RB Trey Sermon UNDER 36.5 receiving yards (-110)

Sermon caught four passes for 61 yards in the CFP Semifinal against Clemson. That included a long of 34. Prior to that game, Sermon had 34 yards on eight catches for the season.

Ohio State used a check-down option way more in the Clemson game plan than it had in any other situation in recent memory. Three-quarters of the Buckeyes’ throws to backs are essentially the modern equivalent of outside runs.

Sermon OVER 99.5 rushing yards (-110)

The transfer from Oklahoma didn’t immediately gel as part of the Buckeyes offense but Sermon broke through with a program-record 331-yard game against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game Dec. 19. He rambled for 193 yards in the Sugar Bowl.

Sermon got 60 carries over those two games, he’s running behind a top-shelf offensive line, and OSU is going to want to engineer methodical 10-play drives more so than normal in an effort to keep Alabama’s circus offense off the field.

QB Justin Fields took a hard hit against Clemson, and may not be 100% — either to engineer all-passing drives or to be as active in the read-option run game.

Buckeyes OVER 34.5 points (+105)

This tag is pretty fair for an Ohio State offense that was rolling Jan. 1. In fact, the Buckeyes have rolled over this total in six of their seven games. Yes, this is Alabama, and there is some risk, but the +105 price is a nice reward.

The Ryan Day offense/QB coaching and the emergence of Sermon — together with an offensive line finding its best gear of late — make for some value.

TE Jeremy Ruckert (+1000)/TE Luke Farrell (+3500) to score 1st TD of the game

Ruckert has 12 catches on the season; Farrell has five. Both scored against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl (Ruckert caught two TD passes), and the tight end position is a key in this game on both sides of the ball.

The Buckeyes run a lot of plays out of two-tight-end sets and Fields is a quarterback who gets comfortable with certain receivers in spurts. Tag both Ruckert and Farrell as value plays in the first-touchdown prop.

Parlay: Buckeyes MONEY LINE and game total UNDER 60.5 (+1300)

Ohio State is +265 on the money line, and the game is tagged with a high 74.5 total. The payoff for a zag-zag parlay — going against the grain on both plays —  is 13-to-1.

It’s a play on some chaos perhaps — on a couple or three late-drive turnovers and a couple of red-zone defensive stops. It is after all the title game for the 2020 season: this would be a very 2020 combo to hit on.

Ohio State RB Trey Sermon To Score A TD (-300)

It’s a little steeper than I’d like to risk normally, but it’s a holiday…err, the national title game. Sermon didn’t really do much of note in the team’s first four games, rushing 45 times for 232 yards and no touchdowns. He gobbled up 112 yards and a touchdown in the regular-season finale at Michigan State (Dec. 5), and then he broke out for 331 rushing yards and two scores in the Big Ten Championship Game against Northwestern.

Sermon also ran angrily against Clemson in the CFP Semifinal in New Orleans, gashing the Tigers for 193 yards at 6.2 yards per tote with a touchdown. Head coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes will lean upon the Georgia native heavily against the Tide.

Alabama QB Mac Jones UNDER 14.5 rushing yards (-110)

This prop seems a little on the high side. Jones posted a season-high 12 rushing yards against Notre Dame in the CFP Semifinal on New Year’s Day, as running the football is just not his thing. Jones actually ran 31 times for just three net positive yards all season with one rushing touchdown at Tennessee Oct. 24.

Yes, sack yardage counts against rushing yardage, and that makes this an even more attractive prop. Ohio State has recorded 19 sacks for 122 yards across its seven games.

Ohio State TE Luke Farrell UNDER 15.5 receiving yards (-110)

In the CFP Semifinal against Clemson it was TE Jeremy Ruckert who surprised with three receptions for 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He now has at least three receptions, at least 25 receiving yards and a total of five touchdown grabs over the past three outings.

Farrell has been lost in the shuffle, going for just five receptions, 37 yards and one touchdown in his four appearances this season. He found the end zone against the Tigers, but he had just 11 yards on two grabs. Expect a similar result and an Under ticket to cash.

Alabama -0.5 – 1st Quarter Spread (-140)

There is a little extra juice attached to this prop, but it’s a good play. Alabama led after the first quarter in 10 of its 12 games this season, including each of the previous eight. In the other two where the Tide wasn’t leading, it was tied 7-7 against Georgia Oct. 17, and 7-7 against Mississippi Oct. 10.

Over the past eight games, ‘Bama has outscored the opposition 104-16 after the first 15 minutes. The Crimson Tide roll to early leads. It’s just what they do, and the CFP title game will be no different.

Alternate Line Parlay – Ohio State +10.5 and Over 55.5 Points (+105)

Ohio State isn’t going to get run out of the building against Alabama, as it comes in with plenty of confidence after exorcising its demons against Clemson last weekend.

While ‘Bama boasts a Heisman finalist in Jones, the Heisman winner in WR DeVonta Smith, and a cadre of NFL-ready players like usual, the Buckeyes have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, too. They’re not going to be fazed by the bright lights, and it isn’t their first rodeo, either. Look for the Buckeyes to keep it within one score before the dust settles, and for the points to be rather plentiful, too.
