Cardinals can kill Bengals’ morale with win in Week 5

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says the Bengals need a win over the Cardinals for “morale.”

The Arizona Cardinals, despite being 1-3, have been competitive in every game this season. Their 1-3 record looks different than the 1-3 record their Week 5 opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals, has.

The Bengals are struggling offensively. Quarterback Joe Burrow has been battling a calf strain and has not played a the level as he has previously done.

They come to Glendale this weekend a desperate team.

“We haven’t had a road win yet,” Burrow said, according to ESPN’s Ben Baby. “We pride ourselves on the road on playing really good football, good defense, good scheme. We need it for morale, we need it for our ranking, we need it for everything.”

If the Bengals need a win for their morale, the Cardinals can prove to be morale crushers.

It would be tough for the Bengals to bounce back from a 1-4 start, expecting to be a contender in the AFC.

But with the talent they have on offense, they are bound to break out at some point. Will it be this weekend?

The Cardinals hope not.

Bengals have never beaten Cardinals on road

The Bengals are 0-4 in four road games against the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals will host the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium in Week 5. The two teams have only played 12 times dating back to 1973.

Each has won six games in the all-time series. The Cardinals have won four of the last 5 meetings.

But there is something the Bengals have never done.

They have never beaten the Cardinals on the road. They are 0-4 in four road games against the Cardinals, 0-3 in Arizona.

The Cardinals beat the Bengals 41-27 in 1985, the only time they faced each other in St. Louis.

In 1994, the Cardinals won 28-7 in Sun Devil Stadium.

Still in Sun Devil Stadium in 2003, the Cardinals won 17-14.

The last time the Bengals were on the road against the Cardinals, it was in 2015. The Cardinals won that game 34-31.

The Cardinals hope to make it five straight home wins over the Bengals on Sunday.

The Bengals have struggled in two road games this season. Even so, they are favored by three points.

Bengals have been awful on the road in 2023

The Cardinals host a struggling Bengals team in Week 5 that has been dreadful on the road in 2023.

The Arizona Cardinals welcome a struggling Cincinnati Bengals team this weekend in Week 5. Both teams are 1-3 but the Bengals have struggled while the Cardinals have been competitive.

The Bengals have especially struggled on the road.

They are 0-2 in two road contests.

Here are some of the numbers.

  • They have scored only six points in two games (three points each game)
  • They have averaged 176.5 yards offensively.
  • They have allowed an average of 375 yards per game.
  • They have allowed 279 rushing yards (139.5 per game).

The Cardinals have been tough defensively and solid offensively, especially at home. They have scored 28 points in each of their two home games.

They run the ball well. James Conner is No. 3 in the NFL in rushing yards.

The Bengals are favored in this game, but they will have to play drastically better on Sunday if they think they can beat a scrappy Cardinals team.

The Arizona Cardinals began their week of practice in Week 5 with a longer injury report. Part of that reason was the return to practice of a pair of players who were designated to return from NFI and injured reserve.

Cardinals to debut new black uniforms vs. Bengals

This will be the first use of their new, redesigned black uniforms.

The Arizona Cardinals have new monochrome uniforms this season. They wore their red uniforms for the first three weeks of the season. They debuted their road whites in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers.

This week in Week 5, they will debut their alternate black uniforms.

The team’s social media account referenced going black.

It will be their first game in their new black uniforms but it won’t be their first game with their black helmets. They used them once last season in the preseason and once in the regular season.

For those who like to keep count, the Cardinals are 1-2 in their new red uniforms and 0-1 in their white ones.

They wore their home reds on the road in Week 1 because the Washington Commanders have white home unis.
