WATCH: Bears TE Marcedes Lewis scores TD vs. Cardinals

Marcedes Lewis caught a touchdown for the Chicago Bears. It’s a Christmas miracle.

39-year old Marcedes Lewis caught a touchdown for the Chicago Bears. It’s a Christmas miracle.

The Bears are pouring it on the Arizona Cardinals on Christmas Eve and scored their third touchdown of the day, a dart from Justin Fields to Lewis in the back of the end zone. Fields bought time in the pocket, allowing Lewis to peel off his defender for the easy score.

This is Lewis’ first touchdown of his 18th season in the league. The score was set up thanks to another big connection from Fields to tight end Cole Kmet, who has his first 100-yard receiving game of his career while dealing with a quad injury.

Near the end of the first half, the Bears lead the Cardinals 21-7.

Move over, Santa Claus. Justin Fields is the one delivering presents to Chicago Bears fans this Christmas Eve. The Bears quarterback got the scoring started against the Arizona Cardinals with a three-yard touchdown run to put the Bears up 7-0. Fields dropped back to pass, and when he didn’t find anyone open, he took it upon himself to get into the end zone.

The scoring drive was set up thanks to a big connection from Fields to tight end Cole Kmet. Fields scrambled and threw up a heave to Kmet, who came down with the 53-yard catch, the longest reception of his career. With DJ Moore banged up on the first drive, the Bears offense needed to adjust, and they were successful.

Near the end of the first quarter, the Bears lead Arizona 7-0.

5 takeaways from Bears’ 33-22 loss to the Cardinals

Here are our takeaways from the Bears’ brutal loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.

Fifteen years ago, the late Dennis Green announced to the world that “the Bears are who we thought they were” after they staged an impressive comeback on Monday Night Football during the 2006 season.

Flash forward to the 2021 season, and those same words can be spoken about this team. After being put away by the Cardinals 33-22 and sitting at 4-8, the Bears are once again who we thought they were, and that is simply a bad football team.

With Andy Dalton at the helm instead of Justin Fields, who is still recovering from his rib injury, the Bears were behind the eight ball almost immediately, thanks to turnovers and never were able to recover against one of the best teams in the league.

Fans in attendance were treated to poor football in poor weather conditions, a tradition unlike any other at Soldier Field. Here are my takeaways from Sunday’s debacle on the lakefront.

Bears PFF grades: Best and worst performers in Week 13 loss vs. Cardinals

Here’s a look at how PFF graded the Bears offense and defense in their loss to the Cardinals.

The Chicago Bears suffered a messy 33-22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, sending Chicago to its sixth loss in the last seven games and all but ending their playoff hopes, even if they’re still not mathematically eliminated yet.

Pro Football Focus handed out player grades for those who took a snap in the Bears’ loss, and we broke them down by offense and defense, analyzing the three highest- and lowest-graded players on each side.

There were a few surprises in terms of the highest- and lowest-graded players, both on offense and defense.

Bears report card: How we graded Chicago in their Week 13 loss

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during Sunday’s game and how we graded the Bears in their loss to the Cardinals.

The Chicago Bears suffered a brutal 33-22 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, where Chicago’s offense turned the ball over four times and their defense gave up 30 points for the fourth time this season.

While many expected the Bears to lose to the Cardinals, they managed to do it in excruciating fashion — more bad offense and bad defense — en route to their sixth loss in the last seven games after a 3-2 start.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Bears in this loss.

Bears’ trick play vs. Cardinals had a classic Matt Nagy name

Just as Bears HC Matt Nagy appears on his way out of Chicago, he pulled out a new trick play called “Atomic Bomb” against the Cardinals.

There was a time when there was hope and optimism surrounding Matt Nagy and his Chicago Bears. The year was 2018, and the Bears cruised to a 12-4 record and their first NFC North title in eight years.

That was the same year Nagy won Coach of the Year, which seems ridiculous given how things have transpired in the three years since. During that 2018 season, Nagy became famous for his trick plays — be it “Santa’s Sleigh,” “Oompa Loompa,” “Freezer Left” or “Willy Wonka.”

Just as Nagy appears on his way out of Chicago, he pulled out a new trick play called “Atomic Bomb” against the Cardinals. And while it looked like it was a potential disaster in the making, Chicago turned it into a massive gain.

In the third quarter on first-and-10 from the Chicago 40-yard line, running back David Montgomery took the direct snap in the wildcat formation and handed the ball off to receiver Jakeem Grant, who then pitched it to quarterback Andy Dalton.

Dalton looked like he was done for as Cardinals pass rusher Devon Kennard was bearing down on him. But Dalton evaded the sack and found Grant downfield for a 34-yard completion to set Chicago up on the Arizona 26-yard line.

That play led to a one-yard touchdown from Dalton to tight end Jimmy Graham to bring the Bears to within 10 points, 24-14. Unfortunately, that was the closest they’d get.

Bears RB David Montgomery vows to keep fighting as losses continue to mount

Even as the losses continue to mount for the Bears, David Montgomery isn’t giving up on his team.

The Chicago Bears offense has been an utter disappointment this season, and that didn’t change as they welcomed the No. 1 seeded Arizona Cardinals to town.

The Bears turned the ball over four times — all Andy Dalton interceptions — which gave the Cardinals the ball inside Chicago’s 30-yard line each time.

Running back David Montgomery was the lone bright spot on offense, which has been the norm this season, where he tallied 90 rushing yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. He added eight catches for 51 yards.

“I really don’t care about it,” Montgomery said. “I’ll be way more happy if I had 12 yards averaging 0.1 yards per carry [and] we got the win. I [couldn’t] care less about individual stats because the feeling that you get when you win is completely different than having good stats when you lose.

“I just want to win.”

Unfortunately, wins have been hard to come by for the Bears this season, who are 4-8 with five games left on the schedule. Still, Montgomery isn’t giving up just yet.

“Ain’t gonna be no moping around,” Montgomery said. “I’m gonna go into work, and I’m going to get on everybody’s (expletive), and they’re gonna get on mine, too, and we’re gonna go back to the drawing board and we’re going to figure it out.

“Regardless of if anybody else wants to give up on us, I ain’t giving up on us. So that’s what it’s gonna be.”

That’s exactly the kind of leadership the Bears need at a time like this, where wins have been difficult to come by and morale could easily be at a low.

With five games left on the schedule, Montgomery is determined to keep fighting. And the hope is his teammates will do the same.

Bear Necessities: The Morning After…the Bears’ Week 13 loss vs. Cardinals

Our Bears Wire staff is sharing their immediate reactions to Chicago’s loss to the Cardinals.

This is our online morning newsletter, Bear Necessities. Subscribe to get the latest Bears news delivered to your mailbox every day.

The Chicago Bears suffered a brutal 33-22 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, which was Chicago’s sixth loss in the last seven games. While the Bears are still technically “in the hunt” when it comes to the playoffs, this loss seemed to be the nail in the coffin.

Backup quarterback Andy Dalton threw four interceptions that led to 23 of Arizona’s points, and the Bears never stood a chance in this game. Things don’t get easier when the Bears travel to Green Bay to face the Packers, a game that — history tells us — could get ugly real quick.

There was plenty to digest from Sunday’s defeat. Our Bears Wire staff is sharing their immediate reactions to Chicago’s loss against Arizona:

Bears QB Andy Dalton on his brutal day: ‘I had 2 tackles today, unfortunately’

Bears QB Andy Dalton threw four interceptions in a loss to the Cardinals, where he made a tackle on two of those picks.

With rookie quarterback Justin Fields sidelined with cracked ribs, veteran Andy Dalton made his second straight start — fourth this season — as the Bears hosted the Cardinals.

And Dalton’s brutal outing against the top-seeded Cardinals was a reminder that Matt Nagy’s decision to make Dalton the outright starter over Fields in training camp was the wrong move.

Dalton was responsible for all four of Chicago’s turnovers — all interceptions — which led to 23 of Arizona’s points in their 33-22 victory over the Bears.

When you look at Dalton’s stats, he completed 26-of-41 passes for 229 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions for a 54.9 passer rating. Oh, and he had two tackles, which tied cornerback Jaylon Johnson, safety DeAndre Houston-Carson and cornerback Xavier Crawford’s totals on the day.

Dalton’s reaction to his performance made for quite the one-liner from the Bears backup.

“I had two tackles today, unfortunately,” Dalton said.

Given Dalton threw four interceptions on the afternoon, running back David Montgomery, tight end Cole Kmet and receiver Jakeem Grant also got in on the action with one tackle apiece.
