Could Justin Reid, Eric Reid team up in the Texans’ secondary?

The Carolina Panthers release of S Eric Reid puts him on the open market. Houston Texans S Justin Reid would favor a pairing up in the AFC South.

The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday they will be releasing safety Eric Reid. The former Pro Bowler won’t be a part of the NFC South club’s plans as they rebuild under rookie coach Matt Rhule.

Reid took to Twitter to express his thanks to the Panthers fan base.

“It’s been a pleasure Carolina!” Reid wrote. “I enjoyed my time and the support I received from the fans, media, teammates, and staff there will be remembered. Looking forward to furthering my career in another city!”

Justin Reid, Eric’s younger brother and dynamic safety for the Houston Texans, retweeted his older brother and added a comment of his own.

“The Reid brothers in Houston,” with a couple emojis.

The likelihood of the pairing up is slim given the Texans have Tashaun Gipson and Eric Murray on the roster. While the latter fills the void left from Jahleel Addae’s contract not being renewed, there is a fourth spot that 38-year-old Mike Adams filled in his last professional season. However, Adams played in six games for Houston and started none of them. The elder Reid is still a viable defensive back with 16 starts in 2019 and 13 the year before that.

Carolina met the Texans in Week 4 last year at NRG Stadium. The Panthers escaped Houston with a 16-10 win with Kyle Allen filling in for Cam Newton. There

“It was just fun to watch him play,” Justin said after the game. “It was just fun for me to be able to play against [running back] Christian (McCaffrey) and then on the sideline I got to watch my big brother play, which was also just as exciting.

“So, we traded jerseys after the game and I’m sure at Thanksgiving or Christmas I’m going to hear about this one again, so he earned that. It was still a fun game.”

There will be at least one brothers battle on the Texans’ 2020 slate when Houston travels to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers.

Panthers projected 2020 depth chart after 1 week of free agency

The Panthers have had another tumultuous offseason so far.

The Panthers have had another tumultuous offseason so far. With new coach Matt Rhule coming in, the roster is being rebuilt or retooled, depending on how you want to describe it. With Cam Newton expected to be released or traded any day now, the team has a new projected starting quarterback and several other new faces.

There’s a lot of time left to finish filling out this 2020 team, so this is not meant to be a complete depth chart, but here’s our best educated guess as to what it looks like right now.

Offense

QB Teddy Bridgewater P.J. Walker Will Grier
RB Christian McCaffrey Reggie Bonnafon Jordan Scarlett Mike Davis Marcus Murphy
WR D.J. Moore Curtis Samuel Seth Roberts Keith Kirkwood Pharoh Cooper Brandon Zylstra Damion Jeanpiere Ishmael Hyman
TE Ian Thomas Chris Manhertz Seth DeValve Temarrick Hemingway
LT Russell Okung Greg Little
LG Dennis Daley
C Matt Paradis Tyler Larsen Chris Reed
RG John Miller
RT Taylor Moton Tyler Marz Matt Kaskey Aaron Monteiro
FB Alex Armah

The big holes on offense are at the guard positions. Only Miller is an obvious starter given his level of experience at right guard. Daley put in some time at left guard as a rookie but he’s still very much a work in progress. If nothing else, the Panthers need to add more interior depth in the remaining weeks of free agency and the draft.

Defense

RDE Brian Burns Marquis Haynes Christian Miller
LDE Stephen Weatherly Chris Smith Efe Obada
DT Kawann Short Woodrow Hamilton
MLB Shaq Thompson Andre Smith
ROLB Tahir Whitehead Sione Teuhema
LOLB Jermaine Carter Jr. Jordan Kunaszyk
RCB Cole Luke
LCB Donte Jackson Dominique Hatfield
SCB Corn Elder
SS Juston Burris T.J. Green Natrell Jamerson
FS Tre Boston Quin Blanding

On this side of the ball, there’s still a lot of holes. At the very least, Carolina needs another starting EDGE to pair with Brian Burns, a few more interior defensive linemen and several more cornerbacks.

Special teams

P Michael Palardy
K Graham Gano Joey Slye Elliott Fry
LS J.J. Jansen
KR Pharoh Cooper
PR Pharoh Cooper

Obviously, the team won’t be carrying three kickers once the season begins. Expect a robust competition between Gano and Slye to see who wins the job.

Former Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy, Cowboys agree to three-year deal

Former Sooners’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cowboys on Tuesday.

Former Sooners’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy agreed to a three-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. The deal is pending a physical.

After three years with the Sooners that included 14.5 sacks, McCoy has played 10 seasons in the NFL. After being drafted third in the 2010 draft, McCoy played nine years with the Buccaneers, totaling 54.5 sacks and earning Pro Bowl status six times.

In his lone season with the Panthers, he finished with five sacks and 15 solo tackles. He signed a one-year, $10.25 million deal one year ago with Carolina.

Now with Dallas, McCoy will be closer to his hometown of Oklahoma City. On March 13, his son Marcellus Crutchfield followed in his father’s footsteps and committed to play for the Sooners.

McCoy joins Demarcus Lawrence, Tyrone Crawford, Maliek Collins, and Antwaun Woods on the Cowboys’ defensive front. The loss of Byron Jones in Dallas’ secondary and a few others over the course of NFL free agency, the Cowboys’ will look to bolster their roster with the upcoming NFL draft.

Eric Reid says he’s been released by the Panthers

The Panthers have released strong safety Eric Reid, who broke the news himself on his Twitter account moments ago.

The Panthers have released strong safety Eric Reid, who broke the news himself on his Twitter account moments ago. In a classy message, Reid thanked the fans, media, his teammates and the staff on his way out.

Reid still had two years left on his contract. According to Over the Cap, cutting Reid before June 1 will save the team $3 million in salary cap space for 2020 but add another $5 million to the dead money total, which has reached ludicrous proportions.

Reid was a first-round pick by the 49ers in the 2013 NFL draft. He was a Pro Bowler for them in his first season but he hasn’t been back since.

In 2019, Reid struggled in coverage and missed more tackles than usual. He claims he played through knee and ankle injuries most of the season.

The Panthers just signed free safety Tre Boston to a three-year extension. Now they’ll have to fill another hole in their defensive backfield.

Panthers Wire Roundtable: Takes on the Cam Newton, Teddy Bridgewater news

To help us sort through all of this, we collected takes from our entire team here at Panthers Wire.

The Panthers were busy on Tuesday, to put it mildly. We learned Cam Newton is being allowed to seek a trade – a development which he was apparently blindsided by. If that wasn’t shocking enough, the team is also finalizing terms with former Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Whether Carolina finds a willing trade partner for Newton or they just release him, we can now rest assured that he won’t be back in 2020 and Bridgewater is projected to be the team’s new starting quarterback.

To help us sort through all of this, we collected takes from our entire team here at Panthers Wire.

Anthony Rizzuti:

In a sensible world, as long as Cam was prepared to suit up without an extension, the Panthers would’ve allowed the most valuable player in their organization’s history to play out what could’ve been a prove-it deal in 2020. If Newton returned to form, they’d still have their franchise quarterback and would then just need to extend him. If he didn’t bounce back, then you walk away scot-free and move on. But it doesn’t seem as if we’re currently living in a sensible world, does it? Now, they opt for Bridgewater, who is a fine player.

The three-year commitment at $21 million a pop, however, screams of a team that isn’t, at all, steadfast in their new approach. Do you want to rebuild and aim for a younger, more promising option at the position or, as this move would indicate, are you fine with mediocrity and a guy that likely won’t put you over the top? And if health issues were really the major concern for Carolina when it came to Cam, well, their new starting quarterback sustained perhaps the most gruesome injury in the sport’s history just three years ago, one that literally left his knee hanging by a single ligament.

Bill Riccette:

This has certainly been one of the most unique situations we’ve seen in Carolina and unfortunately, the team didn’t handle it well with Newton. As for Bridgewater, $21 million a year for three years is not a bad deal at all, especially when you look at other contracts this offseason (including $25 million for Philip Rivers and $29+ million a year for Ryan Tannehill).

It gives the Panthers more financial flexibility. With the salary cap set to explode in 2021, the team will still have plenty of room when the Matt Rhule rebuild/retool era enters year two. This also doesn’t preclude them from taking a QB early in the draft, as they bought more time to develop him. Instead of one year behind Newton, the rookie could spent two years max behind Bridgewater.

It may not have been the smoothest transition, but at least the Panthers now have some sort of plan for the forseeable future.

Erik Williams:

It’s a tough pill to swallow, as Cam Newton has personally been one of my favorite Panthers of all time next to Luke Kuechly. However, in this new era of Panther football, I do think trading Cam is what is best for the team going forward. Let’s get one thing straight. Newton is not a realistic fit in Joe Brady’s offense no matter how much we want him to be. Brady’s offense is all about finding a quarterback who can make quick reads and get the ball out fast and accurately.

We all know how much Newton has struggled with hitting slants, drags, or curls and going through his progressions over the course of his career. Bridgewater is a much more efficient and accurate passer who demonstrated that he can be a rock-solid quarterback this past season when Drew Brees missed some time with a thumb injury. Also, after operating in a New Orleans offense that is much like Brady’s, Bridgewater is already familiar with the playbook and will be able to hit the ground running.

As far as the contract side of things, I think it’s an A+ for the Panthers. They get a quality starting quarterback who could blossom into a top-10 QB in Brady’s system on a team-friendly deal. Now, let’s see what Carolina gets in return for Cam before we make a final judgment.

Gerald Huggins:

For many fans, they never thought they would see the day that Cam Newton would be forced out of Carolina. The former league MVP and face of the franchise was never given the proper support from the Panthers during his run at QB, nor at any point during this offseason.

There was never any reassurance that the Panthers wanted to move forward with Newton as their starting quarterback. It seemed like most fans remained optimistic about Newton remaining in Carolina but this was always a possibility given his history of injuries and going into the last year of his contract. The main issue with this Newton situation is the Panthers will likely not receive any draft picks via trade. Most likely, they will have to settle with releasing Newton and saving cap space after offering Teddy Bridgewater a three-year, $63 million dollar contract.

The Panthers will have to convince fans that what they’re doing makes sense because many are confused about the direction of the team right now.

Lucas Ewing:

The Panthers’ handling of the roster in the past few weeks has sent mixed signals about the team’s future and sense of direction.

The team started by releasing tight end Greg Olsen, then traded Trai Turner – the only notable guard on the roster –  for left tackle Russell Okung. They let James Bradberry, the only serviceable corner from last year, walk to the Giants and defensive end Mario Addison do the same to Buffalo. Former Browns’ Safety Juston Burris and Vikings’ defensive lineman Stephen Weatherly may add defensive depth, but they will not replace any of the starters they’ve lost.

Now the team is announcing their goodbyes to franchise star Cam Newton. One might assume the team had their eyes on Clemson phenom Trevor Lawrence, but only moments later it came out that they’re finalizing a contract with journeyman quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

It’s clear the team is tiptoeing the line between a retool and a total rebuild.  But with a league-leading $29.5 million in dead cap with more to come in the next few days, a plethora of holes on the roster and only seven draft picks to show for it, it’s worth asking if the team even has an idea of what they are doing going forward.

Tim Weaver:

It’s difficult to separate the Teddy Bridgewater transaction from the way Cam Newton was mismanaged the last few years and is now unceremoniously being shown the door. Newton deserved better. However, we have to try to judge the Bridgewater signing on its own merits.

I like Teddy and think he’s a good fit for this team, even suggesting him as a potential free agent target over the last two offseasons – albeit with the idea for him to be Newton’s backup. It made sense with Norv and Scott Turner running the show and it makes sense now with Joe Brady calling the plays. Bridgewater’s familiarity with Brady’s scheme will help ease the transition. The price is also a reasonable one for Bridgewater’s talents. $21 million a year for a solid starter is agreeable enough, considering Patrick Mahomes will soon be commanding double that.

All that being said, this is a step backwards at QB. The Panthers will miss Newton’s ability to extend plays with his legs. Bridgewater is not nearly as mobile and defenses won’t have to account for him as anywhere near the rushing threat Cam is. He also can’t match Newton’s arm strength or willingness to take shots down the field.

Bridgewater is an effective game manager – one of the best in the league right now. He’s just not as aggressive, dynamic or capable of carrying a team the way Newton can when he’s healthy.

Best bets to acquire Cam Newton

Chicago Bears +140

The Bears have been very public about their interests in acquiring a veteran free agent to challenge incumbent starter Mitchell Trubisky in 2020. They had been loosely tied to Bridgewater, but now seem focused on either Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton or Jacksonville Jaguars QB Nick Foles.

Newton is a significant upgrade over both of those veterans, and in all likelihood over Trubisky, as well. Signed for just the 2020 season, he could allow the Bears to give Trubisky a much need refresh on the bench, before trying again with the former second overall pick in 2021.

Los Angeles Chargers +165

The Chargers allowed Philip Rivers to walk away in free agency and are now one of three teams picking at the top of the 2020 NFL Draft with a clear need at quarterback. With Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa likely to go to the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins, respectively, they may be fine settling for Jordan Love or Justin Herbert, or may choose to address another position of need.

Acquiring Newton allows the Chargers to address one of those other positions, while potentially targeting a rookie in the second or third round. If Newton flames out or proves to be not fully healthy, they could find themselves picking at the top of the 2021 draft in what’s expected to be a strong QB class, led by Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.

New England Patriots +450

The Patriots are the fourth team without a clear starting option for the 2020 season already on the roster. They’re unlikely to turn from Brady to 2019 backup Jarrett Stidham.

Fitting Newton into head coach Bill Belichick’s ball-control system seems the biggest challenge, but the Pats are quickly running out of viable options.

Jacksonville Jaguars +2000

Already looking to unload Foles after just one year and left largely unimpressed with Gardner Minshew following his rookie season, the Jaguars could use a positive splash to help change the franchise trajectory. Newton immediately injects some star power into the roster and finally inspires some confidence at the most important position.

Report: Bears showing interest in trading for Cam Newton

According to one NFL insider, the Bears have been in contact with the Panthers regarding a trade for quarterback Cam Newton.

[jwplayer ZzvU3cy7]

Despite not making a move at quarterback this offseason, the Bears have been active in the quarterback market since the start of the NFL’s “legal tampering” period ahead of free agency.

They’ve shown interest in everyone from Teddy Bridgewater to Andy Dalton to Nick Foles. But it sounds like there might be a new target for general manager Ryan Pace.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Bears have been in contact with the Panthers regarding a trade for quarterback Cam Newton.

It’s expected that the Panthers, who recently agreed to terms with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, will release Newton in the coming days. But according to Jones, Chicago might not want to compete for Newton in the open market. So they could be looking to get things done now.

The Panthers put an end to the Cam Newton era in Carolina, when they announced that he could “seek a trade” elsewhere. Carolina, meanwhile, agreed to a massive deal with Bridgewater to make him their new starter.

The trade would make sense for the Bears. Newton has one year left on his current contract, and the Bears are in win-now mode, as evidenced by the moves Pace has already made this offseason.

Obviously the one thing that’s a question mark surrounding Newton is his health. With the NFL on lockdown with the coronavirus pandemic, there’s no way for Newton to take a physical to prove he’s good to go. But you figure, since Newton would make this team better, that it would be worth it to find out.

The one thing that’s been made abundantly clear through these last three days has been the lack of confidence this organization has in current starter Mitchell Trubisky.

Like they always say, actions speak louder than words. And that’s always what Pace has been like.

Will Newton wind up in navy and orange? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Details on Teddy Bridgewater’s contract with the Panthers

The New Orleans Saints lost free agent Teddy Bridgewater to the Carolina Panthers, where the quarterback will earn $21 million annually.

[jwplayer s9f9SXlK-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints lost backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Carolina Panthers, with the 27-year-old passer expected to sign a three-year, $63 million contract as a free agent. ESPN’s Dan Graziano first reported the details on Bridgewater’s agreed-upon deal.

Carrying a $15 million signing bonus and $40 million in guarantees over the first two years, Bridgewater will also earn base salaries of $8 million in 2020, $17 million in 2021, and $20 million in 2022. He also has the typical workout and roster bonuses you’ll find in most NFL contracts.

A $21 million annual take is a nice payday for Bridgewater, and it will qualify the Saints for a third-round draft pick in 2021 should they remain quiet in free agency. That would replace the 2018 draft pick traded away to acquire him, bringing things full-circle. For added symbolism, Bridgewater will play against the Saints twice a year for NFC South-rival Carolina.

What’s interesting about the contract’s structure is that the Panthers can get out of it as soon as 2021 if they really want to, though cutting Bridgewater next offseason would only save $3 million against the salary cap. But if the Panthers make a move for a quarterback prospect in next month’s draft and think they offer a better chance to win than Bridgewater, a pathway out of this deal has been drawn up in case they need it.

Report: Panthers have been in contact with Bears about Cam Newton trade

The Carolina Panthers have screwed up this whole Cam Newton thing at literally every step, but they’re still trying to get something out of it.

The Carolina Panthers have screwed up this whole Cam Newton thing at literally every step, but they’re still trying to get something out of it.

First, they mismanaged his shoulder and foot injuries, going back to December of 2016. Then, they hurt his trade value by publicly questioning his health and making it clear they’re moving on with a tone-deaf social media campaign yesterday.

Now, their best hope may be to fool a team that’s desperate enough at quarterback to give them a draft pick in exchange. That probably makes the Chicago Bears their best potential trade partner.

According to Jonathan Jones at CBS Sports, Carolina has been talking to Chicago about a potential Newton trade.

As Jones notes, the team is now expected to release Newton in the coming days, so there’s a strong chance the Bears won’t even bite.

For what it’s worth, they need an upgrade at quarterback as much as any team in the league. Trading up for Mitchell Trubisky will go down as one of the worst draft decisions in modern history and he’s done nothing over the last three years to prove he can become a respectable long-term starter. Newton is going to miss a throw here and there, but he’s vastly more accurate and talented than Trubisky in every conceivable way.

Chicago has never gotten the QB position right, though. When Jay Cutler is the best in franchise history, you know it’s been a real problem. It would frankly come as a shock if they’re smart enough to either trade for or sign Newton. The Bears are also reported to be interested in Nick Foles and Andy Dalton.

Most likely, we’ll see Newton released in the coming days.

That move would save the Panthers about $19.1 million in cap space and add $2 million more to the ocean of 2020 dead money. It would also be a fitting end to a frustrating era. We can only wonder what Carolina could have accomplished with Newton if he’d ever had a proper supporting cast.

Our best guess is that he will land with the Patriots, who are in need of a replacement now that Tom Brady is joining the Buccaneers.

Teddy Bridgdewater Contract: Details on Panthers QB’s 3-year deal

The contract is worth $63 million over three years.

The Cam Newton era is just about over in Carolina. Yesterday, we learned the team is allowing Newton’s reps to seek a trade, even though Cam says he never asked for it and is being forced out.

While it’s a shame the way that the Panthers mismanaged Newton these last few years and bungled his exit, we have to try to evaluate the Teddy Bridgewater signing on its own merits.

The deal won’t become official until 4:00 p.m. ET later today, but the parameters have been agreed to and now we have some more details, courtesy of Dan Graziano at ESPN.

  • The contract is worth $63 million over three years
  • The deal includes a $15 million signing bonus
  • $40 million is guaranteed in the first two years

Here’s how it breaks down by year for his base salary:

2020: $8 million (fully guaranteed)

2021: $17 million (fully guaranteed)

2022: $20 million

There are also the usual workout and roster bonuses you see with every NFL contract.

Panthers fans have plenty of reason to feel upset about the way Newton was treated and Bridgewater is a step down at quarterback. However, this is a pretty reasonable contract for a solid starting QB in this era. Russell Wilson is currently leading the position with $35 million a year and will soon be surpassed by Patrick Mahomes, who will likely command at least $40 million per season.
