Michigan State will kickoff the 2021 season as an underdog, according to BetMGM, The King of Sportsbooks.

BetMGM has posted betting lines for a handful of season opening match-ups including Michigan State’s road trip to Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 3. The Spartans are currently listed as a 5.5-point underdog against the Wildcats.

The Spartans got the best of the Wildcats this past season in Mel Tucker’s first season as Michigan State’s head coach. Michigan State was heavy underdogs in that match-up so maybe the Spartans can once again surprise some folks with another upset of the Wildcats.

Kickoff between the Spartans and Wildcats is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3 at 9 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Wisconsin football barely favored over Michigan according to BetMGM

The Badgers and Wolverines are expected to to play a close one

According to BetMGM, Wisconsin football is not as heavy of a favorite as you may think against Michigan this Saturday.

[lawrence-related id=24565]

The Badgers open as just 1.5 point favorites, with the moneyline set at -120. That means that a $12 dollar bet on Wisconsin to win, would net you $10 dollars of profit.

Despite the way the 1-2 Michigan Wolverines have looked early in the year, there are arguably more questions for the Badgers as they head to the Big House having not played the past two weeks. According to the Big Ten timeline for a positive COVID-19 test, Wisconsin should have starting QB Graham Mertz back in action just in time for Saturday.

How will Wisconsin respond with limited practice time and game reps? Do you value the fact that Michigan has played every week, or the fact that they have looked nowhere near the team people thought they could be coming into the year?

One piece of advice with seeing this line: If you like Wisconsin, hop on them now. Even with the questions surrounding the Badgers and their personnel, if the game is played on Saturday it would be hard to see the public money not coming in on an overall better football team who is barely favored. If the public is heavily on the Badgers, we could see this line closing on Saturday with UW as a three or four point favorite.

Georgia vs Alabama Fearless Prediction, Game Preview, Preseason Version

Georgia vs Alabama early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

Georgia vs Alabama early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football game months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, 3) no one has ANY clue how to get sports going again, and 4) we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

You can bet now at BetMGM on a whole lot of college football games – including going really insane looking at lines in November – with the possibility of hitting something big.

We’ll be diving in a whole lot deeper when we do this for real just before the season – crossing fingers that there is one. But for now …

Georgia vs Alabama Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Georgia Will Win

The defensive front seven should be in place to hold up against the pounding that Alabama is going to try to apply.

Georgia might have lost a whole slew of parts to the NFL, but the defense was hardly gutted. A few good starters are done – including the starters on the front three – but there’s going to be a strong enough rotation to hold up against a Tide O that’s going to start out the season trying to flatten everyone.

The Bulldog secondary, though, will be the strength early on. It might have been hit for 230 passing yards or more in five of the last seven games last season, and it’ll give up its share of big plays to this wonderful Bama receiving corps, but it’s not going to get ripped up.

It’s going to be one of the nation’s best defenses after getting dates against Virginia and East Tennessee State to tune-up, but …

[vertical-gallery id=512537]

Why Alabama Will Win

Just how quickly will that Georgia O line come together?

It’s Georgia, so there’s more NFL talent about to rise up and produce, but four starters are gone from last year’s line, the backfield has to hope the new stars are ready for the massive game, and the passing attack that was game-managed throughout last season has to be ready to keep up if this gets into any sort of a shootout.

It might not have been a vintage Alabama killer D last year, but the youth movement should rise up early on against the still-emerging Dawg O.

Getting back LB Dylan Moses won’t hurt.

On the other side, the Tide offensive line is expected to return four starters to pave the way for Najee Harris and Brian Robinson when, arguably, the nation’s best receiving corps isn’t trying to hit the home run. Talent-wise, Georgia can matchup with Bama, but experience will matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Assuming it’s Jamie Newman taking over the Georgia quarterbacking job, will he be ready to be the best offensive player on the field? That’s what he might have to be to pull this off.

He’ll be good, but the offense won’t get enough out of the ground game to get by.

Be somewhat shocked if this isn’t a good defensive battle – at least for a little while. Bama will win with experience and home field playing big roles, but looking several months ahead – again, this will be done in far more detail once the time comes – that’s an awfully big early line considering how strong the Dawg D should be.

Georgia’s NFL talent will keep this close, and it should be a fantastic game in what might be the SEC Championship preview, but not having new-Indianapolis Colt kicker Rodrigo Blankenship will be a factor.

Texas vs LSU Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Texas Will Win

Does LSU have anyone left from last year’s all-timer of a powerhouse?

Yeah, ha ha, very funny, but seriously, the Tigers not only had 14 players drafted by the NFL, but they gave up one player for every single position other than kicker and punter.

That doesn’t even count the free agent acquisitions.

Of course this is still a very good, very talented team with a whole lot of athleticism and next-level skill, and there’s a warm-up against UTSA to get some parts of this whole thing going, but there’s still going to be a whole lot of work to do. Just three starters are back on offense, five starters are back on D, and this is a good Texas team rolling on into town.

[vertical-gallery id=512292]

Why LSU Will Win

Is the new LSU starting quarterback – likely Myles Brennan – going to be Joe Burrow? Nah, but he’s still going to be be terrific with Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall to throw to.

Justin Jefferson was the star who killed the Longhorns last year with three touchdowns, but he’s off being a Minnesota Viking. Chase and Marshall combined for 14 catches for 270 yards and a score against a mediocre Longhorn secondary that loses its top guy, safety Brandon Jones.

No, this might not be the 2019 LSU team, but it’s still going to be special.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas gave LSU its biggest push of last year in a 45-38 loss. Sam Ehlinger threw for 401 yards and four scores – and ran for a touchdown – and it took a brilliant game by Joe Burrow and 22 points to pull it off.

This year’s Texas team is better, and this year’s LSU team is going to be – worse is sort of the wrong word – rebuilding.

Both teams will have a major attitude with something big to prove. At home, LSU pulls out another thriller between these two.

Ohio State vs Oregon Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Ohio State Will Win

It stinks to bring the real world into a sporting event, but …

If this really goes down, the huge advantage of the Autzen Stadium crowd almost certainly won’t be a part of the equation.

When it’s rocking and rolling, it’s one of the loudest stadiums in college football, but Oregon governor Kate Brown has already come up with the preemptive strike against large gatherings through September.

That doesn’t mean there can’t be a football game – the University of Oregon is expected to be back open this fall – but it’s probably not going to be anything close to what everyone was hoping for when this matchup was first created.

On the field, the last thing a new starting quarterback – like, most likely, Oregon’s Tyler Shough – needs is a rebuilding O line trying to deal with Ohio State.

Likely 2021 top five overall pick Penei Sewell is back at left tackle, but the rest of the Duck offensive line is undergoing a total overhaul. The Ohio State defensive line might be replacing almost everyone, but the reserves should be ahead of the linemen on the other side.

The Buckeye offense is replacing a few key parts, too, but the line should be fine, the receiving corps will still be great, and Justin Fields is still Justin Fields.

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks are building up the talent level with their recruiting classes getting to a level that can at least hang with a team like Ohio State. No, they don’t have as many big-time guys across the board like the Buckeyes do, but they’re not far off.

The nation’s ninth-best defense last year with the Pac-12’s best pass rush returns loaded. Overall, 11 of the top 13 tacklers are expected back, and Kayvon Thibodeaux is quickly growing into a Chase Young-like talent to lead a D that brings the pressure from all sides.

The athletes are there. Oregon isn’t going to be blown away by the Ohio State speed, 11 of the top 13 pass catchers are back to help out Shough, and the depth – while young and still developing – is there to keep everyone fresh.

What’s Going To Happen

Welcome to Trey Sermon.

It’s going to be a weird environment with – potentially – this being strange in so many ways, but it’s still football.

On the road, Ohio State will rely on its superstar quarterback, it’s big – if relatively inexperienced – offensive line, and the backfield tandem of Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon along with Master Teague to pound and pound some more.

Oregon will get its shots in. Tyler Shough is the real deal, the weapons are in place to push a talented group of new Buckeye starting defensive backs, and this won’t be a defensive struggle. But when Ohio State needs to blast away for a scoring drive to take control of the game, it will.

It’s the first meeting between the two since the Buckeyes won the first College Football Playoff National Championship at the end of the 2014 season, and it’ll be a better game.

Clemson vs Louisville Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Louisville Will Win

There’s not going to be any sort pressure on the Cardinal side – likely No. 1 Clemson is supposed to win this in a walk. The high-powered UofL team should be able to turn it loose. The offense has the pieces to keep up just about any sort of a pace.

The line gets everyone back from the end of the season – Mekhi Becton didn’t play in the bowl game – to block for QB Micale Cunningham and a loaded group of skill parts.

Of course Clemson has the talent to reload in any spot in a big hurry, but it’ll only have one game to get the offensive line in place after losing four starters. The pass rush wasn’t there for Louisville last season, but the back eight is going to be a major plus right away, at least in terms of experience.

[lawrence-related id=511890]

Why Clemson Will Win

The Louisville defense wasn’t anything special last season, and now it has to do some work on a defensive front that wasn’t exactly bursting with size before.

Yeah, the Clemson offensive line might need a wee bit to get everything in sync, but the situation is hardly a major concern. It should be able to handle itself just fine against the Cardinal front seven.

The other side of the line is the bigger deal.

Everyone might be back on the Cardinal O line – at least from the bowl game – but it still coming off a season when it was dead last in the nation in allowing tackles for loss. Turn the Clemson defensive front loose from the start, and let it wreck the gameplan.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s sort of crazy that these two programs have only faced six times.

Remember, Louisville used to be in the Big East and American Athletic Conference before joining the ACC in 2014. It’s not like the two schools are that close – they’re over 400 miles apart – in what’s been an interesting new battle.

The Cardinals and Lamar Jackson had the Tigers in big, big trouble in a wild 2016 shootout, and each of the first three battles between the two schools were decided by six points or fewer. And then …

Clemson won 47-21 in 2017, followed it up by a 77-16 nail-biter that actually could’ve been even worse, and then stomped away for a 45-10 last year.

Louisville has never beaten Clemson, and it’s not going to happen this year, either.

Both teams will have an ACC game under its belt – Clemson starts out at Georgia Tech and Louisville begins with NC State – so it’s not like they’ll come in stone cold.

The Cardinal offense will be stronger and sharper than it’s been over the last few years in the series, but at home, the Clemson machine will take over in the first half and will keep up scoring early in the second.

However, just how much will the Tigers keep pushing so early in the season? They’ll win easily, but covering will be a question in the final few minutes.

Georgia vs Virginia Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Virginia Will Win

The pressure is all going to be on the other side.

Georgia is going to be a preseason top five team – if not top three – the game is in Atlanta, and anything less than a great opening performance will start up the warning sirens.

Virginia might have lost QB Bryce Perkins and some other stars to the show that ended up in the Orange Bowl, but nine of the top ten tacklers are back. The offense might need a little while to get going against the Georgia D, but the other side should control the game early on.

The Cavs didn’t face Wake Forest last season and didn’t play new most-likely Bulldog QB Jamie Newman, but they’re going bring the pressure into the backfield from the start against a Georgia line that loses three NFL first round starting talent.

[lawrence-related id=506446]

Why Georgia Will Win

The Georgia defense returns loaded, too.

11 of the top 14 tacklers are expected to be back, and even with the defensive front going through a wee bit of an overhaul the defense that finished No. 1 in the nation against the run should come out every bit as nasty.

It probably won’t take a whole lot of points to get this done. Virginia’s offense will be just fine in time – everyone is back up front and the skill spots will be just fine – but the ground game that finished 12th in the ACC last season isn’t going to be a whole lot better against this D.

[lawrence-related id=506763]

What’s Going To Happen

These two last played in the Oahu Classic Bowl in 2000 – Georgia won 37-14. Georgia also won the first time these two started the season against each other with a 30-22 victory to kickoff 1987.

From 1913 to 1915, Virginia owned the series with three straight wins. From 1916 on, it’s Georgia going 9-3-3 …

This time, it’s personal.

It’s also going to be when Georgia makes a wee bit of an early statement. The offense will be good enough to get by, but it’ll be the suffocating performance by a jacked up defense that will be the difference.

Ole Miss vs Baylor Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Baylor Will Win

There’s a whole lot of reworking going on with the Ole Miss offense.

It’s still going to run the ball, and it’s got the skill parts to come up with an explosive, more balanced O, but the downfield passing attack is going to need a few games to get any sort of a rhythm together.

You can’t go from having an offense that was 102nd in the nation and painfully inefficient at times to cranked up right away without more time than this offense is going get.

There will be a Rebel pass rush, and there’s talent in the secondary, but the SEC’s worst pass defense will need a little time, too.

Baylor QB Charlie Brewer is back along with three of his top five receivers, but …

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Pretty much anyone who did anything big for the Baylor defense last year is gone.

Leading tackler Terrel Bernard is back, but eight of the top 11 tacklers are done, almost all of the defensive front needs to be replaced, and a new coaching staff and a new style will have to get the offense up to speed.

For all of the good things Baylor did last year under head coach Matt Rhule, the pass protection wasn’t great – it was the second-worst in the Big 12. Ole Miss might have its defensive concerns coming into the season, but getting to the quarterback likely won’t be one of them.

[lawrence-related id=512059]

What’s Going To Happen

Which team with the new coaching staff can get things together the fastest?

Baylor has more personnel concerns, Ole Miss has more stylistic issues, and in the season opener, the side with the pieces already in place will find a way to grind through a relatively sloppy game with a ground attack that will take over in the second half.

Florida State vs West Virginia Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Florida State Will Win

Will West Virginia have an offense yet?

It should be better, and the team should be stronger than it was in Neal Brown’s first season, but it has to be ready to rock and roll right out of the gate after finishing last season dead last in the Big 12 in total O.

The Florida State offense isn’t going to all of a sudden by 2019 LSU despite the coaching change to Mike Norvell and his staff, but the defense returns ten of the top 11 tacklers and a few legitimate first round talents to work around.

There was no Mountaineer running game whatsoever last season, and the downfield passing game was non-existent far too often. It might not take too much for FSU to take control and put this away early.

Get up, rely on the defense, and make the West Virginia O that needs a tune-up to press. However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Take almost everything above and flip it around.

Yes, the new coaching staff should help FSU, but the offensive line issues of the past few years aren’t going to magically be fixed. There are plenty of weapons to play around with, but they won’t be used if the WVU pass rush can kick in right away.

This is an experienced and promising Mountaineer D that turned into one of the best in the Big 12 at getting into the backfield. It was second in the Big 12 in sacks and averaged 6.6 tackles for loss per game, and now it’s going against on O line that – yeah, yeah, new year and new team – was 125th in tackles for loss allowed and gave up 3.7 sacks per game.

What’s Going To Happen

Which disappointing program will take a big step in turning things around?

West Virginia will be a whole lot better, but in a decent defensive battle that will come down to key stops, FSU will come up with a few more.

The Noles will get two big plays out of its offense to make up a rough day from the ground attack. Overall, it won’t be anything pretty, but it’ll be an entertaining fourth quarter.
