Buckeye Battle Cry Roundtable: Was Kyle McCord the right pick at the right time to start at QB?

Was Kyle McCord the right choice at the right time to take over the starting job officially for Ohio State? Our writers debate. #GoBucks

After a long and highly scrutinized offseason of competition, the Ohio State football program finally has its starting quarterback. After two games of playing both (sort of), it was clear that Kyle McCord was the more poised and talented option under center. We could all see it and so could head coach Ryan Day who named him the official starter going forward on Tuesday,

We get paid to give our opinions on these sorts of things, so of course we are going to weigh in on the news as Ohio State prepares to take on Western Kentucky on Saturday. No other position on the football field gets put under the microscope more than the quarterback position, so it probably won’t be the last time we debate this topic either.

For this week’s Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable, we decided to stay on the topic of quarterback on the banks of the Olentangy and were giving each of our writers a chance to put keyboard to screen. The question this week: Was Kyle McCord the right decision to start and was the timing what it should be?

As always, someone has to start this thing off so we’ll throw it over to Michael Chen to get this debate going.

Buckeye Battle Cry: Indiana performance cause for concern?

Our writers debate on whether there’s cause for concern after the performance we saw for Ohio State against Indiana. #GoBucks

Isn’t it great to be looking forward to Ohio State football each weekend again? The Buckeyes kicked the season off last Saturday against conference foe Indiana, and all of Buckeye Nation seems to be wringing their hands over the subpar performance of the offense.

Quarterback Kyle McCord showed a live arm but didn’t exactly light things up to make everyone feel like the offense is the juggernaut through the air we’ve seen over the last few years. The offensive line was fine in pass protection, but seemed to lack a push to get the ground game going.

So, here’s the question this week our writers will banter based on what we saw last weekend: Are you concerned about the performance against Indiana? Is all the consternation an overreaction of just one game, or should we be hitting the panic button on this team?

We’ll throw it out to Josh Keatley first and let the rest of our staff weigh in.

Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable: Biggest Ohio State breakout player for 2023

Each of our writers picks the biggest breakout player of the year for Ohio State. Who would you pick? #GoBucks

Get excited Ohio State football fans. It’s officially a game week and that means there will be more to discuss aside from predicting what things might look like for the 2023 season. We’ll soon have real, live, games to react to and analyze, and that’s what we’re all here for.

But before that, we’ll still be looking ahead until Ohio State and Indiana kick things off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. In fact, we thought we’d dust off our Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable discussion to kick things off for the week.

There are some known commodities on this Buckeye squad, but there’s always a player or two — or more — that really shine and make a name for themselves and become household names to Buckeye Nation.

So, that’s what we’re throwing out for discussion this week. The question our five writers will opine upon is: Who will be the biggest breakout player of this 2023 season?

We’ll let one of our seasoned veterans, Mark Russell, kick things off for us.

Buckeye Battle Cry Roundtable: Ohio State vs. Michigan and the Buckeyes’ running woes

So, what about that running game for Ohio State? Our writers discuss how concerned they are when talking about matching up with Michigan. #GoBucks

Every now and then we like to get the debate going here on Buckeyes Wire. We have a little roundtable segment we like to call our “Buckeye Battle Cry.” We throw out a hot-button topic and each of the three writers takes turns debating an answer.

There are varying perspectives for a trio that doesn’t agree very often, and sometimes the virtual mud flies. Other times (seldom), there are rainbows, butterflies and agreement among the group.

This time we discuss the much-maligned running game — or lack thereof — of what we’ve seen from Ohio State over the last three weeks. It may not hurt the Buckeyes until it plays a team that has a physical brand to it, but that day is coming, namely when some certain winged helmets invade Ohio Stadium.

So the question this week: Are you at all concerned about what you’ve seen over the last few weeks with Ohio State’s run game, and will it be a problem when OSU and Michigan play on November 26?

Mark will set the baseline for this one …

Buckeye Battle Cry Roundtable: How much does strength of schedule matter?

Our latest Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable touches on Ohio State’s strength of schedule to date and what it all means.

Other times (and rarely at that), there are rainbows, butterflies, and agreement among the group.

This time we’re going to hit on strength of schedule. It’s a rallying cry for fans that think they’ve had a better one to stack up against other highly ranked teams, but what does it all really mean — or should mean — when it comes to ranking teams in the upcoming College Football Playoff?

So the question this week: How much does strength of schedule matter with what we’ve seen from Ohio State so far when comparing it against other top teams?

Josh gets us started on the right track (we hope) with this one …

Buckeye Battle Cry Roundtable: Should Georgia have jumped Ohio State in the polls?

We debate whether or not Ohio State should have dropped in the polls after the performance against Notre Dame last week.

Other times (and rarely at that), there are rainbows, butterflies, and agreement among the group.

This time we want to stick with the perception of Ohio State after it beat a top-five opponent, Notre Dame by winning with defense rather than a laser and lights show on offense. Because OSU didn’t look as explosive as many expected on offense, the national media raised questions and even the two major polls had the Buckeyes fall behind Georgia. So, that leads us to our hot-button topic for this Buckeye Battle Cry.

The question: Should the Georgia Bulldogs have jumped Ohio State in the polls and in national perception after what we saw last week?

Off we go … let the debate begin.
