This Sunshine State prospect is among college juniors who heard from Clemson dating back to Sept. 1.

Starke (Fla.) Bradford High School 2023 running back Manny Covey’s relationship to the Clemson football program goes beyond his experience at the Dabo Swinney Camp this past summer.

The Tigers are actually looking at Covey (5-11, 175) as a slot receiver. He worked out for and was coached by wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham at Clemson’s camp.

Covey and his father, Rich, caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding their long-standing connection to Clemson and their relationship with Tigers’ running backs coach C.J. Spiller.

“I talked to the wide receivers coach when I went to the camp and he just told me basically that he wanted me to play that position, instead of being a running back,” Manny told TCI.

Clemson reached out and expressed their interest in him almost immediately.

He’s very familiar with the program, not only through Spiller, who is practically family, but he and his family lived in Anderson County from 2009-16 before moving back down to Florida.

Manny’s adopted. He’s been with his family since he was about four years old, according to his father. Rich’s oldest adopted son is first cousins with Spiller. Manny is not actually biologically related to Spiller.

“But he’s called Manny his ‘little cuz’ ever since we can remember,” Rich recalled. “As a matter of fact, I can tell you when we first moved up there, I think it was C.J.’s rookie year (with Buffalo), he came and picked up my oldest son. Willie was actually being recruited to Auburn, him Kevin Alexander and C.J. in that ‘06 class. He was a rookie at Buffalo and he pulled up to our house in his range rover and he got out of the car. He was like ‘what’s up little cuz’ and Manny responded back, ‘you’re not my cousin.’”

Rich can recite that memory like it was yesterday.

“We just have a long, long family connection,” he added. “As I said, we lived in that area, both of my boys played travel baseball, Dabo’s kids played travel baseball and they had kids around the same age. We’d see them at different baseball tournaments over the years.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Clemson. My oldest son camped at Clemson as well. We’re definitely familiar with the area. Just the fact that he’s even being talked about with a premiere program like Clemson is big for him, whether Clemson offers or not. There’s no arguing that Clemson’s one of the top-3 programs in the country”

If there’s anyone who can say good things about Clemson’s camps, it’s Rich, who’s attended plenty of them as a parent with his sons over the years.

“Even dating all the way back to Dabo’s first year as the head coach there, that was actually when my oldest son went,” Rich said. “The best working camp in the country. This summer, we did Clemson, North Carolina, Duke, Florida State, South Carolina and hands down Clemson’s camp was the best. As far as work, I like that Dabo said ‘Hey look, I’m not running a combine, I’m trying to find football players, so we’re gonna do football stuff.’ And that’s exactly what they did. They worked and taught the entire camp. There’s no doubt that Clemson is the premiere camp — at least the ones I’ve attended as a parent with both of my kids.”

It’s still pretty early on as far as Manny’s recruitment goes and his versatility will play a huge factor, nonetheless.

He’s a running back, slot receiver, kick returner and punt returner. Manny can essentially do it all. Last season, he had almost 1,400 all-purpose yards and a total of 14 touchdowns.

Manny is a versatile threat, who can move all over the field. As far as his recruitment is concerned, it’s all about a team just taking a chance, Rich added.

Though it’s still pretty early on as far as Manny’s recruitment goes and his versatility will play a huge factor, nonetheless.

In-state running back: ‘Means a lot’ to hear from Spiller, Clemson

It’s only fitting that this local product will be on hand for Clemson’s home opener against South Carolina State on Saturday.

Irmo Fork (S.C.) Dutch Fork 2023 running back Jarvis Green confirmed to The Clemson Insider that he will be among those in attendance.

After working out at the Dabo Swinney Camp this summer and having the opportunity to receive some hands-on coaching instruction from Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller, he’ll get the opportunity to make his way back to The Valley.

“I’m very, very excited to meet the coaches, meet the staff and meet my old teammate who plays for them now — Will Taylor,” Green told TCI. “I just think I’m gonna have a fun time up there.”

You’d be hard-pressed to not ask Green about his former teammate. Taylor, a dual-sport athlete, was Clemson’s primary punt returner against Georgia and even saw some offensive snaps, including one as a Wildcat quarterback.

“I think I was more excited (than he was) when he got in,” he said. “I was very excited when he got in. I just had a smile on my face, I was happy when he got in the game.

When Green first heard from Clemson it was around midnight on Sept. 1. He was surprised. Then, he quickly rushed over to his parent’s room and woke them up to inform them about the good news.

Green has begun to hear a lot more from Spiller and Clemson since last Wednesday. College football coaches and recruiting staffs around the country can now directly contact juniors in the 2023 class, whether it’s sending them messages, mail or graphics.

With that being said, what has Green been hearing from Clemson?

“Just that it’s a family mindset,” Green said. They’re ‘All In.’ They want me up there, so that’s why I’m going up there this week and that they’re waiting to see me.”

According to Green, Spiller has been watching his film, telling the young running back that he’s been having “great games.” He’s also been passing along some advice for life, football and everything in between.

“It means a lot because C.J. Spiller, he’s been through the NFL, he’s been through college, he set records,” Green said. “It just means a lot that a great is trying to push me or trying to recruit me.”

Through two games, Green has around 235 rushing yards and a team-leading six touchdowns.

“I’m a patient running back, I look for the holes to come,” he said when asked to describe his playing style.

Green compared his game to Le’Veon Bell’s patient running style, which is what he tries to emulate and make it his own on the field.

The People drew Spiller back to Clemson

From his days when he was a young recruit coming out of Lake Butler, Florida, to his time now as the running backs coach, Clemson always pulled at C.J. Spiller’s heart.

“This place is just special,” Spiller said on Tuesday.

Spiller first fell in love with Clemson on a recruiting trip in January of 2006. A month later, Spiller stunned the college football world when he announced he was going to play his college ball in Tigertown. His visit to Clemson came after he promised a young wide receivers’ coach named Dabo Swinney, that he would at least give Clemson a look.

Swinney, of course, was recruiting former Clemson linebacker Kevin Alexander at the time when Spiller approached him. A friendship was formed and the two have been close ever since.

There were times when people thought Spiller was going to leave Clemson. There was a threat of a transfer following his freshman season after he and teammate James Davis hardly got any carries in the 2006 Music City Bowl.

But Spiller came back.

The Clemson faithful thought they would lose Spiller again after the 2008 season, this time to the NFL Draft. But remembering what his late grandmother said and wanting to set an example for his little sister and anyone else watching in his hometown, Spiller again stunned everyone when he announced he was returning to Clemson for his senior year.

Spiller graduated from Clemson in December of 2009, while becoming one of the greatest overall players in the program’s history. He ended his college career as the 2009 ACC Player of the Year, while also setting the conference’s all-time mark for all-purpose yards, a mark he still owns today with 7,588 yards.

He was picked No. 9 overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2010 NFL Draft. Spiller played eight seasons in the NFL, while earning Pro Bowl status in 2013.

When his NFL career was over, Spiller once again came back to Clemson.

“I always knew I wanted to do something with Clemson, I just did not know what it was,” he said. “Obviously, this place is just special. I think it is the people. I don’t think, I know it is the people who drew me back.

“When I was deciding if I was going to live here or live down in Tampa, Florida because that was the other destination I was thinking about moving to once I got done. But the [Clemson] people just always came back in my mind. Just how special they were. Not only during my time of playing, but every time I came back while I was playing in the National Football League. It was always a warm reception if that makes sense. That meant more to me than anything else.”

Because of the Clemson people, Spiller always wanted to pay them back. He said they always kept him connected to the university which is why he always wanted to be an ambassador or a spokesperson for his alma mater.

“That is what I was willing to do, because I just knew that this place was special,” Spiller said. “I just knew, and not only athletes, but if kids in general just came here to visit our campus, they would see how special it was and I wanted to be an advocate for that.”

Last year, Swinney made Spiller a part of his staff as an offensive analyst and this past January, he moved him to running backs coach. On Saturday, at halftime of the S.C. State game, he will slip away from his coaching duties for a few minutes to be honored as Clemson’s newest inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Spiller will be enshrined in December.

But despite all the accolades he has received as a player, the 2009 Unanimous All-American says it all comes back to one thing … Clemson. And he loves to tell anyone who will listen just how special Clemson is.

“With me having the opportunity to be the running backs coach here, I am able to go share that message with young athletes across the country,” Spiller said.

Swinney joins the ESPN College GameDay set: ‘This is big boy football’

This is big boy football.

Dabo Swinney joined the set of ESPN’s College GameDay ahead of Clemson’s marquee matchup against Georgia at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte (NC.) at 7:30 p.m.

Swinney talked about D.J. Uiagalelei and Justyn Ross, but first, he touched on the great crowd that surrounded the set in Charlotte’s Romare Bearden Park.

“This is what we missed was the roar of the crowd,” Swinney said. “It’s what we missed. We’re thankful we got to play last year, but man, there’s nothing like the roar of the crowd of college football…This is what it’s all about.”

Kirk Herbstreit asked Swinney about the Tigers’ rich history under center and what he wants to see out of Uiagalelei. Clemson was able to replace Tajh Boyd with Deshaun Watson, and then shortly after came Trevor Lawrence and so on and so forth. Now, it’s Uiagalelei time.

“I just want to see what I’ve seen on the practice field and see him play with great confidence,” Swinney said of Clemson’s starting quarterback. “He’s unbelievable. He’s put the work in, as well as the preparation. And just executing within the system, don’t try to do too much. It’s one of those games where you may try to do too much from time to time, especially as a young player. Trust the players around him and then respond.

“It’s been a long time since we played football and this is big boy football. This is heavyweight. There’s gonna be some adversity. So, respond in a positive way and respond to success too. I think both of those things are very important for a young guy getting going.”

Talking about responding to adversity, Desmond Howard made sure to bring up Ross’s name.

He’ll be back in the fold for the Clemson Tigers after missing all of the 2020 season due to a congenital spinal issue that required surgery in June of 2020. Ross was cleared to play full contact football by his doctors this past June and was given the green light by Clemson University just prior to the start of fall camp.

“That’s asking if I can reincarnate C.J. Spiller today and put him back in the backfield,” Swinney said in response to Howard’s question regarding Ross. “He’s just a special football player. He just makes everything better. He’s just a matchup problem. He’s incredibly competitive. He’s special as a player. So, that’s what he brings to the game, but then it’s who he is as a person. It’s what he brings to the locker room. It’s that edge he brings from a personality standpoint. And then it’s what he’s been through. It’s toughness. It’s the living, breathing example of perseverance. What it looks like. You want to know what it looks like? Look at that guy.”

Swinney reiterated that Ross brings so much more to the table than being a very good football player. His joyfulness and competitive edge are infectious. He’s certainly a leader in that locker room and someone younger players look upon.

Speaking of the reincarnation of Spiller, Rece Davis mentioned Will Shipley as a possible candidate. Swinney couldn’t help but crack a smile.

Clemson is keeping tabs on a standout Sunshine State offensive lineman with close to double digit scholarship offers.

Orange Park (Fla.) High School class of 2023 prospect Roderick Kearney has been hearing from Clemson and his area recruiter for the Tigers, C.J. Spiller, heading into his junior campaign.

“They send me mail, and I talked to the running backs coach,” Kearney said of Clemson and Spiller. “He just said he was going to keep an eye on me and see how this season goes, then they’re going to get back at me.”

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive tackle appreciates the interest from Clemson and is using it as motivation going into his season.

“It means a lot to me,” Kearney said. “It makes me want to work harder.”

Right now, Kearney is paying less attention to the recruiting process and more attention to honing his craft as a lineman. He knows if he does that and develops his game, then his recruitment will take care of itself.

“I’ve been just focusing on getting better at football and just letting the recruitment come,” he said.

Kearney was only able to visit a couple of schools this summer – both in state, Florida State and UCF – but named FSU, UCF and South Carolina as schools he hopes to check out on gamedays this season, along with Clemson.

“Just experience the area,” he said of what he hopes to get out of a future Clemson visit. “They’ve got a lot of good fans over there, and I heard it’s a really good campus, too.”

“I like how they’re a family over there,” he added when asked about his overall impressions of the Tigers. “They bond together, they win games together. Very good program.”

Kearney — who also plays defensive end for his high school team and describes himself as a “fast, aggressive playmaker” at the line of scrimmage — has collected offers from FSU, Florida, Miami, UCF, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Ole Miss, West Virginia and Oregon.

Clemson has the potential to shake things up in Kearney’s recruitment if it comes calling with an offer of its own in the future.

“It would impact my recruitment majorly,” he said. “It would just make more schools come. But down the road, if they do end up giving me an offer, I would be blessed.”

Spiller to be honored Sept. 11 vs. SC State

Clemson and the National Football Foundation (NFF) announced today that former Clemson running back C.J. Spiller will be honored for his College Football Hall of Fame selection in an in-stadium presentation at halftime of Clemson’s home opener against South Carolina State on Sept. 11. During the ceremony, the National Football Foundation will present Spiller with a plaque celebrating his selection in advance of his formal induction at the 63rd NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas on Dec. 7.

In January, Spiller was selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021, earning the distinction in only his second year of eligibility. He will become Clemson’s eighth overall inductee and its fourth former player to earn the honor.

Tickets remain available for fans wanting to witness and participate in the salute to Spiller’s historic career. Fans can purchase discounted tickets using the promo code SPILLER28 — as well as learn more about single-game tickets and three-game flex packs — at ClemsonTigers.com/footballtickets or by directly visiting bit.ly/SPILLER28. The game, which will be carried on ACC Network, is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kickoff.

Spiller was one of 11 players and two coaches selected from the national ballot to the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class. Spiller’s historic Clemson career spanned 2006-09, culminating with a senior season in which he finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting after winning ACC Player of the Year and being selected as a unanimous first-team All-American. That season, Spiller scored 21 touchdowns and became the first player in ACC history to gain 1,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving in the same season.

Of the 5.47 million individuals who have played college football since Princeton first battled Rutgers on Nov. 6, 1869, only 1,038 players and 223 coaches have been immortalized in the Hall, including those slated for induction in the Class of 2021. Spiller’s selection to the Hall of Fame puts Spiller in the top 0.02 percent of those who have played or coached college football.

Four-star running back continues to build ‘strong relationship’ with Spiller

Clemson continues to make quite the impression on this Class of 2023 running back.

Since visiting Tiger Town on June 1, Blessed Trinity Catholic (Roswell, GA) four-star Justice Haynes has worked hard on his relationship with C.J. Spiller.

Haynes is the No. 4 running back, No. 8 prospect in the state of Georgia and No. 71 overall prospect in the 2023 class regardless of position according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“We just continue to build a strong relationship and continue to get closer,” Haynes told TCI. “Me and C.J., continue to just have normal conversations and talk on a weekly basis and that I’m still their No. 1 guy that they want in this class.

Relationship-wise, Clemson’s running backs coach is carving out a good one with one of the nation’s best running backs.

“It means a lot to me, definitely,” Haynes said of his budding relationship with Spiller. “I’m a big relationship guy. If I want to play for a coach, I want to know him, not just as a coach, but his person and what he’s about. The true ins and outs about him.”

Haynes feels like he’s really connected with Spiller since the start of the summer. He’s learned about Spiller and vice versa. They don’t talk just about football, they talk about life and everything in between.

“It’s been good,” Haynes said regarding his experience on the recruiting trail this summer. “ I’m just taking it step by step, putting it in God’s hands.”

As far as this upcoming season is concerned, Haynes is looking to help Blessed Trinity Catholic make a State Championship run. Personally, he’s looking to be the best he can be each and every play while giving 110% every time out.

With that being said, what are the talented all-purpose back’s strengths?

“Me being an all-around running back, whether I go up there and pass catch, go pass block, I can run the ball and do whatever the team needs me to do,” he said.

Spiller sees Haynes in the same light, as a guy that he can spread out and be used in a similar manner that Travis Etienne was.

That’s exactly the type of role that Haynes has envisioned for himself at the next level.

Haynes has communicated with Spiller about coming up to a game in Tiger Town this season. Right now, he’s unsure of what game he’s going to, however, Spiller is currently checking for Haynes on the Georgia game, so there’s a chance he could be in Charlotte come Sept. 4.

Regardless, Haynes will definitely be up in Clemson for a game this fall, he said.

“They do things differently. I’m looking forward to seeing how they do their games because they do everything differently,” Haynes added.

Is Spiller more open to a pecking order heading to fall camp?

In the last seven seasons Clemson has had two different leading rushers, Travis Etienne and Wayne Gallman.

As the Tigers prepare to enter fall camp in a couple of weeks, they find themselves in unfamiliar territory without a leading candidate who has emerged as the starting running back.

Running backs coach C.J. Spiller beat around the bush when asked about a pecking order at the Clemson Football Media Day on Tuesday.

But Spiller doesn’t feel like his unit necessarily needs an alpha dog in order to be successful when the season kicks off.

“As far as having that one lead dog I don’t think we need that because it will take a collective effort from everybody,” Spiller said. “In years past you always had Travis but as a running back it is going to take multiple guys for us to be successful.”

Clemson does not lack talent in the running back room with Kobe Pace, Lyn-J Dixon, Phil Mafah and Will Shipley all vying for carries. In Spiller’s assessment all four tailbacks and Darien Rencher are needed for the group to maintain the high standard for the Tigers.

“You have to make sure everybody in your room is prepared because if somebody goes down that doesn’t mean the standard goes down, the standard won’t go down and it will be set at a high level,” Spiller said. “Guys that came through here like Terry Allen, James Davis, Wayne Gallman, Andre Ellington, Reggie Merriweather set that standard.”

Pace showed out in the Orange and White game this spring as he led both squads in rushing with six carries for 64 yards and a touchdown and impressed the coaching staff throughout spring practice. Dixon asserted himself as the No. 2 while Etienne toted the rock and brings experience to the unit as a senior.

The freshmen Mafah and Shipley will also compete for carries immediately during fall camp. Shipley enters with high expectations as a five-star talent that was rated as the No. 1 all-purpose back by some services with his speed and knack for winning games. Mafah brings a unique mix of speed and power that he showed in the spring.

“As far as ball carrying yes because you never know what is going to happen in the game,” Spiller said. “There is a high standard in our room so it doesn’t matter who runs out there those guys on the sideline watching you will expect you to get the job done.”

Looking Ahead: Running Back

After signing two running backs as part of the 2021 class in five-star Will Shipley and four-star Phil Mafah, landing a running back is not a critical need for the Tigers in the 2022 class, though they remain in the hunt.

Clemson continues to track some running backs, and one of those on the radar is Jennings (La.) four-star Trevor Etienne, of course the younger brother of former Clemson running back Travis Etienne.

Etienne participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp and attended the Tigers’ Elite Retreat in June. If he returns to campus for the All In Cookout this month as expected, it figures to further help Clemson’s chances with the nation’s No. 13 running back, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Beyond Etienne, the Tigers have only offered two other running backs in the 2022 class — five-star Emmanuel Henderson and four-star Branson Robinson. Henderson has already verbally committed to Alabama, while Robinson no-showed Clemson’s Elite Retreat and is down to Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee ahead of his scheduled decision date July 22.

Looking ahead to the 2023 class, Clemson has offered just two running backs in the next cycle, including the nation’s No. 1 running back in Lehigh Senior (Lehigh Acres, Fla) five-star Richard Young and the nation’s No. 3 back, Blessed Trinity Catholic (Roswell, GA) four-star Justice Haynes.

Young (pictured above) was recently offered directly by Dabo Swinney on an unofficial visit to Clemson’s campus.

Young (6-0, 190) is the No. 1 running back and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247sports Composite rankings.

As a sophomore last season, Young rushed for 982 yards and eight touchdowns on 100 carries, averaging 9.8 yards per attempt.

The Tigers have spent a little bit more time on Haynes, who took his unofficial visit back on June 1. He officially received an offer from the Tigers nearly 23 days later. His patience and high character paid off, leading to a fateful phone call with Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller.

On the behalf of Clemson’s offensive coaching staff, Spiller rewarded Haynes with the offer he had been waiting for.

“It means a lot,” Haynes said of receiving an offer from the Tigers. “Clemson is a prestigious school, they do things differently around there. Like I said, yes, it’s one of my dream schools, for them to offer me, it means a lot.”

Haynes (5-10, 195) is the No. 3 running back and No. 72 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247sports Composite rankings.

For now, Clemson has maintained its focus on Young and Haynes.

Much less so, Rueben Owens, who is the nation’s No. 2 running back in the 2023 class. Even before he de-committed from the University of Texas, Owens was supposed to visit Clemson earlier this summer. That never took place and he hasn’t heard much of anything from Clemson or Spiller for that matter.

It appears, at least for the time being, that the Tigers are keeping their options limited, as far as the running backs in the Class of 2023 are concerned.

Some other running back prospects we are keeping tabs on are Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork’s Jarvis Green and Miami (Fla.) Norland four-star Javin Simpkins, who is a Georgia Tech commit.
