What’s the key matchup to watch for in Chargers vs. Jaguars?

Highlighting the key matchup when the Los Angeles Chargers face the Jacksonville Jaguars.

When the Chargers take on the Jaguars, the attention will be on whoever’s under center for Los Angeles, whether that be a recovering-from-injury Justin Herbert or veteran Chase Daniel.

However, another thing on the field that should draw eyes is the matchup between cornerback Bryce Callahan and wide receiver Christian Kirk.

Not named Khalil Mack, Callahan has been the Bolt’s best off-season addition up to this point in the season.

Callahan has allowed three catches for 21 yards and a 6.3 passer rating on 65 coverage snaps in two weeks. He has also amassed one interception to go along with that.

Now, Callahan is getting ready to face his toughest test yet in Kirk, who’s also proving to be his team’s most valuable acquisition.

Kirk, who signed a monstrous contract after playing with the Cardinals, has 12 receptions, the 10th-most, 195 receiving yards (4th), and two touchdowns.

While Kirk has played outside and in the slot throughout his career, most of his snaps with the Jaguars have come inside (82%).

Kirk is a good wideout because of his quickness to beat fast corners and ability to run away from coverage and make significant gains out of short receptions.

Kirk has 2.79 yards per route run (7th), 85 yards after the catch: 85 (7th), and five explosive receptions (t-4th).

Meanwhile, Callahan has only allowed 50+ yards once since Week 8 of 2020.

It all starts up front in the trenches, where getting pressure on quarterback Trevor Lawrence to give him little time to throw is imperative.

Still, Lawrence should have his opportunities to throw to his top target, and it’ll be crucial for Callahan to have tight coverage on him.

4 things to know about Chargers’ Week 7 opponent, Jaguars

Preview of the Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 7 opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Chargers are fresh off a bye and will return to the action this Sunday against the Jaguars.

Here are four things to know about Los Angeles’ Week 7 opponent:

Not as good as stats suggest

Quarterback Gardner Minshew was given the keys to prove that he’s capable of being the team’s long-term starter. But aside from the season opener where he caught the nation’s attention against the Titans, he has not played well. Minshew is sixth in the NFL with 1,682 passing yards and tied for eighth with 11 touchdowns. However, five of the eight touchdown passes he’s thrown since Week 1 have come with the Jaguars down double digits. He has turned the ball over eight times, five of which were interceptions. Minshew has struggled with throwing to receivers down the field and into tight coverage. For a Chargers defense that has given up over 300 yards passing in three of their five games played, this could be the turning point.

Poor against the pass

Quarterback Justin Herbert has been rock solid in his first four starts. Heading into this weekend, there’s a strong possibility that Herbert’s dominance continues, even with potential season-high numbers in hindsight. The Jaguars have given up 293.3 yards of offense in each of their last three games against the Bengals, Texans and Lions.

Struggling to stay upright

The Chargers’ pass rush started out hot, but they cooled down significantly the past couple of games. Sunday would be the perfect time to heat up again, as they’re set to go up against a Jaguars team that has given up the fourth-most sacks in the league, and ranks 30th in pass-blocking, per Pro Football Focus. Minshew does have the tendency to leave the pocket quite a bit, which doesn’t necessarily justify poor offensive line play. But nonetheless, Los Angeles has to take advantage of a soft spot.

Defense is beat up

The Chargers took a toll with injuries prior to the bye week, but the Jaguars have taken quite the beating, too, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Key defenders like linebacker Myles Jack, defensive linemen Josh Allen and Abry Jones and safety Jarrod Wilson are all questionable this week. Not having them available could lead to a field day for Herbert and company.

Chargers open as favorites over Jaguars in Week 7

The Los Angeles Chargers are seen as home favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fresh off their bye week, the Chargers are looking to get back to their winning ways.

Going into this weekend’s contest, Los Angeles is 7.5-point favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 of the 2020 regular season, per BetMGM.

The Bolts’ first five contests saw them struggle to close out games all while sustaining injuries to key players week in and week out. One of the very few highlights was rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who put the nation on notice with his performances.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars have lost their last five straight games, giving up at least 30 points in each of their six played. Jacksonville is led by quarterback Gardner Minshew and rookie running back James Robinson.

The two teams met up last season, where the Chargers took care of business, beating the Jaguars by 35 points.

Sunday’s matchup will begin at 1:25 p.m. PT and will be televised on CBS.

Prediction poll for matchup between Chargers-Jaguars in Week 14

Time to cast your vote on the winner of the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 14.

The Los Angeles Chargers face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday afternoon TIAA Bank Field.

Both teams are currently 4-8 and sitting at the bottom of their division with their chances of making the playoffs being nearly nonexistent.

The Chargers have dropped three straight games against divisional opponents and all eight of their losses have come by a touchdown or less.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars have lost four consecutive games. During that skid, they have averaged only 11.7 points per game and have been outscored 129-47.

With quarterback Gardner Minshew struggling with turnovers, we expect the Chargers defense to force a few turnovers and with the Jaguars run defense ranking among the league’s worst, running back Melvin Gordon will run wild.

We’ve got Los Angeles beating Jacksonville by the score of 21-17.

With that, who do you think will win Sunday’s contest?

4 key things to know about Chargers vs. Jaguars

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lays out four things to know about the Chargers opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Los Angeles Chargers (4-8) are set to travel to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-8) this Sunday, Dec. 9.

Here are four key things to know about the Week 14 bout.

Quarterback carousel

The Bolts will face rookie Gardner Minshew this weekend. Nick Foles, who signed a big contract last offseason, broke his clavicle in the season opener, which left the Jags no choice but to put the former Washington State product in while Foles was on the injured reserve.

After tossing 11 touchdowns and three interceptions, Jacksonville resorted back to Foles as the team’s starter once he became healthy. In the four games back with him under center, their offense became stagnant, with the majority of their points coming in garbage time.

Their offensive problems led them to making the decision to go back to Minshew as the starter to add the much-needed spark. Despite the solid numbers posted, the rookie has flaws. Minshew has lost a league-high seven fumbles due to him holding onto the football for a long period of time, scrambling and getting hit.

Former LSU stars carrying the offense

After struggling to run the football last season, this has become a strong suit of the offense. Running back Leonard Fournette has 989 rushing yards and three touchdowns, as well as 65 receptions for 444 yards.

Meanwhile, his former roommate at LSU has brought firepower to a thin receiving group. Wide receiver DJ Chark has posted 58 catches for 881 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

Can get after the quarterback

It wasn’t long ago when the Jaguars had one of the best defenses in the league, but that has taken a toll, especially after the loss of cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who is now playing for the Rams.

But Jacksonville still has its strengths on that side of the ball, and that is rushing the passer. The team currently has 38 sacks on the season, which is sixth-best in the NFL. The Jaguars’ first-round pick of the 2019 NFL draft, Josh Allen, has provided a huge boost to the unit. Allen has nine sacks, which is a franchise record.

Can’t stop the run

If the Chargers want to win this game on the offensive side, they need to run the ball with running back Melvin Gordon. The Jaguars only allowed 74 rushing yards last weekend to the Buccaneers, but prior to that matchup, they allowed 200 or more yards rushing in three consecutive outings.
