The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Our favorite draft picks (mostly) outside the first round

In this week’s “Xs and Os,” Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar get into their favorite draft picks (mostly) outside of the first round.

Now that the 2024 NFL draft is in the books, which players who were not selected in the first round have the best chances to make real impacts on their new NFL teams? In this episode of “The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell,” Greg and Doug Farrar get into their favorite guys mostly outside of the first round.

Ricky Pearsall, WR, San Francisco 49ers — We’re cheating a bit here, as Pearsall was selected with the 31st overall pick, but if the 49ers keep both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on the roster, Pearsall can impact the passing game in ways that his new teammates will find complementary, and in ways that bring new colors to Kyle Shanahan’s playbook. Also, watch out for fourth-round receiver Jacob Cowing from Arizona as a smaller speed element.

Renardo Green, CB, San Francisco 49ers — On the defensive side, and with the 64th overall pick in the second round, the 49ers got a cornerback who showed all the athleticism and coverage skills you want at the position, and brings an absolute dawg mentality. You need look no further than Green’s tape against LSU’s Malik Nabers.

Marshawn Kneeland, DL, Dallas Cowboys — The Cowboys’ scouting staff is one of the NFL’s best, and with the 56th overall pick in the second round, Dallas picked up the Western Michigan and Senior Bowl star, who brings Khalil Mack to mind with his power-based rush, and Za’Darius Smith to mind with his effective gap versatility.

Malik Washington, WR, Miami Dolphins — Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but the Dolphins got a receiver who’s really fast in some really interesting ways. Washington, the Virginia receiver who Miami stole with the 184th overall pick in the sixth round, brings an exciting, physical style that puts defenses in severe conflict when those defenses also have to deal with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Cole Bishop, S, Buffalo Bills — The Bills’ former secondary got old overnight, and a re-do is now necessary. Bishop, the Utah star, is a prefect safety with which to rebuild because he can do just about everything at a high level.

Adonai Mitchell, WR, Indianapolis Colts — Mitchell showed at Texas that he has first-round talent, and if he can put it together with the nuances of the position, he’ll give the Colts the alpha receiver that seems to be the only thing this offense was missing. Not bad for the 52nd overall pick in the second round.

Jalen McMillan, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — McMillan may have been the lost member of the Washington receiver group from a production standpoint due to injury in 2023 (which is how the Bucs were able to get him with the 92nd overall pick in the third round), but the tape shows a valuable deep receiver who can expertly dice zone coverage downfield.

Trey Benson, RB, Arizona Cardinals — At Florida State, Benson showed the ability to run with power like a bigger man, and to evade tackles with the agility of a smaller back. The Cardinals selected Benson with the 66th overall pick in the third round, and they’ll likely avail themselves of Benson’s special skill set sooner than later.

Bub Means, WR, New Orleans Saints — At Pitt, Means displayed the ability to be a fantastic deep receiver despite a trio of quarterbacks who really struggled to do anything. Odds are, the Saints got a receiver with the 170th pick in the fifth round who can be even better in the NFL — all he needs is functional quarterback play to turn it loose.

How former Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown fits with the Dallas Cowboys

Overshown could play much more than on special teams.

Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys on Friday night in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. He could greatly factor into the team’s long-term plans. Continue reading “How former Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown fits with the Dallas Cowboys”

Dallas Cowboys select Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown in third round of NFL draft

DeMarvion Overshown is staying in Texas with the Dallas Cowboys!

The Dallas Cowboys selected Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown with their third-round pick on Friday night. Overshown came off the board as the No. 90 pick in the draft.

The move is a surprising one given how little publicity the Longhorns linebacker received throughout draft season. Nevertheless, the Arp, Texas, native adds tremendous speed and athleticism to a defense that could use help at the position.

The former five-star high school recruit enjoyed an illustrious college career, capped by 96 tackles in his final season on the Forty Acres. He received first-team All Big 12 honors and finished as a Butkus Award semifinalist for the nation’s top linebacker.

Texas’ defensive star is a versatile piece to add to the Dallas defense. Overshown figures to bolster the Cowboys’ pass rush with elite edge rusher Micah Parsons and veteran end DeMarcus Lawrence. He could become a long-term option for the team at linebacker.

Report: Cowboys highly interested in Texas RB Bijan Robinson

The Dallas Cowboys are giving significant consideration to Bijan Robinson.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson might stay in the same state after all. On Monday we learned that the Dallas Cowboys would welcome the big-time prospect should he fall to them or a couple picks before.

Dallas Cowboys writer Patrik Walker reported that the team would consider drafting him should they get the opportunity.

“If Bijan Robinson falls to near the Cowboys, he becomes a major consideration for Dallas, (per Stephen Jones),” Walker wrote. “Question then becomes how far is close enough to get on the phone?”

That’s the question many are asking about the rare talent. Some consider him reminiscent of Detroit Lions and Oklahoma State great Barry Sanders. In recent days we learned that Sanders views the great player in high esteem.

Walker shared his thoughts on when Robinson would be drafted, stating, “19th-overall is when you get on the horn and try to go get him … he’s likely gone no later than 15, but probably top 10.”

Bijan has demonstrated his value. We’ll continue to follow which NFL teams are looking to bring him in heading up to the draft.

Mike Florio: Bijan Robinson can make the Cowboys a ‘Super Bowl contender’

Bijan Robinson could be the missing piece for the Dallas Cowboys.

Anticipation is building for the 2023 NFL Draft starting this week. Continue reading “Mike Florio: Bijan Robinson can make the Cowboys a ‘Super Bowl contender’”

ESPN’s Kiper, McShay send Cowboys CB in 1st, DT, OT, Safety in 3-round combo mock

ESPN’s Kiper, McShay send Cowboys CB in 1st, DT, OT, Safety in 3-round mock. Cowboys Wire breaksdown each selection and how they would fit on the roster.

With just a little more than a week until the first night of the 2021 NFL draft,  thousands of mock drafts dissecting players and their fits on potential teams have been penned. However, in regards to the Dallas Cowboys some mock drafts are more friendly than others. ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper and Todd McShay recently released a three-round mock draft where they alternate selections, choosing players they feel would be the best fit.

Kiper and McShay’s selections for the Cowboys would be an ideal scenario, and while the un-predictability of the NFL draft could render even the best mock draft useless, it’s interesting to study what two of the top draft analysts feel would be the best fits for Dallas. The Cowboys have four selections in the first three-rounds of next weeks draft, with the selections being at number 10, 44, 75 and 99.

10. Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

McShay gets the first selection for the Cowboys and with five quarterbacks and no defensive players selected in the top-ten, Dallas gets their choice of defenders. Surtain’s size (6-foot-2) and instincts would be a great fit in Dan Quinn’s scheme.

Dallas gets first pick of the defensive pool, and I’m reuniting Surtain with his former Alabama teammate Trevon Diggs in this CB room. Surtain is a true shutdown corner.

Surtain’s chances of being available here: 84.7%

44. Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama

For the Cowboys second pick, McShay goes back to the Crimson Tide’s national championship defense.

Only three teams allowed five-plus yards per carry last year, and Dallas was among them. Barmore would help stop the bleeding in the middle of the defense.

Even though the 21 year-old is a bit raw, his power and energy make Barmore arguably the top defensive tackle in the class. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has Barmore ranked as the 20th best player on his overall draft board. Barmore would likely start immediately for Dallas, giving them a respectable rotation that would include Trysten Hill, Neville Gallimore, Antwaun Woods and Brent Urban.

75. Walker Little, OT, Stanford

With the Cowboy’s first pick in the third-round, Mel Kiper takes the reigns adds some depth to the tackle position.

Offensive line is a sneaky need for the Cowboys, who had major injury issues last season. Little missed nearly all of 2019 with a knee injury and opted out of last season, but he has a first-round tool set.

With both Tyron Smith and La’el Collins missing most of last season, Dallas would be wise to draft a young potential tackle of the future. With the expected return of both Smith and Collins and the signing of Ty Nsekhe, the 6-foot-7, 313 pounder would not be forced into the lineup and would have time to develop some needed play-strength. However, if two of Dallas’ top tackles were to go down, Little would be a upgrade over Brandon Knight and/or Terrance Steele. Little would be a pick that would pay dividends in the future.

99. Jamar Johnson, S, Indiana

Stephen Jones spoke earlier in the week about the Cowboys potentially selecting a safety early in the draft if the right player was available, Mel Kiper believes Johnson could be that player

A safety helps fill all of the Cowboys’ most immediate needs, as we’ve also given them a corner, defensive tackle and offensive tackle. Johnson could challenge Donovan Wilson and free-agent signing Damontae Kazee for a starting job.

While Johnson is not the most physical player, his strengths are his range, awareness and ball skills. He would likely find playing time in a rotation with Kazee, until he gets more comfortable in the NFL. While Dallas fans would understandably like to see a safety selected higher than pick 99, Johnson is a good player who fits exactly what Dan Quinn values in a free safety.

With four picks in the first three rounds the Dallas Cowboys came away with a corner, defensive tackle, offensive tackle and a safety. Those are four positions of need for Dallas and they added three players that would compete for starting jobs immediately.

If next weeks draft plays out remotely close to this, the Cowboys would be ecstatic. Fans should keep their fingers crossed that Dallas is graced with a little luck from the draft gods.

2020 NFL Draft: Day 1 recap with Round 2, Round 3 pick order

The Dallas Cowboys make a big splash in the first round by selecting wide receiver Cee Dee Lamb. A complete wrap up of round one.

The Dallas Cowboys went into the 2020 NFL Draft with plenty of directions the team could have went in at pick No. 17. The assumed first few picks came and went with Joe Burrow headed to Cincinnati, Chase Young being drafted by the Washington Redskins, and Jeffrey Okudah going to the Detroit Lions.

What Dallas didn’t see coming was that a premier wide receiver would fall right into their laps as they went on the clock. The Cowboys made a big offensive splash by taking Oklahoma stud wide receiver Cee Dee Lamb despite reports that the team was focused on defense.

On Day 2 the Cowboys have picks 51 and 82 to address their defensive needs if they choose.

Secondary help could be on the way in rounds two and three. Big names still remain on the board like safeties Xavier McKinney, Grant Delpit and Antoine Winfield, Jr. Cornerbacks Kristian Fulton and Trevon Diggs are also options. as are edge rushers A.J. Epenesa, Yetur Gross-Matos and Zack Baun.

There are plenty of options left for Dallas to explore. The splash has been made on offense in the first round with plenty of time and picks to address some of the Cowboys needs in 2020.
