Everything Steve Sarkisian said after the Baylor loss

Steve Sarkisian found himself answering the same questions for the third week in a row.

First-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his team have found themselves in a position all too familiar.

Texas is in the midst of a three-game losing streak, but to make matters worse, in each of the losses the Longhorns were leading by double-digits at one point. It was reported that Sarkisian screened an inspirational rock climbing movie to inspire the team to be strong-willed and finish the job, but it was to no avail.

Baylor had a great defensive game plan which was to sell out on the run, and not allow Bijan Robinson to make big plays, while forcing Casey Thompson to beat them in the air. Something he clearly cannot do. The Bears’ defense held Robinson to his lowest total of rushing yards with 43, and also limited him to a season low 2.5 yards per carry.

Meanwhile, the passing game was atrocious, as Thompson was throwing off balance seemingly every throw, and the receivers could not catch a cold if they tried. Games are never lost or won by individual plays, but there were certainly some ill-timed plays that did not go in favor of Texas that contributed.

After throwing off no feet like he was Kobe Bryant shooting a fadeaway, Thompson led a wide open Xavier Worthy directly out of bounds instead of for a touchdown if the throw would have been remotely close.

Joshua Moore had probably the worst game of his career, as he dropped a touchdown, fumbled in the red zone, and then dropped a pass that led to an interception. Marcus Washington also had a poorly timed drop when the Longhorns had one of their final chances to tie the game, but the game ended with Thompson forcing a pass to Worthy who was heavily covered.

In terms of defense, they finally held someone under 200 yards rushing. Not really, they held Baylor to 199, and if it wasn’t for a miscommunication on one late hand off they would have surpassed the mark. The defense as usual started out strong in the first half, but was exposed in the second half, and also generated no pass rush. It has been the same tired story with this defense all season.

Special teams should never be talked about, but here we are, as Cameron Dicker decided to or was told to try and fake a punt on 4th and 11, and made it all of two yards.

Sarkisian found himself talking to the media after another embarrassing loss due to the disaster that was his football team, so let’s take a look at what he said.

Despite loss, Gators find bright spot in sophomore’s three takeaways vs Georgia

Lost in all the talk about Florida’s disastrous turnovers on Saturday was safety Rashad Torrence getting three turnovers of his own.

One of Florida’s biggest problems this year has been turnovers. Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson have combined for 14 interceptions on the year, and the Gators defense rarely gets on the better side of the turnover differential. Although turnovers are what ultimately cost Florida the game against Georgia on Saturday, defensive back Rashad Torrence had a career day with three takeaways of his own.

Torrence, a sophomore from Atlanta, has stepped up this year with injuries plaguing the Florida defense. He’s second on the team in total tackles and first on the team in solo tackles. After nabbing two passes from Georgia’s Stetson Bennet on Saturday, Torrence jumped into the team lead for interceptions. He also picked up a fumble recovery after Jeremiah Moon knocked the ball loose.

“I credit those three turnovers to the whole 11 people on the field, all 11 players on the field at the time,” Torrence said. “I wasn’t able to make that pick without certain pressures, certain covers. We’re just building off of that. Whether I get three or a D-linemen gets three, the defense got three at the end of the day.”

It’s impressive to hear Torrence understand the bigger picture so well at such a young age, especially with Kaiir Elam likely headed to the NFL next year. That kind of maturity will help get the defense back on track through any personnel or coaching changes that may occur after the season. It also makes Torrence a very coachable player.

After catching his first interception, Torrence ran out of the end zone and was tackled at Florida’s 2-yard line. The misplay is somewhat excusable considering it was Torrence’s first career interception, but he explained his thought process on the play anyway.

“As I got the pick, I know I didn’t get it in the endzone,” he said. “I knew if I got tackled in the endzone, that would be two points for the other team. So, my first instinct was to get it out of the endzone. That’s what I did.”

A start on the 20-yard line may have prevented the start of a three-turnover sequence that ultimately did Florida in, but allowing the Bulldogs to score could’ve ignited the fire all the same. And it’s hard to knock a guy who had as many takeaways in one game as the rest of the team combined over the last five.

Torrence’s play provided some hope for the future of Florida’s defense. It may not have been perfect, but it’s something to build on and the Gators are going to keep fighting.

“Just keep playing football,” he said. “I know it’s a lot of outside and even maybe some inside heads, but we as a team are going to keep playing football. As many games that you’ll give us, that’s the games we are going to play.”

AFCA Coaches Poll Week 9: Michigan State, Notre Dame on the rise

Gators receive zero votes in USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after loss to Georgia

Two and a half disastrous minutes of football on Saturday lost Florida the game and all support it had left in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Florida was two score underdog going into the game against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday, but things stayed close until the final 2:30 of the first half. Anthony Richardson turned the ball over three times in his first start for the Gators, and the Bulldogs capitalized on each turnover with a touchdown.

What could have been a close game at halftime turned into a massacre, and Florida lost any support it had left in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll as a result. Florida earned points from voters in each of the last two weeks since dropping out of the top 25, but the loss to Georgia was convincing enough to leave the Gators off ballots this week.

Aside from Florida’s record, the quarterback situation is getting worse by the week as it became clear that Anthony Richardson still had much to learn before being a trusted starter for the Gators. Had those final minutes in the second quarter gone any other way, confidence in Richardson and Florida is likely a little higher.

The good news is that the Gators have a rather light back end of the schedule. Assuming that the offense turns the ball over less against worse defenses, Florida could work its way back into the voters’ hearts if they can win out. However, reentry to the top 25 seems like a longshot at this point.

Alabama stayed at No. 3 after having the week off, and Texas A&M jumped up two spots to No. 12 without playing a game. Auburn’s upset over Ole Miss landed the two right next to each other at Nos. 14 and 15, with the Tigers naturally in front. Kentucky’s upset loss to Mississippi State has them down five spots to No. 17, and Arkansas finished outside of the top 25 with 65 points.

No sign of Texas in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The Longhorns probably won’t be in one of these until next season…

After squandering yet another double-digit lead to Baylor in Week 9, Texas has lost three straight games and find themselves sitting at 4-4.

It is no surprise that the Longhorns are not ranked in any polls this week, as it is likely they will not see a ranking next to their name until the end of the season. That’s only if they win out, and win a bowl game. However, it is also just as likely they will not see a ranking next to their name until next season, due to how bad this team has been in these past few weeks.

It seems this team has a mental fragility problem, and cannot handle any sort of adversity. They are also lacking the playmakers needed on both sides of the ball, as constant bad reads by Casey Thompson, drops by the receivers, and the defense not generating an ounce of pressure has been a reoccurring theme.

Although Texas isn’t ranked, there are a ton of movers and shakers within the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Here is how the coaches view the top-25 teams:

No. 11 Notre Dame outlasts North Carolina: 5 Instant Takeaways

It never seems to be as easy as you’d like for Notre Dame but it’s another win and 7-1 on the year. What is your biggest takeaway from Saturday’s win?

Notre Dame’s offense seemed to have taken a step over their last two games entering Saturday’s date with North Carolina, as it again rolled to a 44-point scoring output in a 44-34 victory.

The win, highlighted by Kyren Williams heroics on one of the best runs you’ll see, moved Notre Dame to 7-1 on the year as they enter November likely ranked in the nation’s top-10 and a likely favorite in all of their remaining four games.

Here are five instant takeaways from Notre Dame’s 44-34 win over the Tar Heels:

WATCH: Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams breaks off 91-yard TD run

Watch Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams race 91 yards to the end zone against North Carolina

Notre Dame pulled off a key win over North Carolina on Saturday night, and running back Kyren Williams led the way with an impressive performance.

Williams racked up 199 yards on just 22 carries, averaging nine yards per attempt. That number was bolstered by a 91-yard touchdown run, one that had Williams completely reverse his field before blazing past the entire Tar Heels defense.

One of the top running back prospects in the 2022 NFL draft class, Williams helped his draft stock by showing off his big-play ability in this game.

USC WR Drake London carted off field after leg injury

USC wide receiver Drake London was carted off the field Saturday night after suffering a leg injury

One of the top wide receiver prospects in college football appears to have suffered a significant injury.

USC’s Drake London went down awkwardly and the end of yet another touchdown reception Saturday night against Arizona, and had to be carted off the field.

London has been dominant so far this season, putting up huge numbers for the Trojans and proving himself to be among the nation’s most talented pass-catchers. He’s projected to be one of the first pass-catchers off the board in the 2022 NFL draft.

5 takeaways: What to make of Florida’s blowout loss to Georgia

Florida very narrowly avoided its first shutout in more than 30 years in a lopsided loss to the Bulldogs

For nearly 30 full minutes, it looked like the Gators were going to give the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs a lot more than they (and many in the media) bargained for. Florida trailed 3-0 late in the first half, but its defense was playing well and the game was well within grasp.

Then, the last two-and-change minutes of the first half happened. Three consecutive turnovers from quarterback Anthony Richardson, who struggled quite a bit in his first career start, allowed the Bulldogs to score three touchdowns before Florida even had time to catch its breath.

UF went to the locker room down 24-0 and that was about all she wrote. Coach Dan Mullen‘s squad managed to avoid ending the NCAA-record 417 game scoring streak which dates back to 1988, but that was about the only moment of note for the team in a 34-7 loss to UGA. It wasn’t quite the beatdown that the score would indicate, but the points count all the same, and now the Gators fall to 4-4 (2-4 SEC) on the season with no hope of finishing with a winning record in conference play.

This season has not gone to plan for Florida, and things could get even worse if it drops another game. For now, though, here are five takeaways from this loss.

Pitt QB Kenny Pickett breaks Dan Marino’s career TD record

Pitt’s Kenny Pickett put up huge numbers despite a loss Saturday, taking down a legend in the record books along the way

Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett is putting together a Heisman-worthy season in 2021, and he’s sending his NFL draft stock through the roof along the way.

Though his Panthers fell short Saturday in an upset road loss to Miami, Pickett still put up huge numbers, and managed to make some school history, as well.

Pickett threw for 519 yards and three touchdowns, breaking Dan Marino’s career touchdown record at Pitt.

Though he was somewhat of an afterthought in this year’s quarterback class, Pickett has made the most of a wide-open race to be the top passer selected in the 2022 NFL draft.
