Final thoughts on Oklahoma Sooners vs. Temple Owls

The Oklahoma Sooners get set to open the season against the Temple Owls and here are this week’s final thoughts.

It’s football time in Oklahoma, and the Sooners are stepping into a monumental season in college football. The Sooners enter 2024 in unfamiliar territory as a team with something to prove.

No longer are they the conference powerhouse, but instead will fight to earn their place at the SEC’s grown-up table alongside Georgia and Alabama. But that’s what this program has been about throughout its existence. The Sooners are one of the big boys of college football, a blue blood that’s had as much success as anyone.

But, like anything in life, the Sooners will have to earn the respect of their new conference brethren. And that’s the way Brent Venables wants it.

As the Sooners get set to kick off the 2024 season, here is this week’s final thoughts.

Offensive Line Time

So much has been said about the Oklahoma Sooners offensive line. Sure, they don’t return a primary starter from a year ago. But no reason to fret. The Sooners have had productive offensive line play for a long time and are coached by one of the best in the business in [autotag]Bill Bedenbaugh[/autotag].

It will come together and this week against Temple provides the first opportunity to see the unit begin to gel. [autotag]Michael Tarquin[/autotag], [autotag]Jacob Sexton[/autotag], [autotag]Branson Hickman[/autotag], [autotag]Febechi Nwaiwu[/autotag], and [autotag]Jake Taylor[/autotag] have a nice mix of blue-chip talent and experience.

Believe in Bedenbaugh.

Need for Speed

The Oklahoma Sooners will start two legitimate speedsters this week against the Temple Owls when [autotag]Brenen Thompson[/autotag] and [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] take the field. Burks showed off his big-play ability in the spring game and Thompson, though in a limited role, averaged more than 34 yards per reception on his seven catches last season because of his track speed.

The Temple defense is going to have a difficult time keeping track of Burks and Thompson, who will blow down the field like an Oklahoma wind on the prairie.

Welcome Back JoBa

[autotag]Jovantae Barnes[/autotag] got off to a great start to his collegiate career when he emerged as the backup to [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag] during the 2022 season. He ran for over 500 yards and looked headed for a jump in production as a true sophomore in 2023. However, injuries kept Barnes from getting going and last season was pretty much a wash.

In 2024, Barnes has stayed healthy and looks primed to reprise his role from the 2022 Cheez-It Bowl, where he and fellow 2022 four-star signee [autotag]Gavin Sawchuk[/autotag] operated in the lead running back tandem.

Sawchuk may get the start, but Barnes is going to get a lot of work in 2024 and the two will complement each other well in the Sooners rushing attack.

Jackson Arnold Show

The former five-star quarterback, Elite 11 winner, and Gatorade National Player of the Year is set to take the stage for his first season as a starter, and the anticipation has reached a fever pitch. [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] has all the talent in the world to be Oklahoma’s next great quarterback.

With an entire offseason to work with his wide receivers and to familiarize himself with [autotag]Seth Littrell[/autotag]’s offense, look for a much more comfortable and decisive heading into his second career start. Though the level of competition isn’t quite what Arnold faced in the Alamo Bowl, there’s still a lot to be gleaned from this game against Temple.

Defensive Dominance

The Oklahoma Sooners’ defense will lead the way for the Sooners in 2024. And that starts against Temple. The Owls are one of the worst teams in the country in SP+ offensive ranking and don’t have a settled situation at quarterback.

Oklahoma’s depth and talent are so much greater on the defensive side of the ball. The Sooners should be able to dominate the line of scrimmage, making life incredibly easy for the back seven. Look for this game to resemble what OU did to Arkansas State last year.

Brent’s Guys

It’s year three of the [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] era. All but a handful of guys on the roster committed and signed to play for Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners after his arrival.

This team has his fingerprints all over it on both sides of the ball. It’s a team marked by energy, intensity, and determination. They may not be the most talented team in the country, but they’ll be one of the hardest working and toughest teams in the nation.

Young Guns

The [autotag]2024 recruiting class[/autotag] has already made a name for themselves with the way they’ve worked this offseason to get ready for OU’s first year in the SEC. [autotag]Jayden Jackson[/autotag] earned a starting spot on the defensive line. Venables praised David Stone’s work ethic. [autotag]Taylor Tatum[/autotag] and [autotag]Eddy Pierre-Louis[/autotag] received rave reviews for the work they put in after arriving this summer.

We still need to see that group on the field. What they look like in year one isn’t a finished product. But from what we’ve seen, the Sooners coaching staff won’t have to wonder if this crew is going to work for what they want.

Tonight, we get our first glimpse of what this class is made of.

Joel Klatt has high expectations for the Oklahoma Sooners

Regardless of schedule, the expectations don’t change for the Oklahoma Sooners according to college football analyst Joel Klatt.

The Oklahoma Sooners are embarking on a new journey as they enter the SEC this fall. Ad nauseam, we’ve discussed the challenges that approach and the difficulty of this year’s schedule.

Regardless of the schedule, the Sooners are a team with high expectations, and national analysts recall that reality. Few programs have been as successful as the Sooners over the course of the sport’s history. College football analyst Joel Klatt shared on his show that he still has high expectations for the Oklahoma Sooners.

“This is a proud program, and my definition for success for Oklahoma this year is the College Football Playoff, and that’s pulling in the reins,” Klatt explained. “Because, again, there’s only one Oklahoma, and I believe that. That’s a proud program, and they’ve got a lot going for them this year with Brent Venables. They should be better on defense. I like their quarterback. He fits what they’ve got on the outside with their wide receivers. Oh, you should have a good year. They’ve got a tough schedule. I get it. You split those six games that I’ve talked about, go three and three, you’re nine and three, and you probably go to the College Football Playoff.”

To make the playoff, the Oklahoma Sooners would need to go at least 9-3. Klatt argues if they split games against Tennessee, Texas, Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama, and LSU, they should be a playoff team. Though the schedule has been talked about a lot as a reason the Sooners could struggle, it also gives them a strong strength of schedule argument. But still, this is a team that will have a chance to win 10 games because it’s a good team.

The Oklahoma Sooners have questions, but few college football teams enter a season without some question marks. But the Sooners have a lot of answers, especially on the defensive side of the ball, with a very talented young quarterback, and a plethora of skill players with big-play potential.

If the Sooners offensive line comes together, they very well may compete for a playoff spot in 2024. While the schedule will be tough, Oklahoma will provide challenges to everyone on their schedule as well.

Brent Venables and the Sooners have been building for this and in short order, the Oklahoma Sooners will get the opportunity to prove what they’re capable of.

Week 1 Preview: Big 12 Games to Watch

Which Big 12 matchups in Week 1 should you tune in for?

It is finally time to kick off the college football season in the Big 12. This will be the final year that includes the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns. However, they will add Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah in 2024.

Before we get to next season, our focus will remain on the 2023 season for the Big 12. In Week 1, there are plenty of matchups to keep an eye on. The Longhorns will host the Rice Owls, while the Sooners will take on Arkansas State.

Neither of those matchups was able to crack our list of the top games, but we begin our list of top matchups with West Virginia.

Countdown 2 Kickoff: Six storylines to follow this season

Deion Sanders, the CFP, and the Pac-12 are among the top storylines for the upcoming season.

As we continue counting down to the start of the college football season with kick-off in week 0, College Sports Wire is diving into the top storylines of the season.

The storylines for the upcoming season begin with the self-imposed penalty from Michigan, which will suspend Jim Harbaugh for the first three games of the season. This is likely to help their case for avoiding a much larger punishment for the Level I and Level II infractions committed by the football program.

Another set of storylines to monitor will be how the new hires from the past coaching carousel and the second-year coaches perform in 2023. Some coaches including Mario Cristobal and Brent Venables, are looking for better results at major programs. While Matt Rhule looks to return the Nebraska Cornhuskers to their former glory.

As the march to the season continues, we have six major storylines to follow.

Report: Indianapolis Colts interested in bringing back UGA great Justin Houston

Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports that the Indianapolis Colts are interested in resigning former Georgia linebacker Justin Houston.

Former Georgia linebacker Justin Houston is one of the top remaining NFL free agents. After spending eight years with the Kansas City Chiefs, earning his way to four Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro selections, Houston signed a two-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018.

Houston appeared in 16 games and recorded 8.0 sacks last season, good enough to rank No. 21 among sack leaders.

According to The Athletic’s Stephen Holder, the Colts are still interested in bringing the 10-year veteran back to Indianapolis in 2021.

Pro Football Focus detailed Houston’s status in their free agent rankings.

“The big question for Houston is what he has left at this point after 10 years in the league. He doesn’t have the same burst and power that made him the fifth-best pass-rushing edge defender in the NFL during the last decade, and he finished 2020 with the lowest pass-rush grade of his career. Houston still flashes his ability, as he can get offensive tackles off-balanced with his length and good technique, but the days of accumulating 50-plus pressures in a season appear to be in the past. Even in the run game, Houston took a step back in 2020. On the other hand, Houston is just one year removed from an 87.1 overall grade while playing just over 40 plays per game, and he may have something to offer in a rotational role.”

Houston was an absolute problem for SEC offenses while at Georgia. As a junior in 2010, Houston led all linebackers in sacks with 10 and was named First-Team All-American and First Team All-SEC.

Les Miles Out As Kansas Head Football Coach

Les Miles Out At Kansas

Kansas has parted ways with head coach Les Miles following a report by LSU detailing allegations of inappropriate behavior during his time as that school’s head coach. Miles was first placed on administrative leave by Kansas, but now he’s done with the announcement coming on Monday night.

Mike DeBord will be the interim head coach until the school finds a permanent replacement for Miles.

This was supposed to be the job that resurrected Miles’ career.

At LSU, Miles went 114-34 with a national championship in 2007 and another trip to the national title game in 2011, losing to Alabama but finishing second in both polls.

LSU was okay in the four years after the loss to the Tide, but he went 37-14 during the span as the team became an also-ran in the SEC West. He was fired after a 2-2 starting 2016 – helped by a last second controversial loss to Auburn – and that was it.

Kansas hired him in 2019, but he went just 3-18 in his two seasons and 1-16 in the Big 12. Last year’s team was outscored 414-142 with only one game – a 16-13 loss to Texas Tech – decided by fewer than 15 points.

The 2019 team shocked Boston College on the road and beat Texas Tech 37-34, but closed out the season with a four-game losing streak by a combined score of 171-60.

And now Kansas has to find a head coach to try turning this around in a hurry.

The Jayhawks haven’t won more than three games in a season since 2009, and they haven’t had a winning season since 2008.
