets at Knicks: Lineups, injury reports, and broadcast info for Saturday

Houston hopes to snap its losing streak, but it won’t be easy. Christian Wood and Victor Oladipo are out, while PJ Tucker is questionable.

The Houston Rockets will remain short-handed for the immediate future, with at least two starters and possibly a third sidelined for Saturday’s game at Madison Square Garden versus the New York Knicks.

Star big man Christian Wood remains sidelined indefinitely with a right ankle sprain, while veteran guard Victor Oladipo is out for the time being with a right foot injury. Even defensive ace PJ Tucker, who has the NBA’s longest active streak of consecutive games played at 266, is questionable with a left thigh contusion. Given all those injuries, it’s not a huge shock that Houston enters Saturday on a four-game losing streak.

The Knicks, by contrast, are relatively healthy, with guard Frank Ntilikina (health and safety protocols) as the only quasi-rotation player listed on Friday’s injury report. If there’s any break for Stephen Silas and the Rockets, it’s that the Knicks will be on the second night of a back-to-back ā€” and in two different cities, having played in Washington on Friday. So there’s at least the opportunity for some tired legs, or perhaps for New York coach Tom Thibodeau to consider a maintenance plan.

Hereā€™s when you should tune in to see Saturday’s game:

  • Date: Saturday, Feb. 13
  • Time: 7:00 p.m. Central
  • TV Channel: AT&T SportsNet Southwest
  • Live stream:Ā fuboTV (watch for freeĀ in Houston markets)

Probable starting lineups

Houston Rockets (11-14)

  • Guard: John Wall
  • Guard: Eric Gordon
  • Forward: Jae’Sean Tate
  • Forward: PJ Tucker
  • Center: DeMarcus Cousins

New York Knicks (11-15)

  • Guard: Elfrid Payton
  • Guard: RJ Barrett
  • Forward: Reggie Bullock
  • Forward: Julius Randle
  • Center: Mitchell Robinson

Randle leads the Knicks in most major statistical categories, averaging 22.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game. Meanwhile, recent trade acquisition Derrick Rose brings extra scoring punch to the bench.

For the Rockets, Gordon will again start in place of Oladipo. If the signing of young big man Ray Spalding is completed before Saturday’s game, he could provide additional frontcourt depth behind Cousins.

Should Tucker (questionable) not be able to play and lose his consecutive games streak, reserve forward Danuel House Jr. would appear to be the most likely candidate for Silas to start in Tucker’s place.

Watch: Derrick Rose hits Immanuel Quickley for first assist in return

Rose finished with 14 points in his debut with the Knicks on Tuesday in a loss to the Heat.

Derrick Rose made his debut with the New York Knicks on Tuesday, producing 14 points and three assists during a 98-96 loss on the road to the Miami Heat.

Rose, who played in New York during the 2016-17 season, was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Knicks in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr. and a future second-round pick. The trade was officially completed on Monday morning with Rose joining the Knicks in Miami by nightfall.

The trade reunited Rose with head coach Tom Thibodeau, who Rose played for earlier in his career with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves.

In his first game back with Thibodeau, Rose looked to be comfortable in the contest, and seemingly resembled a player that had been with the Knicks all season long.

Rose checked in for the first time with 3:27 to go in the first quarter and, less than a minute later, hit rookie Immanuel Quickley for his first assist back with the Knicks.

While Quickley got the first of three assists from Rose, fellow rookie Obi Toppin was the beneficiary of the best one of the evening. On the play, Rose split a pair of defenders and then hit Toppin with the one-handed, no-look pass in the second quarter.

The Knicks are hopeful the addition of Rose can help the team perform better with his veteran leadership and knowledge of the game. Despite a losing effort, Rose certainly got off to a quick start in his debut and should only improve the more he plays with his new team.

Derrick Rose taking Knicks rookies under his wing in New York return

The former MVP mentored rookies like Killian Hayes this season in Detroit and is looking to continue that role in New York.

Derrick Rose just joined the New York Knicks on Monday, but the former Most Valuable Player already made a strong effort to connect with two of his new rookie teammates.

Rose, who played in New York during the 2016-17 season, was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Knicks in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr. and a future second-round pick. The trade was officially completed on Monday morning with Rose joining the Knicks in Miami by nightfall.

On Tuesday, Knicks rookie Immanuel Quickley revealed that Rose reached out to him and fellow first-round pick, Obi Toppin. Rose sat down and had dinner with the two rookies and offered his assistance in anything that is needed from them.

“He just stressed to me ā€” first of all, he gave me his number ā€” and said anything I need just hit him,” Quickley said, via the New York Post. “But he sat down with me a little bit, me and Obi actually, just told us heā€™s here to help us, heā€™s here to help us grow and things like that. Itā€™s good to get a chance to talk to him a little bit last night.”

The 32-year-old version of Rose is much different than the one that played under head coach Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in his career. Rose still has much to offer the Knicks on the court, but the 13-year veteran has also taken on additional leadership qualities and played an integral role in mentoring some of the rookies in Detroit, such as Killian Hayes.

Rose will be looking to continue that role in New York and Quickley will be all ears throughout the rest of the season.

“Anytime you can get a chance to pick someoneā€™s brain whoā€™s been through pretty much everything ā€“ playoffs, everything, as far as MVP,” Quickley said. “Itā€™s always a good chance to learn from somebody who has the experience. Thatā€™s the best teacher as far as picking his brain through everything heā€™s known about the game. Itā€™s something Iā€™m looking forward to.”

With Rose now in the picture, it is unclear how his arrival will impact Quickley on the court.

Quickley has emerged as a key contributor off the bench and has been among the best rookies to this point of the season. He believes he can fit well next to Rose and is willing to play whatever role is asked of him moving forward in the rotation.

The acquisition of Rose appears to be a good move for the Knicks.

He can certainly provide additional guidance and advice for the younger players on the team, like Quickley and Toppin. Only time will tell, though, if he can help them pick up some additional wins…

Pistons’ Derrick Rose grooming Killian Hayes to be a great player

The 12-year veteran has embraced the mentor role with open arms and wants to help Killian Hayes have a great rookie season.

[jwplayer gGabj0xN]

Derrick Rose pointed to past teammates like Rip Hamilton, Kurt Thomas and Kirk Hinrich as players that helped show him the ropes as a rookie. Now, Rose is taking on that responsibility this season with the Detroit Pistons and rookie Killian Hayes.

The 12-year veteran has embraced the mentor role with open arms and wants to instill his wisdom in the Pistons’ younger players. Players of Rose’s caliber may not necessarily welcome that role, especially with a player that is viewed as the future, but Rose is up for the job.

Rose took on more of a backseat role in that department last season, his first with the Pistons. He felt as though it would have been out of turn to come into a new environment and immediately assume that role but he is ready to groom Hayes this season.

“I love his game. It’s an honor to play with a talent like that,” Rose said Saturday on a Zoom call with reporters. “I look at the league and for me being 6-foot-3, I’m kinda like a dinosaur when you look at all the guards in the league. You have to be at least 6-foot-5 and up. I already talked to him and told him he is the future of the team and there is no competing. My job here is to push him and groom him to be a great player.”

Hayes, who was the seventh overall pick, averaged 11.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals in 20 games last season with ratiopharm Ulm in Germany. He also has prior experience with Cholet and was the MVP of the U16 European Champion in 2017 with France.

Rose mentioned that Hayes might have a bit of a target on his back this season after arriving in the NBA from overseas. He is going to help during practice to prepare him for the season.

“I have to get on him in practice as much as possible,” Rose said. “In the game, he’s a kid and coming from overseas guys are going to try to play aggressive with him. So, it’s my job to play aggressive on him throughout this whole camp, so that when we get into a regular game, he doesn’t feel that much pressure.”

Hayes currently projects to be the Pistons’ starting point guard with Rose likely coming off of the bench. Pistons head coach Dwane Casey likes his prior professional experience and believes that will help him pick up the offense quickly.

The 19-year-old figures to be among the frontrunners for the Rookie of the Year award given his experience and projected role with the Pistons. He has already started to impress his teammates and could be in store for a big year.

Detroit begins preseason play on Dec. 11 vs. the New York Knicks.

NBA executive believes Chris Paul would ‘love’ return to L.A., Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have a lot of options when it comes to improving their team and one of them might be Chris Paul.

The Los Angeles Lakers are going to be aggressive in improving their team this offseason in hopes of bolstering their title defense in the coming season. And while there are a lot of names always connected with the Lakers because they are the Lakers, there are two names of interest that have popped up in the past week, Chris Paul and Derrick Rose. A reason they are interesting? Well, if Rajon Rondo gets a bigger deal this offseason after a strong playoff performance, the Lakers look like they will need some additional help for LeBron James at point guard.

An Eastern Conference executive told Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus that Paul would “love” a return to Los Angeles, where he played with the Clippers, but this time joining his pal LeBron on the Lakers.

“Chris PaulĀ would love to come back to L.A. I know it would be a dream come true for Chris,” an Eastern Conference executive said. “I know LeBron loves and trusts him and he would be a good fit.”

In addition to Paul, there have been rumors about Derrick Rose, who had a strong season with the Detroit Pistons and was rumored to be a target of the Lakers during the season before the Lake Show instead chose to play the buyout market by bringing in Markieff Morris, Dion Waiters, and J.R. Smith. Heavy.com’s Sean Deveney reported some within the league find a Rose deal more likely now than during the offseason.

Whether it’s Rose, Paul, or someone else, it sure does seem that adding some point guard help will be a priority for the Lakers. LeBron led the league in assists, but as we saw in the playoffs, allowing LeBron to play off the ball and be a freight train in transition still has a place in the Lakers attack.
