Auburn RHP Christian Herberholz inks free agent deal with Baltimore Orioles

Herberholz is turning pro after striking out 90 batters over 90 2/3 innings as an Auburn Tiger.

Baltimore has become a hot destination for former Auburn baseball players.

Since 2020, the Orioles organization has either drafted or signed five former Tigers. [autotag]Chase Allsup[/autotag] joined that company earlier this week by being taken in the fourth round of the MLB draft by Baltimore, and his Auburn teammate [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] is set to join him.

Wednesday, Herberholz signed a free-agent deal with the Baltimore Orioles, joining infielder [autotag]Cooper Weiss[/autotag] by landing an undrafted deal with a Major League club.

Herberholz signed with Auburn after a successful stint in the junior college ranks at nearby Southern Union State Community College, where he struck out 55 batters in 56 1/3 innings as a Bison. At Auburn, he appeared in 33 games in two seasons, where he struck out 90 batters, walked 38, and boasted a 4.76 ERA in 90 2/3 total innings.

The MLB draft period results in five Tigers earning a free agent deal, or being drafted. Auburn RHP’s Chase Allsup (Baltimore Orioles) and [autotag]Will Cannon[/autotag] (Cincinnati Reds), as well as south paw [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag] (New York Yankees) were drafted while Herberholz and Weiss signed free agent deals.

Recap: Belyeu’s big day lifts Auburn to midweek win over Georgia Tech

The Auburn outfielder delivered the final blow by crushing a three-run homer in the 9th inning of Auburn’s 7-2 win over Georgia Tech on Tuesday.

Auburn baseball fell victim to another long ball by one of the NCAA’s top power hitters, Drew Burress, early in Tuesday’s game with Georgia Tech.

However, Burress’ 21st home run of the season would only be a minor storyline as the Tigers managed to slide out of the flats with a 7-2 win over the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday at Ross Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.

Following his 1st inning home run, Burress recorded his second, and ultimately final, run of the game on a single in the 3rd inning to score Vahn Lackey and extend Georgia Tech’s lead to 2-0. Auburn went on to score seven unanswered runs to secure the win.

Auburn’s scoring surge began in the 4th inning when [autotag]Cade Belyeu[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to score [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] to cut the deficit to 2-1. A pair of long balls in the 5th inning by [autotag]Eric Guevara[/autotag] and [autotag]Cooper Weiss[/autotag] and a fielding error allowed Auburn to jump ahead, 4-2.

Belyeu struck again in the 9th inning. His three-run blast off of Georgia Tech’s Mason Patel would be the final blow and would lift Auburn to the 7-2 victory.

Auburn’s ability to overcome early adversity played a role in the win, but it’s defensive performance can not go unnoticed. Tiger outfielders Chris Stanfield and Cade Belyeu robbed Georgia Tech of a pair of two-run home runs that could have ultimately changed the tone of the game. Stanfield took a two-run homer away from Mike Becchetti in the 1st inning, and would later throw out Drew Burress at home in the 3rd inning. Both plays, if successful, would have given the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead.

Not only did Belyeu score the final runs of the game, but he took away a two-run home run away from Georgia Tech’s Vahn Lackey in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the lead.

[autotag]Ben Schorr[/autotag] recorded the win on the mound for Auburn by providing two innings of relief and allowing one hit. [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] closed out the game by striking out two batters over the final two innings. In between Schorr and Herberholz’s outings, [autotag]Cameron Keshock[/autotag] struck out four batters while walking one batter and allowing a hit in two innings of work.

Auburn baseball will continue its SEC schedule this weekend by facing Missouri on the road. The opening game of the series begins Friday at 6 p.m. CT.

Recap: Auburn baseball drops doubleheader, gets swept in Starkville

Auburn’s baseball struggles continued in Starkville on Sunday, when the Tigers lost both ends of a doubleheader with Mississippi State.

Auburn baseball is entering crunch time as the end of the regular season draws near, trying to find answers to its struggles and make a run towards qualifying for the SEC Tournament in Hoover.

Unfortunately, those deficits were not able to be overcome, as the Tigers dropped both halves of a doubleheader with Mississippi State on Sunday, losing 3-1 and 4-3.

The first of the two contests was a pitcher’s duel until about the 4th inning. That is when the scoreless tie was broken and things got going.

Connor Hujsak led the inning off with a single into left field and advanced to second later in the inning with a Logan Kohler walk.

That set up Ethan Pulliam to single through the left side of the field, scoring Hujsak and putting the Bulldogs on the board.

After a strikeout recorded the second out, Armani Larry stepped up to the plate and also singled through the left side of the field, plating Kohler after an eventual error was made. Mississippi State had the 2-0 advantage.

Auburn attempted to answer back in the top of the 5th, as [autotag]Kaleb Freeman[/autotag] started the inning off with a solo home run over the right field wall, cutting the score to 2-1.

The final bit of scoring came in the bottom of the 6th with some two-out magic from the Bulldogs. After a David Mershon walk and a Dakota Jordan single, Hunter Hines singled through the right side to bring home the third Mississippi State run and eventually secure the win, 3-1.

The second of the two matches was filled with late drama, but early scoring.

With one runner on and two outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Kohler singled through the left side to score the first run of the game for the Bulldogs, putting them up 1-0.

Things started looking up for the Tigers in the top of the 4th. [autotag]Christian Hall[/autotag] began the frame with a single through the left side. [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] and [autotag]Cade Belyeu[/autotag] followed that up with back-to-back walks, loading the bases with no outs.

[autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] drew a walk right after this to score Auburn’s first run, which then set up [autotag]Carter Wright[/autotag] to hit into a fielder’s choice and put the Tigers in the lead at 2-1.

After a Freeman walk eventually loaded the bases up again later in the inning, [autotag]Eric Guevara[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice to second base, scoring Belyeu and making the score 3-1.

Nobody scored again until the 7th, which is when the Tigers’ pitching woes started to show up once again.

After two singles began Mississippi State’s final chance to tie the game back up, Kohler came in clutch once again, doubling to right center and clearing the bases. The Bulldogs had suddenly come back and tied the game up 3-3.

That sent the game into extra innings, and Auburn could not capitalize in the top of the 8th.

With runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Hujsak singled into left field, scoring in the game-winning run and securing the sweep for Mississippi State.

[autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag] picked up the loss in game one, dropping to 2-2 on the year. He pitched for 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one.

[autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] got the loss in the second game after his appearance in the 8th. He pitched 0.2 innings, giving up the one run on two hits while intentionally walking one.

Jurrangelo Cijntje picked up the first win for the Bulldogs with his 6.2 innings of work. He gave up one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking three.

Tyson Hardin got the win in game two, pitching two full innings. His phenomenal outing saw him give up no runs and no hits, while striking out five Tiger hitters.

Auburn now falls to 19-20 on the season and 2-16 in the SEC. Time is officially running out for [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag]’s team as they prepare to do battle with Florida A&M on Tuesday. First pitch for that game is set for 3 p.m. CST at Plainsman Park.

Recap: Auburn baseball takes down UAB in Birmingham

Although Auburn is just 1-8 in SEC play to start the baseball season, the Tigers continued rolling in the non-conference on Wednesday.

Although Auburn is just 1-8 in SEC play to start the baseball season, the Tigers continued rolling in the non-conference on Wednesday by taking down the UAB Blazers 10-4 at Regions Park in Birmingham.

Auburn starting pitcher [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] (1-1) got the ball for the third straight mid-week game but struggled through 2 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in the contest.

The Tigers bullpen faired much better, as [autotag]Parker Carlson[/autotag], [autotag]Alex Petrovic[/autotag], [autotag]Zach Crotchfelt[/autotag], and [autotag]Hayden Murphy[/autotag] combined for 6 1/3 innings of 1-hit ball. Petrovic, Crotchfelt, and Murphy allowed just one base runner over the game’s final 5 frames.

On the offensive side, Auburn exploded for 10+ runs for the second non-conference game in a row. Infielder [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] and senior captain [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] happened to be the stars of the night. After Cooper Weiss drove in the first Auburn run with a single in the top of the first, McMurray and Peirce combined to drive in 6 of the next 9 Tiger tallies. Both players homered, while McMurray contributed 3 total hits and 3 RBIs.

Peirce had the biggest blast of the game in the sixth inning when he roped a 2-run, go-ahead home run into the seats to give Auburn a 6-5 lead. The 2-run homer was the beginning of a 7-run 8th inning that was bookended by another Pierce RBI single.

Auburn’s mid-week victories have yet to translate into weekend play, but we’ll see if that trend changes when the Tigers welcome No. 4 ranked Tennessee to Plainsman Park on Friday.

Recap: Auburn baseball explodes for 20-run win against Austin Peay

Recap: Auburn baseball explodes for 20-run win against Austin Peay

After suffering a blowout loss in Saturday’s game two of a three-game home series, Auburn returned the favor to A-Sun opponent Austin Peay by handing the Generals a 24-5 7-inning mercy rule loss.

Unfortunately, the loss on the diamond wasn’t even the worst of the day for Austin Peay, as the school failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament on the hardwood by losing to Stetson in the A-Sun Championship.

As for the baseball game, Auburn scored multiple runs in every inning. An 8-run third highlighted the rout. Auburn scored 7-more in the fifth to put the game completely out of reach.

Infielders Deric Fabian, Cooper Weiss, and Cooper McMurray all contributed 4 RBIs in the lopsided victory, while Gavin Miller led the way with 5 runs batted in. Every Tiger that stayed in the game for at least two at-bats touched home plate.

On the pitching side, Auburn coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] opted to go with a bullpen game instead of starting [autotag]Joseph Gonzalez[/autotag] after his recent struggles. The move worked, as   [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag], [autotag]Cam Tilly[/autotag], [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Ben Schoor[/autotag], [autotag]Konner Copeland[/autotag], combined for 7 innings of 5 run ball.

Auburn may have struggled on Saturday, but it will be happy with another series win heading into a Tuesday road test against in-state rival Troy.

Auburn crushes Eastern Kentucky to earn series sweep

Auburn pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters in the Sunday finale.

Auburn baseball closes out opening weekend with another convincing win over Eastern Kentucky.

Auburn pitching limited the Colonels to just three hits in Sunday’s game, and struck out a combined 14 batters in the Tigers’ 9-1 win over Eastern Kentucky, thus completing the sweep.

UAB transfer [autotag]Carson Myers[/autotag] earned his first start as an Auburn Tiger on Sunday and delivered the best weekend performance on the mound. He struck out eight batters over six complete innings of work, allowing just two hits and issuing one walk. Myers’ best inning was his last, as he struck out the side on 12 pitches in the 6th inning.

Myers’ hard work did not go by the wayside once he departed, as [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] produced similar numbers over the final three innings. He finished the day with six strikeouts while allowing one earned run on one hit with a walk.

As strong as Auburn’s pitching was on Sunday, so was the bottom of the lineup. The combination of [autotag]Cooper Weiss[/autotag], [autotag]Christian Hall[/autotag], and [autotag]Deric Fabian[/autotag] went 7-of-9 at the plate with six RBI and a home run.

Hall extended Auburn’s lead to 3-0 in the 2nd inning with his first home run as a Tiger. Weiss scored the next run by singling home Bobby Peirce in the 3rd inning, and Fabian was responsible for the ensuing three runs over the 3rd and 5th innings.

Ike Irish had another respectable outing at the plate by recording two RBI, which included an RBI triple in the 1st inning to give Auburn and early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday to face UAB at Plainsman Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

Auburn baseball earns 30th win with drubbing of Ole Miss

Auburn’s offensive dominance continued Saturday as the Tigers complete the sweep in Oxford.

After outscoring Ole Miss, 24-6 in Friday’s doubleheader sweep, Auburn continued its offensive dominance on Saturday en route to another impressive win.

The Tigers used a 20-hit effort at the plate and a solid defensive day to defeat Ole Miss, 13-5 on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep at Swayze Field in Oxford.

Auburn (30-19-1, 14-13 SEC) set the tone early by jumping out to a 12-run cushion before the Rebels (25-26, 6-21 SEC) had a chance to answer. [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] and [autotag]Nate LaRue[/autotag] each plated runs on RBI singles in the top of the 2nd, and [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] smashed a solo home run in the 3rd inning to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.

Auburn would go on to do their most damage in the 5th and 7th innings. The Tigers scored six runs in the 5th to go ahead, 9-0, with a [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] grand slam being the biggest blow of the inning.

Auburn added three more runs in the 7th inning to push their lead to 12-0. Irish got the inning with a solo blast, with [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] and [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] adding runs with two-out singles.

The Rebels finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7th by scratching four runs across. Bo Gatlin put Ole Miss on the board with a two-run double, and later scored on a two-run home run by John Kramer to cut the Tigers lead to 12-4.

Each team traded runs in the 9th inning to cap scoring. McMurray again would extend the Tigers’ lead with a sacrifice fly to score [autotag]Chris Stanfield[/autotag], and Ole Miss answered with a single by T.J. McCants to score Garrett Wood.

Every player in the Auburn lineup recorded a hit in the game, with five players recording three hits. McMurray led the team in RBI with five, while Foster and Irish each picked up two.

Starting pitcher [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings. [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] earned the win for the Tigers by relieving Herberholz for 2.0 innings, where he allowed two hits and struck out one batter. [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] led the pitching staff in strikeouts with two.

Auburn returns to Plainsman Park to play one more game at home this season on Tuesday. The Tigers and Jax State will do battle on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT.
