49ers CB Richard Sherman fined for hit on Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett

Although no flag was thrown, 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman has been fined for his hit on Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett Week 10.

The Seattle Seahawks emerged victorious against the San Franciso 49ers and former teammate Richard Sherman last Monday night in Santa Clara.

The NFC West matchup came down to the wire in overtime, when Seahawks kicker Jason Myers was finally able to seal the deal with the game-winning field goal at the buzzer.

Good sportsmanship prevailed as Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson and Sherman exchanged jerseys on the field after the contest.

On Saturday, however, the NFL announced Sherman has been fined for his hit on Seahawks wide receiver, Tyler Lockett.

“49ers CB Richard Sherman was fined $28,075 for unnecessary roughness for lowering his head to initiate contact on his big hit of Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett in the second quarter,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted. “No flag was thrown.”

Here’s a closer look at the play in question – you be the judge.

The Seahawks have a bye this weekend but reconvene Monday for a bonus practice ahead of the Eagles Week 12.

Why are the Texans taking chances on former first-round cornerbacks?

The Houston Texans have acquired former first-round cornerbacks since the opening of free agency. What goes into their decisions?

The Houston Texans have added three former first-round cornerbacks on their roster in Bradley Roby, Gareon Conley, and Vernon Hargreaves. The first was a free agent signing in March, the second a midseason trade, and the third a waiver claim.

Coach Bill O’Brien provided reasons Friday as to why he thinks the Texans are the perfect organization to get the most out of top tier picks who weren’t so stellar with their original draft teams.

“I think part of it is what we’ve seen on film, how we feel like their skill set can fit with what we do, what we know about them relative to Gareon or Vernon or some of the guys that we brought in that we studied in the draft, Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, when they were coming out,” O’Brien said.

The Texans simply don’t look at the talent and follow through with the glint in their eye developed from watching highlights. The Houston personnel and scouting department goes through extensive homework and coordinates with the coaching staff to determine if the players would finally breakout with the Texans or if they’re truly busts.

“We do have a background with them,” said O’Brien. “We look at a lot of different data points. We look at a lot of different contractual situations, situations relative to where they are in their contract relative to are they still on their rookie deal, is it something where you’re just bringing a guy in for basically six games, do you want to do that, do you not want to do that.”

Ultimately, the Texans seek to make decisions that benefit the club, not add another collection to their cabinet of former college standouts.

“I don’t think it’s anything other than we feel like this guy could fit for our team, is this a good decision for our team, and if we believe it is — the consensus is it is — then we try to execute the deal.”

Broncos make 2 roster moves

The Broncos activated wide receiver Tim Patrick (hand) to the 53-man roster and placed cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) on injured reserve.

The Denver Broncos will activate wide receiver Tim Patrick (hand) from injured reserve to the 53-man roster, coach Vic Fangio announced Friday. Patrick is now eligible to play against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

To make room for Patrick on the active roster, Denver will place cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) on injured reserve, ending his season. It’s been a dissapointing year for Callahan, who hasn’t been able to fully recover from a foot injury that he suffered while playing for the Chicago Bears in 2018.

Callahan (5-9, 188 pounds) signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Broncos in March but didn’t play in any games season. If he is able to get healthy this offseason, the 28-year-old cornerback could still emerge as one of the team’s top cornerbacks in 2020. Callahan has totaled 123 tackles, four sacks and four interceptions since 2015.

Patrick (6-5, 212 pounds) broke his hand in Week 1 and missed the last eight games while on IR. It’s safe to say quarterback Brandon Allen is excited about the wide receiver’s return to the 53-man roster.

“He’s great,” Allen said Wednesday. “In the short time I’ve been with him he’s been great, obviously knows the offense. He’s been here and he’s a big, physical target. Any time you have two of those guys like Courtland [Sutton] and him it’s going to be a mismatch for a lot of defenses, and I think he’ll bring another element to our offense.”

Sutton (6-3, 218 pounds) is also excited about Patrick’s return.

“It’s exciting to have him back because he does so much,” Sutton said Wednesday. “He can run plays from the slot because he’s shifty. He can go make the big play on the sideline because he’s a big guy. He’s fast and he’s smart.

“Everything that you want out of receiver — [including] his size — he does it and he does it really, really well. It’s exciting to have him come back and I know everyone on our team is excited to have him back if he comes back this week.”

Denver’s 53-man roster and 10-man practice squad are now both full.

Texans unsure if CB Vernon Hargreaves will play against the Ravens

The Houston Texans are unsure if newly acquired cornerback Vernon Hargreaves will play against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The Houston Texans claimed cornerback Vernon Hargreaves off waivers on Wednesday. He walked through the canals of NRG Stadium on Thursday, though, he was not at the media portion of practice.

The Texans are unsure of Hargreaves’ ability to play on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Being that he found a home in Houston on Wednesday — after his cut by the Buccaneers on Tuesday — he is just beginning to adjust to his new team.

“What’s tough is the acclimation period, because it’s new terminology, it’s new teammates, it’s a new system, it’s new schedules and all of those. So, all of that — that acclimation period, that’s really tough and until he can get acclimated, he’s going to be a little off a little bit,” said defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel on Thursday. “But then once that period is over with, then he kind of falls into step with everybody else.”

Hargreaves’ acclimation to Houston and the Texans’ defensive scheme will depict whether or not he plays on Sunday. His status as a first-round pick in 2016 does not impact the decision to play him or not.

“I know that he was a number one draft choice, but just like anyone new that we bring in, you’ve got to put them out there and you’ve got to see what they can do and get a feel for them, what their personality is and those kind of thing,” Crennel said. “So, we’ll start doing that and then I’ll have a better opinion.”

A former Florida Gator, Hargreaves allowed a 108.6 passer rating in coverage in 2019 before his release. In 35 career games played, 33 starts, he has 19 pass deflections and a pair of interceptions.

It doesn’t matter how talented Hargreaves is, if he doesn’t know the defensive play calls, he is susceptible to looking like a deer in the headlights. Communication is key, not experience in Tampa Bay.

“He’s been a starter and he’s played in the league,” said Crennel. “So, you can take a starter and put him into the game. Now, will he know all the communication that’s necessary and all that?”

Simply put, by Crennel, the Texans are “not sure” if Hargreaves will play on Sunday. If he doesn’t, they will rely on a healthy cornerback group, with Gareon Conley, Johnathan Joseph and Bradley Roby expected to start.

Broncos injuries: Bryce Callahan likely headed for injured reserve

The Broncos are expected to place cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) on injured reserve, ending his season.

After cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) missed practice again Thursday, Broncos coach Vic Fangio said “it’s looking more and more” likely that the defensive back will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Callahan, 28, signed a three-year, $21 million contract with Denver in March. He has been sidelined with a foot injury all season.

Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick (hand) is expected to be activated from injured reserve to the 53-man roster this week and Denver will have to make a corresponding move to make room for him on the roster. The team might place Callahan on IR to create Patrick’s roster spot.

Broncos make 2 roster moves

The Broncos claimed former Patriots and Ravens cornerback/returner Cyrus Jones off waivers.

The Denver Broncos have waived cornerback Coty Sensabaugh to make room for newly acquired defensive back/returner Cyrus Jones, ESPN’s Field Yates first reported Wednesday afternoon. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Denver announced the move on Wednesday evening.

Sensabaugh (5-11, 187 pounds) joined the team in October and dressed for the last four games, totaling two tackles. He is 30 years old.

Jones (5-10, 200 pounds) was selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Alabama. He has spent time bouncing back and forth between the rosters of the Patriots and Baltimore Ravens since then, appearing mostly on special teams.

Jones has returned 12 punts for 113 yards this year, averaging 9.4 yards per return. Denver cutting a cornerback to make room for Jones likely means that Diontae Spencer‘s job is safe, at least for now. Spencer has averaged 8.2 yards per punt return this season and has caught five passes for 31 yards and rushed twice for 14 yards.

Jones, 25, is the second ex-Patriots cornerback the Broncos have acquired this season. Denver traded a sixth-round pick to New England in exchange for nickelback Duke Dawson in August.

Jones was waived by Baltimore earlier this week to make room for nose tackle Domata Peko, who played for the Broncos from 2017-2018.

Broncos injuries: Bryce Callahan held out of practice Wednesday

After practicing Tuesday, Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) was unable to practice Wednesday.

Denver Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan participated in practice Tuesday, which seemed like a good sign that he was making progress in his recovery from a foot injury. Unfortunately, the practice didn’t go well.

“Just OK, not great,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday when asked how the cornerback moved around in Tuesday’s practice. Callahan was held out of Wednesday’s practice but there’s a chance he might be able to practice Thursday.

Fangio didn’t rule out the possibility of Callahan being placed on injured reserve, which would end his season. Fangio also provided a positive update on wide receiver Tim Patrick (hand), who is expected to be activated from injured reserve to the 53-man roster this week.

“He looked good,” Fangio said. “I think he’ll be available to play this week.”

Texans claim CB Vernon Hargreaves off waivers

The Houston Texans claimed Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves off of waivers to bolster their injured cornerback group.

[jwplayer i1h4DOiV-ThvAeFxT]

The Houston Texans continue to rebuild their cornerback group mid-season. On Wednesday, the team added corner Vernon Hargreaves off of waivers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Hargreaves, 24, on Tuesday, two days after benching him for what coach Bruce Arians called a “lack of hustle.”

“After thoughtful consideration over the past few weeks, Bruce and I came to the conclusion that we needed to make this change,” Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said in a statement. “Decisions such as this are always difficult, but I felt it was in the best interest of our team to part ways with Vernon at this time and allow him to explore other opportunities. We are disappointed that it did not work out here for Vernon and we wish him continued success moving forward.”

Hargreaves, the No. 11 selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, started the season as Tampa Bay’s top cornerback. The team accepted his $9 million fifth-year option for 2020, reflecting that notion.

A former Florida Gator, Hargreaves measures in at 5-11, 204-pounds. He ran a 4.5-second 40-yard-dash at the 2016 NFL Combine.

Hargreaves has allowed a 108.6 passer rating in coverage in 2019, per Pro Football Reference. On the season, quarterbacks have thrown 578 yards and four touchdowns to the tune of a 69.1% completion rate on him, while he has reeled in one Week 1 interception.

The Texans will absorb the rest of Hargreaves’ rookie contract after claiming him on waivers. However, they are not tied down to his $9 million price tag in 2020. Unless he suffers a serious injury, the entirety of the one-year deal is not guaranteed.

Hargreaves joins a rebuilt, youth-infused cornerback group in Houston. He will join Gareon Conley, another first-round cornerback that did not last with his original NFL team.

To make room for Hargreaves, the Texans released cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Like Conley, Hargreaves gets a chance in Week 16 to show the Buccaneers they made a hasty mistake when the Texans play Tampa Bay on Dec. 21 at Raymond James Stadium.

Can the Texans count on CB Lonnie Johnson to play against the Ravens?

The Houston Texans have not had CB Lonnie Johnson since Week 8. Will he be ready to go against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11?

The Houston Texans have been thin at cornerback, so thin that the unit took a big hit when rookie Lonnie Johnson left the Week 8 encounter with a concussion.

Normally, when a rookie is injured, it doesn’t have an impact on the unit. But given how banged up the cornerback group was at that point, Johnson leaving the game had a big effect. He was also unavailable the next week as the Texans took on the Jacksonville Jaguars in London at Wembley Stadium.

Houston may get their rookie back for their Week 11 showdown with the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

At a minimum, Johnson is making progress to get out of the concussion protocol and help the Texans secondary.

The Texans played cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph, Gareon Conley, and Keion Crossen against the Jaguars. If the Texans are able to get back the 6-2, 213-pound second-round pick from Kentucky, it will help in their ability to lock down the Ravens’ passing game.

Jets should take a look at former Buccaneers CB Vernon Hargreaves

The Jets need cornerback help, and 2016 first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves could be the answer.

With the Jets woefully thin at cornerback, New York should take a look at the recently-released Vernon Hargreaves III to fill a position riddled by injury and poor play.

Hargreaves could be a low-risk, high-reward move by the Jets considering his youth and potential. The former 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft only recently turned 24 and was one of the top prospects coming out of Florida just three years ago. He opened his career with a stellar rookie season with the Buccaneers (76 tackles, nine passes defended and one interception), but injuries plagued Hargreaves the past two seasons and he was ultimately cut after a brutal beginning to 2019.

Bruce Arians and the Buccaneers were dismayed by Hargreaves’ lack of enthusiasm and effort this season, culminating in Arians benching Hargreaves after he didn’t hustle on a 55-yard pass play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10.

“He didn’t look like he was hustling to go in for a tackle,” Arians said of the play. “He was chasing somebody across the field, and he wasn’t running fast enough.”

Hargreaves, to his credit, didn’t back down from the criticism. He took full responsibility after the game for any perceived concerns about his effort.

“If that’s what coach saw that’s what he saw,” he said. “There’s no arguing with that – I need to hustle. Point blank. End of discussion.”

Hargreaves’ production has dropped off considerably since his rookie season and he has major injury issues – he missed all but one game in 2018 with a shoulder injury and seven games in 2017 with a hamstring injury. His 2019 hasn’t been much better, as he’s allowed a 111.9 passer rating when targeted (51st among cornerbacks), 12.3 yards per reception (37th), 5.7 receptions per game (77th), a catch rate of 63.8 percent (49th) and burned on 3.8 percent of his targets (71st), per PlayerProfiler.com

Those numbers are all terrible. Sadly, they’re also better than every other Jets cornerback other than Brian Poole, who plays 61 percent of his snaps in the slot.

The Jets need a player like Hargreaves to play on the outside, especially if Darryl Roberts can’t play. With Roberts hobbled by a calf injury and Trumaine Johnson on injured reserve, the only healthy cornerbacks the Jets have on the roster are Poole, Nate Hairston (who was benched in the second quarter of Sunday’s game), sixth-round rookie Bless Austin, and undrafted rookies Arthur Maulet and Kyron Brown. Austin played well for the Jets in his first game of the year, but he can’t be expected to fix a Jets secondary that’s been leaky all season.

Hargreaves won’t be a game-changer for the Jets, but he’ll be an infusion of young talent in a depleted secondary. He’ll also be looking to prove himself in search of another contract. The Buccaneers picked up Hargreaves’ $9.954 million fifth-year option this offseason, but it’s only guaranteed for injury. If the Jets claim him, they could easily try him out for a few games and see how he fares in the offseason before committing to that price tag for the 2020 season.

Hargreaves also has a few former teammates on the Jets – Poole and safety Marcus Maye both played with Hargreaves in Gainesville in 2015.

The Jets are grasping at straws in the secondary right now. Hargreaves isn’t the player many expected him to be after his rookie season, but he’s young and experienced and could be a short-term solution for the Jets defense heading into the back-half of its schedule.
