Listen to Lions announcer Dan Miller’s electrifying call as Detroit clinched NFC title game appearance

This Lions announcer call will give you goosebumps.

Any time a once downtrodden franchise like the Detroit Lions finally rises to prominence, it’s worth putting a microscope on the local spin. With the Lions set for a date against the San Francisco 49ers in next Sunday’s NFC title game, Detroit radio broadcaster Dan Miller was the perfect person to set the table.

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tried to mount a futile rally on Sunday afternoon, Miller delivered a call on Derrick Barnes’ game-clinching interception that was absolutely breathtaking. It is one of those moments that captivate us when we take the time to actually sit down and watch sports.

It truly does not get any better than special, exciting calls like this:

Man, if that doesn’t give you goosebumps just listening to it, I don’t know what will.

Dan Miller has been the radio voice of the Detroit Lions for a long time. Like the fans, he’s suffered through a lot of losing football over the years.

So who better to call the team’s first division title in 30 years than Miller? The longtime broadcaster and iconic voice couldn’t hide his excitement when Ifeatu Melifonwu picked off the Minnesota Vikings’ last-gasp pass to seal Detroit’s 30-24 victory on Christmas Eve.

The Lions shared Miller’s play-by-play call of the clinching interception, Detroit’s fourth of the afternoon.

Lions moving their radio home, expected to retain Dan Miller

It’s back to 97.1 The Ticket for the Lions radio broadcasts

The Detroit Lions have signed a contract with Entercom Detroit to move the team’s radio network to that company and have 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit serve as the flagship radio station. The move ends a five-year run with WJR-AM serving as the radio home of the Lions.

All of the Lions Radio Network’s familiar programming, including live game broadcasts, pre- and post-game shows and exclusive player interviews, will appear on 97.1 in Detroit. The station served as the longtime broadcast home of the Lions before a rift with the critical tone of the station forced a move five years ago. Entercom will also own the distribution rights for affiliate stations in Michigan and Ohio.

“The Lions are synonymous with the city of Detroit and this is a great opportunity to leverage our position as the unrivaled leaders in sports radio and deliver dynamic Lions content, both on game days and throughout the year,” said Debbie Kenyon of Entercom Detroit, via a statement. “This partnership now makes 97.1 The Ticket the flagship station for all four professional sports teams in the Motor City, giving fans a one-stop destination for all of their favorite local teams.”

There is no immediate word on any personnel changes to the radio network, but popular play-by-play man Dan Miller is expected to remain with the team.

Watch: Dan Miller interviews Lions’ President Rod Wood

The “Voice of the Lions” Dan Miller interviews Detroit Lions’ President Rod Wood following Shelia Ford Hamp’s elevation to principal owner.

Recently, the “Voice of the Lions” Dan Miller interviewed Detroit Lions’ President Rod Wood following Shelia Ford Hamp’s elevation to principal owner, discussing a variety of topics.

The interview begins like most in today’s climate, with a focus around how Wood’s job has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We left (Allen Park) thinking we’d be gone for a couple of weeks and everything would get back to normal,” Wood said, “and now here we are almost the end of June, and everybody’s (still) working from home.”

Miller then pivoted the conversation towards what type of legacy Martha Firestone Ford was leaving behind.

“(She) became widely respected within the league,” Wood said. “And admired. And I don’t know that ever heard anybody, including Roger Goodell (NFL Comminishiner), call her anything other than Mrs. Ford — and that shows the level of respect that she had.”

Once the conversation shifted towards Shelia Ford Hamp, Wood discussed her (and the rest of the Ford families) desire to win, Hamp’s ability to gain experience working side-by-side with her mother, and creating her own mark as a leader.

Other topics discussed include the organization’s technological support team, how technology can help the team in the future, coaching/team leadership, the team bonding via social justice discussions and pandemic related situations, as well as how Wood’s job has changed in 2020, and how Allen Park is being prepped for football in the fall.
