Greene on CFP rankings: ‘I know what we’re trying to do at the end of the day’

Taking one game at a time is the name of the game for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

With the College Football Playoff committee releasing the initial CFP rankings, a lot of speculation surrounded where Clemson would fall, given some teams may have a stronger strength of schedule at this point in the season.

Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) came in at No. 4 in the first CFP rankings, but at this point in the season, this is not something that the players say is on many of their minds.

Junior cornerback Malcolm Greene spoke to the media on Monday ahead of the release of the CFP rankings, but he didn’t express much concern or interest in where the Tigers stack up against some fierce opposition.

The Virginia native reiterated much of what we heard from Swinney this week. Both Swinney and Greene emphasized focusing on the final goal of what the Tigers are trying to do as a team, and that happens one game at a time.

“No, I really don’t too much pay attention to the media and social media, but my teammates sometimes do and they sometimes talk about it, but I’m not too much on my phone,” he said. “My schedule is really busy and I don’t have too much time really to fit in too much of anything, but I sometimes see stuff on the TV. Like if I’m in the living room in the house and I get home, I get in there and I see that we’re No. 5 or something and I’m like that’s cool, but I know what we’re trying to do at the end of the day.”

It may be that the 5-foot-10, 195-pound cornerback has tunnel vision on what he needs to do each week, but it could also be his desire to focus on controlling what the Tigers can control, and that’s their approach to each game.

Even with an 8-0 record, the Tigers still have some tough competition for the remainder of the season and that starts this Saturday when Clemson faces off against Notre Dame.

Fox Sports analyst blasts CFP committee over LSU’s top-10 ranking

Joel Klatt was not happy with the number of SEC teams in the top 10.

Joel Klatt is Fox Sports’ lead college football game analyst and color commentator alongside Gus Johnson on Saturdays. On Tuesday night, the college football playoff committee released their first rankings of the 2022 season with a top four consisting of Tennessee, Ohio State, Georgia, and Clemson.

The biggest surprise in the top 10, though, would have to be the LSU Tigers at No. 10. LSU is ranked as the No. 17 team in the country according to the coaches poll, yet somehow the playoff committee, has it at No. 10.

Klatt was not happy at all about that and the fact the SEC has so many teams in the top 10.

“The SEC coalition is strong. Really strong, and rightly so,” Klatt said on “Breaking The Huddle with Joel Klatt” Wednesday. “They’ve got a lot of great teams this year, and I’m not going to say that they’re not. Having said that, five teams in the top 11, I thought, was a bit of an overreach. I thought five teams in the top 15 was more accurate. But there’s LSU, over-ranked — to a great degree, by the way. The biggest outlier as it relates to the AP poll and what they rose into the CFP. They’re at No. 10. And guess what LSU does for the SEC and, more specifically, Tennessee. It presents a really good backstop for Tennessee because Tennessee’s got that great win in Baton Rouge against LSU.

“So now, with LSU at 10, you’ve got this coalition where even if they were to lose to Alabama this week, they’re not dropping past 20, right? Now, Tennessee — even if they lose to Georgia — they’re not falling below TCU. But that’s only there if you’ve got the backstop of LSU. If LSU would’ve been more properly ranked at 14, 15, 16 and let’s say they lose to Alabama, they would’ve fallen into the low 20s, maybe even out of the rankings depending on the style of the game. But no, no, no, no. That’s not allowed because we’ve got to backstop Tennessee because heaven forbid that they were to fall below TCU if they would’ve lost. The coalition, the firewall, the SEC firewall, it is strong, it is built and it is real.”

I get it, people are tired of seeing the SEC so highly ranked, but think about this, the SEC has won three national titles in a row. Georgia, Alabama, and LSU are the last three champions of college football, and ‘Bama and the Bulldogs played against each other for the championship twice.

Five out of the last seven national championships have been won by SEC schools. If you are tired of hearing about the SEC teams, then beat them.

McElroy gets Clemson’s ranking, but would pick this team ‘all day long’ over the Tigers

Greg McElroy understands why Clemson came in at No. 4 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings that were released Tuesday night, given the fact the Tigers have wins over three teams in the CFP Top 25 – Syracuse (No. 20), Wake Forest (No. 21) and NC State (No. 22).

However, when it comes to the resume Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) has built, McElroy would argue that the aforementioned three ACC teams shouldn’t be ranked where they are.

And when it comes to the eye test with the Tigers, the ESPN college football analyst doesn’t seem impressed.

“Just saying, have you watched Clemson? Like, just watch them,” McElroy said. “A couple good wins. I was a little bit surprised, frankly, with where some of these teams ranked. How on God’s green earth you can rank NC State in the top 25 is beyond me, but they’re in there. Even though last week’s game (against Virginia Tech) on Thursday night made me want to, literally, it made me want to turn off the television. You know how hard that is for me to do as like a college football diehard? Last Thursday’s game was painful to watch. So, you’ve got a win there. Got a win against Syracuse. Syracuse sits at No. 20. So, Clemson, they have a couple good wins in there. Also got a win against Wake Forest. So, you have a win against team 20, 21 and 22.

“Alright, should any of those three teams be ranked where they’re at? I would argue no, but they’re sitting there with three wins against teams that are currently ranked in the top 25. So, I can understand why they’re where they’re at.”

While McElroy said he doesn’t “have a terrible issue” with where Clemson is ranked, he left no doubt about who he thinks would win if the Tigers played the team ranked right behind them in the CFP rankings – No. 5 Michigan.

“If Clemson played Michigan, I would pick Michigan every day and twice on Saturday. All day long. All day long,” he said. “But look at the resume  — wins against 20, 21 and 22 – so, I understand why they sit where they sit.”

Paul Finebaum made an appearance on ESPN’s First Take, reacting to the release of the first College Football Playoff rankings that were unveiled Tuesday night.

The ESPN personality doesn’t agree with the CFP rankings for Clemson and Michigan, and believes the Wolverines (No. 5) should be ranked fourth instead of the Tigers.

“Michigan has not played a great non-conference schedule, but they’ve been very dominating and they’ve also beaten some good teams – not great teams, in Penn State, but good teams,” Finebaum said. “They beat Michigan State the other night – not a great team but still a conference foe and a rival. And Michigan is in big trouble if they lose to Ohio State because of their non-conference schedule. But I completely agree. They should be at 4.”

Finebaum added that he’s “not impressed with Clemson” and thinks the Tigers could very well lose at Notre Dame on Saturday night.

“I’m not impressed with Clemson. I’m not impressed at all with the ACC,” he said. “We made a big deal a couple weeks ago – man, Clemson wins at Wake Forest, and then you mentioned the Wake Forest letdown (against Louisville) a couple days ago. The only thing about Clemson, they have a chance to redeem themselves, or be eliminated Saturday night at Notre Dame. That’s a fascinating game, and Clemson very likely could lose because they just have not been very good this year.”

ESPN analyst says Tar Heels could pull the upset on Clemson if they win out

Following Clemson’s No. 4 ranking in the first installment of the College Football Playoff Committee’s rankings this fall, an ESPN analyst weighed in on the possibility of an ACC upset between the Tigers and the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Chris “The Bear” Fallica expressed his thoughts on the potential for a Tar Heel run during the latter part of the season and a possible upset versus Clemson if the pair meet in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 3 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

“They have the loss to Notre Dame, which is obviously going to be a problem,” Fallica said regarding North Carolina. “If they were to run the table with that offense with [Drake] Maye at quarterback, who I think his name is rarely named in the Heisman race, if you compare his numbers to Hendon Hooker, CJ Stroud, Bryce Young and all those guys, he’s right there.”

“Now defensively, they’re No. 115 in the country in defensive efficiency, so that unit has been a liability,” Fallica continued. “They played better in the second half against Pitt and they shut down Izzy [Israel Abanikanda] in that Pitt offense. If they were to win out, we could be in a situation like the year they wound up playing Clemson in that ACC title game with the onside kick (2015), they potentially could have been in the playoff that year. If they’re 12-1 and ACC Champs and they rip through the remainder of these games and beat Clemson, who obviously the committee thinks very highly of, sure why not. I think of all the teams ranked in the teens, they certainly have the biggest upside.”

While Clemson was ranked within the top five in the No. 4 slot, North Carolina was a ways back at No. 17. The Tigers lead the way as the highest-ranked ACC team in Tuesday’s initial rankings with North Carolina (17), Syracuse (20), Wake Forest (21) and NC State (22) also ranked within the CFP Committee’s top 25.

Herbstreit reacts to TCU’s ranking

When the first set of College Football Playoff rankings were announced Tuesday night on ESPN, TCU (8-0) came in at No. 7 behind one-loss Alabama at No. 6 and the five teams in college football besides the Horned Frogs that remain unbeaten (No. 1 Tennessee, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Clemson and No. 5 Michigan).

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit sounded surprised when asked for his reaction to the Big 12’s TCU being ranked seventh.

“I mean, it’s only the opening week of these rankings. You could say, who cares. But it says a lot, man,” he said.

“I mean, you guys went right down the list there and talked about the depth of that conference. And we talk on GameDay every week about whether it’s Oklahoma State or Kansas State or TCU, all these teams — they’re very, very competitive, and the committee at this point is not necessarily maybe that impressed. They haven’t blown everybody out the way maybe some of the other teams ahead of them have. But that was one of the teams, I think, we were excited to see. Would they be behind a one-loss Alabama? And for now they are.”

Overrated/Underrated: Initial reactions to first CFP rankings

Who was too high and too low in the first CFP rankings of the year?

On Tuesday the initial College Football Playoff top 25 rankings were released. The North Carolina Tar Heels check in at No. 17 with a 7-1 record. Despite their only loss coming at the hands of an unranked Notre Dame team, UNC still made the top 20.

As it should come as no surprise, the Clemson Tigers were the highest-ranked ACC team at No. 4 overall. Joining the Tigers and Tar Heels from the ACC are No. 20 Syracuse, No. 21 Wake Forest, and No. 22 North Carolina State.

With the first rankings being revealed, we break down initial reactions with the most overrated and underrated teams. Where does that put Mack Brown and UNC?

Davis: TCU resume ‘far superior’ to Clemson’s, but wait

During ESPN’s College Football Playoff: Top 25 show Tuesday night, there was plenty of discussion about Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) and TCU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12). The Tigers checked in at No. 4 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, three spots …

During ESPN’s College Football Playoff: Top 25 show Tuesday night, there was plenty of discussion about Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) and TCU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12).

The Tigers checked in at No. 4 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, three spots ahead of the Horned Frogs at No. 7.

“Clemson and TCU to me is very fascinating,” ESPN college football analyst David Pollack said, before the rankings were announced, “and setting the groundwork for the rest of the schedule if both of those teams continue to slug it out and go undefeated.”

ESPN host Rece Davis chimed in on the Clemson-TCU conversation, saying the Horned Frogs have a resume that is “far superior” to the Tigers.

“Some of it is how much do we worry about TCU’s tendency to fall behind versus their resume that is far superior to Clemson’s at this point,” he said.

After the rankings were unveiled, ESPN displayed a graphic comparing Clemson’s resume (fourth in strength of record, 72nd in strength of schedule, three ranked wins based on current CFP rankings) to TCU’s resume (third in strength of record, 63rd in strength of schedule and two ranked wins based on current CFP rankings).

Davis then changed his tune regarding the resumes that the Tigers and Horned Frogs have put together to this point.

“Clemson and TCU very similar in resume,” he said. “Clemson has three ranked wins, maybe none that jump off the page at you. TCU has had some big rallies and of course an explosive offense — the sixth-most efficient offense — yet the Horned Frogs are sitting back in the 7th hole while Clemson, somewhat surprisingly at least to some, got a top-four nod ahead of Michigan.”
