Cardinals facing pivotal game in Week 4 against the Panthers

The Cardinals cannot afford to lose in Carolina with a tough upcoming schedule and competitive division.

It isn’t often that a Week 4 game feels like a must-win, but that’s exactly where we are with the Arizona Cardinals.

Aside from a miraculous comeback win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2, the Cardinals have not looked like a playoff team. It’s to the point where they are underdogs against the lowly Panthers this Sunday.

Carolina is not a good team. They did manage to beat the Saints last week, but it was an uninspiring effort. Their other two games are losses to the Browns and Giants.

The Cardinals are lacking star power on defense and are missing many key skill position players on offense. Perhaps some of the defensive woes can be mitigated as we approach the trade deadline, but the Cardinals must first accomplish one goal.

The Cardinals must be no worse than 3-3 when DeAndre Hopkins returns from suspension.

Around that time is the projected return of Rondale Moore, where the Cardinals offense will be complete. The receiving corps of Hopkins, Hollywood Brown, Rondale Moore and Greg Dortch is very, very promising.

A loss to Carolina, however, and the Cardinals find themselves at 1-3, with their next game against the red-hot Philadelphia Eagles. If they cannot beat the Panthers, they give no reason to inspire confidence in beating Philadelphia.

The primary concern for Cardinals fans is how much Carolina has dominated the Cards in recent memory. The Panthers have not lost to the Cardinals since 2013.

If the Cardinals can break that streak and beat the Panthers, they have some room to work with. They’ll just need to win one of their next two games (Eagles, Seahawks) and they’ll be 3-3 for the return of Hopkins.

While Hopkins isn’t going to play edge rusher or inside linebacker like the team so desperately needs, getting him back at .500 is a major boost. General Manager Steve Keim has made an impact trade before the deadline each of the past three seasons, giving reason to believe he’ll do so again.

If the Cardinals can reach .500 and get back their best wideout and add some defensive reinforcements, they could be in good shape. If not, there is little optimism for improvement.

Cardinals worked out pair of DTs following Rashard Lawrence’s hand injury

With Rashard Lawrence set to miss at least one game after hand surgery, the Cardinals look at some depth on the defensive line.

The Arizona Cardinals will be down a defensive lineman at least one week following the hand injury to defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence. He had surgery Monday and will miss at least one game.

In a move that could lead to signings to the practice squad, the Cardinals worked out a pair of defensive linemen, according to the NFL transaction report on Tuesday.

Who were they?

What’s new with the Panthers in 2022?

Take a look at how the Panthers are different since these two teams last met in November of 2021.

The Carolina Panthers have been a complete mess during the Matt Rhule era, yet have continued their dominance over the Cardinals.

Last season, the Panthers killed the Cards 34-10 at State Farm Stadium. The previous year, the Panthers beat the Cards 31-21 in Carolina.

This offseason, the Panthers acquired former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield from the Browns with hopes to finally end their quarterback carousel.

To this point, Mayfield has been shaky outside of a near-comeback against his former team in Week 1. His highest passing yardage total is 234, although he has limited the interceptions, only throwing one to this point.

The Panthers did not make many splash moves in free agency outside of Mayfield, but made an effort to re-sign many of their own and bring in solid starters.

One of the few they let go, surprisingly, was former Cardinal Haason Reddick. Reddick had 11 sacks for the Panthers last season, yet Carolina opted to let him walk.

They also allowed Stephon Gilmore to walk in free agency after trading for him before the deadline in October. Gilmore, who had been connected to the Cardinals on numerous occasions, eventually signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Panthers added a few starters in Xavier Woods, Austin Corbett, Matt Ioannidis and Johnny Hekker. All are solid contributors and certainly make the team better.

The Panthers’ clear goal of the offseason was a belief in their core players to be elevated by quarterback stability. They have a solid offensive core running back Christian McCaffrey and receivers D.J. Moore and Robbie Anderson, but they have yet to put up tons of points.

Defensively, their young group continues to improve,  highlighted by Jeremy Chinn, Brian Burns, Jaycee Horn and Yetur Gross-Matos. That unit will be facing a decimated Cardinals offense this Sunday.

Here’s a more detailed list of the Panthers’ offseason moves:

Panthers’ key offseason additions

  • G Austin Corbett
  • DL Matt Ioannidis
  • S Xavier Woods
  • P Johnny Hekker
  • LB Corey Littleton
  • LB Damien Wilson

Panthers’ key offseason losses

  • CB Stephon Gilmore
  • QB Cam Newton
  • OLB Haason Reddick

Cardinals promote LB Jesse Luketa, release S Deionte Thompson

The Cardinals now have seven outside linebackers on the roster and only two safeties.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a couple of roster moves that will be a bit of a surprise. They released safety Deionte Thompson and signed rookie linebacker Jesse Luketa from the practice squad to the active roster.

It is surprising because it leaves the Cardinals with only two safeties on the roster and gives them seven outside linebackers.

The move could be for special teams but perhaps there is an injury to someone in the outside linebacker room.

With only two safeties on the roster, if Thompson clears waivers and is re-signed to the practice squad, he could be elevated to the active roster for the game this week.

Luketa was a seventh-round pick out of Penn State by the Cardinals this year. He stood out in the preseason and the team wanted to keep him on the active roster but didn’t have the numbers with some of the injuries they had.

Thompson, drafted in the fifth round in 2019, had been with the Cardinals for four seasons.

Cardinals are slight road underdogs vs. Panthers in Week 4

The Cardinals are 2.5-point underdogs on the road in Week 4 against the 1-2 Carolina Panthers.

The Arizona Cardinals have not had a lead in a game this season in regulation. The only lead they had was the last play of an overtime win in Week 2.

As a result, they are underdogs for the fourth straight week.

They open the week as slight road underdogs as they prepare to face the 1-2 Carolina Panthers.

The Cardinals lost 20-12 in Week 3 to the Los Angeles Rams, falling behind 13-0 and never getting into the ed zone.

The Panthers had a 22-14 win over the New Orleans Saints. They failed to crack 300 yards of offense for the third straight game, but the defense forced three turnovers and scored a touchdown.

Let’s look at the odds and lines for the Cardinals vs. Panthers Week 4 matchup, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

Cardinals at Panthers Week 4 odds and lines

Money line:

  • Cardinals (+105)
  • Panthers (-125)

At +105 odds, the Cardinals have 48.78% implied odds of winning. A $100 money line bet on the Cardinals would win $105 if they win the game. Arizona is 1-2 straight up this season.

At -125 odds, the Panthers have 55.56% implied odds of winning. A $125 money line wager on the Panthers wins $100 if they are the outright winners. They are 1-2 straight up this season.

Against the spread (ATS)

  • Cardinals +2.5 (-115)
  • Panthers -2.5 (-105)

A $115 ATS bet on the Cardinals will win $100 if the Cardinals win the game, tie with the Panthers or lose by no more than two points. The Cardinals are 1-2 ATS this season.

It would take a $105 ATS bet on the Panthers to win $100 if they beat the Cardinals by at least three points. Carolina is 1-2 ATS as well.

Total (Over/under)

  • Over 43.5 (-108)
  • Under 43.5 (-112)

If the two teams combine for 44 points or more, a $108 bet on the Over wins $100.

If they combine for 43 or less, a $112 bet on the Under wins $100.

Arizona is 1-1-1 O/U, while Carolina is 1-2 O/U.

Cardinals vs. Panthers head-to-head

The Cardinals and Panthers have met 19 times total in their history — 16 times in the regular season and three times in the playoffs.

The Panthers lead the all-time series 14-5. They are 12-4 against the Cardinals in the regular season and 2-1 against them in the postseason.

The Panthers have won six straight meetings against the Cardinals, including two playoff games.

Arizona has not beaten Carolina since 2013. The last five matchups have had totals of 44 or more points.

OL Justin Pugh, LB Zaven Collins should play vs. Panthers

After a first-half elbow injury, Pugh played in the second half vs. the Rams. Kliff Kingsbury says Collins “should be okay.”

The Arizona Cardinals could be missing another pair of starters when they take on the Carolina Panthers this coming Sunday, as receiver A.J. Green suffered a bone bruise and defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence injured his hand and had surgery Monday, but it could have been worse.

Two starters who exited the game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, should be good to go this week against the Panthers.

Starting left guard Justin Pugh exited the game with an elbow injury in the first half but returned to the lineup after halftime and finished the game.

On Monday, head coach Kliff Kingsbury said that Pugh would be day-to-day.

“I’m hopeful he can play on Sunday,” he said.

Collins injured his shoulder on the play the Rams scored their final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“I think Zaven should be okay,” Kingsbury said. “We’ll see how he feels on Wednesday, but it didn’t seem to be too serious today when I saw him.”

Cardinals DL Rashard Lawrence to miss time after hand surgery

The Cardinals will be down a starting defensive lineman at least one week as Lawrence had hand surgery Monday.

The Arizona Cardinals will be down a defensive lineman this next week as they prepare to take on the Carolina Panthers. Defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence will miss time with a hand injury.

Lawrence had hand surgery Monday, Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Monday.

“I’m not sure of the exact timetable, but he won’t play this week,” he said.

Lawrence injured his hand in the second half of the Cardinals’ 20-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He played 19 defensive snaps in the game.

He landed on injured reserve each of his first two seasons in the NFL. Hopefully, he only has to miss a game or two. With him out, Jonathan Ledbetter will get to play. He has been inactive for each of the last two games.

Lawrence did nor register a tackle in the game on Sunday. Through three games, he has four tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

Cardinals Week 4 opponent Panthers trade for QB Baker Mayfield

The Cardinals will face Mayfield for the third time in four seasons as he goes from the Browns to the Panthers, whom the Cardinals face in Week 4.

The Arizona Cardinals get to face quarterback Baker Mayfield for the third time in four seasons. The Carolina Panthers, whom the Cardinals face on the road in Week 4 in the regular season, acquired Mayfield in a trade on Wednesday.

The Panthers gave up a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2024 and will not have to pay his entire 2022 salary. Mayfield was due to make nearly $19 million on his fifth-year rookie option.

The Browns pay him a $10.5 million bonus to make the deal happen. The Panthers will be on the hook for almost $4.9 million in salary with another $3.5 million in incentives.

Mayfield will presumably supplant Sam Darnold as the projected starting quarterback for the Panthers, who also drafted Matt Corral in the third round this year.

The Cardinals beat Mayfield twice as a member of the Browns. In 2019, Kyler Murray’s rookie season, the Cardinals beat the Browns 38-24 behind four Kenyan Drake rushing touchdowns. Then, last season, the Cardinals blew them out 37-14 as they sacked Mayfield five times and intercepted him once.

The Cardinals have not beaten the Panthers since 2013.

Murray and Mayfield were college teammates and are friends. It will be fun to see how this Week 4 matchup turns out.

Isaiah Simmons is being criminally under-utilized by Cardinals

With back to back losses for the Arizona Cardinals, is it time for them to unleash their 8th overall pick, Isaiah Simmons?

There were plenty of angry reactions from fans following the Arizona Cardinals’ Week 4 loss to the Carolina Panthers. One of them, and perhaps the most logical of the bunch, was questioning the almost non-existent use of 2020 No. 8 overall pick Isaiah Simmons.

Simmons was called for a horse collar tackle on Arizona’s first defensive drive of the season in San Francisco. he was then burnt by RB Raheem Mostert for a 76-yard touchdown. Since then, he has hardly seen the field.

When the Cardinals started off 2-0 and had back-to-back exceptional defensive performances, the benching of Simmons was looked past.

The Cardinals are now 2-2, and are coming off a terrible defensive performance.

The time is now to play Isaiah Simmons.

Despite the recent performance against the Panthers, the Cardinals defense has been reasonably improved since last year, particularly when they had their starting safeties. Still, it is not enough in its current state to compete with the high-flying offenses of the NFC West.

Outside of Budda Baker, the Cards are missing speed and another sideline-to-sideline defender. Simmons fits that bill.

He may not be ready. That much is clear. However, playing practice squad safeties that are consistently getting burnt in coverage is not an acceptable alternative.

Simmons was a standout at Clemson and earned the Butkus Award in 2019. Here’s a quick recap of the last group of players to win that coveted award.

2018- Devin White

2017-Roquan Smith

2016- Reuben Foster

2015- Jaylon Smith

2014- Eric Kendricks

2013- C.J. Mosley

2012- Manti T’eo

2011- Luke Kuechly

2010-Von Miller

Those are some elite NFL players that won the Butkus award in previous years. One would imagine last year’s winner will be pretty good in his own right.

Until the Cardinals defense starts playing well enough to win football games again, Simmons should not be on the bench. His athleticism and ball skills are something this defense could desperately use right now.

The defense needs a spark. Let Simmons be just that.
