Baker Mayfield calls Myles Garrett’s helmet attack ‘inexcusable’ in somber interview

“He’s going to going get suspended. We don’t know how long and that hurts our team.”

Baker Mayfield was blunt and somber as he addressed Myles Garrett’s mindless violence in the final moments of the Cleveland Browns’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.

Garrett ripped the helmet off quarterback Mason Rudolph’s head, and began hitting him with it. Rudolph said he was fine after the game. But Garrett’s actions immediately spurred violence all over the field. Steelers offensive linemen David DeCastro and Maurice Pouncey responded by punching and kicking Garrett in the head. It was the most violent and disgusting display in recent memory in the NFL.

“That’s inexcusable,” Mayfield said in an interview on the field on the FOX Sports broadcast immediately after the game. “I don’t care — rivalry or not — you can’t do that. That’s kind of our history here: hurting yourself. That’s just endangering the other team. That’s inexcusable. He knows that — I hope he does now. It’s just tough.”

Mayfield added: “I don’t think there’s anything in that moment that I can say to calm him down. The reality is, he’s going to going get suspended. We don’t know how long, and that hurts our team. We can’t do that. We can’t continue to hurt our team.”

Here’s a look at the full incident, including what seems to be the interaction that started it. It looks like Garrett’s hit on Rudolph lead to some wrestling on the ground, during which Rudolph attempted to take off Garrett’s helmet. That’s when Garrett borough their fight to a totally different scale.

Rudolph spoke out against Garrett after the game and said it was “pretty cowardly” and “pretty bush league.”

No doubt, Garrett will face a suspension. His actions are likely to bring a severe response from the NFL, which is trying and apparently failing to fix their image issues.

Myles Garrett needs to be suspended for the rest of season for brutal attack on Mason Rudolph

Myles Garrett’s season should be over.

Thursday night’s Steelers-Browns game was winding down in the final seconds when all of the sudden all heck broke loose and one of the ugliest attacks we’ve seen in an NFL game happened as Cleveland’s Myles Garrett ripped off Mason Rudolph’s helmet and then slammed it into the QB’s head in one very violent action.

And that, right there, should be the last play of the season for the former No. 1 pick, as the NFL needs to immediately step in and lay a heavy suspension on Garrett for such a dangerous and hideous thing to do in an NFL game.

Garrett was tossed from the game and everyone watching was wondering what we just saw.

Check this out:

That could have done some serious harm to Rudolph, who is lucky he didn’t suffer a head injury in the fracas.

Baker Mayfield called Garrett’s actions inexcusable during the his postgame interview with Erin Andrews and said Garrett will likely be suspended because of it, which was a very honest and somber moment by the leader of the Browns.

Player safety has been a big issue for the NFL and nothing goes against that more than having a defensive lineman attacking a QB with his own helmet.

You gotta think the NFL won’t hesitate to do the right – and only – thing and suspend Garrett for the rest of the season, if not more.

Because this was a very bad moment for the league, a moment that played out on a national television and could have ended with a very serious injury.

Thankfully it didn’t but many people on Twitter agree – suspend him for the rest of the season.

Myles Garrett starts a brawl after hitting Mason Rudolph with his own helmet

One of the most unacceptable incidents in the NFL in recent memory.

The NFL has hit a new low.

Myles Garrett created a violent rampage in the final moments of the fourth quarter in the Cleveland Browns’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. After one of the final plays, Garrett ripped the helmet off quarterback Mason Rudolph and used the helmet as a weapon to strike Rudolph in the head. In response, Steelers offensive linemen began punching and kicking Garrett in the head while scrums began to break out over the field.

It was one of the most violent and disgustingly displays in the NFL — and in professional sports — in recent memory. Garrett will doubtlessly receive a large suspension for his actions — and it’s clearly deserved. His rage was completely out of control.

The Browns had another piece of dirty play on Thursday, with safety Damarious Randall delivering a dirty helmet-to-helmet hit on receiver Diontae Johnson, who was left bleeding from his ear.

The reaction on Twitter was decisive and tumultuous. No one could believe what they were seeing. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes even weighed in on the insanity.

Browns safety ejected for dirty hit on Diontae Johnson, and NFL fans were disgusted

A terrible piece of play.

Cleveland Browns safety Damarious Randall was ejected for a hit on Diontae Johnson that left the Pittsburgh Steelers receiver with blood coming out of his ear during Thursday Night Football in Week 11.

In the second half, Johnson couldn’t haul in a target from quarterback Mason Rudolph. After the ball fell through the receiver’s hands, Randall came flying in with his head forward for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Johnson. He was down on the field for a long time, but eventually walked slowly off the field with significant help from trainers.

Simply: there is no place for that kind of hit in the NFL. It’s exactly the kind of hit that the NFL has attempted to ban. The ejection was absolutely justified for what was clearly and illegal hit and probably a piece of dirty play.

Here’s a scary look at his ear after the hit.

CAUTION: the video shows blood.

Johnson’s injury followed concussions to receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and linebacker Ola Adeniyi, among other injuries to Pittsburgh players.

NFL fans and media members were particularly outspoken in their reaction to the hit on Johnson. They were clearly disgusted.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-4) and Cleveland Browns (3-6) meet Thursday night for a primetime AFC North showdown. It’s a rivalry that dates back to 1950 with the Steelers leading the all-time series 75-58-1. That one tie came last year, 21-21, in their first meeting of the season, but Pittsburgh won the next round, 33-18, at home. Both teams are in the middle of the standings and can inch closer to the Ravens with a victory.

A 1-4 start and Ben Roethlisberger, the face of the franchise, out with a season-ending injury wasn’t exactly what Steeler Nation had envisioned to begin the season. However, Pittsburgh has turned things around and has won its last four games, including a 17-12 victory over the Rams. Mason Rudolph threw for 242 yards and one touchdown. James Washington led the team with six catches for 90 yards and one touchdown. The Steelers are averaging just over 21 points per game but rank near the bottom in total yards, passing yards and rushing yards per game. That didn’t stop coach Mike Tomlin, who made a gutsy 4th and 1 call with the team leading 14-12. That confidence may be the spark they needed for a shot at the playoffs.

Defensively, Rams quarterback Jared Goff was limited to just 243 yards and two interceptions. The Steelers’ defense sacked Goff four times in the game and forced three turnovers. Mark Barron racked up 10 tackles, while Joe Haden added seven tackles and an interception. Javon Hargrave and T.J. Watt were in Goff’s face throughout the game. Hargrave finished with seven tackles and one sack with Watt adding five tackles and two sacks to the stat sheet. They will face a versatile Browns offense that has playmakers in running back Nick Chubb and wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

The Buffalo Bills had a chance to tie the game against the Browns on Sunday, but instead, the field goal attempt missed with 22 seconds left, and Cleveland had a renewed sense of hope for its season. The Browns snapped a four-game losing streak with the 19-16 road win. Baker Mayfield completed 26 of 38 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Chubb rushed for 116 yards, his fourth 100+ yard game this season, which brought his season total to 919 yards– third-best in the NFL. With Kareem Hunt back as well, the Browns have a 1-2 punch at running back. Jarvis Landry led the team with nine catches for 97 yards, while Odell Beckham Jr. added five more for 57 yards.

Cleveland’s defense held Josh Allen to 266 yards passing and no touchdowns. The Browns rank seventh in the NFL against the pass. Myles Garrett has racked up ten sacks and will look to attack a weak offensive line for the Steelers, much the same away Aaron Donald and the Rams did a week ago.

Eagles could have interest in WR Antonio Callaway after release from Browns

The Philadelphia Eagles could have interest in wide receiver Antonio Callaway after his release from the Browns

The Philadelphia Eagles have a need for speed on the outside, and the Cleveland Browns just got rid of a wide receiver with plenty of it. On Thursday, the Browns released wide receiver Antonio Callaway.

A perceived problem child, Callaway served a four-game suspension to start the season after a violation of the league’s policy and program for substances of abuse.

The former Florida Gators star is talented, which is why Browns general manager John Dorsey took a risk on him in the fourth round of the 2018 draft, despite Callaway’s past off-field transgressions.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com, Callaway had run of chances in Cleveland.

They say culture makes a locker room, and his struggles in Cleveland could easily be reversed in a locker room that offers quality leadership and accountability, while also being one of the gold standard organizations in the NFL.

Callaway will have to go through the waiver process, but he could definitely be an option for Howie Roseman and the Eagles.

Callaway has eight catches for 89 yards in four games (two starts) in 2019.

Update:

The Eagles and other teams around the league are likely to pass on Callaway after Ian Rapoport just reported that the former Browns wideout is facing a 10-game suspension.

The ultimate game day guide: Steelers at Browns preview

Here’s our comprehensive preview for Steelers vs Browns.

Welcome to the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers gameday preview on the internet. This is where you come to find everything you need to know about the Steelers and their upcoming opponent! Mike Drakulich (@PghSportsNet) of Steelers Wire brings you inside the huddle for both teams, providing all fans with a game preview, Steelers keys to success, score prediction, fantasy football focus, game information, a detailed breakdown of each team, individual stats, team stats, and team injury reports. Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff. The only thing you’re missing is a game uniform.

Self-inflicted wounds killing this city’s offensive football units

Pittsburgh’s two football teams share the same headquarters and practice facilities. Both teams have storied histories and Hall of Fame players. Both teams feature defenses that are playing at a championship level.

Both teams also have offenses that are it’s own worst enemies.

In this preview, we are referring to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have battled back from a 1-4 start to win four straight and vault themselves into a playoff spot at 5-4.

They’re currently in the #2 wildcard spot in the AFC.

Penalties, dropped passes, untimely fumbles, and sometimes mind-numbingly stupid play calling have contributed to a Steelers offense that has the capabilities to do so much more with the talent they possess.

Everyone understands that Mason Rudolph isn’t Ben Roethlisberger. We’re talking about a future Hall of Famer… still, Rudolph has plenty of pedigree coming from Oklahoma State. The offense has a Pro Bowl running back in James Conners. Behind Conner is the versatile Jaylen Samuels. The offensive line is one of the best in the NFL. The receiving corps is young but very talented with the trio of Juju Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson, and James Washington. Vance McDonald is a tremendous tight end when healthy.

So what is the problem? Not enough practice? Lack of focus?

Perhaps fewer passing attempts are the root of the problem, according to one theory by Steelers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner.

“Everyone wants to make a play, and they want to have opportunities,” Fichtner said. “And maybe when there might be fewer opportunities in the passing game … maybe they overdo it sometimes and want to make more out of than what it really is.”

Dropped passes have plagued the team all season, and the squad added five more to the list last week vs the LA Rams. For the year, the Steelers have 17 total.

“With the lesser amount of opportunities, that’s definitely a real thing for receivers,” McDonald said, “because the last thing you want to know and carry with you, is, ‘I didn’t perform well.’ That’s going to hit everyone to some degree.”

When the receivers do manage to catch a pass and make a big play, they’ve fumbled an astounding six times.

One was in the Ravens game when Smith-Schuster had the ball punched out of his arm, a turnover that likely cost the team a big victory over the Ravens.

“I think what happens is if you’re not touching the ball a lot,” Fichtner said of skill players, “especially, skilled players, when they get the ball, they want to go make something happen and want to be a playmaker like they are.

“But every time isn’t the time to, so (in trying too hard) we put the ball on the ground. We have left some balls out there, just in catching. And I think those are the small things this week that we just have to keep talking about that are so important.”

Rudolph does his best to keep everyone positive, even though his player’s actions are having an effect on his stats.

“We have a lot of great receivers, a lot of great playmakers,” Rudolph said, “but hey, everyone’s human. Sometimes we don’t catch the ball. Sometimes I miss a pass. That happens, and we move forward.”

Regardless of shining sunshine up their player’s butts, it’s time for the skill players to take some accountability and start making plays instead of hindering it.

NFL Week 11: How to survive and advance in your knockout pool

The Niners and Raiders are double-digit favorites in the same week for the first time since 1987. Does that make them safe picks?

The Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons combined to send many knockout pools to the finish line in Week 10. However, if you rolled the dice and went with the Bears against the Matthew Stafford-less Lions as a late audible, you were rewarded … barely. On to Week 11 as the drama builds and tension heightens.

Don’t think about it

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles get together for the first time since Super Bowl LII. This figures to be a great game to watch and if you somehow have either team available, keep them in the bank. The Rams and Bears get together again. Last year saw Chicago on top. Another game that is worth enjoying and not getting anywhere near. Would have to say the Steelers and Browns fall into this category. Pittsburgh is playing well and Cleveland is coming off a good win against Buffalo. It’s Thursday night and not worth ruining your weekend. The Texans and Ravens get together in what should be a showcase of two of the best QBs in the game, Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson. This could come down to who has the ball last and that is not the memory you want to take away from being eliminated from a knockout pool. Not going to try and figure out what Colts team shows up to face the Jaguars. If Brian Hoyer plays again, stay far away from Indy. And, in the Monday night matchup, San Diego plays host to Kansas City in Mexico City. This could provide plenty of offensive fireworks and is a great way to finish NFL Week 11 by enjoying it and not having to choose sides.

Panthers bring back Greg Dortch for practice squad, Browns sign Bryan Cox Jr.

The Panthers didn’t miss Greg Dortch for long.

The Panthers didn’t miss Greg Dortch for long. Just days after waiving the wide receiver/return specialist, the team has brought him back for the practice squad, signing him off the Jets’. To make room, they released wide receiver Quadree Henderson.

Dortch had a strong debut for Carolina against the Titans two weeks ago. He posted 52 yards on two kickoff returns and 11 yards on two punts.

In Green Bay, the Panthers replaced Dortch by going with D.J. Moore as their punt returner and DeAndrew White on kickoffs. Both did pretty well, so until that dynamic changes we probably won’t see Dortch called up to the 53-man roster.

In related news, the Browns picked up defensive end Bryan Cox Jr., who was also recently released by the Panthers.

Cleveland is arguably the most disappointing team in the AFC this season. They come into this week at just 3-6 despite high expectations.

Cox flashed several times for the Panthers, so he might be able to carve out a respectable backup role for himself with the Browns’ tough defensive line.
