Yankees woes continue with disastrously painful first inning against Cleveland

What a miserable start for New York.

In case you haven’t heard, the New York Yankees are a disaster of a baseball team right now. Coming into Thursday, the Yankees were 6-11 on the year with six losses in their last seven games. Just one week ago, fans were so upset with the team that a game was halted after baseballs were thrown onto the field in disgust.

If the Yankees thought about possibly turning a corner on Thursday, they got off to a miserable start against the Cleveland Indians. In the first inning alone, New York made numerous thoughtless mistakes that gave Cleveland a 3-0 inning off the hop.

Those highlights — or lowlights, if you’d prefer — include:

  • Brett Gardner missing a routine catch in left field.
  • A ball sneaking through Mike Ford at first for an infield hit.
  • Pitcher Domingo German fumbling a softly hit ball to allow a Cleveland run to score.

The German mishap was especially egregious, as everyone remained safe — and Cleveland doubled their score! — on a play that very well should have ended the inning.

The damage at the end of the first for the Yankees was a 3-0 deficit and a cacophony of errors that were excruciatingly painful to watch. Not only that, New York has not been able to overcome a three-run deficit to win a ball game this season.

Things just keep on going from bad to worse in New York, it seems.

Cleveland reliever Emmanuel Clase throws an absurd 100 mph cutter

WHOA!

It’s time for you all to get to know the name Emmanuel Clase, in case you’re not a Cleveland fan.

The reliever who was part of the Texas Rangers’ Cory Kluber trade in 2019 hasn’t allowed an earned run in his six appearances and already has three saves under his belt in 2021. And that’s partially because of the gas he’s throwing.

We’ve seen some other absurd pitches this season — a 100 MPH sinker from the Cardinals’ Jordan Hicks, Zack Greinke’s 51 MPH eephus, and now we have to show you Clase’s 100 MPH cutter that looks positively unhittable.

That’s right, a triple-digit CUTTER. What do you do with this?

He also throws a speedy fastball:

Wow!

‘Fair-weather’ Indians fan gets roast of their life from radio call-in show host

“That proves what an ignoramus you are. Get off our show!”

Cleveland Indians radio show host Bruce Drennan does not have time for fair-weather fans. After the Indians’ 3-2 Opening Day loss to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday — in the snow, no less — some fans were not pleased with the team’s first game of the season, despite there being another 161 games to go.

Enter Drennan and his radio show “Drennan Live,” a live call-in talk show on Bally Sports Great Lakes. As Drennan took postgame calls, this Cleveland fan entered the picture to give their piece of mind on the Indians and the effort of some of the team’s players.

In typical radio host fashion, Drennan did not hold back on the caller with this roast of a lifetime.

Here is a copy of the important parts of the exchange:

Caller: The next guy… the good pitches down the middle, he won’t swing at, but the balls down around his ankles, he hits to shortstop into a double play! This has been going on for two years.

Drennan: I guess you missed a lot of the games that [Franmil] Reyes hit in the clutch last year, huh?

Caller: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Drennan: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You’re an idiot. You’re an idiot and you don’t know baseball. Oh, you are an idiot. Listen, you’re gonna tell me you are judging… you don’t know anything. You don’t know squat, you stupid idiot. You’re gonna tell me you’re gonna make a judgment on the season after one game, in 30 degree weather? That proves what an ignoramus you are. Get off our show! Fair-weather idiot.

Now that is how you dismantle a fan’s overreaction to game one out of 162.

Ranking 8 MLB fan suggestions for a new Cleveland Indians name

What should it be?

Back in July, Cleveland’s Major League Baseball franchise announced it was reviewing its nickname — the Indians — in the wake of the now-Washington Football Team doing the same.

On Sunday, we learned from a New York Times report that the franchise will indeed drop its name, and although we may not know what the replacement for it will be for, perhaps, months or years, MLB fans from around the country and in Ohio came up with some ideas.

We listed a bunch of suggestions in July, but let’s take it a step further and rank them by how good they sound.

MLB fans have already settled on new name for the Cleveland Indians after report of name change

BASEBALL TEAM!

After decades of protests from fans, Native American and civil rights groups, Washington’s NFL team finally changed its name this season to the Washington Football Team.

And according to a report from The New York Times, Cleveland is going to be the next MLB franchise to move on from a Native American mascot.

On Sunday, The Times reported that MLB’s Cleveland Indians had decided to change their name for the first time in 105 years. The Cleveland baseball franchise had faced plenty of scrutiny in recent years over both its name and racist “Chief Wahoo” logo. The team phased out the logo in 2019, and evidently the name is next. The team did not comment to The Times.

But given the growing popularity of the Washington Football Team’s delightfully generic name, you probably could have guessed what MLB fans suggested for Cleveland in light of the news:

CLEVELAND BASEBALL TEAM.

Do it, Cleveland. Baseball needs the Baseball Team.

Browns unite with Cavaliers, Indians to be positive agents of change

The three Cleveland sports teams come together as one to make Northeast Ohio a better place

The three major professional sports teams in Cleveland have united as one in an effort to combat social injustice and promote positive change in Northeast Ohio and beyond. The Browns joined with the Cavaliers from the NBA and the Indians of MLB in a partnership they hope will help improve relations between police and the community, increase voter registration and improve educational opportunities.

From the press statement, which was released via all three teams,

Head Coaches and front office executives representing the city’s three major professional sports teams – the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians – announced today a sports alliance to develop a sustainable and direct strategy to address social injustice facing the city of Cleveland and all Northeast Ohio communities. The alliance will also focus on improving the relationship between law enforcement and its citizens, encouraging nonpartisan voting activities and increasing the opportunities for quality education for everyone.

Browns GM Andrew Berry offered this quote on his team’s behalf,

“We understand the platform our organization has to make a positive impact on these important issues. When Coach Stefanski and I began discussing how we might be able to elevate and broaden that impact by expanding the dialogue to our counterparts in Cleveland, it quickly became apparent that partnering with the other teams in our city would help our region come together so we can collectively address the problems that we’ve all been working to help solve independently.”

It’s the latest in a growing trend of professional sports teams choosing to try and be more impactful in the greater community than just an avenue for entertainment.
