Report: Bronny James to take recruiting visit to Ohio State for showdown vs. Notre Dame

The first domino looks to be falling in Bronny James’ high-profile recruitment.

While the Oregon Ducks currently have the only prediction to land a commitment from 4-star mega-recruit Bronny James — the son of NBA legend LeBron James — his recruitment is far from over.

After the prediction came out a couple of weeks ago for the Ducks to get a commitment from the eldest James son, LeBron took to social media to clarify that nothing has been decided yet, and Bronny would still be going through the recruitment process.

It looks like we have one of the first steps of that process coming this fall, with On3 reporting that James will be taking a recruiting visit to Ohio State in September for the showdown against Notre Dame on September 3. This is the same day that Oregon is taking on Georgia, but that game is in Atlanta, so a visit from Bronny wouldn’t give him the benefit of seeing the Eugene campus.

We will see in the coming weeks how this recruitment shakes out for one of the most high-profile recruits we have seen in a long time, but the Ducks are certainly in the mix and should likely get a visit at some point this fall.

Bronny James’ Recruiting Profile

Bryce James receives first Division I college basketball offer

James has received his first college basketball scholarship offer from a Division I program.

Bryce James, the youngest son of LeBron James, announced late Sunday that he received his first college basketball scholarship offer from a Division I program.

Bryce, 15, confirmed on Instagram that he received an offer letter from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The team is coached by Keith Dambrot, who coached LeBron for two years in high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio.

Bryce, who is listed at 6-foot-6, does not have a high school ranking, but he also attends Sierra Canyon with his older brother, Bronny. The early scouting report on Bryce by some experts is that he could eventually be better than Bronny, a four-star prospect.

The offer letter came after Bryce recently played alongside Bronny with the California Basketball Club on the AXE Euro Tour. The team played three games across Europe, marking the first time the two James brothers shared the court in a competitive setting.

Bryce played on the JV team last year as a freshman and will likely make the jump to the varsity this season. He figures to continue to receive other offers as he grows and develops on the court.

Bryce James’ first D-I collegiate offer has a backstory that dates back to when LeBron was just 10 years old

LeBron knew the coaches in the 1990s.

Bryce James, the 15-year-old son of LeBron James, may have a hilarious impression of his father. But he is now starting to make his own name in the basketball world.

To this point, fans have likely heard more about Bronny James, a rising senior at Sierra Canyon in California who could potentially play alongside LeBron in the NBA. Bronny, who is expected to go the collegiate route after high school, recently picked up an offer from Memphis.

Bryce, however, also plays at Sierra Canyon. He recently joined Bronny on the California Basketball Club for a European tour.

Bryce posted on Instagram late Sunday night about his first collegiate offer to a D-I basketball program. The offer letter was from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Duquesne is a mid-major program in the A10 conference — which is the same conference that has recently produced NBA players including Stephen Curry (Davidson), Obi Toppin (Dayton), and Bones Hyland (VCU). Last season, Duquesne finished with a 6-24 record.

But the reason why this offer is particularly significant is because of the staff at Duquesne.

Their head coach, Keith Dambrot, actually served as the head coach at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Ohio for two of the years LeBron attended. Dru Joyce III, who played alongside LeBron at STVM, is the associate head coach at Duquesne.

Dru’s father, Dru Joyce II, became LeBron’s coach and mentor when the future NBA champion was just ten years old in 1994.

Dru Joyce II was an assistant at STVM before taking over for Dambrot as STVM head coach in 2001. The team won a national title in 2003 before LeBron was drafted by the hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. Joyce is still the head coach at STVM and has won seven state championships.

Last month, LeBron attended a ceremony to name the STVM court the Dru Joyce Court at the LeBron James Arena, per the Akron Beacon Journal. So with the shared family history, it only makes sense that Bryce would get the offer to play for Dambrot and Joyce at Duquense.

At fifteen years old, Bryce is already listed at 6-foot-6 — which makes him several inches taller than his older brother, Bronny. LeBron has called Bryce his twin.

Bryce doesn’t yet have a high school ranking in his class, but according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, some NBA evaluators believe he has a brighter future in basketball than Bronny.

While it’s way too early to say what the professional trajectory may look like for Bryce or Bronny, the offer from Duquesne still holds significant weight.

Current projection on where Bronny James could be drafted

People around the NBA already feel Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, could be as high as a first-round draft pick.

LeBron James’ son, Bronny James, is garnering more interest as a viable prospect, not just in the college ranks, but also at the NBA level.

He is entering his senior year of high school at Sierra Canyon School in the San Fernando Valley, and he will soon mull offers from prominent NCAA programs.

After the younger James plays one year of college basketball, he will be eligible for the NBA draft. Already, people around the league believe he could go as high as late in the first round.

Via Lakers Daily:

“A new report indicates that Bronny James, son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, is currently projected to be taken late in the first round or early in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft.

“On “The Wine and Gold Talk” podcast, co-host Chris Fedor indicated that the younger James could elevate his status with a pair of strong seasons at both the high school and collegiate levels.

“‘By all accounts, everybody that I’ve talked to around the NBA that does this for a living, that scouts this, they talk about Bronny as late first-round pick, early second-round pick type of player,’ said Fedor.

“‘Now that could change. He could have a great season this year in high school, and then he could go somewhere to college and have a great freshman season and then the status quo changes.'”

[pickup_prop id=”17071″]

Already being projected to possibly be a first-round pick before the start of one’s senior year of high school is pretty impressive.

Of course, plenty of NBA players significantly improved their draft position with one stellar year of college ball, or even just an impressive performance in the NCAA Tournament, so the younger James still has plenty of room for improvement.

The elder James has made it clear he wants to play a season alongside his son in the NBA. He recently signed a contract extension to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers through the 2023-24 season, with a player option for the 2024-25 campaign, which would be the earliest the younger James could play in the league.

University of Memphis extends offer to Bronny James

The University of Memphis wants LeBron James’ son to play for them.

Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, is a year away from starting college, and more NCAA basketball programs are expressing interest in him.

Recently, Rutgers University in New Jersey tried to recruit him, and now, the University of Memphis wants him.

Via Lakers Daily:

“Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, reportedly has received an offer to play college basketball at the University of Memphis.

“‘Sierra Canyon four-star combo guard Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, has received an offer from Memphis, a source told On3,’ Joe Tipton wrote.”

The University of Memphis is a decent basketball school. It has produced prominent NBA players over the years such as Tyreke Evans and Derrick Rose.

More recently, James Wiseman of the Golden State Warriors, Will Barton of the Washington Wizards and Precious Achiuwa of the Toronto Raptors are former Memphis stars.

Playing for the Tigers would allow the younger James to be coached by former NBA star Anfernee Hardaway, another former Memphis star player.

The Bronny James collegiate recruitment chaos is officially underway with reported offer from Memphis

LeBron once called Memphis coach Penny Hardaway his second-favorite player ever.

Bronny James, a rising senior at Sierra Canyon in California, has a decision to make.

The four-star recruit will soon decide where he is playing basketball once he completes high school. James, who reportedly received offers from North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central in 2020, is expected to go the collegiate route rather than play for the G League Ignite or Overtime Elite.

The Oregon Ducks are considered the favorites to land a commitment from James. But it’s too early in the process to make any sweeping predictions about his future. His father, LeBron James, clarified that Bronny “hasn’t taken” any collegiate visits yet and he has “only had a few calls” with any universities.

Even without the visits, however, Bronny has reportedly picked up an offer from his first high-major university. According to On3, Bronny received an offer from the Memphis Tigers.

Bronny just finished a tournament playing for the California Classic Club in Europe.

One of his teammates on the European tour, Ashton Hardaway. Ashton, who played at Duncanville High School in Texas last season, will join Bronny and transfer to Sierra Canyon next season. He is the son of Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway.

LeBron, as noted by the Memphis Commercial Appeal, is a fan of the elder Hardaway:

“But if James’ father has any say in where his son plays, his opinion of Hardaway could provide some insight. LeBron has made his high esteem for Hardaway clear on multiple occasions.

‘Penny was one of my favorite players growing up,’ LeBron said in 2019 after a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. ‘I kind of idolized Michael Jordan, but I wanted to be like Penny. ‘

In an Instagram post in 2020, LeBron doubled down on his affinity for Hardaway.

‘MY 2ND FAVORITE PLAYER OF ALL-TIME MAN! LITERALLY COULD WATCH HIM PLAY EVERY NIGHT!!” he posted under a reel featuring some of Hardaway’s most impressive highlights.'”

In addition to Oregon and Memphis, there are several other schools with reported interest in landing a commitment from Bronny. On3 reports that USC has offered Bronny a scholarship as well.

But now that there is apparently an offer letter extended to the four-star recruit, expect several other high-major universities to get involved and do the same. The madness has officially begun.

Why LeBron’s player option allows him to potentially play wherever Bronny is drafted in the NBA

Now the question is whether or not Bronny James is a one-and-done NBA prospect.

LeBron James signed a lucrative contract extension with the Lakers on Wednesday, and for several reasons, it’s a pretty big deal.

With the contract, James became the highest-earning player in NBA history. But there are some other notable details that fans should understand about the deal as well.

First and foremost, James is now no longer eligible to be traded next season. So you can throw away all of your fake trade ideas that involve moving him to another team.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that this contract is a two-year, $97.1 million extension. Due to the Over-38 rule, as noted by HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan, James was limited to only two years in his extension.

James, however, does have a player option for the 2024-25 season. But what does that mean? Essentially, per NBA.com, this means James will have “the power to decide whether to stay for another year or become an unrestricted free agent” once the 2023-24 season is complete.

My colleague, Mike Sykes, explained why that is so significant:

“LeBron is now in perfect position to go wherever his son goes, should he actually play in the NBA.

There’s no guarantee he makes it — the NBA is vast pool of talent and being related to one of the greats doesn’t earn you a roster spot. But Bronny is good. And if he keeps improving he could get there.

If he does, it’d be in the summer of 2024. That’s when he’d be draft eligible. That’s also the same year James can opt out of his deal and enter free agency.

We know James wants to play with his son. He told us in January.”

LeBron’s son Bronny, who is expected to go the collegiate route once he completes high school, is a rising senior at Sierra Canyon in California. So that means Bronny will still be in high school during the NBA’s upcoming 2022-23 campaign.

His freshman year of college, should he take that path, is slated for the 2023-24 season. But it’s unclear if Bronny is a one-and-done prospect who will have enough momentum to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft after just one collegiate season.

Because he has a player option, LeBron will have the choice to stay with the Lakers for another year if Bronny decides to spend multiple years in college. However, if he decides to turn pro after one collegiate campaign, LeBron can opt out of his deal and potentially sign wherever Bronny is drafted.

With all that in mind, the player option for 2024-25 is far and away the most significant portion of LeBron’s new contract with the Lakers.

What LeBron James’ extension means for Bronny, the Lakers and the NBA

Let’s break down what LeBron’s big deal means for the relevant parties.

LeBron James has redefined what success means in the modern NBA – and not just on the court, either. The four-time champion, four-time league MVP and 18-time All Star has also become an all-time maven in the business of basketball.

The latest evidence of James’ dominance off the court is the contract extension he just signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. According to the Athletic, James has signed a two-year deal worth a total of $97.1 million. The contract includes a third-year player option for the 2024-2025 season. Let’s break down what LeBron’s big deal means for the relevant parties.

LeBron James

First of all, it’s worth mentioning just how rare it is for any athlete to make this kind of deal at James’ age. Other players were arguably better at their peak but exactly no one has performed at the level James has past the age of 35. LeBron has now earned $387 million total in his singular career.

The Lakers

Normally, retaining a top-five talent at any point in their career is a win for a franchise. Unfortunately, this particular franchise has higher expectations than any other in the sport and the move also made it more difficult for them to build a championship contender around James.

While they won a title led by LeBron two years ago, there are now new obstacles to the elusive ring No. 18. That list includes a surprisingly-resurgent Warriors dynasty – winners of four of the last seven NBA Finals – plus new threats like Mavericks star Luka Doncic, who is likely to surpass LeBron as the best non-center in the league soon, if he hasn’t already.

The greatest obstacle to their success is, of course, Russell Westbrook, who was supposed to be the missing third piece to complement James and superstar center Anthony Davis. However, Westbrook’s contract (he makes $47.1 million this year) and his woeful performance last season might just make him the lowest-value player in the NBA.

Until LA finds a willing trade partner or Westbrook becomes a fundamentally different kind of player, it’s difficult to envision them getting the supporting role pieces they need to come out of a stacked Western Conference.

Bronny James

The timing of James’ contract – especially the third-year player option – might reveal his future plans. James has made it known that he plans to play the last season of his NBA career on the same team as his son Bronny, who’s entering his Senior year of high school. Bronny won’t be eligible for the draft for another two years, so LeBron will have to wait a while. That option for 2024-2025 might give James the flexibility he needs to join whichever team winds up getting Bronny…

The NBA

This sets up what may be the most interesting offseason and draft in the recent history of the league. Once Bronny is eligible, teams may be falling all over themselves to draft him – especially if it means they’ll be first in line to sign his dad – even if he’ll be 40 by the time that season ends.

7 reasons why LeBron James choosing to sign an extension with the Lakers makes a ton of sense

LeBron James is going to be a Laker for a while.

It feels like it was just yesterday that we were talking about how LeBron James signing his latest extension with the Lakers in 2020 brought him a bit closer to playing with Bronny James in the near future.

Fast forward a few years and it almost was just yesterday that we were talking about James possibly forcing his way out of LA if they weren’t competitive.

We can put those rumors to bed, though. LeBron James will be a Los Angeles Laker for the foreseeable future — at least, until his son makes it to the NBA.

James signed a two-year, $97.1 million extension with the Lakers on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal comes with a 15% trade kicker and can potentially rise up to $111 million if the salary cap spikes in the 2024-25 season.

Nobody really expected James to sign this extension at this point. Lakers fans (and the team, obviously) are elated that he’s staying. And it makes a ton of sense why he would when you really boil it down.

Let’s dive into it.
