Robert Saleh confirms Connor McGovern out for season

Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed center Connor McGovern is done for the season after undergoing season-ending surgery on his dislocated kneecap.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh gave a few injury updates Monday. Among them was confirming center Connor McGovern’s season is over with a knee injury.

McGovern suffered a dislocated kneecap in Week 8 against the Giants and was placed on injured reserve. Saleh confirmed Monday that McGovern had season-ending surgery.

The Jets re-signed McGovern in April to help stabilize the center position. McGovern was the only offensive player to play every snap last season. He was the Week 1 starter at center and was there until his injury in Week 8. Rookie Joe Tippmann, who worked his way into the lineup at right guard in Week 3, took over at center in Week 9 and hasn’t looked back. With McGovern’s news Monday, the Jets’ plans for Tippmann after drafting him in the second round in April have already come to fruition. They did a few weeks ago, but now it feels officially official.

McGovern is set to be a free agent in the offseason. The 30-year-old played four seasons in New York. He came to the Jets as a free agent in 2020, signing a three-year, $27 million contract after spending his first four seasons with the Broncos.

PFF: 5 highest-graded Bills players on offense in Week 12

You’ll be shocked to see Josh Allen:

The Buffalo Bills narrowly lost in overtime against the Philadelphia Eagles, 37-34, in their Week 12 matchup on Sunday afternoon.

The Bills (6-6) had a few players that stood out above the rest in this one. On offense, the Bills were led by quarterback Josh Allen for the second game in a row as he took over a new-look offense with Joe Brady supporting as the offensive coordinator against a league-best Eagles team that has lost only one game this season.

Despite a great performance, Buffalo didn’t have the final push to secure a win. But in terms of the players who got them close to a win, the Bills will hope such efforts will remain throughout the rest of the 2023 season as the aim to secure a postseason spot.

According to Pro Football Focus, they’ll need these players to continue to play at a high level.

Here are the five highest-graded Bills players on offense against the Eagles (10-1) according to PFF’s metrics:

Jets placing Connor McGovern, Wes Schweitzer on injured reserve

The Jets are placing Connor McGovern and Wes Schweitzer on injured reserve.

The injury bug hit the Jets hard on Sunday, particularly on the offensive line. A pair of interior offensive linemen are heading to injured reserve.

Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters Monday that center Connor McGovern (knee) and guard Wes Schweitzer (calf) are both being placed on injured reserve. Both will miss at least the next four games. They can return for New York’s Week 13 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Saleh said both have a chance to return this season. On McGovern, he said McGovern isn’t “out of the woods” in regards to whether he needs surgery or not but it’s a best-case scenario based on how the injury initially seemed on Sunday.

Fortunately for the Jets, Joe Tippmann may be back this week, as well as tackle Duane Brown. The Jets will decide over the next few days on those two. Brown is still on injured reserve and the team has yet to open his practice window.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Saleh confirmed that defensive tackle Al Woods is done for the season with an Achilles injury.

Connor McGovern week-to-week with dislocated kneecap

Connor McGovern week-to-week with dislocated kneecap

Connor McGovern suffered a dislocated kneecap during Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

McGovern reportedly has a chance of avoiding surgery but does have some damage done. McGovern is going to seek a second opinion on the injury and is considered week-to-week.

McGovern left the game during the first half and was replaced by Wes Schweitzer, who shifted over from right guard to center. Not long after, Schweitzer went down with an injury and the Jets were forced to turn to practice-squad elevation Xavier Newman at center, after he already had to replace Schweitzer at right guard. That put Billy Turner in at right guard.

Avoiding surgery would certainly be good news for McGovern and the Jets following Sunday. They’re also hopeful that Joe Tippmann will be back soon from his quad injury, maybe even being able to play next Monday against the Chargers. A positive update, nonetheless, for the Jets.

Connor McGovern: Jets want to get payback for Nathaniel Hackett vs. Broncos

Connor McGovern said the Jets want to help Nathaniel Hackett get payback against his former team in the Broncos on Sunday.

Ever since Sean Payton made comments about Nathaniel Hackett back in July, everyone had the Week 5 matchup between the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos circled on their calendar. While the game had more excitement surrounding it before Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury, the Jets are still plenty motivated ahead of Sunday’s contest.

Connor McGovern, the starting center for the Jets, hasn’t forgotten about what was said about Hackett.

“He got thrown under the bus — and then they tried to drag him under the bus,” McGovern told ESPN. “We wanted to rally around him from the start. He’s such a good guy. I don’t know how you want to say this — the opportunity he has — but we want to make the most of him being our play caller.

The drama began when Payton called out Hackett for the coaching job he did during his tenure with the Broncos. Hackett was hired by the Broncos before the 2022 season and he didn’t even coach the entire season, producing a 4-11 record before being fired.

Payton has since walked back his comments about Hackett, but the damage had already been done. Hackett hasn’t spoken about the situation much, though, McGovern said the team wants to send a message for their offensive coordinator.

“That’s not the type of guy he is,” said McGovern, who played with the Broncos from 2016 to 2019. “He has put his head down to grind. He doesn’t let stuff affect him. But that organization did him dirty and we definitely want to allow him to get some payback.”

Many have questioned whether or not Hackett is a talented coach or if he is a product of being someone associated with Rodgers dating back to their time together on the Green Bay Packers. All that being said, it’s clear McGovern and other members of the Jets love playing for their new offensive coordinator.
