Charlotte Hornets player grades from Friday night’s win vs. Knicks

The Hornets pick up their second-straight win

After ending their five-game skid just three nights ago, the Charlotte Hornets began a new streak by picking up their second win in as many games. The Hornets returned home with a 104-96 win over the Knicks in one of their best defensive performances of the young season.

The night started with a Knicks blitz, as New York won the first quarter 34-18. Kemba Walker was sizzling from distance, and the hornets struggled mightily on the offensive end early.

The game began to turn near the end of the half, as the Hornets finished the first half on a 6-1 mini-run to cut the deficit to 55-46 at the break. Charlotte carried over their end of the half spurt to the second half, as the Hornets put together yet another dominant third quarter.

Charlotte outscored New York 34-21 in the period, led by Gordon Hayward scoring the first 5 points of the quarter and Terry Rozier catching fire in the middle of the period.

After the Knicks made a comeback effort of their own to take a 93-91 lead with just over five minutes left, Charlotte scored 7 unanswered points behind Miles Bridges and Kelly Oubre Jr. to put the game away.

Up next for the Hornets is a litmus test matchup as the Warriors come to town on Sunday evening.

Three takeaways from the Hornets 127-119 win over shorthanded Bucks

The Charlotte Hornets defeat the Milwaukee Bucks

With no Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday, or Khris Middleton, the Charlotte Hornets took advantage in Milwaukee for their second win in a row.

The Bucks weren’t the only team missing their stars, as Charlotte came away with a 127-119 win despite missing LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward who are both missing extended time due to injury.

Once again, it was unexpected offense from Charlotte’s supporting cast and balance that carried the Hornets. Five Hornets players scored at least 18 points, with Miles Bridges’ 26 points leading the charge. The Bucks simply lacked the offensive output to keep pace without their stars.

Here are three takeaways from a win that sent Charlotte to 27-24 on the year while dropping the Bucks to 32-30:

LaMelo Ball’s monster game came after ‘no warmup, no nothing’ due to a COVID-19 testing issue

LaMelo Ball didn’t even need a warmup before his career night.

Charlotte Hornets rookie LaMelo Ball set a franchise rookie record with 7 made threes on Monday night. His 24 points led Charlotte (12-13) to a 119-94 win over the Houston Rockets (11-12) at the Spectrum Center.

The most surprising part of the performance came after the game, when we received some context for the performance from Ball. When asked by Ashley ShahAhmadi of Fox Sports Southeast about the secret to his career night, the rookie admitted he wasn’t even allowed to warmup due to a COVID-19 testing issue.

All Ball did was walk onto the court with zero warmup at all and drop seven threes en route to a blowout win. This rookie is special.

Miles Bridges, Ball’s favorite alley-oop partner, also made a surprise appearance:

When you see the names Stephen Curry and Jason Kidd next to LaMelo Ball in a graphic, you know it was a unique night for the 19 year-old. All he had to do was step on the court and go to work. No warmup necessary.
