LSU men’s basketball assistant Cody Toppert leaving to become G League head coach, per report

Cody Toppert joined the Tigers staff last season after spending three years on the staff at Memphis.

LSU men’s basketball assistant coach [autotag]Cody Toppert[/autotag] is leaving after one season to become the head coach of the Capital City Go-Go, the G League affiliate of the NBA’s Washington Wizards.

The news was reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Toppert spent the 2022-23 season with the Tigers after coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] hired him away from Memphis, where he spent three seasons as an assistant. Prior to that, Toppert spent one year as an assistant for the Phoenix Suns.

This will be Toppert’s second stint as a G League head coach after he spent the 2017-18 season leading the Phoenix affiliate Northern Arizona Suns.

Now, LSU has an open position on its staff to fill following a turnover-heavy offseason as the team looks to bounce back from a disappointing first season under McMahon.

LSU basketball coach Matt McMahon adds final assistant to complete staff

The Tigers added the final piece to their new coaching staff in Ole Miss assistant Ronnie Hamilton.

The Tigers have now completed their on-court basketball staff under new coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag]. The former Murray State coach already added Memphis assistant [autotag]Cody Toppert[/autotag] and former Racers assistant [autotag]Casey Long[/autotag].

On Friday, [autotag]Ronnie Hamilton[/autotag] agreed to join McMahon’s staff, providing the final piece of the puzzle. Hamilton has experience as an SEC assistant, coming from Ole Miss, where he spent the last four years and primarily worked with guards.

Hamilton followed coach Kermit Davis from Middle Tennessee State, where the pair worked together for an additional four years. Before that, he worked as an assistant at Houston, Tulane, The Citadel and Division II Tarleton State.

Hamilton has an undergraduate degree from Duke, where he was a four-year letterman for the Blue Devils in football rather than basketball, playing defensive back.

This new staff certainly has its hands full. Every player from last year’s team has now either entered the 2022 NBA draft or the transfer portal. McMahon and Co. have already added three players through the portal themselves, and they will need to add quite a bit more between now and the beginning of the season.

But with a full staff in place, the Tigers can hit the trail at maximum strength, which should help in convincing transfers to head to Baton Rouge despite potential impending sanctions.

Report: Memphis assistant Cody Toppert to join LSU’s staff

Toppert has spent the last three seasons as an assistant under Penny Hardaway.

New LSU men’s basketball coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] is close to making the first addition to his staff.

According to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, the Tigers are close to finalizing a deal to bring Memphis Tigers assistant [autotag]Cody Toppert[/autotag] to Baton Rouge. The 39-year-old has coached under Penny Hardaway at Memphis since 2019.

Toppert has experience coaching at the NBA level. After graduating from Cornell in 2005, he had a playing career that lasted until 2012 — mostly overseas but also in the NBA minor leagues. Following his playing career, he served a stint as an assistant at Scottsdale Christian Academy in Phoenix before jumping to the NBA G League.

He was an assistant coach for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers from 2015-17 before serving as the head coach for the Northern Arizona Suns for one season. Toppert received a call-up after that and spent the following season as an assistant with the Phoenix Suns before heading to Memphis.

McMahon is a forward-thinking coach, and in Toppert, he lands a forward-thinking assistant. In his previous stop at Memphis, he created and oversaw one of college basketball’s top analytics programs.

The context of this move is also worth noting. On Saturday morning, it was reported that Memphis — and Hardaway, specifically — is facing multiple Level I and II charges from the NCAA. However, Toppert now joins another program with potential sanctions down the road, which resulted in the termination of previous coach [autotag]Will Wade[/autotag].
