Panthers’ Eddy Piñeiro is now NFL’s most accurate FG kicker ever . . . and he didn’t even play this week

Carolina Panthers kicker Eddy Piñeiro became the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history on Sunday . . . and he didn’t even play. Here’s how:

Carolina Panthers kicker Eddy Piñeiro became the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history on Sunday . . . and he didn’t even play.

Piñeiro, while enjoying his team’s bye, entered Week 11 with a career field goal rate of 89.381 percent—the second-highest ever. That mark had him barely behind Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, who sat atop the all-time list at 89.716 percent.

Well, Tucker didn’t have himself a very good showing against the Pittsburgh Steelers this afternoon.

The future Hall of Famer started off his outing by missing on a 47-yard attempt almost 10 minutes into the first quarter. He’d then miss his next try, a 50-yarder, on Baltimore’s very next possession.

Tucker was able to shake off the pair of whiffs to successfully convert on his third go, a 54-yarder with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter. But it wouldn’t be enough to recover in the ranks.

Those misses, even along with the make, now have Tucker at 89.347 percent—.034 percent below Piñeiro.

Congrats, Steady Eddy!

Raiders activate former 2nd round WR Week 11 vs Dolphins

For the first time since signing Terrace Marshall to the practice squad, he will be active Sunday vs the Dolphins.

For the first time since Terrace Marshall was signed to the Raiders practice squad three weeks ago, he’s getting called up to action.

The former round two pick by the Panthers in the 2021 draft played three seasons in Carolina, appearing in 36 games with 16 starts.

The 6-2, 200-pounder has 64 career catches for 767 yards and one touchdown. His best season was in 2022 when he caught 28 passes for 490 yards (17.5 yards per catch) and a touchdown.

But after a down year, he was released in the final roster cuts last August. He caught on with the 49ers on their practice squad but was released again last week and scooped up by the Raiders, who could certainly use some help at receiver.

With Davante Adams traded to New York, the Raiders have not been able to suitably fill his role in the offense. Jakobi Meyers has stepped up as the team’s top receiver, but in the five weeks since the trade, Tre Tucker has just nine catches for 85 yards.

Additionally, the Raiders activated C Will Putnam with Andre James OUT with an ankle injury and the offensive line depleted.

Sean Payton will attempt to sweep NFC South on Sunday

Sean Payton’s Broncos have outscored NFC South opponents 87-31 this fall. They’ll attempt to sweep the division when they host the Falcons.

Sean Payton won seven NFC South division titles and reached three NFC championship games during his time with the New Orleans Saints.

Now coaching the Denver Broncos, Payton has faced some familiar faces this season because the NFL’s schedule rotation has AFC West teams playing NFC South teams in 2024.

So far, the Broncos are 3-0 against Payton’s old division with a 26-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a 33-10 win over the Saints and a 28-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers. After winning the previous matchups by combined scores of 87-31, Denver will look to complete an NFC South sweep when the Atlanta Falcons visit this weekend.

Payton was asked during his media availability on Wednesday if he’s extra competitive when facing teams from his old division.

“I don’t think so,” Payton said. “It’s a fair question. There have been so many changes. Atlanta’s new offensively and defensively. Carolina is new. Tampa certainly with Todd [Bowles] but I don’t think — you might know some personnel. The New Orleans thing was different, but I don’t think with the other three. They’re just the next team, and you dive into the scheme, you dive into the players and who does what well. That would be my answer.”

Sunday’s game will be regionally televised on Fox (view the TV map). Playing at home, the Broncos are considered slight favorites in Week 11.

Panthers bring back TE to practice squad on Friday

The Panthers have signed TE Jordan Matthews to their practice squad for the third time this season.

Jordan Matthews is back . . . again.

As announced on Friday morning, the Carolina Panthers have signed the 10th-year tight end to their practice squad. This marks his third stint as a member of the group this season.

Matthews was released from the active roster this past Tuesday. His spot would go to wide receiver Adam Thielen, who was officially activated after missing the last seven games due to a hamstring injury.

The Panthers have used Matthews in four of their 10 outings in 2024. He’s played 26 snaps on offense, where he has tallied one target, and 61 snaps on special teams.

Although he has yet to record a single catch for Carolina over the last two seasons, Matthews was the team’s second-leading receiver from this past preseason. He reeled in seven balls for 68 yards and a touchdown during the summer.

He now fills the spot on the practice squad left by the release of wide receiver Cam Johnson, who was also moved on Tuesday.

Panthers All-22 film review: Bryce Young’s giant win in Germany

Panthers QB Bryce Young may have found his edge.

The Carolina Panthers, for the first time since 2022, have themselves a winning streak. And that recent success can be attributed, in part, to the recent resurgence of quarterback Bryce Young.

Young put forth a third straight encouraging performance in this past Sunday’s 20-17 win over the New York Giants. But his stat line—which reads for 15 completions on 25 attempts, 126 yards and a touchdown—doesn’t tell the full story. In this case, the film gives us a much better picture of how last year’s No. 1 overall pick is getting closer to living up to his billing.

Let’s take a look at some of Young’s best looks from the All-22, starting with the first play from scrimmage on Carolina’s second possession of the game . . .

The film

Young has a seven-man protection working from under center and play-action. This is a well-executed front, but notice the quarterback navigate, manipulate and anticipate.

As Young climbs the pocket, you can see the two deep-third defenders begin to bail to the post while the high-hole linebacker ever so slightly creeps towards the line of scrimmage, opening the second window to throw into.

The ability to distribute as a point guard of sorts, a strength we saw so often from the University of Alabama version of Young, hasn’t showed up consistently in the NFL. It did, however, show on the first touchdown of the contest.

At the top of his drop, he slips on the grass only to regain his balance to keep his eyes on moving targets. With nothing available, he works to open grass before quickly dumping the pass off to an open Ja’Tavion Sanders in the end zone to conclude their first 90-yard drive of the game.

Young continued to play and throw with great anticipation. At the start of Carolina’s second 90-yard scoring drive, the offense is facing second-and-6 deep in their own territory.

This is an instance of head coach Dave Canales finding the stable of what the Panthers passing game could be. In recent weeks, over routes and crossing patterns against high safety and low linebackers have generated second-window anticipation throws for the quarterback for early down wins and chunk plays. This is one of those plays.

Standout rookie receiver Jalen Coker is running an over route, seemingly looking for the void in the high hole. Young places this ball over Coker’s frame, an accurate throw above the linebacker.

The toss is another high-level anticipatory pass—because if you pause the video of when Young is about to begin his throwing motion, Coker is just behind the linebacker on the field side.

One of the biggest improvements from Young since returning to the starting lineup is his composure and poise in tough situations. The Young of old would’ve likely made an indecisive decision on this play, a second-and-11 after back-to-back penalties negated a touchdown.

Instead, Canales calls an almost identical play from a week ago, where running back Chuba Hubbard hits a flat to the sideline while wideout David Moore has an inside dig, or short post. Again, this is another anticipation throw in a tough down and distance inside the red zone.

The Giants are playing off-man Cover 1—and as the linebacker attempts to cover Hubbard in the flat, he collides with Moore. Generally, Young has shown to get spooked by this disruption in the past. Instead, he shows trust in his receiver to make the play.

By the time Moore gets his head around, the ball is already out and away from the defender—allowing him to convert and help set up Hubbard’s rushing touchdown. This is sound execution from the quarterback and wide receiver.

The verdict

Young should be the starting quarterback for Carolina moving forward. This should not be a week-to-week evaluation from the head coach.

His month-long benching may have been a blessing in disguise. He looks a lot more confident as a passer and is playing soundly with composure and poise.

Young did miss some throws and had a few others dropped, but the tape showed a second-year quarterback who has possibly found his edge again. I didn’t find a single turnover-worthy pass, which shows how clean of a game he had.

Canales should not be toying or messing around with the most important position on the team. It’s hard to say if he still believes in Young with the way he has voiced and worded his thoughts on both signal-callers.

Whether it’s an odd attempt at gamesmanship or trying to keep the quarterback room competitive, it is starting to get old fast. If Canales and his staff are so adamant about being a development group, then Young is the obvious choice to be the starter—regardless of how he performs week in and week out.

Cam Newton explains why he believes Panthers are ‘avoiding his legacy’ in emotional video

Cam Newton feels as though the Panthers have been avoiding his legacy. He revealed why in an emotional video from Thursday.

The greatest Carolina Panther of all-time isn’t feeling the love from the Carolina Panthers.

On Thursday’s episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, Cam Newton was asked about the organization’s trip to Munich, Germany from this past weekend. The visit featured a handful of former Panthers players representing the franchise as ambassadors—including Steve Smith Sr., Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly.

That group, however, did not include Newton—who says he was not invited overseas.

A visibly bothered Newton then stated that the Panthers do not have any images of him up at their home of Bank of America Stadium, something he painfully learned while returning to the building for a seven-on-seven tournament last year.

“We went into the Panthers’ facility and . . . you mean to tell me that one of the greatest Panthers to ever play ain’t up nowhere? Nowhere. I’m talkin’ nowhere,” he said. “Who brought it to my attention? My son. So as a man, when you have to explain to your son . . . ‘Daddy, where’s your picture?’

“Then you know what the tour guide person said? ‘Oh, if you go up on the second and third level, Cam’s all over the place. I seen Jake Delhomme. I seen Thomas Davis. I seen Luke Kuechly. I seen Julius Peppers. I seen Steve Smith.

“At this particular point in time, the question was ‘Oh, we don’t know if Cam’s retired yet.’ News flash—I’m never gonna retire. I know I’ve played my last piece of football. It don’t matter to me to officially retire. I’m in a happy place.”

He also claimed that he reached out to the Panthers in the past about doing a live taping of his show involving himself, old teammates and current quarterback Bryce Young—but to no avail.

Newton led the Panthers to three NFC South titles, four playoff appearances and their second-ever Super Bowl appearance. On top of being the franchise’s all-time leading passer, he’s also the only Panther to win Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year.

His last down came in 2021.

Former Panthers WR set to make his Cowboys debut in Week 11

WR Jonathan Mingo, who was traded by the Panthers last week, is expected to make his Cowboys debut on Monday night.

A former Carolina Panthers wideout is about to hit the reset button on his NFL career.

Jonathan Mingo, now a member of the Dallas Cowboys, is expected to make his team debut this Monday night against the Houston Texans. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the news about the second-year receiver on Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers selected Mingo with the 39th overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft. He’d go on to appear in 24 games with Carolina, amassing just 539 yards and no touchdowns on 55 receptions.

Mingo was traded to Dallas last Tuesday, just a few hours before the league trade deadline.

Panthers president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan explained the deal a day later.

“Great player, still a developing player,” Morgan said of Mingo. “Thought it was a good deal between us and Dallas. They get a young player that they can grow and develop and we get a draft pick we’re happy with. So, I think it was a win-win for both sides.”

Morgan and the Panthers received a 2025 fourth-round pick for Mingo and a 2025 seventh-round pick.
